People sometimes worry that those who talk about emotional (or other forms of) abuse and neglect are holding parents to impossible standards of perfection.

But psychologists don’t talk about “perfect” parenting, because perfect parenting doesn’t exist. Instead, they tend to categorize parenting into two general groups: “good enough” parenting and “not good enough” parenting.

There is a huge spectrum within each category. Just like the “good enough” parents range from “they were okay” to “they were AMAZING”, the “not good enough” parents range from “they genuinely tried” to “this person is a SADIST”.
