Bless The Broken Road - 34
Tuesday, July 10th.
It seemed like the team would be fortunate enough to just be working on paperwork all day when Garcia called them into the briefing room for a new case around one in the afternoon.
Jane looked over at Spencer, a frown on her face. Today they were supposed to get off early so they could go to a doctor’s appointment that would tell them the gender of the baby.
After the briefing, Spencer turned to her as they walked back to the bull pen and said, “I’ll call the doctor and get the appointment rescheduled.”
“Don’t,” Hotch said, interrupting. “Since the case is local, you can leave to go to the appointment and then come back when you’re done.”
Jane smiled, relieved. She hated when cases interfered with things like this. “Thank you, Aaron,” she told him.
“You know what you should do?” Garcia cut in, coming over to join them as Hotch headed away to his office. “You should have a gender reveal party! I could plan it for you!”
“Pen, you can’t keep a secret. How are you going to plan a gender reveal party without revealing the gender too early?” Jane pointed out. She looked around and noticed Morgan and JJ were now listening to their conversation as well.
“I can too keep a secret!” Garcia insisted. “I haven’t told anyone how you and Emily kissed at your bachelorette party!”
“You what?!” Morgan spoke up from a little ways away.
Jane rolled her eyes and groaned. “Thanks.” She began to head to her desk to grab her purse and such to head to the appointment.
“Wait, Jane!” Garcia called after her, following behind her. “I’m sorry! Pleaseeeee!”
Jane sighed and turned to face her. “Fine. You can plan it.” She paused and looked to JJ. “But JJ has to help you and only JJ can know the gender until the reveal.”
JJ nodded, agreeing to help out.
“OK. That’s fair,” Garcia agreed. “Yay! I’m so excited!”
When Jane and Spencer returned to the team after the appointment, they handed JJ an envelope with the baby’s gender enclosed in it.
~~~
Friday, July 13th.
Jane and Spencer invited the team and Jack over for a backyard gender reveal party.
JJ had filled a piñata like ball with confetti and tied it to a branch of the tree in the yard. After eating a nice dinner, the team gathered around for the big reveal.
“Ready?” Jane asked Spencer.
“Ready!”
Together, they pulled on a string that opened up the bottom of the ball, dropping pink confetti all over them.
“It’s a girl!” they all cheered, laughing with excitement.
Spencer embraced Jane and kissed her head. They were going to have a daughter.
As the excitement calmed down a little, they got everyone’s attention again.
“We’ve decided we’d take the opportunity tonight to also tell you something else as well,” Jane told everyone.
They all remained silent so Spencer continued. “We’ve come to a decision on who we want to be our baby’s - our daughter’s,” he added with a grin, “godparents. If you are up for it, we’d love to have you, Morgan, be her godfather and you, JJ, be her godmother,” he shared.
“Of course!” Morgan grinned.
“I’d be honored,” JJ agreed.
They stepped forward and hugged the happy couple.
In four months, they’d have a beautiful baby girl.
~~~~~
Although the doctor told her she was allowed to fly for another 10 weeks or so, Jane decided she’d start working cases from the BAU with Garcia for the remainder of her pregnancy.
Wednesday, July 18th.
It was an office day. They were all working on paperwork when they heard Jane gasp. Spencer immediately moved to her side, concerned.
“What’s wrong, Janey?” he asked.
“Nothing, but I think I just felt the baby kick!” She gasped again. “Yep. She definitely kicked just now. Feel it, Spence!” Spencer hesitated. “What?” she questioned.
“When I was pregnant with Henry, he got freaked out by the feeling of him kicking in my stomach,” JJ explained, joining the couple at Jane’s desk.
“Oh come on,” Jane insisted. “Spence, this is your daughter in here. You don’t want to miss this.”
Spencer reluctantly placed a hand on Jane’s belly. “I don’t feel anything,” he stated.
“Talk to her,” Jane suggested.
He looked around at the others’ eyes on him before clearing his throat and leaning in closer. “Hi, sweet girl. This is your daddy speaking.” He jumped back as he felt the baby kick. “Woah!” Slowly, he put his hand back on her belly and felt her kick again.
“What do you think?” Jane asked.
“This is amazing!” he grinned.
~~~~~
By the middle of September, Jane began to stay home from work. She was still about a month and half out from her due date, but couldn’t handle going to work anymore.
Her ankles were swollen, her back ached, and her breasts were sore.
When her birthday came around, she and Spencer spent it resting at home. Still, he tried to pamper her in anyway he could, still wanting to make her feel special on her day.
~~~~~
At the end of October, Spencer approached Hotch, asking to talk to him about something.
They sat down in his office and he spoke, “If you’re alright with it, I want to be able to work cases from here until the baby comes. I don’t want to risk missing the birth of my daughter.”
“Of course,” Hotch agreed. “We can make that work.”
“I was also wondering if I could get a few weeks off after she arrives. I don’t want Jane to be left alone to care for a newborn. We should both be there.”
Hotch nodded. “Absolutely. Permission granted.
“Thank you so much, Hotch,” Spencer told him.
“Do you have a plan for coming back to work after the few weeks off?” the unit chief questioned.
“Yes, I wanted to talk to you about that as well. Jane and I have thought about it and have come up with a plan. We’ve found a daycare so we can both work during the day and decided, if it’s alright with you, that we can take turns going with the team on cases while the other works from here with Garcia. That way we can always have one of us able to come home each night.”
“That sounds like an excellent solution. We can definitely accommodate for that.”
“Great! Thank you, again, so much!” Spencer cheered.
~~~~~
Friday, November 9th.
“Spence? Spencer, wake up!” Jane spoke, shaking her husband awake.
“What? What is it?” he asked.
“I think my water just broke,” she told him.
“You’re serious?”
“Yeah, of course I’m serious!”
Spencer jumped out of bed and into action. “Alright, let me gather our hospital bag and call the doctor to let her know we’re on our way.”
They were ready and out the door within minutes. Spencer helped Jane into the passenger seat before rushing to the driver’s side.
“We’re having a baby,” he stated, a bit dazed.
“Yes, we are, honey. Now drive me to the hospital please,” Jane told him.
“Right, sorry!”
They headed off.
~
Jane was in labor for most of the day. Spencer called Hotch to alert the team that Jane was having the baby. He also called Jane’s parents and Jack to notify them as well.
At 3:14pm, the baby was finally born.
They cleaned her off and wrapped her in a blanket before giving her to Jane to hold. Spencer stood at her shoulder, looking down at their beautiful little bundle of joy.
“Hi there, sweetheart,” Jane whispered to her daughter.
A little while later, the team and Jack arrived at the hospital. Jane’s parents wouldn’t be coming until the next day. They were directed back to their room, filing in single file and forming a circle around the bed.
“Hi, everyone,” Jane greeted them.
“She’s so beautiful,” Garcia gushed.
“Just like her mother,” Morgan said with a wink.
