A Room With A View by E.M. Forster (Audiobook) - 3⭐/5
Well this was fun! I'm always down for a comedy of manners and while this is not entirely that, it's drawing from a similar well. And while the love story is fairly simple, the shades of satire are woven through it with great skill. I especially enjoyed the tension between Lucy and her dottering old cousin Charlotte who, as it turns out, may just have had her best interests at heart the whole time. It is interesting to see that this male author rewards his female lead for demanding her independence, despite a few digs at the rich not understanding what independence they already have, and that she is allowed to express to her male suitor that he is treating her like property and that is a good enough reason to end their engagement. Pretty progressive stuff!
But in the end I only found it compelling enough to finish and I don't suspect it will be one that stays with me. I might check out one of the film adaptations but it's not high on my list.
And now we're done with the two books I was reading as we started the new year!

Finished the first book of the year!
Haunted Ever After by Jen DeLuca - 3.25⭐/5
An easy breezy read, and a fun twist on the classic newcomer in a small town romance. Very loveable characters, especially the ghosts, and some solidly spicy scenes at the end. Spoilers below the cut.
My only complaint was that the exorcism scene felt anticlimactic. I had hoped that we'd see something more like Practical Magic with all the women working together to remove this over the top misogynist, but instead it was simply the main character listing women's rights at the possessed boyfriend while the allegedly brilliantly powerful ghost whisperer woman shot him in the face a few times with holy water from a squirt gun. I appreciated the twist of Sarah having borne the weight of her husband's cruelty in secret and finally being free of him, and I was glad she was at least with Cassie while they did the exorcism, but finally banishing this apparently powerful malevolent force by proclaiming that women can vote was just a little too over the top for me. Not enough to make me dislike the book but I did knock off a quarter star for it.
And Jen DeLuca is definitely an author I'll always look out for, she knows how to take you on a fun and heartwarming jaunt with characters that feel real enough to believe in. Even the ghosts.

Frodo's face was peaceful, the marks of fear and care had left it; but it looked old, old and beautiful, as if the chiselling of the shaping years was now revealed in many fine lines that had before been hidden, though the identity of the face was not changed. Not that Sam Gamgee put it that way to himself. He shook his head, as if finding words useless, and murmured: "I love him. He's like that, and sometimes it shines through, somehow. But I love him, whether or no."

The thing about Alex Michaelides is that he's not good enough to be Donna Tartt but not brave enough to be Campy Donna Tartt and so his books just leave you feeling confused.

cant stop thinking abt ursula k. le guin’s essay abt the carrier bag theory….. she’s like, maybe the first human tool was not a weapon, but rather something that holds, a bag, a pouch, a vessel, something for gathering and storing and sharing. let’s shift the narrative of humanity from that of violence to that of safekeeping. and i’m like
