How did I not realize the enormous fun it is to work on abstract backgrounds or pictures in acrylics?! Unbelievable. I am doing this with watercolors a lot, but for some unknown reason I have never tried it with acrylics. That stops here and now. Days 11-15 of #21daysinmyartworld challenge by @taraleaver As you may have noticed I skipped a few days, so I am catching up on them in one post. Turning point - I'll name just a couple. We moved to the USA in 2011 and I had a lot of time on my hands without a day job. So I turned my photography into a business and sold fine art prints while furthering my Photoshop skills to do art composites. In 2015 I had a windsurfing fall, which for months took my mobility to roam in nature or NYC for photos. So I turned back to my child/teenage/young adult love for watercolors. And from there I kept evolving to where I am now. Current motifs - just scroll down my page here and you'll see… Fantasy, female faces and female forms. What you won't find here yet is my love for abstracts. You can expect more of those in the future. Process insight - it really depends on motif and media. Most times I start with a pencil sketch before I start layering a) watercolors or b) acrylics or c) mixed media. I always step away from my work for a while to return with fresh eyes and continue. While working on the image I usually take photos. The small screen is the equivalent of looking at it from further away or through a mirror. Sold - I have sold photography prints, but none of my paintings yet. Day 10 of #21daysinmyartworld challenge by @taraleaver - today 'Artist selfie' Like so many artists especially photographers, which I am, too, I hate each and every photo of myself, no matter if someone else takes it or it is a selfie. Well, almost each photo. Every now and then there is one that I find almost acceptable. Those usually end up being the avatars on social media. For someone who almost never is okay or even happy with selfies I am amazed that I took 2 within 3 months 😱. Day 9 of #21daysinmyartworld challenge by @taraleaver - today 'where the art happens' Yay! I get to share my beautiful desk again 💖. *swipe to see more of my CC, creative corner* After years of using an old table we had no other use for anymore, I invested this year, well 2020, in me. I got this beautiful, handmade desktop on Etsy and combined it with a stand-up base from Autonomous, so now I can sit or stand and make art while looking out back. Lots of storage in the old Ikea shelves, but obviously I could use even more. My iPads both for drawing, painting and for listening to workshops or music while I am creating. Currently I am making two little 4x4” mini art journals that I sewed with watercolor paper on Sunday. Now I am ‘beautifying’ the cardboard covers and then we'll see. Sometimes it is a walk in nature or in NYC or abike ride in nature snapping pics with the iPhone or it's watching other artists on YouTube or in workshops, sometimes it is an anime or film. Day 6 of #21daysinmyartworld challenge by @taraleaver - today 'current challenge' Mine is not only current, but more like longtime and ongoing. Well, actually there is two. 1) Actually making the time to make art while working a demanding corporate job that pays the bills. And it is not only time, but mentally detaching from said job to be able to create. In the past making art had always been the balance, this past year shifted that to the point that I couldn't create. Now I am trying very hard to find that balance again. Last week was the first week in 2021 back at work and I have a feeling this challenge is going to be a tough one. 2) I find it very challenging to work a) in just one medium e.g. watercolors, ink, graphite, Photoshop etc. and b) in just one style pretty realistic and detailed, lose and abstract or photoart / photo composites. And when I say challenging it is with respect to the online world, where it seems you have to stick to one medium, one style to be recognizable and successful. I cannot do that, I need diversity. But - I won't show just everything here 😄. Day 5 of #21daysinmyartworld challenge by @taraleaver - today 'favorite tool' Here is a little assembly of my favorite tools to make art. Missing in the picture is the substrate, which 99% is heavy paper to be able to play with my beloved watercolors. Fun fact: most of the colors / paint in this Schmincke pallet are - ahem - more than 30 probably 40 years old, and belonged to my father. They still work beautifully. Rather recently I added a few new colors, mostly 'Windsor & Newton Cotman watercolors'. Day 3 of 21 Days in My Art World challenge by @taraleaver - today 'my latest WIP' Monday night I was watching Tamara Laporte's LifeBook 2021 Happy Owl session, but somehow didn't feel an owl. So I started looking up bird symbolism and then googled photos thinking of my favorite Caribbean Island Bonaire. Which we were to visit in just a couple of days, but, just like last year we had to cancel the trip due to the pandemic. Not surprisingly flamingos showed up and so I started sketching a couple in my mixed media art journal (9x12). Then last night after a long day at work I looked at the sketch wondering about which medium and style to work in. Hint - being very tired is not good for decision making 😉. But I wanted to paint and so I went for watercolors wet in wet and put those on paper, very loosely and very relaxing. Unfortunately it means that now I have to decide if to refine the image or even leave it as is. Decisions, decisions - I'll have to see how I feel about this tonight. I saw this post, 21 Days in My Art World, on @christinefaithart 's and @taraleaver 's insta and thought this sounds fun and lowkey enough for me to tag along. I also love the idea of creating a bit more of a community here on my page. So what better way than to give you a glimpse into my art world. To start off, the prompt (swipe right for the complete list) for today is: A favorite painting. That's actually a hard one for me, because i really love my photo art over @imagesbycw, but a lot of my paintings were either done in courses, so I don't consider them 100% mine or I am not completely in love with them.
