What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a type of brain injury that occurs due to a blow to the head or rapid movement of the head and neck.
Common symptoms of a concussion include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, disrupted sleep, neck pain, sensitivity to light or noise, nausea or vomiting, blurred vision, balance issues, mental fog, and feelings of anxiety.
It is important to note that loss of consciousness is not necessary for a concussion to occur. If you experience difficulty recognizing people or places, a worsening headache, memory loss, confusion, repeated vomiting, excessive drowsiness, slowness, or seizures, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
After sustaining a concussion, it is recommended to rest for 24-48 hours before gradually reintroducing activities. Recovery from a concussion typically takes between 1 to 4 weeks, although some individuals may experience long-term issues. It is advisable to consult a concussion specialist for proper assessment and treatment.

Physiotherapy offers effective solutions for dizziness and vertigo. Vertigo, characterized by the sensation of movement or spinning, can be addressed through physiotherapy interventions.
A thorough assessment by a physiotherapist can confirm the presence of vertigo, and specific exercises can be prescribed to alleviate symptoms. Even if vertigo is ruled out, physiotherapy can still help with dizziness symptoms through vestibular training exercises.

Physiotherapy offers a non-medication approach to enhance your health and well-being by emphasizing exercise, hands-on techniques, and education. Physiotherapists empower you to take control of your healing process, whether you're recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or aiming to improve your physical performance.
Extensively trained in the physical rehabilitation of various body systems, physiotherapists work with individuals of all ages across hospitals, private practices, and sports clinics. Their wide-ranging expertise enables them to effectively address an array of conditions, from musculoskeletal issues to neurological disorders.
During a physiotherapy session, your condition will be assessed, and a personalized treatment plan will be developed. Your physiotherapist will guide you through exercises and techniques tailored to promote healing and restore function. Additionally, they will educate you on self-care strategies to manage symptoms and prevent future injuries.
Physiotherapy isn't solely focused on treating existing conditions; it's also highly effective in injury prevention. By analyzing your movement patterns and evaluating your physical readiness, physiotherapists can help you avoid injuries and enhance your performance in sports and daily activities.
By choosing physiotherapy, you're embracing a proactive and holistic approach to your health. With the guidance and expertise of a physiotherapist, you can optimize your physical well-being, regain mobility, and lead a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Why choose Physiotherapy?
Have you ever wondered…what do physiotherapists actually do? And could you actually benefit from seeking treatment from a physiotherapist? Let’s see if we can shed some light on these questions…
Physiotherapy is a unique part of our medical system, where physios aim to improve the health of their clients without medication. This means they use things like exercise, hands on techniques, and education to empower clients to improve their own health. So yes, when you see a physio, you will usually get exercise homework!
In school, all physios are trained in the physical rehabilitation of many body systems, including musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory and neurological systems. Physiotherapists work with people of all ages, from infants to seniors. They can be found in almost all departments of the hospital, from the medical ward and post-surgical care to the ICU and emergency departments. Physiotherapists also work in private practice (like Infinity Physio Centre), treating conditions that do not require hospitalization.
Physiotherapists ranked highest in job satisfaction, according to a 2008 survey conducted by the University of Chicago.  We can take a few guesses as to why!! It is extremely rewarding to walk someone through their rehabilitation journey and see them return to their meaningful life activities. Bodies can also present very interesting “puzzles” for the therapists to solve, which keeps our brains working hard! As a client, it’s comforting to know you are in the care of someone who genuinely enjoys their job.
At a Physiotherapy Appointment
So what actually happens during a physiotherapy session?
Your first appointment is called your initial assessment. Your physio will have you perform a number of movement patterns, strength tests and other special tests in order to form a working physiotherapy diagnosis. They will discuss this diagnosis with you, and present a treatment plan based on their findings and your personal goals.
A physiotherapy treatment plan should include the types of treatment (such as manual/hands on techniques and exercises) as well as the frequency and number of treatments recommended. They will only proceed with this treatment plan if you, the client, are on board and give your consent.
Who benefits from Physiotherapy?
Anyone!
But more seriously, physiotherapists can help with so many different physical conditions. Anyone experiencing physical limitations to a meaningful task in their life will benefit from physiotherapy. Limitations can include things such as:
Pain
Restricted movement
Neurological symptoms (pain/tingling/numbness) or conditions (post stroke/brain injury/spinal cord injury)
Muscle weakness
Vertigo/dizziness/loss of balance
Post concussion syndrome
Incontinence
And many other reasons…
Can physios help with injury prevention?
YES!!
Physiotherapists are highly trained in analyzing movement. They can perform movement and strength screening to determine if you’re physically ready for your sport or job. This can be especially significant when thinking ahead to skiing or biking season! Just like we head to the dentist or doctor for regular checkups, it’s not a bad idea to schedule a regular check up with your physio.
