To end the unseemly war between demonkind and divinity, you, the Prince of the Divine Realm, are ordered to act as an emissary to the Underworld. You are willing to do anything in your power to achieve peace, but you are not ready for what the Demon Lord has in store for you.

5 Must Watch Old School Anime
Tumblr media
When we look at anime today, there is such a vast array of beautifully animated, well-written shows to choose from.
This is quite the recent phenomenon.
Back in the day, anime had a wide margin of hit or miss. If a show was good, it was good enough to be considered a storytelling masterpiece. If a show was bad, they were so incredibly terrible that it hurt to watch.
Today, we are going to talk about ten shows from the year 2000 and earlier that are a must watch for all those that consider themselves anime fans!
Let’s begin, shall we?
Tumblr media
5. Hajime no Ippo
If you are a fan of the sports genre in anime, this is a must watch!
Hajime no Ippo, created by manga artist Jyoji Morikawa and produced by Madhouse, was released on October 3, 2000. It was such a hit that it has received a total of 3 seasons and 127 episodes. While there has been no word of a season 4, many fans are optimistic that it will come in the next year, especially since only 560 chapters out of 1200 chapters have been adapted in the anime.
Hajime no Ippo tells the story of a young bullied boy entering the world of boxing as he tries to understand what it means to be strong. As he begins his journey, he runs into friends, rivals and enemies that lead him one step closer to understanding the philosophy of strength.
Every concept so prevalent in sports anime is what you will find with this boxing anime series. Determination, rivalries, the will to never give in, training arcs, epic clutch moments to achieve victory.
It would be no exaggeration to claim that all of those ideas that are now such staples to the sports anime genre were first coming into form in a show like Hajime no Ippo, though it was of course not the only sports anime that could be credited with the accomplishment of popularizing sports anime.

4. Yu Yu Hakusho
Released in 1992, written by Yoshihiro Togashi, the writer of the widely popular Hunter x Hunter, Yu Yu Hakusho is widely considered a staple of the shonen genre.
Released around the time the Dragonball anime was at its peak in popularity, Yu Yu Hakusho had an incredible challenge in living up to the hype that Dragonball and Dragon Ball Z had created within anime fans as one of the only other anime outside of Sailor Moon who classed itself as a fighting show with superpowers, and it was able to live up to the challenge and if anything, surpass all expectations.
Yu Yu Hakusho follows the story of delinquent Yusuke Urameshi who is employed as a Spirit Detective by the upper brass in the afterlife and under their watch, he must now fight and defeat demons.
It is a show, alongside Dragonball, that has created the shonen genre. The powerups, training arcs, the special attacks, the bonds of friendship and the determination of will to achieve their goals. Everything that we now determine as typically ‘shonen’ was at the time a breaking of the mold.

3. Digimon Adventure
If you are a fan of Pokemon, it would be considered a crime if you have not sat down and watched Digimon Adventure!
Released in 1999, Digimon Adventure tells the story about a group of children who are brought into a different realm, a digital realm, and are given creatures similar to Pokemon known as Digimon, or Digital Monsters, and they must evolve them and fight enemies that come in their way.
Unlike Pokemon which has a story in a circular fashion where the story keeps resetting and having very little consequences for the grander story, Digimon Adventure is told in a more typically linear fashion where each action and plot point has a rippling effect for the rest of the story.
If anyone were to ask me, Digimon Adventure is vastly superior to Pokemon purely from a storytelling perspective.

2. Dragonball
As Dragon Ball Z is one of the most well-known shows in the anime community, there is no point in putting it in the list, but Dragonball is a show that I feel is often not appreciated as much as it should be in the anime community.
Following the early adventures of everyone’s favourite intergalactic warrior Son Goku, Dragonball focuses more on the martial arts side of things as opposed to the pretty lights and Earth-breaking attacks of Dragon Ball Z. Additionally, Dragonball is superior to its successor in ensuring the development of all the characters, not just a select few in the way that Dragon Ball Z often neglects the development of its supporting cast.
Dragon Ball Z is undoubtedly an anime classic, but Dragonball is in a level above when it comes to the writing, the worldbuilding, the character growth and the thought put into the fights.
If you like adventure and fighting anime more on the realistic side with a hint (not too much!) of supernatural elements, Dragonball is a must watch!
Tumblr media
1. Sailor Moon
Every series that has been listed so far are usually aimed at young boys as series’ that were published in Shonen Jump, but Sailor Moon is revolutionary in using many of the same elements that make Shonen so popular in the content of a Shojo series, that is to say a series aimed towards young girls.
At its foundation, Sailor Moon is a typical Magical Girl series which is something that can be very commonly found in anime and manga. It follows the story of a young girl and her friends as
