Splatoon is such a gay game.

Literally in the first game you get to choose whatever gender you want to be and dress your little inkling in WHATEVER YOU WANT!!! Which like okay whatever but listen the first one came out in 2015 so its really cool that the women are more then just for the male gaze... And you can be like "wdym male gaze this is a kids game" and I can argue all I want about how the male gaze is ingrained in like everything in modern society BUT Callie and Marie being a massive part of the storymode campaign and not just the news broadcast hosts that appear to be cute and welcome you to the game is incredible for that time, especially since games like fallout and metal gear solid and the witcher were dominating-- both being male mc doing male mc stuff.

Not to say other non-testosterone fests weren't popular, Undertale, Life is Strange, and Until Dawn were popular during 2015 as well, showing that there is an audience that wants to play games like that, storybased games with a wider gender spectrum. A more diverse character list can help the game become more popular with other audiences.

in 2017 it gets better because Splat2 gives us LESBIANS!!!! and their queer octo child. Like splatoon 2 together kind of shows its wokeness because the octo vs inkling species war stuff but that could be a whole other post. Splat2 has Pearl and Marina, who are very obviously in love with each other. Whether it be platonically or romantically, they are soulmates. And listen!! Marina is such a cutie, from her design she doesn't look like much more than an anxious sweetheart with her upturned eyebrows and cropped vest top and dressed in teal and black, and Pearl compliments her perfectly with her one piece white dress and pink leggings, they are almost opposites in design but they are together in music. Their story together literally begins with music, and it is ingrained in their relationship.

And in the dlc campaign, octo-expansion, the player is an octoling for the first time, and they slay a cropped top regardless of gender. The males also wearing the same clothes as the females without it being made "more masculine" is very progressive for the game to do, especially when for other items there is a "male version" and a "female version" for the clothing on the playable characters.

Splatoon 3 only expands on everything Splat2 set up. Gone is the gender restraints, allowing any gender to have any eyebrows and any hair, the only restrictions being species, octoling or inkling. Not to mention, the idols for the third game are the most gnc bitches I've ever seen.

Splatoon 3 finally gives us a male idol, Big Man. He is a type of ray, and it is unclear if he has a more humanoid form like the other idols do. Shiver's gender was literally the most debated thing when the trailer launched, and I'm pretty sure that in the japanese trailer they used a specific pronoun that translates to "them", so everyone thought Shiver was the first non-binary idol. Later we learned Shiver is a she but thats okay because we have ACHT!!!!! Acht canonically goes by they/them pronouns, and it is so cool that one of the main characters is transgender.

Basically with each addition of the Splatoon series they get gayer. welcome to the yuri renaissance fuckers!!

i think with all the splatoon idol groups performing next to eachother like this you can really see the differences in their dance / performance styles.....

the squid sisters being very classically idol-y with clean choreographed moves, keeping the same general positions on the stage thru most of their performances, really giving that jpop idol vibe and that experienced vibe. they sure have been doing this a while!!

whereas off the hook's dance moves are much more loose, based on the energy of the song. they're just kinda doing whatever (affectionate) and the two interact and move around the stage a lot. it fits their more spontanious vibe

and deep cut have more set positioning onstage (shiver and frye at each end of big man's fins... very cute), but their movements feel a lot more, flowy? it almost has a stageplay / traditional opera vibe, i feel like they could be telling me a folk story through song-

it's really neat!!! they really put a lot of care into giving them all unique performance styles and i've never thought to really look close at it before!

I'll never get over how important Ebb & Flow is to Off the Hook's story

It's their first single, the song that catapulted them to stardom, and so much more

It's Marina's first song, the little composition she recorded on her half-busted keyboard that convinced this little punk squid with that big voice on Mount Nantai that they should make music together

It's a song Pearl wanted to be so careful with, she was actually nervous and had to do numerous takes for it when she usually only needs one or two, because she needed to get it JUST RIGHT

And it just KEEPS COMING BACK!!! Ebb & Flow is part of the final boss battle in both Octo Expansion and Side Order, when you fill your palette with color chips you can use them to play the first part of Ebb & Flow's chorus, their solo live concert ended with Ebb & Flow

It obviously means so much to Pearl and Marina, it's the song that united them and it's the song that keeps making them stronger together, and no matter how much amazing music they make (and boy do they make such amazing music, banger after banger no exceptions)

i love how for a series with an almost completely non-male cast of characters splatoon feels so chill about gender presentation

callie is "the pink one" with long hair and an upbeat but sweet personality yet she wears shorts and pants almost all the time. pearl is loud and opinionated and aggressive but she wears dresses and her signature color is pink, and that's chill. marina is the more "traditionally feminine" one and she's kind and sweet and soft, but she's a genius who accelerated through school and she's an engineer who works with machines and builds weapons, and she wears shorts and pants and a pantsuit, and that's just who she is. shiver... whatever shiver has going on. even ignoring the pronoun confusion surrounding deep cut's reveal, i definitely agree that they just have. something androgynous going on with them, even though they seem very feminine-presenting. even fem eight, they have a crop top and a miniskirt and heels in octo expansion, but they also get to wear a jumpsuit in side order, along with of course rocking the single earring, which even masc eight gets to keep. and of course, acht - even though they're "the non-binary character", they still wear a dress! they still have earrings! they still have long hair! they don't have to be masculine to be non-binary - they still get to present traditionally feminine, and it doesn't cancel out their identity at all!

man. i love this game and this series so much. no wonder it attracts such a queer fandom lol

End-of-Splatoon thoughts.

Thinking about how since the very start, Splatoon has had a feature where players can draw and post artwork and spot them as graffiti on walls or billboards. Or how the weapons have always been paint brushes and rollers and ballpoint pens. Since its inception, Splatoon has been dedicated to engaging its players with the act of creation and creative expression, showing them how their art can build communities and (literally) change the world.

Thinking about finding golden human-made music discs buried underground for thousands of years, and a grand finale music festival. About the Voyager Golden Records. About those human handprints etched into concrete in Alterna. Did those human artists know it would end like this? First a fiery death and then, eventually, a worldwide celebration of music to represent our shared past, present, and future. Did they know that their songs, insignificant in the face of extinction, would one day become the solution that will save the next dominant life-form from the same fate?

Thinking about how eerily similar the Octarian domes are to Alterna. About how close Inklings and Octolings were to repeating the same mistakes as humans. But their doomed fates were undone not by some miracle technology or military power or a rocket, but by music.

Thinking about how humans wiped themselves out with war, and our parting gifts were liquid crystals that somehow paired with the DNA of primeval inklings and somehow infused them with our memories and culture and a Song. And 12,000 years in the future, that same Song will end a war.

Thinking about how art and music and punk culture and rock & roll and friendly competition and petty arguments and water guns aren’t uniquely human concepts, but the fundamental qualities of intelligent life. An inheritable spirit that can cross evolutionary bounds.

Thinking about the theme of Splatoon, that art and music and fun will not die with the human race. That every piece of art we create is a seed we sow for future generations to reap. That our legacy is ingrained into the crust of the earth. That long after we’re gone, the oceans will remember, and they’ll pick up where we left off.

Thinking about how Splatoon says that the essence of humanity –– the thing that will outlive us –– isn't war or prejudice or destruction or greed, it's a song.