Everyone chuckled.
“Everyone,” Spencer spoke from Jane’s side, “We’d like you to meet Amelia Jane Reid.”
A few of them let out “aww”s at the name.
“Jane? Can I hold her?” Jack asked.
“Of course!” she agreed. “Amelia, this is your Uncle Jack,” she said, handing her over to him.
“Hi, sweetie,” he cooed.
After a while, Garcia spoke up. “Alright, my turn, my turn,” she insisted. Jack laughed and passed her over to her.
Everyone took turns getting to hold Amelia, introducing themselves to the infant.
“You did good, kid,” Morgan told Spencer as he held his goddaughter.
Spencer grinned.
After they all visited for a while, they decided to head home and let the new parents and baby get some rest.
The next day, Jane’s parents came to the hospital to meet their granddaughter.
In the afternoon, they were released from the hospital and allowed to take their daughter home.
As they stepped inside the door, they looked down at their little girl and smiled.
“Welcome to your first home, Amelia.”
Bless The Broken Road - 33
Valentine’s Day
“You almost ready?” Spencer called down the hall to Jane.
“Yeah, just getting my shoes on!” she yelled back from the bedroom. A few seconds later, she walked out into the living room. “Ready,” she told him.
“You look beautiful,” he told her, wrapped his arms around her waist.
“Thank you.” Jane smiled and looked him over. “You look hot yourself.”
A blush covered his cheeks and she reached up to kiss him. Before it could go any farther, she broke away and went to grab her purse and keys from the hook by the door.
“We should get going. We don’t want to keep Will and JJ waiting,” Jane chuckled.
Spencer agreed and they headed out.
The couple was meeting Will and JJ for a Valentine’s Day dinner double date. The four enjoyed a lovely night of fun and conversation.
When they arrived home, Spencer started kissing Jane, moving his hands to the straps of her dress.
She gently pushed his hands away and broke the kiss, deciding not to go any farther for the night. Instead, the couple chose to change into pj’s and cuddle on the couch with Shortstack while watching a movie.
~
A few days later, February 16th, it was a paperwork day at work.
Throughout the day, Jane found ways to tease Spencer. She’d actually wanted to do stuff on Valentine’s Day but decided against it. It had been weeks since they last slept together and she was missing the feel of his body on hers.
When they arrived home, they wasted no time, moving quickly to the bedroom. Her teasing had worked. The pair began making out, hungry for each other’s touch.
~~~~~
Wednesday, March 14th.
Jane stared at the pregnancy test in her hand. It read positive, but she refused to let herself feel happy about it yet. She needed confirmation from a doctor to really believe that the test was right this time. Jane stuck the test deep into the trash can, covering it with some other trash so that Spencer wouldn’t see it.
During lunch, Jane went to the doctor alone. This time the doctor had good news.
She really was pregnant.
Jane smiled to herself as she drove back to work. Along the way, she brainstormed a way to tell Spencer the good news.
Everyone was almost ready to go home for the day when a case came in at the last minute.
The team was briefed before flying to Illinois. Upon landing, Jane and Morgan were sent to the crime scene, an alleyway.
“There’s not much blood here. It’s likely this was merely the dumpsite and not where the UNSUB killed him,” Jane observed.
Morgan was about to respond when a shot rang out from the end of the alleyway. They both jumped behind a dumpster and pulled out their own guns, firing back.
There were two guys shooting at them. Jane managed to hit one in the leg, knocking him down to the ground. When his partner got shot, the other took off. Morgan ran after him while Jane went to handcuff the other and called for an ambulance. A few minutes later, Morgan returned, guiding the other shooter in handcuffs back to the alley.
Local police and EMTs arrived to take care of the two men. As the men were being treated for their injuries, Jane noticed they shared the same tattoo on their necks.
Morgan and Jane headed back to the police station, letting the local police take care of getting the two to the station for interrogations once the EMTs were done treating them.
As soon as they arrived, Spencer embraced Jane.
“I’m fine,” she assured him, speaking into his shoulder. When he let go, she scanned the room and located the deputy sheriff.
“Would’ve been nice of you to mention we were going into a gang’s territory,” she yelled at him. “You failed to mention that. Did it ever occur to you that they might have something to do with these murders?”
“Addison,” Hotch warned.
“You could’ve gotten us killed today!”
“Addison, outside!” Hotch demanded.
Jane sighed and reluctantly obliged to the unit chief’s order.
“He should’ve told us the crime scene was in a gang’s territory!” she argued as soon as they were alone.
“Yes he should’ve, but you yelling at him about it isn’t going to do us any good right now,” he pointed out.
Jane sighed then nodded. “I know, I know. I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me,” she apologized. She ran a hand over her stomach. “I’ll find time to apoligize to him later, if you want me to,” she offered.
“You do what you feel is right,” he told her. “Now let’s get back to the case.”
~
The rest of the case, Hotch only assigned her roles that kept her in the police station. Jane suspected that he somehow knew she was pregnant.
One day, JJ found Jane in the bathroom, kneeling beside a toilet.
“Jane, are you alright?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Jane told her, getting up and moving to the sink to wash her hands.
“Are you sure?”
Jane turned to her. “Spence doesn’t know yet, but I’m pregnant,” Jane shared with her.
“Oh my god! That’s so exciting! Congratulations!” JJ cheered, stepping forward to give her a hug.
“I think Hotch knows too somehow,” Jane chuckled. “Ever since I lashed out at the deputy sheriff he’s been giving me jobs that keep me here. But please don’t tell anyone else yet. Spencer really should’ve been the first to know. I was going to tell him the day this case came up, but now I’m waiting until we get home,” she explained.
“Your secret is safe with me,” JJ assured her.
~~~
They’d located the UNSUB and were about to head out to the address Garcia had given them.
Before she could follow the others, Hotch pulled her aside. “I think you should stay behind, Addison,” he told her.
“What? No. Hotch, please let me go with. I’ll stay in the back,” Jane pleaded.
Hotch sighed. “Fine, but be careful.”
“Thank you,” she told him before following him outside to meet with everyone else.
They managed to apprehend the UNSUB with no casualties. Afterwards, they headed to the jet to fly home.
~
Sunday, March 18th.
Jane leaned against the kitchen countertop, scrolling on her laptop.
Spencer walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.
“What are you looking at?” he asked her.
Jane smiled at his touch and glanced at him over her shoulder. “Just browsing houses. Seeing if there’s any nice one’s in our budget.”
“What’s wrong with our apartment?” he asked.
“Nothing. I just thought it’s time to own property rather than spend money on rent each month,” she explained. She paused for a moment before adding, “And with our growing family, we’re going to need more space.”
She turned around to face him, gauging his reaction to her words.
“Wait, growing family?” he asked, his brow furrowing.
“Mhmm,” she grinned. “I’m pregnant,” she finally spilled.
“Oh my god! That’s amazing!” he cheered, his eyes going wide in excitement. He picked her up and spun her around in happiness then set her back down and kissed her.
