A Look into New English/Nou Anglish and it's history - Apocalypse

After Ilka's teachings had led the androids and technology left behind after the first extinction of humanity to end their wars and discover the "Human Key" (A term to sum up what makes humans human, on both a psychological, philosophical and psychical level), the creation of the first human was made following the uncovering of the human genome. Preparations were quickly put in place to begin bringing on the first "wave" of society. The new language of this society - Nou Anglish, or New English - was chosen to be based off of English for it's popularity and reputation as a global language. Though the androids had begun to quickly get to work in learning English for themselves, androids, being beings composed of steady patterns and orders, found the numerous inconsistencies in it's vocabulary and grammar to be greatly difficult. A linguistics department was created to do further research into English, and following the tracing of it's roots back to Old English and the Anglish project, a new plan was developed: Create a new variant of English that would be consistent and easily learnable for both human and androidkind. Nou Anglish was based primarily off of Old English, with bits of Anglish scattered about for words that were nonexistent to the prior. Over the years, and especially following the Decommission, Nou Anglish became more and more simplified and lax in it's pronunciations, resulting in it's current form at the time of Apocalypse. Barnabas' favourite NA word is "þeðken" (Thethken) - A word taught to him by Colin shortly after he joined the team as Ilka. "Þeðken" is a new word particular to Nou Anglish meaning roughly along the lines of "The realisation that at the time you exist, someone you've never met or is out of your sight, near or far, is currently existing and living their own life as well - In all manners of sight, feel, taste, etc. etc.". Barnabas commonly used it as a sign-off to Colin in their letters to each other.

The Monstrous Bride “Just as the ultimate goal of Arthurian quest finally defines itself as the Holy Grail, the object that can never be assimilated into the real world, so the ultimate woman of romance is a fairy mistress, or fairy queen.” — Helen Cooper The monstrous bride is not necessarily monstrous, but she is, by definition, inhuman, which is part of her je ne sais quoi. Her happiness often depends on whether her groom knows her inhuman. If he does not, he is bound to find out before the story concludes, at which point he will either be repulsed by his wife's deceit and leave her, or attempt to make the relationship work, but fail, because he is operating under a misinterpretation of her nature. If he is aware of her inhuman identity, it will often be one of the factors leading to his attraction to her, and he will be rewarded with her love – but often at the cost of abandoning his previous life completely.

He can only end the story happy if he either refuses to indulge his temptation or leaves this world – either for heaven or the fairy realm.

The Scrappy Hero A farmer with a dirty face who gains half the kingdom and the princesses' hand in marriage. Most likely the youngest son of three, distinguished not by opportunity, but by either his wits, or his kindness towards all he encounters, from royals to honeybees, which causes him to garner favours and praise.

A flutter of lashes, a flirtatious wave of her fan. That dashing devil Henry caught Irene’s eye and despite the rings covering each of her other fingers, there was no marriage band in sight, nor a ring of engagement. Eyes would peek at him from above the fan she now opened, telling whispers of potential kisses and caresses beneath her skirts behind closed doors. But would he take the bait?

Oh, absolutely not.

The one thing that attempt had brought Irene in return was a momentary frown, and the faintest glance of discomfort cast over his shoulder before he went and pretended to go about as if he had never seen her to begin with.

Even though he had tried to do away with the unpleasant expression on his face and return it to the polite smile that came expected of the personal butler to the heir of the Mandalay dukedom, Henry couldn't help but sigh to himself in both disgust and pity at that brief transpiring. Had the women of the court all gone mad? Even if the Queen of Bellows was certainly no spring bloom herself as far as he was aware, it had to have been pure insanity for her to set her sights on a simple servant just trying to do his job proper.

And who better to notice his ill-content but his closest co-worker, Empathy? Quick she was to catch the faint grimace in his smile, though the young boy in the wheelchair below her was not. Had it not been for Barnabas sitting right between the two, she would have asked him what had been on his mind then and there, but instead she could only give him a quiet nod and concerned glance to tell her later.

"Henry~!" Barnabas brightened as soon as he saw him approach, his gloved hands clapping together in childish joy. "Oh, where have you been, you? Empathy was about to send me to bed without you, dear Henry...! And you know I could never have that, not ever!"

"Most certainly not, your grace," He went along, feeling his smile ease into something a bit more natural. Henry cast a brief bow to Barnabas, stepping forward to grab hold of the back of his wheelchair in Empathy's place and send a wave off towards her. "I shall be preparing his grace for bed tonight. Empathy, please stay to check in on our guests a moment longer. I fear their appetites should get the best of them if not attended to soon... How bothersome."

"Hm? Henry, wait-! Empathyyyy!!!" A disappointed whine of protest from Barnabas was muffled away by the crowd of guests as he began to wheel him away, and Empathy could do little more than nod and send a final bow off to her young master as he slipped and vanished away... Eventually he settled down, still somewhat huffy, yet his talk to Henry about one particularly elegant looking woman in a dress he saw entering prior to an hour ago had considerably boosted his spirits in their walk down the hall

...Empathy, meanwhile, was stumped.

What could have possibly happened to him that was so horrible it brought his patience to that?

She supposed she would just have to ask and find out later.

"Oh what a darling little boy~!" Willow would gently wrap her arms around Barnabas, giving him a sweet hug. "Have you been a good boy and keeping up on your prayers? Here, I have a bit a piece of chocolate for you for being such an agreeable young boy"

~Barnabas "Oho~!" A joyous squeal of delight as those gentle arms wrapped themselves around him, Barnabas' own just barely finding themselves awkwardly trying to return the hug from his wheelchair, Bible in hand, for just a moment before his hands drew back to his chest. His eyes were averted down to his lap, and his cheeks dusted a light pink. Green eyes brightened only further at the promise of chocolate and the praise that came with it, the young heir all too eager to nod along with a bright "Mhm!" in answer. "Oh, yes, I have! I do all my morning and midday prayers, and I do them before I go to bed with Henry and Empathy as well! I pray for my mother, father, the servants, my betrothed, and everyone! ...Even Edwin, though he isn't too fond of it." He couldn't keep his laughter from peeping through at the last little comment, Barnabas tenderly removing his gloves and placing them on his lap with his Bible to receive the delicious treat! Another high-pitched, this time muffled, squeak of delight as soon as the first modest nibble was taken from that chocolate. Well enough did Barnabas know that gluttony was the last thing anything should be devoured with so much as modesty and humbleness, yet.... A pale, now-ungloved hand lifted to his blushing cheek in flustered joy, and Barnabas was even unable to help but squirm restlessly in his seat with the excitement that came with all this coddling and affection. "Oh, thank you! Thank you!" Barnabas gushed, his hands clasping together. Just as quickly did they part to grasp onto Willow's; had anyone else have been watching they would have sworn they saw the stars sparkling in his eyes that moment. "Will you be staying for long?" He asked, leaning forward in his chair. Though she was a sweet little thing, he had never seen her before! And if she was new... The young heir always did enjoy the prospect of making a friend. Especially ones with treats and praise at their disposal!
