India is a very young country with over 65% of the population being below the age of 35 years. We can leverage this fact to get ahead of other countries using the same workforce for the next 35 years. Giving subsidies or incentives to the people won’t solve anything in the longer run. We need to make our population capable enough so that they can provide for themselves.
The demand for skilled workforce in our country has been on the rise but there are not enough people to take up that opportunity. The rural labourers have outdated or very basic skills and are unable to fulfil the current industry requirements. For the same reason, the government has initiated many skill development courses at a minimal cost. The courses are from every domain possible and capable of providing endless possibilities to the people.
Let’s have a brief look at the long list of 221 skill India courses across 34 domains.
Agriculture: Animal Health Worker, Aquaculture Worker, Gardener, Green House Operator, Organic Grower, Tractor Operator, etc.
Green Jobs: Solar PV Installer- Civil, Electrical, Wastewater Treatment Plant Technician, Wastewater Treatment Plant Helper, etc.
Retail: Distributor Salesman, Retail Sales Associate, Retail Trainee Associate
Telecom: Customer Sales Executive, Distributor Sales Rep, Field Sales Executive, Field Sales Executive, Handset Repair Engineer, Optical Fibre Technician, etc.
Apparel, Made ups and Home furnishing: Cutting Supervisor, Export Assistant, Export Executive, Embroidery Machine Operator, Finisher, etc.
IT & ITES: Research Associate, Product Design Engineer Mechanical, Management Trainee Marketing, Junior Software Developer, etc.
The various other domains are leather technology, life science, media and entertainment, mining, sports, rubber, tourism and hospitality, textile and handloom, healthcare, etc. All these courses belong to so many different industries and verticals.
AISECT Org in partnership with National Skill Development Centre (NSDC) offers many of the above-mentioned courses. It is centred in Bhopal and has set up 4 universities for higher education in states like Chhattisgarh, MP, Jharkhand and Bihar who have the potential but not enough resources.
Out of all the skill based initiatives in Bhopal, it is easily the largest and the best one. It has already trained so many people in the remotest locations of the country and has received many awards and accolades for the same. It is associated with many central ministry projects such as Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, National Urban Livelihood Mission, Corporate Social Responsibility Projects etc. and also runs some campaigns such as Rozgar Mela and Kaushal Vikas.
Rojgar Mantra is one such initiative of AISECT Org through which it is planning to fill the gap between demand and supply in the labour market. It gives a platform for the workforce and industry to meet and help each other out.
Apart from all the skill training, our education system needs to reinvent itself and include some workshops and courses in the curriculum that makes students industry ready and bring expertise with themselves on the table. Following this path, India will be able to prepare more than 500 million skilled workforces at par with global standards and help to boost the country’s economy.

All these facts and figures clearly explain the importance of skill development training in our country. We are all set to become the youngest nation of the world by 2020 with an average age of 29, but we might not be able to use this to our advantage and skill development gap will act as the biggest hurdle in our way. In the present era, it has become very important to include skills within our educational curriculum so that the youth becomes industry ready. This will also give employers an incentive to hire such individuals.

Skill development in India
The youth literacy rate in India is 86.1%. Not everyone gets a chance to go for higher education and get good jobs. India has only 4.69% workforce that is formally skilled & it is a very alarming situation for the country. We are estimating to create 50 to 70 million employment opportunities in our country and those would require some kind of vocational training. Do we have the right kind of workforce to take up those jobs?
All these facts and figures clearly explain the importance of skill development training in our country. We are all set to become the youngest nation of the world by 2020 with an average age of 29, but we might not be able to use this to our advantage and skill development gap will act as the biggest hurdle in our way. In the present era, it has become very important to include skills within our educational curriculum so that the youth becomes industry ready. This will also give employers an incentive to hire such individuals.
Skill training will help students to be employable in the following ways:
They will have vast job opportunities ahead.
Learning skills indirectly teaches soft skills and confidence as well gives an edge to the student’s personality.
Students who don’t like studying or drop out of schools/colleges for various reasons will be able to see the importance of earning a livelihood and get a career boost.
Talent is getting wasted in the country and it can be nurtured through this initiative.
Our workforce will be skilled making us a competitive economy.
Skill development will empower the employees to ask for higher incomes, work under better labour conditions, have a secure job with access to better facilities. People in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities lose out on good employment opportunities due to the lack of exposure and distance they have from big industries. National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is a government organization which provides licenses and grants to institutes to offer skill development courses. One such institute, centred in a Tier 2 city, Bhopal, is AISECT Org.
Through its 12 vocational training centres offering 150 high-quality undergraduates, postgraduate, certificate and diploma courses at low costs, it aims to skill 13 lakh youth by 2020. Its reach is spread out to remote corners of the country and has also set up 4 institutes of higher learning in states like MP, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand that has the potential but not the resources for a higher education ecosystem. Its schemes cover a huge list of services under various Government programs such as PMJDY, MUDRA Yojana, Skill India, and so many more. It is also providing skill training programs in higher secondary schools to reach out to the maximum number of students.
A collaborative effort of the employees and employers is required to bridge the huge gap between skills and jobs. Skill development training institutes such as above engaged in enhancing the skills and promoting entrepreneurship are huge assets for the country. Their mission is to convert youth of the country from a liability to an asset. They help carve out a clear way out of the chaotic situation.
