A roleplayers guide to saying 'no'.
So, there’s a thing about the community of roleplay (as far as I’m concerned, I know of only tumblr RP, but I think this can crossover to any forms of playing games with others); and it’s the issue of players unable to say ‘no’.
The thing is, you don’t need a reason. If you feel like the other person will not add to want you want to do, say no. If you even like their character concept, but don’t feel like starting new threads, say no. If you already follow the same character and you don’t want to talk to more than one, say no. You don’t care for a plot idea, say no. Even your mutual followers you’ve played with before, and you simply aren’t feeling it at the moment, just say no.
The initial fear is that you don’t want to hurt their feelings, but what people don’t realize is that they’re sacrificing what they want for others. There is no need to make a hobby pressuring and stressful. You do not need to sacrifice your time and happiness for anyone else. Ever, in anything in life, to be honest. Don’t put up with things if they are detrimental.
In truth, the other player is going to move just as quickly as you’ve denied interaction. And it’s nothing to lose sleep on. Most players are students and hold jobs; you have bigger things to think about than worrying about a saying ‘no’ to a stranger you’ve never, and maybe will never, meet.
And if you ever get abuse to follow and to RP with someone, you need to give them the most FOR SURE no you’ve ever given. To guilt and pressure someone into doing anything they don’t want to do for a hobby is wrong. In fact, in my experience, you run from those types. Hell, it might seem tough, but are they really going to make your life better now they’re got you wrapped you around their finger? Hell no. More than likely, they’re going to make your experience complete shit and it’s not worth the stress and effort. In this community, you don’t owe anyone anything.
If you don’t know about how to go say ‘no’, the easiest way is just saying, "Thank you for asking. I’m very flattered but at this time, I’m not really interested. I appreciate you asking though!" I’ve never gotten backlash from being nice. And you’re not being rude by looking out for yourself. That’s the thing people need to wrap their heads around: You. Are. Not. Being. Rude.
Just remember it also takes courage to ask someone to play along. There’s a lot of anxiety when it comes to asking for interaction, so giving a soft, gentle answer is always the best way to go. Don’t be an asshole when answering, you’ll never get ANYONE to play with you. No matter how popular you are, we’ve all been denied before. Positive actions can give positive reactions, even in a negative situation. No need to burn bridges and ruin your reputation. But the example I gave is literally the most perfect answer. Copy and paste it, for all I care if it makes it easier to look out for yourself, do it.
TL;DR:
Don’t need reason to to say no.
Be polite when declining.
Don’t take abuse.
Carry on.
It’s a big community, you aren’t the first, you will not be the last, and you will get it yourself. In the end, no matter why you RP, it’s an outlet for creativity. Play how you want to play, with who you want to play with.

When Oogie gets in a mood, a real stinker where not all the booze, cards and girls in the world can seem to fix things then he goes on a laundry binge. Since most of his clothes need to be dry cleaned that means he usually raids the kid's rooms (And sometimes Sally's) washing everything he can get his hands on until he starts to feel better.

((Hi there, sorry, not dead but getting close because it's exam season, horrraaayyyyy! I'll be done with school on the 17th but then I have to go in for some minor surgery on the 22nd and will be drugged and loopy for several days after which means on a whole, my activity isn't going to be great. I think that for now, I'll be on semi-hiatus in which I will still do RP things but it'll just all be monumentally slow. Apologies and thanks for your patience. Hope to see you all again soon!))

She was strong, and quiet. Oogie hated it. He wanted her to shout, to scream, to lash out at him so he had a reason to hit back. If she was crumbling, he wanted to see it. He needed to see the result of his anger manifest itself physically, to know that it was working. Crying wasn't enough. He wanted to bring Shock to her knees. She was getting there already, he could tell from the way her lip wobbled and the beginnings of tears filling her eyes but it wasn't enough.
"I don't know, I don't know" he mimicked "You clearly don't know much, do you honey? Otherwise we wouldn't be here in the first place."
He chuckled to himself, but it wasn't a humorous sound, but rather low and threatening. He was a predator, narrowing in for the kill. This wasn't a laugh, it was a growl. He had his eyes locked on Shock, moments away from striking. If she wanted to run, this was her warning. It would have to be now. Oogie was out for blood, he wasn't going to wait.
"And yet I find myself once again, in a mess, because my sorry ass excuses for help are too frigging STUPID to figure things out on their own and can't so much as tie their damn SHOELACES without my help let alone pull off one simple, freaking JOB."
This was his roar, his thunder. He was up close and personal, mere inches away from Shock so she got the full impact of his tirade but with his hand clamped like a vice on her shoulder so she couldn't escape. If she had been smart, then she would've run, but nobody ever did. Nobody ever could. Oogie was too fast. If he got you in his grasp, that was it. All that was left to do was weather out the storm and pray it wouldn't hit too hard.
"Please don't be angry.." ((Hello!!))
"Oh sweetheart, believe me, anger got dropped a few towns back."

"I am absolutely furious."