“How long?” he asked when he broke the kiss.
“I’ve known since the first day of the last case. I was going to tell you but the case got in the way,” she explained. “JJ and Hotch already know. JJ walked in on me in the bathroom when I was throwing up from morning sickness and I’m pretty sure Hotch figured it out for himself. But I can’t wait to tell everyone else!”
~
The next day was a paperwork day. At one point in the afternoon, Jane walked over to Spencer’s desk to speak with him.
“So when do you think we should tell them?” she asked him in a hushed tone.
“Tell us what?” Garcia questioned, somehow managing to hear her despite her effort to keep her voice quiet. “You have news? How exciting! Please share!”
Jane saw JJ and Morgan look up from their desks upon hearing Garcia.
Spencer chuckled. “I guess right now would work.”
“I’ll go ask Rossi and Hotch to come here,” Jane said.
Once the team was all gathered, Jane wrapped an arm around Spencer and said, “We just wanted you all to know that we’re gonna have a baby!” she cheered, placing her free hand on her stomach. “I’m pregnant!”
Everyone broke out in cheers and words of congratulations, each taking turns stepping forward to hug the happy couple.
As Hotch took his turn to hug Jane, she asked, “You already knew, didn’t you?”
“I had a hunch,” he admitted.
~~~
Saturday, March 31st.
Jane sat back on her heels and flushed the toilet yet again. She’d been sick all day with morning sickness. Up until this point, it had been pretty mild. Today, however, it was terrible.
Convinced she was finished throwing up for now, she exited the bathroom and headed back out to the living room where Spencer was sitting on the couch. She crawled into his lap, tears falling onto her cheeks.
“Why is it so bad?” she cried.
“I’m sorry, Janey,” he comforted her, rubbing her back.
Over the next few weeks, the morning sickness finally came to an end.
~~~~~
May.
Spencer helped Jane zip up her dress and put her necklace on before turning her around and giving her a small peck on the lips.
“You look beautiful,” he told her.
“Thank you,” Jane replied. “And you look dashing,” she added with a small laugh.
“Shall we head to Rossi’s?” he asked.
“Yeah, let’s go,” she agreed.
They were having a celebration at Rossi’s that night. Actually, they were helping Will surprise JJ with a surprise wedding.
It still seemed odd to Jane when she thought about the fact that she and Spencer got married before them, especially considering the other couple had been together longer and had a son together.
It was a beautiful ceremony and reception, both held in Rossi’s big backyard.
Jane smiled and rested a hand on her growing belly as she watched Spencer play with Henry. She couldn’t wait to watch him interact with their own child.
~~~~~
Monday, June 4th.
“Jane, I already told you. I don’t want you in the field while you’re pregnant!” Spencer argued.
They were driving into work when an argument broke out about Jane and the baby’s safety on the job.
“Spence, I understand you’re concern, but I don’t need to stay behind. I want to keep working cases with the team until I’m not allowed to fly anymore,” Jane insisted.
Spencer sighed and shook his head without saying anything else.
They continued to drive in silence for a few minutes before Jane spoke up again.
“How about this: I still go with the team on cases, but I stay at the local headquarters?” she offered as a compromise.
Spencer thought it over before agreeing.
When they arrived at the BAU, Garcia was waiting to inform them that a new case had come in.
Jane put headphones on her now visible baby bump, a suggestion that was made by JJ. She alternated the kind of music she put on. Sometimes it was Mozart, sometimes it was the Harry Potter soundtrack.
~~~~~
Around the same time that her belly started to show, Spencer began to talk to the baby by laying down next to Jane with his face next to her bump.
“Hi, little one,” he cooed. “I can’t wait to meet you. I’m going to love you so so much.”
Jane giggled, finding the whole thing absolutely adorable.
The couple also decided to start reading to the baby, reading a chapter of Harry Potter each night.
Over time, Jane began to get food cravings, causing Spencer to make frequent trips to the grocery store for ice cream and strawberries. Delicious separately, but nauseating when paired together, Jane found out.
What started out as a way to tell Spencer that she was pregnant turned into a serious search for a house they could call their own. Morgan helped them out, as he had several renovated houses. In the end, they decided to buy on that Morgan renovated himself.
On June 23rd, they team worked together to help them move into their new house. Jane wasn’t allowed to help, per Spencer’s orders, so she guided the others by telling them where to put things.
After all was put away and everyone else headed home, Spencer wrapped his arms around Jane from behind. Jane wrapped her own around his, hugging him back.
“Welcome home,” he told her.
~~~~~
A little over a week after moving in, Jane and Spencer hosted a get together for the 4th of July. The party also served as a house-warming gathering to celebrate their new home.

Bless The Broken Road - 32
The next day, the girls flew back home. Jane arrived at the apartment to find Spencer sitting with Shortstack on the couch.
“Hey!” she cheered.
“Hey! How was your trip?” he asked.
“It was a lot of fun!” Jane said as she kicked off her shoes and moved to join them. “What about you? Did you have a fun night?”
“Yeah, it was great,” he told her. He scanned her face. “You look like you want to tell me something.”
Jane blushed and looked down at Shortstack, scratching behind his ears. “Umm,” she stammered. “The girls and I were talking and joking around and, and they ended up daring me to kiss Emily?” She looked up at him briefly to see his eyes had widened slightly. She averted her eyes back to Shortstack again and continued, “So Emily and I sort of kissed last night.”
“Wow,” Spencer said, clearing his throat.
“Are you mad?” she asked him shyly.
“No, ahem, I’m not mad. That’s actually kind of hot?” he stated.
Jane’s head snapped up to look at his face. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
She grinned and chuckled a bit.
~~~~~
The week of the wedding, Hotch gave the team Friday off to prepare for their weekend of celebrating. The rehearsal dinner was that night at Rossi’s place. They enjoyed a beautiful night together with the team as well as friends and family that had come in from out of town for the weekend. Out of town guests included Emily, Jane’s parents, grandmother, and other relatives, and Spencer’s mother.
When the night came to an end, Jane headed back to Garcia’s with her for the night, as she and Spencer thought it best to spend the night before their wedding away from each other.
In the morning, the ladies headed to the salon to get their hair and makeup done for the big day. Jane’s hair was put up in a bun with some strands left loose in the front and a sparkly clip in the back.
After they were all done at the salon, they grabbed a quick lunch before driving out to the wedding location. As it was a rural location, they had set up tents to act as dressing rooms for the wedding party. The men would all be wearing gray suits while the bridesmaids’ dresses were a shade of burgundy.
Outside of the tents, they could hear guests chattering as they arrived and took their seats on the folding chairs set up in the clearing. The area was surrounded by beautiful fall foliage and they’d set up pumpkins and burgundy, purple, and orange flowers to line the ends of the aisle. The front had an arch set up for the couple to stand underneath as they said their vows.
