Eight Elephants | Gerard van Groeningen | 1563 | Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
“In September 1563 there was a male elephant in Antwerp. The artist Gerard van Groeningen seized his chance to draw the animal in various positions. Afterwards he combined his sketches into one etching, so that it looked like eight different elephants in the wild. Rembrandt did the same thing three quarters of a century later: he drew an elephant named Hasken in three positions and combined his sketches in one drawing”

Saint Michael | Master of Belmonte | 1500 | The Cloisters NY
“Armed with a coat of mail, dagger, shield, and lance, the archangel Michael symbolizes the triumph over evil. The demon at his feet is the Antichrist, cast out of heaven. The youthful beauty and sumptuous raiment of Saint Michael in the rich courtly setting combine with the image of the demon to form a stark visual contrast between the strength and splendor of the Church and the monstrousness of evil defeated.”

Venus and Cupid | Lorenzo Lotto | 1520 | MET NY
“Lotto, whose unusual genius makes him one of the most fascinating of all Venetian painters, depicts Venus and her son Cupid in a bower, a subject inspired by ancient marriage poems. He probably painted it to celebrate the wedding of a cultivated couple in Venice or Bergamo, and Venus’s features may be taken from the bride’s. The beautifully observed details relate to the goddess and marriage. The ivy is symbolic of fidelity, the bride wore a myrtle wreath, and Cupid peeing is a lighthearted augury of fertility.”
