"Do you want a boyfriend/girlfriend?" no i want a best friend/roommate/soulmate that I can go on silly adventures with and hang out with and have deep intellectual discussions with and we can be life partners without any of the romance stuff

i was recently sharing my love for johnlock’s relationship particularly set in the victorian times (but any adaptation works as well) and my friend noted that they seem to have a power imbalance, where watson is typically ‘serving’ holmes in the sense that he would always listen to holmes’ words and obey them to the letter.
i feel as though people tend to misunderstand this little quirk of theirs. it is not that holmes is using watson as his servant, merely is that it is simply how they work: they function similarly to how ying-yang works. they are incredibly different in a multitude of ways but they connect because of those differences. watson is not inferior to holmes because he seems subservient, it is funnily almost the opposite. sherlock is dependent on watson’s romantic, domestic nature, even in a platonic way. watson is the man that ensures that sherlock is not plainly breathing but truly living. he makes sure that when sherlock doesn’t have a case he still lives all the same.
ill use an analogy here, let’s think of batman and his butler alfred. alfred is certainly not inferior to bruce because he is his servant, he is the catalyst that made bruce wayne batman instead of purely a villain. sherlock cannot be the great detective without his watson, the same way bruce is incapable of being batman without his alfred.
it doesn’t matter if you view them as platonic or romantic, or whatever you wish, as long as you understand the simplicity of their complex bond that goes beyond any word capable of boxing their relationship into a singularity, but is simple enough to say that they love each other unconditionally, unequivocally so.
#acd holmes#johnlock#can you tell i just read so much fanfiction set in the victorian times#victorian holmes#this was so much more insightful than i thougjt it would be

this just convinced me to watch soviet holmes THANK YOU

Ill forever love soviet sherlocks' adaptation of watson discovering sherlock is alive
The fainting, the love and worry in sherlock's voice as he tries to wake ms hudson and john back up
John's voice shaky and sad as he cant belive sherlock is really THERE in FRONT OF HIM and then all 3 of them crying while they hug ♡

And obviously also John giggling while sherlock is crying bcs he thinks they should celebrate and be happy but sherlock is SO SENTIMENTAL in that moment lol

hey im not disagreeing. in hindsight the writing is terrible in the later seasons, especially in terms of john’s characterisation. i’m just pointing out plausible reasons for sherlock’s need for therapy that you (may have) missed. im not calling bbc johnlock a thing to be romanticised, john’s behaviour towards sherlock, as you mentioned, was fuckin terrible. but i do believe IN FANON, that can be fixed by millions of therapy. yes they are toxic in canon, but i do believe in doesn’t have to always be the case in fanon.
i feel like the fandom really brushes past the wedding between john and mary and just dismiss it as sherlock pining for john, and, not wrong (i will write a 10 page essay handwritten about how incredibly sherlock is yearning and 8 of them would just focus on the speech) but also we’re missing the key point to the wedding.
sherlock is lonely. he’s so alone because the only person he thinks he has is john, and john is now married to mary and wouldn’t spend as much time with him anymore. he’s so alone and that used to be what protected him but once he had a taste of companionship, being alone turned into being lonely. he looks around the crowd and he finds no one.
that’s a lie, he finds one person. and yet that one person is dancing with his wife to the melody sherlock constructing, dipping her down and kissing her, and sherlock can only watch.

i DO think you’re right. i think you’re right about sherlock not being alone, his dependency on john, his utter fucked up relationship with john in fact. but what i believe you’re missing is sherlock not being alone, but feeling lonely. he doesn’t believe he has anybody but john, not really. that’s what factors into the whole ‘suicidal so john saves him’ thing. he doesn’t even think of the fact that fact that there are other people who would mourn him. his single minded focus on john is destructive for both themselves and the people around them. it isn’t romantic, it’s so fucked up but in a way it’s them.

what breaks my heart is morgan not crying in tony’s funeral — how could she? she’s too young to understand that her father’s not coming back, he’s never coming back. later on, when pepper comes to tuck her to sleep, she asks pepper where her dad is, and pepper just breaks down because how is ahe supposed to explain that to a kid?

that is so sweet thank you so much im gonna go cry now 😭❤️
i love martin freeman’s acting ESPECIALLY in the scene where john finds out sherlock is actually alive?? THE LOOK ON HIS FACE breaks me everytime. if i were to describe it, shock would definitely be the main emotion; but it’s supplemented with raw grief, and the slight tinge of happiness and hope that slowly dissipates into brute, cowardly anger. it holds everything he wants to say but can’t say, so he lashes out in violence as compensation.
honestly his acting is top notch it makes me sooo-
mr “ill do that with a look”

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!!
god knows that mariana +sherlock are definitely gonna have a big fight with john (and they deserve it!! they def shld not have done the mic thing) BUT i really hope it gets resolved within the three gables or at least the next case because i REALLY don’t want john and sherlock/mariana to have this crazy tension like in bbc, don’t make them have even the slightest hatred for each other pls
because john is in a really fragile place right now, and i don’t want john to be like bbc and put it on people who don’t deserve it!

i woukd like to add the entirety of the best man speech.
what's the best, most iconic johnlock quote?
Well I will approach this in two ways. ACD Canon quotes and BBC Sherlock quotes.
ACD Canon :
“It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but that you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it.”
“You have a grand gift for silence, Watson. It makes you quite invaluable as a companion.”
“I know, my dear Watson, that you share my love of all that is bizarre and outside the conventions and humdrum routine of daily life.”
“You’re not hurt, Watson? For God’s sake, say that you are not hurt!“ It was worth a wound – it was worth many wounds – to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain. All my years of humble but single-minded service culminated in that moment of revelation.”
“I have never loved, Watson, but if I did and if the woman I loved had met such an end, I might act even as our lawless lion-hunter has done. Who knows?” – The Devil’s Foot. “By the Lord, it is as well for you. If you had killed Watson, you would not have got out of this room alive. Now, sir, what have you to say for yourself?” – The Three Garridebs.
“The relations between us in those latter days were peculiar. He was a man of habits, narrow and concentrated habits, and I had become one of them…..I was a whetstone for his mind. I stimulated him.”
“I am lost without my Boswell.”
“…If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city…. ”
BBC Sherlock:
“You’ve got a boyfriend then? Which is fine by the way.” “I know it’s fine.”
“I am happy to play the fool. For you.”
“You, it’s always you John Watson. You keep me right.”
“I don’t mind.” “Anytime.”
“I’m glad no one saw that.” “What?” “You, ripping my clothes off in a darkened swimming pool. People might talk.”
“Take my hand.” “Now people will definitely talk.”
“You look sad, when you think he can’t see you.”
“I have a date” “that’s what I was suggesting”
“It(Sherlock Watson) could work.”
“Dinner?” “Starving.”
“You are a great boyfriend. Sherlock Holmes is a very lucky man…Don’t make me compete with Sherlock Holmes.”
“I’m his doctor.” “And only a fool argues with his doctor”
“The stuff you wanted to say but never did. Say it now” “No. I can't”
“There’s something I’ve always wanted to say but never have”
“You being all mysterious with your–cheekbones. And turning your coat collar up so you look cool.”
“I’d be lost without my blogger.”
“I was so alone. And I owe you so much.”
“But look how you care about John Watson. Your damsel in distress.”
There are many. But I have a tendency to forget quotes when someone asks for it. Feel free to add more.