When it was time to begin, the wedding party minus Jane and her father lined up and began their processsion. He’d wait until it was time for her to walk to bring her out so Spencer wouldn’t see her too early.
First, Spencer escorted his and Jane’s mothers down the aisle and seated them in the front row before joining Jack up at the altar. Next, the bridesmaids and groomsmen made their way up to the front. Chuckles of amusement could be heard as Henry walked down the eisle, a pillow with the rings on it in one hand and Shortstack’s leash in the other. While he obviously was unable to drop flower petals as he went, they had Shortstack wearing a flower headpiece in order to be considered the flower dog.
“I think they’re ready for you,” Jane’s father said. “Are you ready?”
Jane took a deep breath before nodding and smiling. “Yeah.”
He embraced her. “I’m so happy for you, sweetheart.”
“Thanks, Dad,” she breathed into his shoulder.
They broke apart from their hug and she linked her arm around his for him to lead her down the aisle. Everyone stood as she made her way out into the open.
As soon as she turned to walk down the aisle, Jane locked eyes with Spencer and smiled.
His eyes widened in awe. Beside him, Morgan heard Spencer take an audible breath in as he saw his bride for the first time.
When they reached the front of the chairs, Jane’s father kissed her cheek before taking a seat next to her mother and Jane made her way up to stand next to Spencer.
He reached under her veil and touched her face. “You look beautiful,” he spoke softly.
Jane smiled but said nothing. The couple looked to Jack to begin officiating the ceremony.
“We’re gathered here today to celebrate the love that Jane and Spencer have for each other and the life they are about to embark on together in marriage. I remember the first time I met Spencer and saw the pair together back when they were just friends. Jane insisted they were just friends and coworkers, but I could tell there was more to it. Now today, I am so happy they’ve asked me to officiate this service,” Jack shared. “Without further ado, the bride and groom have both prepared vows to read to each other.”
Spencer and Jane turned to face each other again. They both shared their vows  and then Jack asked for the rings. Henry brought Shortstack over to the center, elicited “aww”s from many in the room. They placed the rings on each others’ fingers and said their “I do”s.
“You may now kiss the bride,” Jack told Spencer. Spencer lifted Jane’s veil and leaned down to kiss her. They heard Morgan let out a whistle and many people cheered and applauded.
“It is my honor to present to you, Dr. and Dr. Spencer Reid,” Jack announced.
Spencer took Jane’s hand and together they walked down the aisle, offically husband and wife. Neither one could stop smiling.
They had a few hours to take pictures before the reception started. The reception was held in a barn near the ceremony property. It was a wonderful, fun-filled evening of dancing and celebrating with all of their family and closest friends. At the end of the night, they headed back home, both exhausted.
Jane was unable to hold back a yawn on the drive back.
“Tired?” Spencer asked her.
“Yeah.”
“Me too,” Spencer admitted.
“I know wedding night tradition calls for the bride and groom to sleep together for the first time as husband and wife, but how would you feel about waiting until the honeymoon? Honestly, right now I just want to sleep,” Jane laughed. “And I want our first time as husband and wife to be perfect so I’d rather wait.”
They stopped at a red light and Spencer turned to look at her. “I want it to be perfect too. Let’s wait until our honeymoon,” he agreed. He leaned over and kissed her before the light turned green again.
~~~
Monday, October 3rd.
Jane and Spencer took an early morning flight to Vienna Italy to start off their honeymoon. They settled into their hotel before going off to take in the sights.
After they got back to the hotel, Jane took a seat on the bed and smiled at Spencer as he came to join her.
“What?” he asked, trying to read her face.
“I’m just so happy right now,” she told him.
“Yeah? Me too,” Spencer agreed, smiling as he lifted a hand to her face.
He pulled her to him and began kissing her. Jane reached up and tangled her hands in his hair and Spencer moved them so that they could lay down on the bed. They both worked to take off each other’s clothes and then had their belated wedding night.
~
The couple woke up in the morning to the sun streaming through the window. Spencer drew circles on Jane’s bare back. Her eyes fluttered open and she smiled up at him, reaching up to give him a peck on the lips.
“Good morning,” she whispered.
“Good morning,” he repeated back, giving her another kiss.
“Mmm, I wish we could just spend all day in bed,” she told him. “But I also don’t wanna miss seeing the sights while we’re here.”
“I know. I feel the same way,” he agreed. Spencer stretched and moved to sit up, pulling Jane up with him. “Come on. Let’s shower and get going.”
~~~
Jane and Spencer had a wonderful time during their honeymoon traveling throughout Europe. After a few weeks, it was time to get back home and back to work.
~~~
Sunday, October 16th.
Jane and Spencer were greeted by Jack and Shortstack at their apartment upon their arrival. They thanked Jack for watching Shortstack before he left so they could get to unpacking.
~
The next day, the couple came into work holding hands.
Everyone was awaiting their arrival and welcomed them back with hugs. Before they could get to asking how their trip was, however, a case came in. They’d (meaning Garcia mainly) have to get the details later.
~
Wednesday, October 26th.
The team was on a case in Colorado. Jane was at the sink in the bathroom of the local police station, staring at her reflection in the mirror when JJ entered the room.
“Hey, everything alright? You’ve been in here a while,” JJ asked her.
“Yeah, sorry. We should get back to the case,” Jane replied, attempting to walk past her. JJ put a hand on her arm to stop her.
“Wait, slow down. The team’s fine without us for a few minutes. What’s up?” she questioned her.
Jane sighed, looking at the floor and then back to JJ. “My period was supposed to start yesterday and it hasn’t yet.”
“You might be pregnant?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright, well. Why don’t we make an excuse to go to the store later before we head back to the hotel for the night. We can get you a test and you can take it in my room.”
“OK,” Jane agreed with a nod. “OK. Thank you, JJ.” She stepped forward and hugged her before the two went back to the team.
That night, Jane made an excuse to Spencer about stepping out to call Jack so that she could head over to JJ’s room to take a pregnancy test.
They waited the alloted time for the test to be complete before Jane took a deep breath and looked at the stick.
She look up at JJ and told her, “It’s negative. I guess it’s just a false alarm,” Jane told her.
“Wow,” JJ breathed. Jane threw the test in the trash and moved to take a seat on the bed. “That’s good though, right? You guys just got married. You aren’t ready for kids yet. Are you?”
“Right,” Jane agreed. “I just...” she trailed off for a moment. “I didn’t think I’d be this disappointed that it’s negative.”
“Ok,” JJ said, taking a seat next to her. “Well, maybe you are ready. Take some time to think about it and then talk to Spencer about it,” she suggested.
“Yeah, I know.”
~~~~~
Thursday, November 10th.
It was weeks later and Jane still hadn’t talked to Spencer about her feelings about having kids. When they had gotten back from the case where she’d had a false alarm, they’d slept together again.
Now Jane was staring at herself in the bathroom mirror. She’d taken another pregnancy test. It was negative again so she tossed it in the trash.
