Louise Bourgeois who has been a big inspiration to me through last trimester and this trimester. I have always been inspired by her ethuasim in materials, however not recently looked into her work since changing my way of working. But I thought I would include her because she was my main inspiration.

Kris Lemsalu
Another artist I looked into who looked a lot of mix media, using quirky and bold materials in order to make sculptures. Maximalist, visceral, and sexualized, Lemsalu’s pieces evoke the wild, bestial side of human beings and civilizations, and are underscored by feminist themes. I really like the way she considers all different media to create her sculptures.

Antonys work is photographs of the figure that illuminates the beauty of female perception. They are very detailed and all remain in black & white. His work inspired me to create images of the spine. I found this a good template to use instead of looking into atonomy, I have images in my studio practice of various spine from each person I have captured

LAND ART
I have made temporary sculptures that portray a sense of Goldsworthy’s work, I would use natural resources to create a spine whilst handcrafted; bending, twisting and curving certain elements that would represent bone structure with the spine. I really like the idea of using temporary sculptures as they are something that can not be seen again once photographed, this is where Andy Goldsworthys work came to mind

I have made works that have replaced the spine with materials. I find that this reflects Rebecca body extensions and the way she uses materials that restrict the body. I used materials that would stop the body from moving by replacing it with materials that do not expand.

Degree Show Propsal
Degree Show proposal
My practice springs from my interest in visualising the spine, the backbone.  The spine is an important part of the body that facilitates our mobility. I wanted to explore its subtle beauty. I work in sculpture using found materials, and I explore the spine in creative play, experimentation and the manipulation of these materials. I found ways to engage with the materials by reshaping and transforming them into these unique spinal cords. My interest lies in the uniquely handcrafted nature of the sculptures; some have a minimal elegance and others are bold and less sophisticated. The work draws inspiration from Louise Bourgeois, and her habit of suspending her sculptures from the ceiling.  In particular, her work, Arch of Hysteria, displayed a curved bronze figure hanging from the ceiling. However, lockdown has altered my practice forcing me to create with other materials such as natural and 'throw away' resources. Exploring these elements has allowed me to create temporary sculptures that have hints of land art within them. This particular way of working  became inspired by Andy Goldsworthy who is drawn by natural materials and using objects within his surroundings to create temporary sculptures. I drew specific attention towards his from 1982 balanced river stones. My practice soon relied on structure to ensure everything would stay in place. I have tried to capture the essence of the spine by placing resources together that would eventually create curves and bone like features. I felt the involvement with nature and the human spine connect way of living. I have also been interested in fixing materials around the human spine to create a sense of bodyscape, this has elements of Rebecca Horns Body extensions where my materials have been replaced to be the spine and bones of the body.
My initial response to the degree show was using a contrast of conventional and found materials and manipulating them together to create medium sized spinal sculptures. Then hanging them as a mobile structure from the ceiling as I had done in the previous semester so they could move freely  which has been inspired by Bourgeois. But, within a formation of a wind chime, as the wind chime would represent a sense of motion, but also calmness as my sculptures in the studio represent weird characteristics about them. So this would show a diverse between the spines and the instillation. I feel that if this would not have happened my idea would of as  followed. However, I have changed mindsets because I changed my way of practice. For the degree show I would of looked into bring the outside in, making a submerge of grass, leaves, twigs etc.. and have some being hung on fishing wire so they represented floating in the air. Then placed some of the natural materials on to the wall, like a diarrhea of nature. Then made a temporary sculpture around this on a large scale. Capturing a sense of the body puking the spine up but through nature, as if it needs to be seen. I have noticed with a lot of my ideas I did not consist one but multiple and I feel like I have had so many ideas that it has became a whole development of exploration and what works for me as an artist and what does not.

Temporary sculpture.
I made a spinal tail bone using silicone, I got the ridges and bumps with it by using the same technique in welding a wave mig. I wait for it to dry and placed it on top of a gaint leaf, I love how the leaf became the canvas for the sculpture. The contrast between the man made material and the natural resources show a interesting combination throughout this sculpture, I had to find a way to balance this the silicone on top of the leaf without it dropping because of how heavy it became.

Using different images and merging them together, I like how each image represents the body differently. The first image shows the curve stance tracing in thin air and the stood stance up against the tree almost like it is meant to be part of the nature itself. The second image blend the spine completely out as if the tree is the spine and the top is supported by nature. The third image shows how we are nature in itself but merge into humans

Manipulation of the spine, within the body.
Here is an example of using the body to demonstrate the spine’s motion. In the first image you can see how the spine isn’t straight or inline with this figure. This figure is me pictured with an acute damage disc, which is connected within the spine. As I bend more away the spine seems to come back in line & the last image shows the curve within the top of the spine. It’s interesting to see this with someone who has a condition within the spine and seeing how the movement is retracted and extracted each time the spine moves

Having experience working with children in a arts and craft environment as well as educational arts.. I found this website most intriguing called child in mind. As it isn’t just based on mental health experience, it also includes adoption support, for parents and newly children being involved. Which I find really interesting because there is not any other places I know that support and help with adoptions Via art therapy. “ Did you know that therapeutic support is available to you and your child, via the government funded Adoption Support Fund”
When looking closer into this website, it exploits trauma therapy for parents struggling with children as well as the nature of child like therapy. So it is very diverse and fits each need, but involves around children whether that be how the parent feels of the child, or the child itself.
They do different types of therapy with children such as play, filia and creative play, which is the part that stands out to me the most. With young children you have to think about the risk assessments in what materials/mediums are used. So when this is carried out, It’s creative play for children to express themselves in a safe and harmonious way. I like how it is kept professional for the adults but also immature for the children. It’s an interaction that can fulfill each clients needs. I decided to send my cv over along with a statement to ensure they understood my reasonings for emailing. I explained how I would like to understand more of how child in mind works and if there is any voluntary work being held within the facility/online (Due to covid)

ARTIST CV
Plain and simple.
As my experience hasn’t expanded yet I have wrote what I have done and achievements.
Positive: includes what I can do as an artist
Negative: really simple, not much experience.
However I can work on this with volenteer work and 1-1 talks on art therapy. It would be interesting if I could just get into mental health and work my way from there with voluntary on the side
