the comparison between the soviet propiska and chinese hukou systems is interesting because they’re seemingly comparable in form but ultimately had something like the opposite impact

in the USSR, housing registration was tied to where you were actually allowed to live - it was incredibly difficult to move somewhere without first acquiring the proper propiska. as a result, it was used for just what you might imagine: to prevent rural-dwellers from moving to large cities. this (1) slowed the pace of urbanisation in existing urban centers like leningrad and moscow, but (2) increased the pace of urbanisation in newly built, often geographically remote, monogorods, and (3) was compensated for by a campaign of rural industrialisation where light industry was brought to towns and villages instead of being concentrated in big cities. the overall impact was a relatively even distribution of industrial capacity across the territory of the USSR

in china, however, the opposite happened. there, hukou status is tied primarily to what level of state benefits you receive and only secondarily to actual place of residence. as a result, it was actually used to welcome a massive influx of rural-dwellers into existing urban centers - workers who would receive a far lower level of state benefits than people with urban hukou, and who could be freely exploited since they’re constantly under the threat of internal deportation by police. in combination with the chinese policy of keeping rural areas 100% devoted to agricultural production, this has propelled (1) some of the most rapid urbanisation in human history as well as the creation of the largest cities in human history, and (2) an astronomically unequal distribution of industrial capacity across the territory of china

I dont remember where i learned this from, but i always put the period at the start of the next line. So the line would start at

”. Furtermore…”

okay for latex typesetting my advisor prefers putting a period at the end of an equation in big math mode if it forms the end of a sentence. i prefer just leaving out punctuation and hoping people figure it out from context. i understand that his method makes more "sense" on some formal level but it feels wrong to me to put a period in big math mode! thats not what big math mode is for! i made some examples

feel free to be loosy goosy about whether you count as a mathematician. if you use latex a lot that counts

Here is a google doc that has the entire script so it's easier to copy & paste the text into translators while playing if English is not your first language, or if anyone wants it for another reason. There is also a notepad version of this in the folder.

I made a LOT of custom sprites for this. Like, a lot. Many that I didn't even use. They are all in the files. Anyone is free to use them for anything they may like to. You don't need to credit me, but I would still appreciate it ❤️

This was a two months long project that started as what was supposed to be a really quick joke to try and learn renpy and very quickly spiraled out of control.... I put a lot of time and effort into this, and the coding was absolute hell at times 😭 (mostly for the menus). I tried to replicate Umineko's feel, but could only get just so far before I had to finally give up and settle for what I got. I still like how it turned out, though, and am overall pretty pleased with the entire thing.

if you're running a rawlsian original position type argument then surely what you want is not summed population utility but rather mean. bc like yknow randomly sampling from {1 guy with 1 utility} is preferable to from {1 guy with 1 and 9 guys with .9}. so instead of a universe tiled with rats on heroin it's strictly better to have one big rat with big hypertrophic brain spanning half the lightcone, the other half reserved for the big vat of synthetic opioids that youre gonna mainline into said big rat brain. and if it's all the same to you i'd like to be the big rat. please.