Spencer entered the bathroom and she busied herself with finishing up getting ready for work.
In the mirror’s reflection, she saw Spencer look down to the trash and see the test.
“Jane, is that what I think it is?” he questioned.
Jane sighed and turned around to face him, leaning on the counter. “Yeah. It’s negative. On our first case back after our honeymoon, I thought I might’ve been pregnant but it was a false alarm and now I thought I’d check again since we slept together when we got back from that case but no.”
“OK,” he said, trying to read her face.
“But I realized from it that I’m ready to be a mom. I want a baby, Spencer,” she told him.
He grinned at her and replied back, “I do too.”
~
It was a paperwork day at the BAU. Jane decided to stay behind during lunch and continue working while Spencer went to go get food for both of them.
He returned to the office and set the food on her desk before bending down to kiss her cheek.
As he had already finished his own paperwork, he returned to his desk to read a book. Jane noticed this but didn’t think anything of it.
At the end of the day, Jane walked over to his desk just as he was setting the book down. She glanced at the title and realized what he was reading. It was a book about ovulation and getting pregnant.
When they arrived home, he began to explain to her how they could have planned sex around her ovulation to increase their chances of getting pregnant.
“We just missed your ovulating time for November, but we could always try anyways. Do you want to?” he asked.
“Yeah, might as well,” she laughed. He stepped closer to her and kissed her. She broke the kiss and chuckled. “Oh, you meant right now?”
“Is that a problem?” he asked.
“Not at all.” She took his hand and led him back to the bedroom.
~ A few weeks later, Jane took another pregnancy test but it was still negative. They planned to try again around the start of December, but a case came up, preventing them from doing so on time. They tried later again anyway.
~
Wednesday, December 21st.
“Spencer!” Jane called from the bathroom.
“What?” he asked from the bedroom.
She entered the room holding her most recent pregnancy test.
“It’s positive,” she told him.
He stood up from the bed. “What?! Are you serious?”
“Yes!” she said, laughing.
“Oh my god!” he laughed, taking the test from her and seeing it for himself. He set it down on the bedside table then embraced her, picking her up and spinning her around.
“We’re gonna have a baby!” Jane cheered.
“We’re gonna have a baby,” Spencer repeated, equally as excited.
~
The next day, they scheduled a doctor’s appointment.
The doctor did their own tests to check on Jane before turning to the couple.
“I’m sorry to tell you this, but it looks like you’re at home test was a false positive. You’re not pregnant,” she told them.
“Oh,” was all Jane managed to say. Spencer wrapped an arm around her.
“I’m sorry. Keep trying,” she encouraged them. You’re free to go whenever you’re ready. I’ll give you two some time alone now.
“Thank you,” Spencer told the doctor. When she left, he asked Jane, “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she told him. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. At home tests can be faulty. That’s why we scheduled this appointment.”
“Yeah,” Jane said, unsure what else to say.
~~~
Around New Years, it was time for Jane to be ovulating again. Spencer was expecting them to try again when they got home from work, but Jane wasn’t sure if she could do it.
“Spencer, I’m not so sure about this,” she told him.
“What do you mean?” he asked.
“I don’t want to try to make a baby tonight,” she told him.
“Oh,” he replied, surprised. “Alright. That’s fine. You’re ovulating for a few more days. We can try tomorrow.”
“No, not just tonight,” Jane told him, shaking her head. “I can’t do it, Spence.” She took a seat on the couch. “I can’t stand the disappointment of seeing another negative test,” she explained.
He stood in front of her. “You don’t think I’m disappointed too everytime it’s a negative or a false alarm?” I hate it too,” he insisted.
“But it’s not you who feels guilty every time. It’s like there’s something wrong with me! What if I’m not able to give you a baby?”
“So you just wanna give up now?”
Jane shook her head. “No, I’m not saying that. Maybe we could just take a break from trying for a while. Maybe we’re forcing something that isn’t supposed to happen yet.”
Spencer sighed and took a seat next to her.
“I know you’re excited to start a family and I am too, but can we wait just a little while?” she asked.
He thought about it for a moment before agreeing. “Alright. We can put it off for a while.”
“Thank you,” she told him, turning to hug him.
“Of course,” he replied.

Bless The Broken Road - 31
Later in the day, a case came in.
Once the team landed in Des Moines, Iowa, Morgan and Jane got in one of the SUV’s to head to the crime scene.
Jane shifted in her seat and made a noise of discomfort.
Morgan glanced over at her. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” she nodded. “Just sore.”
“Late night last night, huh?” he asked cheekily.
Jane chuckled. “No, that’s not why. I got a workout in this morning before work,” she explained.
“I didn’t know you worked out.”
“I started not too long ago. I go on runs with JJ and stuff.”
“And you’ve never invited me,” Morgan stated, feigning hurt.
“You seem like you’d be a little too intense for me,” she admitted.
“If JJ can keep up, so can you,” he argued.
Jane looked over at him and thought for a moment. “Alright. Sometime we can go for a run together.”
~
Later that night in their hotel room, Jane and Spencer were relaxing on their bed when Garcia called, wanting to talk about some wedding details.
“Jane, I need to schedule a day for you to pick out your wedding dress,” the blonde told her.
“How soon do we need to do it?” Jane asked.
“Within the next few weeks. How about not this Sunday, but the next?”
“OK.” Jane covered the phone and whispered to Spencer, “When is that?”
He smiled. “February 20th.”
She mouthed a ‘thank you’ before telling Garcia, “Let me know when you get a time scheduled so I can let my mother know.”
Spencer reached for the remote and turned on the TV, flipping through channels.
“Who else do you want to be there with you?”
“Probably just my mom, you, and JJ since Emily won’t be able to be there.”
Spencer let out a gasp and Jane looked up. He found Dr. Who on TV.
“Alrighty. And I think we should find the bridesmaid dresses that day too. Emily can send me her measurements and we can get hers as well.”
“Alright.”
Spencer leaned into her and began kissing her neck, trying to get her off the phone.
Garcia started to talk about more wedding stuff, but Jane cut her off. “Pen, can we talk about this later?”
“Oh, sure,” she agreed, a bit sad.
“I’m sorry, someone found Dr. Who on TV and is getting a little impatient to watch it.”
She heard her chuckle on the other end of the phone. “I gotcha. Talk later, bye!”
“Bye, Pen!”
~~~
For Valentine’s Day this year, Spencer and Jane decided to spend the night in, watching movies. They recalled last year’s vacation and began talking about ideas for where to go for their honeymoon.
“What if we traveled around Europe for 2 weeks?” Jane suggested.
“Hopefully Hotch would be alright with us taking that much time off,” Spencer pointed out.
“I’m sure he would be. Oh! We could visit Emily!” Jane exclaimed.
“We’ll have just seen her at the wedding,” Spencer chuckled.
