SHERLOCK HOLMES (1984-1994) ♦︎ 40th Anniversary ♦︎
“To me, the Sherlock Holmes stories are about a great friendship. The two men are interdependent; without Watson, Holmes might well have burnt out on cocaine long ago. And Watson leads a pretty dull life, enlivened only by his adventures with Holmes. I hope the series shows how important friendship is.” – Jeremy Brett
After taking an impromptu dip in the river during an investigation, Holmes and Watson return to Baker Street to get warm and wrap up the case with Inspector Lestrade, who smugly pours them drinks while they shiver and sneeze
While on a ship investigating a murder, Holmes gets attacked by a snake (yes, really) and Watson saves him by pushing Holmes (and the snake attached to him) off the ship into the river and jumping in after to rescue him
Inspector Lestrade invites Watson to examine a body, so he instructs Holmes “if anyone asks for me Holmes just tell them I'm on a little job for Scotland Yard would you? And just take any messages”. Holmes replies “at your service, my dear doctor”
Holmes is sorting out some financial paperwork and complains to Watson that the banks make an elaborate and complicated affair of finances, when it's just a matter of putting money in and taking it out
Watson: "Well i think it's the taking it out that complicates it for them"
Holmes' young client tells Holmes he thought he'd be "much stronger-looking"
Holmes says "I can tear dictionaries in half! I'd show you if I had a dictionary handy". Thankfully Holmes did not get chance to attempt a demonstration
Stamford and Watson go for a ride on a tandem bicycle and talk about Holmes
(Tandems were first available from 1889, with patents for similar ideas from a few years earlier. Assuming Holmes and Watson met in 1881 in this series, like they are supposed to have in the books, then how is there a tandem already?)
Watson thinks Holmes has turned to crime, but wants to help him so he offers to take him away to France or Switzerland or Spain for a nice long rest. Holmes explains he's been secretly testing the adequacy of security measures for the government and they sort out their misunderstandings.
He tells Watson "come along, Sedgely!" (Watson's alias when he was spying on Holmes)
Inspector Lestrade confusedly asks "Sedgely?" as they walk off
