His real name is Ivum! Red is the father to Zim and Tenn. He doesn’t hate Zim either. He has the ancient gene that Zim and Tenn have! Red uses cloaking tech to hide it.

His father is Spork. The two have a very strained relationship.

Red was Miyuki’s partner before she passed. He raised their smeets alone. He was joined to rule by Purple. Despite irkens mating for life, it’s very rare that they find another when theirs dies. In the case of Red, he found comfort in Purple’s presence since he was involved in his and Miyuki’s life from smeethood.

Red and Purple cloned a smeet of their own named Illuk, but they call her Lucky. She’s Zim and Tenn’s half-sister.

Red’s more calm and logical. He handles the irken military and any threats that come with it. He became closed off after Miyuki’s passing, making it harder for him to connect to his subjects, so handling things that don’t involve too much emotion is better suited for him. He’s also more experienced with the militaristic side of the empire unlike Purple.

Red was an elite solider in his youth. The top of his class and leader of his troop. Just as Spork shaped him to be.

Red can be described as distant and cold. Part of this is due to his upbringing and the loss of Miyuki. He has trouble connecting with others —he even had trouble with Zim with how much he reminded him of Miyuki. As a smeet, he was taught emotions were weakness and to bury them. That emotions clouded rational thinking and being logical is the only way to rule.

Purple, being the more emotional one, has been trying to help Red connect with his emotions more and express them. A huge breakthrough was when Red reunited with Zim after losing contact for a few months when Zim and Ryder crashed on Orbita. Usually reunions are solemn with little to no words between irkens, just as it was with Red and Spork, but it was heartfelt and huge weight lifted off him when Red learned his son was ok. It was probably the first time he cried since Miyuki’s passing.

He ain’t much of a conversationalist either, but he does listen and remembers a lot of details you might forget.

i love tiny intentional details that subtly build lore. like how ZIM is depicted marching with a militaristic goose step even in his own home sometimes. like it just makes sense— the irken empire is literally an expansionist regime that places great importance on a militaristic domination and conquest. and ZIM is fully committed to serving the goals of his leaders and furthering violent irken imperialism. i just love small details like this in animation — they add so much interesting characterization and world building.
