Dear Leelah,

It’s been three years since you left us. It shook me then. It shakes me even more now. The community saw you, we grieved for you, and we still grieve for you. Your death has left us raw. There have been others, before and since, and we have grieved for them too. We will never stop grieving for you, or for them.

These times are hard. We have a president now who wants to keep our trans family out of the military, and a vice president who wants to make the therapy that took you from us mandatory for all queer youth. There are hate crimes every day. But we’re fighting them. We’re working our asses off to fix society, just like you asked us to. Things are getting better, little by little. We’re not gonna let them stomp us out. And we’re not gonna let them ignore us. Don’t you worry.

We all loved you, and we all try to love each other, despite everything in the world trying to keep us from doing so. I was going through a lot when you left, I was just starting to come out, and it hit me really hard even though I never got the pleasure of meeting you. You were a light to those who got to, you were beautiful and talented, and the world is a duller place without you in it. But we’re going to honor your wishes, Leelah. We’re going to fix society, no matter what. Your wish will not die with you.

We remember you, Leelah. And we love you still. Rest in power.
