"You look beautiful." Jonathan replies, but he lowers the camera all the same. So far the only shots he'd managed to get of her in the last 5 months had been when she wasn't looking. As soon as she started to show she kept telling him she was too messy or fat to have a picture taken. He disagreed on both counts, she was gorgeous and he wanted to remember her like this, belly swollen and skin glowing as she carried their child. "Besides, you're due in like a week Nance, I want to get a few good shots, you'll want them after she's born."

Okay but can we talk for a second about how tired Jonathan is. Like he goes to highschool, takes care of his brother, and works to support the family. The guy is tired, no wonder he’s always so grumpy and he’s probably prone to falling asleep in class on occasion too.

I love how Jonathan is about ot just walk away even after all the shit steve is saying about nancy and about him, but then Steve makes the mistake of insulting the rest of his family and that's when he’s had enough. Jonathan will not defend himself, but dammit he’s going to beat the ever loving shit out of anyone who insults his mom and brother.

That hour and a half, waiting to hear back from Jonathan honestly felt more like an eternity. That was an exaggeration, but it hadn’t been fun, had been quite the opposite actually. Filled with stress and anxiety, which was only made worse when her parents showed up, and Nancy had had to fumble for some sort of excuse about why she looked paler than usual and why she was lingering around the phone. 

She hadn’t exactly come up with a good excuse for why she was so stressed, but as for the phone call, she caved and told them that Jonathan was heading down to visit – she just neglected to explain to them why. 

The phone rang, and she practically bolted for the phone, earning a sort of suspicious look from Mike and a curious one from Holly. Her mom looked surprised too, but her dad… He was asleep in his chair, snoring.  “ Hey! “  Her voice was jittery, and her mom seemed to pick up on it, so she simply offered a weak smile and then turned to face the phone on the wall, as if that would stop her mom from being able to see her. 

“ Did you manage to get it figured out? “  She asked, fingers anxiously twirling the phone cord around themselves. She’d have to be careful with what she said, especially now that everyone else was home. 

Jonathan shoos his mom away from where she’s anxiously watching him and the phone. He doesn’t really have anything else to keep from her, but he doesn’t want her breathing down his neck when he’s talking to Nancy either. He’s relieved when it’s her who picks up the phone, there’s no way he could’ve sounded casual for Mr or Mrs. Wheeler - or even Mike - at this point. 

“Yeah, yeah,” He says quickly. “I - I can’t uh - i can’t talk for long i have to leave for the airport but my flight gets in at like midnight.” He says, glancing at the piece of paper in his hand “Sorry, 12:45 am, i uh - it’s late I know but - but it’s the first flight I could get, look if you can meet me - tell your mom you’re sleeping over at -” He faulters, he doesn’t know any of her friends names. “at Robin’s or something and we can get - there’s this cheap motel by the airport. It’s a little seedy but - but we can stay there and - and it’s right near the planned parenthood too so we can go in the morning.” 

He’s not going to tell her how he knows all of this. That he’d ridden in Lonnie’s car driving that route a hundred times, past the planned parenthood, to that motel where he sat in the car and Lonnie and some woman Jonathan didn’t know went inside. Jonathan would wait, and few hours later Lonnie would come out and they’d go home and Lonnie would tell his mom they’d been at a baseball game, and Jonathan wouldn’t say anything because he knew what would happen if he did. He squeezes his eyes shut, willing the memory away so he can focus. 

“Is - is that okay? If - if it’s not I can figure something else out -maybe get a - a bus to Hawkins and meet you there and we can drive to the clinic tomorrow?”

“Yeah I guess.” Jonathan shrugs, that had never really been the case in his experience even if it should be. Lonnie sure had tried everything to squash the ‘pansy’ hobbies, as Lonnie put it, out of him. Lonnie would’ve been worse to will if he’d still been around as Will got older, Jonathan was sure of that much. He shakes his head to clear it and looks back at Bob, he’s so prepared, so enthusiastic, so happy. It was super dorky, but his mom was happy, and besides it wasn’t like it was threatening or anything. “You did?” The fact that Bob had put this much thought into this meant it was important to him, and that it was something he wanted to share. It was new to Jonathan, but he’d give it a shot. “Should we - should we get started?”

I hate how guilty Jonathan is for not being home that night Will went missing because he took the shift to help his family but in doing so he almost got his brother killed. He’s sixteen years old and already got the weight of a family on him and it isn’t fair but once that weight is gone he doens’t know what to do with himself either.

I saw a tiktok that said Jonathan and Nancy’s problems communicating are probably because neither one of them knows what a loving relationship is supposed to look like and it’s lived rent free in my head since.

               oh,   so   THAT’S   what   it   is.      playing   the   BABYSITTING   role.      well,   steve   has   definitely   grown   accustomed   to   that   title.      BABYSITTER.      actually   he   was   pretty   good   at   it,   and   though   he   complained   about   it,   he   actually   liked   hanging   out   with   those   little   shits.      but   that’s   a   fact   he’ll   keep   to   himself.      can’t   let   them   know   he   likes   them   TOO   much,   right?      he   has   to   maintain   that   COOL   GUY   persona.      though   it’s   pretty   obvious   his   popularity   had   sort   of   tanked   after   hargrove’s   arrival   to   town   last   year…

Jonathan wasn’t sure if that was something Steve would go for. Sure he’d spent a lot of time with Dustin and a few of the other kids, but hanging out with him and Nancy and following all the other kids around was something else. It was something Jonathan was used to, he’d essentially been the other parent since Lonnie left, but he didn’t expect others to like it. The fact that Nancy went along with it as often as she did still surprised him.

“Yeah uh, WIll did make us promise to stay back a bit and I’m pretty sure MIke will throw a hot dog if -” He falters slightly, he almost said ‘i’m pretty sure mike will throw a hot dog if i kiss his sister’ but he stops. “if we embarrass them too much.” He decides on. “Yeah I uh - I think we can keep the kids in an ice cream shop for like ten minutes while we wait.”