Ship meme: Oogie/Sally
((God bless your little nonnie soul))
Christmas Ship Meme
Which one of them:
Spikes the eggnog?
Oogie, hands down.
Hangs the stockings?
Sally, she loves decorating because she never really got to do it as a kid
Leaves cookies and milk out to keep up with the santa tradition?
Also Sally, but Oogie’s the one who eats them after.
"Accidentally" throws away the fruitcake
Oogie. He does not abide by cake and fruit in the same creation, though might hesitate if there’s rum baked into it.
Goes overboard on the whipped cream?
Totally Oogie. Whipped cream, on everything and everyone.
Is the inevitable Christmas grinch?
Also Oogie, but he’s naturally a grump so this is nothing new.
Wakes up first on Christmas?
Oogie. For all his grousing he’s secretly an excited child…and it’s a whole holiday based on getting things. That’s plenty reason for excitement on his part.
Rolls their eyes as the same cheesy carol plays in the stores for the millionth time?
Oogie, unless it’s Santa Baby, then he’s dancing right along and trying to get Sally to do it with him.
Starts playing Christmas music the day after Halloween?
Neither of them, actually. Halloween is almost sacred to these two, they want to keep it in their hearts year around.
Decorates the Christmas tree?
Sally. Oogie will help if the bribe is good enough.

Drabble: Save Me
He should have been watching her more closely. Even years after the fact, the thought haunts him to this day. Call him cruel, call him heartless, call him whatever it is you choose but no one, not even Oogie himself can deny that in his own twisted way, he cares about his kids. It may not be love, exactly, but it’s something and more than anyone else has ever done for them.
She couldn’t have been much older than nine or ten, the boys holy terrors at seven and six. By then, they were already learning the joys of breaking and the art of pain. Playground tyrants, Oogie was loath to take them anywhere but they had been whining to be fed for hours now and he was too hungover to bother actually cooking. Like any parent in his position, he turned to the modern miracle of fast food.
Hot meals and a place to run wild were all just a car ride away, and without any qualms about nutrition or other people’s children, it was just what Oogie needed. He had herded the boys into the big, plastic play structure while Shock helped him handle the food. The restaurant was busy, but not crowded and it didn’t take long for them to find a table by a line of windows and adjacent to the playroom. From here, Oogie could keep the boys close enough to shout if needed but with enough distance that the odds of anyone actually figuring out they were his responsibility were slim. With any luck, they’d all be able to eat their fill and he’d get a bit of a break before Lock and Barrel got them kicked out.
It had happened while his back was turned, which is usually the case though Oogie wouldn’t know this until after. Barrel had taken the notion into his head that jumping from the top of the slide into the ball pit was clearly the best use of his time. This would’ve been fine with Oogie, except the boy kept neglecting to tell the other kids to get out of the way. If anything, he seemed to be targeting them, each landing slightly closer than Oogie would’ve liked. Lock, as always, was egging him on. Shock was laughing, she felt she was too old for the playrooom, even now, and had chosen to keep Oogie company at their table. She was a good kid in her own way, quiet and thoughtful, smart too. The man would never admit it, but he liked having her around. He had only been gone for a few seconds. Barrel had taken off like a shot as soon as he had seen Oogie coming and was now in hiding. It was in those few seconds that things had gone terribly, terribly wrong.
"Shock? Kiddo? What’s wrong with you now?"
There was no response, save for a faint, strangled sound that Oogie almost didn’t hear, the place was so noisy. At first he had thought Shock was goofing around, she was making some ghastly faces and kept hitting his arm. If it had been one of the boys, then Oogie wouldn’t have given it a second thought, but Shock didn’t play games, not with him anyway.
"Shock? Sweetheart?" he tried again, a spark of concern flickered in his belly as she grasped at his jacket. Her hand was small, her fingers slim, but the grip strong and frantic. She made a grasp at her throat with her other hand, and it was then Oogie knew. In a flash, he had jumped up and pulled Shock into his grasp, turning her around so her back was to his chest. He wrapped his arms under hers bear hug style and placed his clasped hands just under her ribs. A quick jerk upwards and Shock heaved. He did it again, and again, muttering "breathe, baby, breathe" as though it were a mantra.
A crowd had started to gather. Someone asked if they should call an ambulance but Oogie waved them off. The boys were with him now, clinging to his pantlegs and not quiet crying but certainly close. Oogie ignored them, his whole world brought down to him and Shock. He kept thrusting his hands against her abdomen, hoping against hope he wouldn’t break her ribs. With a cough, a sputter and finally a gasp, the bread that had caught in Shock’s throat flew out of her mouth and onto their table. She took her first, few fragile breaths beneath Oogie’s hands, which shook along with her. They didn’t stay long after, Oogie already dragging Shock and her brothers out to the parking lot, his threats of legal action echoing behind them. It was only once they were out by the car and free from prying eyes that Oogie gathered his kids into his arms. The boys were crying in earnest now, dribbling snot and tears against his sleeves while Shock soaked his shirt.
"You’re such idiots." he whispered into the girl’s hair "All of you have gotta be the dumbest kids sateside. Don’t you ever scare me like that ever again. Buncha morons, honest to God, you all got any idea how much funerals cost these days? I can’t afford to bury any of you, you need to be careful with yourselves cause I certainly ain’t gonna bother. Especially not if you’re all gonna act like idiots."
There was no harshness in his voice despite his words, only kindness made gruff by fear. The kids hiccuped and whimpered has he hugged them all in turn. This day, and the fear that came with it, would pass. Oogie would feed Shock applesauce and soup for a week and she would rail against him for it, but that too would be forgot. Oogie would be the one who would remember, the only one who would have the slightest inkling about that day and the time his strange, little family was almost ripped apart at the seams.
