She was so busy working to put him under her thrall that she failed to consider what success would feel like.

He dropped to his knees before her with all the quickness and vacancy of a disabled machine. Tak was fond of machines… Programming made much more sense to her than any kind of conversation.

Their relationship up to this point had been artifice; a delicate maneuver wherein she offered nothing and he gave everything. He didn't really know her… but she knew him better than anyone on the planet. He trusted her.

And now, with all that work finally done, the true nature of their relationship could reveal itself.

But when she looked down at him, her sense of victory was overshadowed by something else… He was perfect like this. She didn't want to leave this moment…

Ah, thanks!! Its a natural feature, actually! Part of his respiratory system.

Here's a little diagram (and some explanations below the cut.)

Spiracles

The symmetrical breathe-y holes connected directly to the irken respiratory system and mouth through the tymbal. There are three on each side, located around where the lower ribs/coastal margin would be on a human.

Tymbal

A specialized sound making organ/resonating chamber located in the center of the chest, capable of producing a wide range of sounds. It is only visible from the outside as a little "plate" embedded over the sternum area. The visible portion varies only slightly between individuals. It vibrates when in use and can even be seen thrumming in some cases.

Additional Notes:

The modern irken is deisgned to be much more neotenic and therefore has a small tymbal with unrefined chambers that are meant only to be capable of the most simple chirps. It can make a few noises, though all are systemically discouraged. As the tymbal becomes less responsive and atrophies with disuse, stillness of the tymbal may sometimes be regarded as a sign of maturity.

nah it's my oc Pilk! his ref isn't done but here's a peek at his pretty face:

he does indeed never get a break; but he prefers his current assignment--drink server in a lounge aboard the massive that his tallest rarely visit (because they don't understand the point of going to the drinks instead of having the drinks brought to them)--over his previous one by miles. that job being Only Irken Table in a planet jacker controlled exotic club. he wanted to be an Elite.