“Oh, right. Well anyway, we could go to France, England, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Germany, Spain-”
“Anywhere we want really,” Spencer cut in before she could list off every country on the continent.
“Oh, it’ll be so much fun!”
~~~
Friday, February 18th.
While Spencer was outside with Shortstack, Jane received a call from her mother.
“Hey, Mom!”
“Hey, sweetheart! I was calling to see if your dad can hang out at your place while we’re at the bridal shop on Sunday.”
“You mean hang out with Spencer?” Jane asked, glancing at the door, hoping he’d be back soon.
“Yeah!”
“Umm, ok,” she finally agreed. “That should be fine.”
“OK, great! We’ll see you on Sunday! Love you.”
“Love you,” Jane repeated back before ending the call.
Spencer and Shortstack returned shortly afterward. “Hey, my mom just called,” she told him.
“Oh, and?” he asked, sensing there was more.
“My dad’s going to hang out with you while my mom is with me picking out my dress,” she shared.
His eyes widened. “Oh, I don’t know, Jane. Are you sure that’s a good idea? It’s going to be really awkward.”
“I wasn’t too fond of the idea either, but I’m sure it’ll be a good thing! You two can get to know each other a little bit better.” She walked over to him and hugged him. “It’ll be fine,” she assured him.
~~~
On Sunday, everyone met at Jane and Spencer’s apartment before heading to the bridal shop while Spencer and Jane’s dad hung back.
Hours later, Jane had found the perfect dress along with the perfect bridesmaid dresses. They headed back to the apartment and said goodbye to Jane’s parents.
When they were alone again, Jane asked Spencer, “So, how did it go with my dad?”
“Surprisingly well. We had fun,” he told her.
“Good. I’m glad,” she replied, reaching up to give him a kiss.
“How was dress shopping?” he asked when she pulled away.
“Exhausting, but great! I love the dress I picked out!”
“I can’t wait to see you in it,” Spencer smiled.
Jane smiled back and kissed him again.
~~~~~
In April, the team was hit with a tough case dealing with kids.
It was rough on the whole team, but it seemed to hit Jane more than cases dealing with kids had in the past.
When the team got back to Quantico, they still had a bit of paperwork to finish before they could go home. Jane was almost done, but couldn’t maintain her focus. She caught her self staring off into space multiple times.
“How are you doing?” JJ’s voice snapped her out of her headspace. She looked up at her and shrugged.
“I’m alright.”
“You’ve been staring at the same page for five minutes,” JJ stated, taking a seat on Jane’s desk.
“Right, ah.”
“What’s going on up there in that brain of yours?”
“How’d you do it?” Jane asked her. “Do what?”
“Get up the nerve to bring a kid into this world knowing what you know about all of the dangers that are out there,” Jane clarified.
“Well, first off, it was an accident,” JJ laughed. “I definitely didn’t plan on getting pregnant, but I don’t regret it for a second. And someday, when the timing is right, Will and I would love to have another kid.”
“Really?” Jane questioned.
“Yeah. I think being a mom is worth the risk. And you just have to remember that there are people like us who fight to protect anything from happening to people to keep them safe.”
Jane pondered what she just said before nodding. “Yeah, you’re right.”
“Wait, are you...”
Jane’s eyes widened. “No! No, not right now,” she insisted. “I just, I’ve started thinking about it more lately with the wedding and all. I know Spencer’s going to want to have children, and I do too, but sometimes... I don’t know,” Jane confessed. “Plus if we have a kid, one of us is going to have to transfer to a desk job. It's not like with Shortstack where Jack can watch him or her whenever we're on a case.”
“You should talk to him about it,” JJ suggested.
“I know, but maybe not right now. I want to wait for this case to not be so fresh in my mind. Right now, I feel like I never want to have kids.”
JJ looked up behind Jane and her eyes widened. Jane turned to see Spencer approaching her from behind.
“Spence!” she exclaimed.
“I was just checking to see if you were ready to go home,” he told her.
She turned back to look at the paperwork. “Actually, I-” JJ took the paperwork from her before she could tell him she had more to do. Jane mouthed ‘thank you’ to her before turning back to Spencer. “Yeah, I’m ready.”
The ride home was completely silent.
Thoughts whirled around in Jane’s head as she wondered how much Spencer had overheard.
When they arrived home, she broke the silence. “Are you alright? You’ve been awfully quiet.”
“When were you planning on telling me?” he asked.
“How much did you hear?”
"Just the end part where you said you never want to have kids.”
Jane sighed and took his hand, leading him over to sit on the couch. “It’s not that I don’t want to have kids. It’s just that thinking about all of the horrible things that happened to those kids on our last case made me question the idea of bringing more children into the world. I was planning on talking to you about it later when the case wasn’t fresh on my mind,” she told him. “I want kids, Spence. It’s just that it’s a big decision and it’s kind of scary.”
He took her hand. “It is scary. That’s why we don’t have to do it alone. We’d be doing it together.”
The pair decided to end the discussion of kids for the night and get ready for bed. They spent the night laying in bed holding each other. The case had been rough for both of them.
~~~
Three months until the wedding, Jane and Spencer arrived home from a long day at work.
Spencer wanted to relax and cuddle on the couch, but Jane insisted that they needed to finalize the music for the wedding.
“Oh yeah, the music. Trying to dance in front of everyone we know. Lovely,” Spencer said. He’d always been insecure about his dancing.
“Spence, you and I have danced plenty of times. Besides, the first dance is slow dancing. It’s easy. Here.” She pulled up a song on her laptop that was one of the contender’s for their first dance song and hit play before guiding him into the living room.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and he placed his around her waist.
I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you.
“See, this ain’t so bad. You just sway and go in a circle along to the music.”
“You’re right. Maybe this isn’t so bad,” he agreed. They continued to dance until the song ended. He leaned down and kissed her before resting his forehead against hers. “I think we just found our first dance song.”
~~~~~
A month before the wedding, JJ hosted Jane’s bridal shower. They had a beautiful lunch with the women of Jane’s family as well as the women of the BAU.
~~~~~
The Friday the week before the wedding Jane and Spencer had their respective bachelorette and bachelor parties. Before the parties, Jane and Spencer had a discussion to set limits on what could happen, assuming both parties would involve some form of strippers.
Emily flew in a few days before the bachelorette party so she could be there the whole week leading up to the wedding.
Jane, JJ, Penelope, and Emily took a quick flight to New York for the night of the bachelorette party, planning to spend the night in a hotel and then fly back the next day.
Spencer’s party remained fairly mild. Morgan knew he wouldn’t be comfortable with anything too crazy.
The girls hit up several clubs in town before heading back to the hotel room and talking through most of the night.
They got personal. Asking questions about Jane’s past sex life as well as her current relationship with Reid.
“Remember when Jane came to work one morning with a hickey on her neck?” Garcia laughed.
“What? Did you do it before work?” Emily asked, also laughing.
