like i USED to see it primarily in fandom discourse (op says something along the lines of “[media/character/ship] sucks for these listed reasons” and comments all agree except for one guy like “oh i’m Deep in enemy territory”) which is genuinely just not that deep usually and it’s not what i mean when i say this

what i mean is people engaging in content surrounding greater issues, namely AI. if you look at anti-AI post and comment anything along the lines of “being in enemy territory” because you’re pro gen AI, i genuinely don’t think you have any critical thinking skills. because you’re dismissing an entire plethora of counter arguments via a broad generalization.

BEGGING people to consume content critically instead of publicly going “well this isn’t a rehashing of my own existing opinion being thrown back at me!” i don’t even mean “engage with it” i mean fucking THINK about it. if someone says something that challenges the way you think, grapple with it for a fucking millisecond before announcing your personally cultivated house of mirrors that is your feed.

because, yes, okay, we can dance around the legality and copyright law and fair use till our clicky little tap shoes give out.

but the heart of the matter is that theft in reuse without attributed credit (as gen ai developers typically choose not to / are unable to implement, and ai models tend to suck at actually doing) is plagiarism. it doesn’t matter if ai takes from a scientific journal, or a fanfic, or a sixth grader’s fuckin pixton. by every definition given to every one of us somewhere around the secondary school level, these things constitute plagiarism (not an exhaustive list):

- if you take a quote (typically 4 or more consecutive words identical to original, not including article words or figures of speech) without putting it in quotation marks AND citing

- if you take information that isn’t “common knowledge” (ie “abe lincoln was the 16th prezzy of the united states) and regurgitate it without citing the source from which you obtained the information

- if you just point blank copy paste several sentences/paragraphs without quotation marks

essentially, anytime you try to pass some shit off as your own when it ISN’T, that’s plagiarism!! these are all fucking things gen ai does. ai is INTENDED to pass shit off as its own, its platform depends on it. “chatgpt says— google ai overview says—“ no it fucking doesn’t. some person typed out a goddamn sentence and now it’s being spat back at you without a name attached to it so chatgpt can claim it as its own. this precisely is why i often informally refer to gen ai as “the plagiarism machine.”

no artist wants to search the background of some ai slop shoved in their face and wonder why the eyes on a character looks like an incongruent amalgam of eyes they once drew. no writer wants to come across a paper where the authors admit to using chatgpt and do a double take at a piece of prose that sounds so similar to something they once wrote in their most vulnerable moments, only for it to be soullessly regurgitated in a way that obscures the rhyme and reason behind their word choices.

is intellectual property a lie made up by walt disney to keep mickey mouse out of the public domain? if you wanna believe that, sure, no one can stop you.

but is it arguably dystopian to flaunt one’s lack of principles under the thin veil of condescension towards the smallest of creators? is it insane to flaunt your pride in unyielding loyalty to the plagiarism machine? to taunt the artists whose works comprise your entire database, creators whom your programs would be little to nothing without, and to dismiss their wishes as you gut the soul from their creation as you tell a machine to emulate it?

it is absolutely fucking insane that for like 2 years now there has just been an internet-wide plagiarism machine that can freely steal from creators en masse no permissions needed, and there are STILL no laws banning this shit or ways to force them to delete their datasets rather than just sending a complaint and praying. It's fucking ridiculous. It's perfectly legal theft with no effort and no repercussions, and it's already left a giant trail of digital litter all over the internet. The internet and creativity and any hope of a future involving art is being killed day by day, and nothing is being done to stop it at all. This world is frankly ridiculous.
