i actually have no idea if someone already mentioned this but i haven't seen anyone bring it up so heh-
there's this Arthur Conan Doyle online encyclopedia that has a bunch of information on *drumroll* Arthur Conan Doyle, including a solid number of videos of him, his family and pets
i found one w his parrot :D
it also has the full text, illustrations, and, in the case of the novels, book covers from almost, if not all, the sherlock holmes stories
it also has the "unofficial" stories; short stories that referenced holmes, a play based on the mazarin stone, and a story that was basically the first draft with the characters that would become mr. holmes and dr. watson
here their names are hugh lawrence and john h. thurston and their roles are kinda swapped (lawrence is a doctor and thurston is a chemist)
there's also a list of the several hundred actors who've played sherlockian characters w the names of their adaptations and a brief introduction to the actors + a special biography or career overview for those in some of the most memorable adaptations
it also has other characters and short stories from Doyle's non-sherlockian tales which is really neat
this was the one website feeding my obsession w the books before my friend was kind enough to buy me the collected works lol
#so uhm#yeah here yall go :D#sherlock holmes#arthur conan doyle#acd holmes#granada holmes#rathbone holmes#younger me thought this would cure my hyperfixation it did NOT it made it worse#and im all the better for it#mindless rantings

BBC walks up to John, snogs him violently into the wall, all hands on deck. RDJ watches from the corner of his eye, shifting in his seat before getting up to pace with jealous agitation. Granada rolls his eyes with an air of distaste and smokes his pipe while studying a document on the table.
- Sherlock, I’m home-
- Hello, John. - Hello, Watson. - You’re late, dear Watson.

Sooo LEGO will release this in June apparently, it's an ICONS collection piece, a Book Nook that can fold in the middle. It looks exciting, but I just can't figure out the meaning of the fish in the second pic...all the other clues I was able to guess but this? Maybe it's from Shoscombe Old Place, where they plan to catch pike from the Hall lake? But the other ones are more famous and more obvious things so maybe my brain is not braining and it's a major plotpoint in something?
Btw I just love that we have the Reichenbach drawing there and the lamps above the fireplace look a lot like the ones in Granada!

Holmes waking people (watson) up at ungodly hours:
Wakes them up while he's already dressed and ready to go practically giggling and kicking his feet; won't take no for an answer; will linger at the foot of their bed and tickle their foot to force them awake.
Meanwhile Holmes when he gets woken up at an ungodly hour:
"GO AWAY"
#actually wasnt really an ungodly hour man just doesnt like being woken up#sherlock “dont talk to me until i've had my morning cocaine” holmes#granada holmes#holmes and watson#sherlock holmes#jeremy brett

The more I delve into old Sherlock Holmes adaptions the more I wonder if a lot of the design for adapting Edwin to screen (in Dead Boy Detectives specifically) was influenced by the Jeremy Bretts version of Sherlock. Also sometimes lovingly referred to as the Granada Holmes adaption due to the TV company's name.
The outfit. The blazer. The starched collar. The vest.
The flourishes. The detecting around with one hand daintily raised. A partner who damn worships the ground he walks on. He does the same hand thing! Holding the hands together by the pointer finger.
There is one clip that I wish I could gif if I knew how, that has Sherlock twirling with a miffed air that is so Edwin.
(forgive the image quality, he's in the background and I'm taking the screenshots lmao)
At one point Sherlock refers to Watson as "My intimate friend" which. Crazy. But it's giving Edwin introducing Charles to clients once they get together. They're already partners, they're still friends, they're just more.. intimate.
Anyway I'm genuinely wondering if Bretts' version of Sherlock was an influence for Edwin's character later on, or as a source of inspiration as it is, after all, a show about a well-known character who is a detective, set around the Victorian/Edwardian era.
-
Or, as a fun in-canon influence, would Edwin and Charles have watched it? The show ran from 1984-1994, and it actually went through a gap between 1988 and 1991 where there were no episodes released. A gap where two dead boys conveniently were together for at least two of. And they cannot have been solving cases the entire time.
(It originally released on ITV but let's pretend they had access to it somehow) The boys watch a show made in Charles' lifetime but set around Edwin's lifetime (Granada Holmes in particular looks to be set around the 1920s? maybe a bit earlier I'm unsure). On screen is a man in Victorian/Edwardian attire, flouncing about, living his life as a detective. He's easily bored, not good with people, exceedingly clever, and is never demonised for it. He has all of 2 or 3 friends and once you get to know him he's sarcastic and teasing and compliments always.
He's everything Edwin would see himself as being when without judgement, and it takes nothing to turn to Charles, who looks back without judgement, and to ask if maybe, they could both have that for themselves.

My favorite tags on this post so far:

It’s crazy to me that people read Sherlock Holmes’ obsession with Irene Adler as romantic when it is so clearly the same kind of obsession that gay men have for Lady Gaga

I just watched the devil's foot episode of granada holmes and i'm soooo normal about it

(Last time i watched it i could have been around 10 or less. how did my grandma think this was a good idea. no wonder i didn't remember the psychadelic sequence cause i may have been to traumatised because of this. anyways what i remembered quite well is holmes saying "i've never loved and if i've loved a woman..." i (not knowing about homosexuality and queerness extensively at that time) remember thinking "huh. makes sense he never loved a woman, but he sure has loved someone." guess i've been shipping these two even before i knew you could be gay)
