Curious to see what other's in the community are using for their whump accounts! Mine is currently a side blog but I've been thinking about making the switch to creating it as it's own account.

June of Doom 2025 - Day One

----------x----------
Hi!
I've been excited for this event since the prompts were announced! For Day 1 I decided to think up something with a character I'm still developing, in a soft sci-fi cyberpunk world. I have many other characters related to him (I'm particularly excited about Annelise, let's see if I can write something with her in it!).
So, this features Dan, a man who's trying to figure himself out while working jobs and running errands for people, just on the edge of legality.
This story includes kidnapping, violence and mentions of drugs and addiction.
Word count: 1,394
Hope you enjoy!
----------x----------
Dan doesn't think he's ever known true darkness.
The shoebox of an apartment he rents has an animated billboard in front of his window, the light from the LEDs so strong it bleeds through the corners of his blackout curtains.
The back of Annelise’s clinic was completely windowless, but the times she let him spend the night there he was always accompanied by a constellation of tiny lights from the medical equipment.
All his life he had some form of light, even a pinkish nothingness through closed eyelids.
This was something else. Nothingness spread out infinitely across all directions, his sight rendered completely obsolete.
The agonizing emptiness only made way to more awfulness being picked up by his other senses. The cold, hard chair under his tights, the rope, holding his arms back behind the chair, just tight enough to not cut off circulation from his wrists, but burn painfully against his skin. The residual chemical hitting the back of his nostrils that left a trace of a headache and dizziness at the back of his mind, probably inhalatory anesthesia, begging to be turned off.
He thought he had started to hallucinate shapes when a yellow brightness started to form in the distance, but soon a man holding a lamp with a candle inside came to view, closely followed by someone else. It stinged his retinas, even being so tiny.
Dan tried to think of how to handle the situation. He rummaged around in his brain, still a bit dazed from being knocked out, trying to find what could be the reason for this. There were people who had good reason to be pissed at him, but not to this extent. A natural born charmer and liar, he had taken part in a few scams, but nothing big enough to warrant a kidnapping.
“All right, pretty boy,” the first man came close to him before Dan could trace a plan on how to de-escalate. He was big and bald - not anyone he knew. “You know how this kind of thing goes, the hard way or the easy way. So you can tell us where Juli is and walk away whenever you want”.
Juli.
Juli had a dark bedroom. In the nights that he spent there, back when he was still pretending their relationship could work, he enjoyed how it was probably the darkest place he had ever slept in. And yet, she had a bunch of implants that would occasionally blink to indicate their status, inform of messages or warnings, and one, which Dan was especially fond of, attached to her pancreas, a bigger screen in her torso that was always bright, just below her breasts.
A swift kick in the shin had him pulled from his reminiscence and bent over, straining against the ropes.
“If you still aren't awake enough to have a conversation we can make sure to fix that really quick,” the man said over Dan's moans.
“Right-” Dan said through gritted teeth. He shook his foot to try to dissipate the pain. “Okay, just - just give me a moment.”
He didn't have an idea of what Juli could have done to make him get kidnapped. But she, not unlike everyone else close to Dan, was hardly innocent when it comes to crime. This part of the city just seemed to foster this kind of survival tactic.
“Right,” Dan took a deep breath. “I haven't seen Juli in almost a year. She used to live in the S. Franco street, but I'm pretty sure she left before I last saw her.” The truth was a good place to start: the information offered minimal danger to the woman, and showed he was willing to collaborate what he knew.
The man with the candle laughed. “You know that's not what I mean.”
Dan frowned. Maybe the anesthesia had hit harder than he thought, because he wasn't following at all. “I'm sorry, I,  uh… what can I call you?” He tried to approach with an angle of friendliness. He doubted the man would appreciate it, but it could give himself a couple of seconds to think of what he could say to avoid being kicked in the other leg.
“So you're trying to tell me,” the man said, ignoring his question. “That if someone, hypothetically, wanted to buy from her, sell to her, or maybe just settle some debts with her people?”
Ah, fuck.
“Is this about Spike?”, he said before he could catch himself. Spike, a mix of synthetic opioid and anphetamines, with different release speeds, beautifully counteracting each other’s undesirable effects. It hadn’t been in his life for a while, and he worked hard for that.
The man gave a lopsided smile, grim in the low light. “Aren’t you smart?” He seemed to be trying not to laugh. “So, where do you guys meet?”
“I-,” He shouldn’t have admitted to knowing about Juli’s involvement with Spike. “I have never dealt, I don’t think Juli-”
“Look,” the man with the light walked around Dan. The other stayed put where he was. “I’ve been to Granite Chapel. Don’t try to tell me you don’t hang around there. And don’t tell me Juli doesn’t hang around you.”
Dan froze at the name of the street. This conversation was starting to get too close to where people he cared about lived. He truly hadn’t seen Juli in a long time, but a lot of his friends, all tangled up in some sort of shady business, were all close by.
The other man was slowly obscured by shadows while the light moved.
“I’m not-” Dan licked his lips, trying to keep cool. “I’ve never dealt. I’ve been sober for about six months now,” six months and fourteen days. He’s been counting. “I know Juli fenced for a while nearby, but…”
He flexed his hands. The talk of sobriety always brought an uncomfortable itch under his skin. He felt a bead of sweat slip from his temple.
“Fenced for Alessa, Modi, and a person who calls themselves Shadow Particle,” the man continued after Dan trailed off. He stopped walking, coming closer to Dan’s face. “You did know, right? That it goes beyond Spike?”
Dan didn’t. His voice trembled as he noticed it was all getting a little out of hand. “I- I have friends in the Granite. I work jobs there, we might even have crossed paths there, yeah?” His brain desperately combed through anything he could say to take the conversation away from Granite Chapel. “I know Modi. I don’t remember the street, but if you give me a map-”
“That’s enough.” Dan flinchex, expecting to be kicked again, but the man stood still in front of him. He seemed to study him. “You know, I haven't introduced my friend. This is Kai,” he gestured to the man behind him. “Kai is blind, which sucks ass in a time where everything is a touchscreen, if not a gesture screen.”
He lowered himself to be face to face with Dan.
“But you know what he's really good for?” He continued, a sinister smile illuminated by the flame in front of him. “Scaring people into giving us what we want.”
The room, which by candlelight already looked boundless, was plunged into darkness again as he blew his candle. Dan could have cried at the loss of the only visual input if he hadn't tensed up, unable to predict what would come next.
He heard movement around him, slow at first and then swift, he tried to track it, but he hadn't had time to get accustomed when he was struck across the jaw, teeth clattering and sending a shockwave through his skull.
He didn't have the time to think about trying to listen for the direction of the next attack when he was kicked in the stomach, then in the head when he doubled over.
When Dan had parted ways with Juli, he hoped he'd never have to think about her again.
Now she was once again occupying every corner of his brain, as he tried to scrape any crumb of information that could be useful.
Steps approached his side. He tensed, but they stopped. In the dark, somewhere, the man was standing, ready to strike at any moment.
He better make up something plausible about Juli so he can leave all of this behind him again.