“Yes...in the shower,” Jane admitted, causing the girls to burst out in laughter at her flustered state.
“OK, OK, tell us this; have you ever kissed a girl before?” Garcia giggled.
Jane’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped a bit. “What? No!”
“Aw, you’re no fun,” Garcia joked.
Jane looked at the other two. Emily had a devious smirk on her face.
“Kiss me,” she told her.
“Wait, what?” Jane questioned.
“Kiss me,” Emily repeated. “Come on, you have to do something crazy at this party before you get married!”
The other two women agreed with Emily and Jane groaned. “Seriously, guys?”
“Kiss her, kiss her, kiss her,” they chanted.
“Ugh, fine!” Jane moved forward and grabbed Emily’s face, kissing her. JJ and Garcia cheered. They kissed for a while before breaking apart and looking at each other.
“Um, wow... that was actually really good,” Jane blushed.
“Right back at ya,” Emily chuckled, giving her a wink.
Bless The Broken Road Progress Update
Hi all! First off, I want to say thank you so much to those of you following and reading “Bless The Broken Road”. I’ve put a lot of hours into this story and it means so much that you’d take the time to read it and enjoy it.
Second of all, I wanted to give a heads up on the progress of it. When I originally started writing, I waited until I had a lot of parts finished before actually publishing anything so that way I’d have parts to publish even when life got busy and I didn’t have time to write. After tonight’s part (part 31) is posted, I have no more, pre-written parts left and my life has been crazy for the last few months. I’m going to try my best to see this through to the end and get it out to you, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stick to posting a part a week from here on out.
Please have patience with me. I truly love what I’m writing and love that you like it too.
Thank you again your support!
Bless The Broken Road - 30
Saturday, September 25th.
“What do you think about having a picnic in the park for lunch today?” Spencer asked Jane as they sat at the table eating breakfast.
“That sounds nice, but what’s the occasion?” Jane questioned.
“You know, nice weather,” he stated.
The picnic was...interesting. They ate their lunch and made conversation, but Spencer was acting weird and nervous, just like he did when the pair had first met. After finishing their meal, they laid down on the blanket and Jane rested her head on Spencer’s stomach.
Eventually, she decided to ask him what was going on.
Jane sat up and looked at him. “Spencer, what’s up? You’ve been acting weird all day,” she told him.
He took a deep breath and decided it was time. He stood up and helped Jane to her feet as well.
Taking her hands, he spoke, “Jane, I love you so, so much. I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that you feel the same way about me. I don’t know how I ever got so lucky to have the chance to have you as my best friend, let alone my girlfriend. And I hope the day will never come where you decide to leave me, because I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Spencer took one hand away from hers to reach into his pocket. “And so,” he paused and got down on one knee. Jane put her free hand to her mouth. “Jane Elizabeth Addison, will you marry me?”
She nodded, tears coming to her eyes before finally shouting out, “Yes! Yes, of course!”
He grinned, putting the ring on her finger before standing so he could kiss her. After breaking the kiss, she wrapped her arms around him tightly.
“I love you,” she breathed into his shoulder.
“I love you, too,” he repeated back.
When she pulled away, she noticed a familiar face approaching them from behind Spencer.
“Jack!”
“Congratulations, sis!” he cheered, pulling her into a hug. “Spencer asked me to take pictures from a hidden spot in the park,” he explained.
“How long have you two been planning this?” she questioned.
Spencer shrugged, still grinning. “Pretty much since we got back from that case with the brides.”
Something clicked in Jane’s brain as she put the pieces together. That’s why he was so quiet during that case. That’s why he and Jack were hanging out that one day when she got home.
“I don’t want to intrude too much, but I’ll let you know when the pictures are edited and ready to be shared with you,” Jack told them before bidding them goodbye.
Jane turned back to Spencer after Jack left, her grin matching his. “Let’s go back to the apartment, we should call people and tell them the news!” She took his hand and led him home.
They called Jane’s parents first. Next, Jane suggested calling Diana.
“Or I could just write about it in my daily letter,” Spencer suggested.
“Spence, this is something you tell someone over the phone,” she argued.
“What if she’s having a bad day?”
“If that’s the case, we can ask the nurses to call us back when she’s feeling better,” Jane insisted.
“OK,” he gave in with a nod.
Jane dialed the sanitarium and put it on speaker phone. The nurse gave the phone to Diana upon their request.
“Hey, Mom, how are you doing today?”
“I’m good. Did you propose yet?” Diana responded, getting straight to the point of what she wanted to know.
Jane chuckled.
“Yes, I did, Mom. And she said yes!” he cheered, squeezing Jane’s hand.
“Oh, Spencer! That’s wonderful! I’m so happy for you two!”
“Thank you, Diana,” Jane spoke, blushing.
When they got off the phone with Diana, they called Jane’s grandma and then decided they’d wait to tell the team in person on Monday.
~~~~~
On the way up the elevator Monday, Jane and Spencer agreed to hide Jane’s ring until they announced their engagement.
The team was sent into the briefing room almost immediately upon arrival.
After the briefing was over and Hotch told them, “Wheels up in 30,” Jane stopped the team from leaving.
“Spencer and I have something to share with the team,” she told everyone as she and Spencer moved to the front of the room. She slipped her hand in her pocket and placed the ring on her hand. She then took it back out and Spencer took her hand, raising it up. “We’re getting married!”
The room erupted in cheers and cries of congratulations. Garcia rushed forward to embrace both of them.
“I am so excited! I have so many ideas to help you plan the wedding. Ooo! I call dibs on planning the bachelorette party!” she cheered.
“And I can plan your bridal shower,” JJ added, also coming to get hugs in.
“Leave the bachelor party up to me,” Morgan grinned, hugging them as well.
Everyone got their hugs and congratulations in and then moved to prepare for the flight to the case.
During the thirty minutes before they had to take off, Jane went to her desk to double check her go bag, ensuring she had everything she needed.
“So,” Spencer spoke. Jane looked up to see him approaching her desk. “Wedding planning.”
“Wedding planning,” she repeated back to him. “I guess it’d be good to get started on that sooner rather than later.”
“I’ve been thinking about it. I do want to have some say in it, but ultimately, I want you to have your dream wedding,” Spencer explained to her.
Jane smiled and grabbed his hand, giving it a squeeze. “That’s so sweet. How about Garcia and I plan it and I’ll keep you updated. If you want something altered, all you have to do is let us know and we can find a compromise.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Spencer said, smiling.
“I’ve actually been thinking about it too, specifically the date,” Jane confessed.
“And?” Spencer raised his eyebrows.
“I was thinking October first of next year. That gives us a little over a year to plan and prepare and we can start off our favorite month with our wedding!” she shared.
“That sounds perfect!” Spencer agreed.
“Yay!” Jane cheered, standing up from her seat. “It’s settled then!” She picked up her go bag and the two headed off to the jet.
~~~
When the team arrived home from the case, Jane asked Garcia to help her plan the wedding.