consider: a story that seems at first to be a standard mech pilot rehabilitation short story. Picked up from a crashed mech, a street corner, an official adoption program— goes through the early stages when they can barely move or eat or do anything that isn’t a direct order. Slowly relearns to speak, to develop hobbies, to live as a person again. Has that moment when their caretaker hugs them and tells them it’s going to be okay eventually, no matter how long it takes.
however throughout the entire process, the former pilot still can’t believe that they’ll ever be able to fully live as a person again. They still think that too many parts of them have been taken for them to ever be anything resembling whole again. No matter how much they hear that it gets better, they just aren’t able to believe that they’ll ever be as functional as their caretaker.
But there’s something strange. The caretaker seems to know a lot about this for some random citizen that just happened to find a discarded weapon on a street corner one day. There are guides online. There’s research that can be done on how to help something become someone again. But even that can’t tell you about how it feels to have a purpose. A purpose that causes untold destruction, and slowly unravels you until you’re nothing more than the organic CPU of a machine. A purpose that you once hated every moment of, but then loved because no matter what you were doing, no matter what it was doing to you— it was all that you were. It was your purpose as a weapon.
And then you lost it.
But the thing is, the caretaker knows. Knows exactly what it’s like to lose that purpose. To lose that part of you that millions of dollars of military technology had made sure was the only part of you. She knows what it feels like. She knows exactly how to recreate the sound of a mech hangar by splicing together downloaded sound samples. She knows the voice of the mech AI, and mimics it to calm them down when they wake up from a nightmare. It doesn’t make sense how a civilian could know this.
until they see the scar on her neck where a serial number was lasered off, and realize that she used to be a pilot too