“Yes, yes, absolutely, yes!” Garcia squealed.
“Great!” Jane laughed.
“We should have a girls night Friday or Saturday to get started!” the blonde suggested.
Jane nodded and then shrugged. “I’m good with either.”
“Make it Friday,” Rossi chimed in as he walked by. They turned to him. “Everyone is invited to my place Saturday night for yours and Spencer’s engagement party.”
Jane’s eyes went wide. “Oh Rossi, you really don’t have to do that!” she insisted.
“Of course I do. You two are like family!” he stated.
Spencer walked up to Jane and put an arm around her before she could object again. “Thank you so much, Rossi,” he told him.
The team agreed to go over to Rossi’s Saturday night and told Jane to invite Jack too.
Just as the team was ready to head home for the night, Hotch got a phone call. Another case had come in.
“Everyone, take an hour to go repack your bags and then meet at the jet. We’ll do the briefing on the flight there,” he ordered them.
After repacking, Jane and Reid decided to take the rest of the time to go grab lunch at a little cafe.
“I think we should figure out who we want to be our bridesmaids/groomsmen before Saturday night so we can ask people,” Jane stated before taking a sip of her coffee.
“OK,” Spencer agreed.
“I was thinking JJ and Penny for sure. What do you think about asking Emily?”
“She would love that!” he told her. “I’ll have Morgan, Hotch, and Rossi for groomsmen with Morgan as best man. So we’re basically having the team be our wedding party,” he chuckled.
“It makes sense though,” Jane stated. “If Morgan’s your best man, then I think I’ll go with Garcia for my maid of honor so they can be paired together. Ooo! I can get together cute little proposal boxes to ask everyone to be part of the wedding party on Saturday night!”
~
The case ended up taking longer than expected, meaning Garcia and Jane were unable to have their girls night on Friday, as the team arrived back late that night.
Saturday morning, Jane created the wedding party boxes.
“Are you making boxes for me too?” Spencer questioned.
“Mmhmm,” she confirmed.
“Don’t you think it’s a little girly?” he asked.
“Yours aren’t as girly. It’ll be fine,” she assured him.
In the evening, they headed to Rossi’s for the party.
The whole team was there as well as Jack to help celebrate their engagement.
Near the end of the dinner portion of the evening, Jane and Spencer stood for a toast, the first of what would be many for the joyful occasion.
“I speak for both of us when I say that I just want to thank you all for being here to celebrate this exciting new chapter in our lives. And a special thanks to Rossi for hosting this beautiful party.” Jane paused and nodded toward him. He raised his glass and nodded back. “You’ve all been there through the ups and downs of our relationship and have given advice and support at different points and we just really love and appreciate all of you so, so much. Cheers to what’s to come!”
“Cheers!” Everyone repeated back, lifting their glasses towards the middle of the table and clinking them with those around them.
Spencer pulled Jane in for a quick kiss before they sat back down.
Later in the night, Jane handed out the boxes and everyone loved them, each of them accepting their respective roles the couple asked them to take on in their wedding party.
“And we shipped a box overseas to Emily to ask her to be a bridesmaid as well,” Jane informed them.
“Oh! That’ll be so great!” Garcia cheered.
As everyone chatted excitedly about the wedding, Jane caught Jack’s eye and gestured for him to follow her off to the side of the room.
“We want you to have a part in the wedding in some way too,” Jane told him. “What would you like to do? You could be a reader, an usher, or you know what? You could get licensed to be the officiant!”
“That would be really cool!” Jack agreed.
“Great!” Jane cheered, giving her brother a hug.
~~~
Over the next few months, Jane and Garcia worked to plan all of the details of the wedding, consulting Spencer occasionally.
Jane and Spencer agreed on having Henry be the ring bearer in the ceremony. As there weren’t any little girls in either of their families or their BAU family, they chose to have Shortstack be the flower dog instead.
As the wedding would take place in autumn, the color scheme chosen was one that would fit well with the fall foliage; burgundy, orange and of course Spencer’s favorite color, purple.
One weekend, the couple, along with Garcia, took a drive to look at different wedding venue options. They were able to find a beautiful, rural location that would be perfect for an outdoor wedding. The location had plenty of trees surrounding a clearing that would provide them with plenty of leaves to help naturally decorate the area.
One day, the couple got permission to get off from work early in order to go to an appointment for a cake tasting. Just as they were getting ready to head out, a case came in.
“Don’t you worry,” Garcia assured them. “I will get it rescheduled as soon as the case is over.”
Jane felt lucky that Garcia was the one handling most of their organization of the planning. She was one of the few who understood rescheduling appointments, unlike other planners had they hired a professional wedding planner to do it.
~
Towards the end of January, Jane decided she wanted to start working out more and asked JJ if she’d like to work out together.
“Is there a reason you’re wanting to work out more?” JJ questioned. “You know Spencer doesn’t care how fit you are.”
“I know that,” Jane assured her. “I just want to look my best for the wedding,” she explained.
~
Monday, February 7th, 2011.
Jane was doing cool down stretches in the living room when Spencer entered the room, still in his pajamas.
“Janey, what are you doing?” he asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“I thought I’d get a work out in before we have to go to work in case a case comes up,” she told him.
"Why have you been into exercising lately?” he questioned.
“I want to look the best that I can for the wedding,” she stated, stretching her arms.
“Jane, you look beautiful no matter what. You don’t have to exercise to look good. You always look amazing.”
Jane smiled at him and shook her head. “I know you think that, but I just want to do this for myself.”
She finished up stretching and took a drink of water from her glass on the coffee table. Spencer moved towards her, wanting to hug her, but she pulled back.
“Spencer, I’m all gross and sweaty right now.”
“I don’t care,” he insisted, moving to hug her anyway.
She allowed him to hold her for a moment before stepping back and announcing she was going to go shower and get ready for work.
“Alright. Why don’t I make breakfast while you do that?”
“Sounds great!” she cheered before walking off.

Bless The Broken Road - 29
Another month went by and Jane was ready to retake her psych eval in order to see if she was ready to reenter the field.
“What if I don’t pass?” Jane asked Spencer the night before, sharing her fears.
“If that’s the case, you’ll just need more time. You’ll be able to take it again after a while.”
Jane snuggled into him, remaining silent.
~ Tuesday, September 14th.
Jane retook her psych eval in the morning and managed to pass. Her therapist’s only requirement was that she continued to have sessions for a while as she eased back into working in the field.
Upon her return to the bullpen, she rushed up to Spencer to tell him the good news.
“I passed!” she cheered.
“That’s great!” he said, getting up from his chair to embrace her.
Within the next hour, Hotch informed them that they had a new case. Already, Jane was getting thrown back into the field.
The team gathered and Garcia began the briefing.
“The body of a woman was found on the steps of a church in Kansas City, Missouri. She was wearing a wedding dress and she was supposed to be married there the day before she was found. The fiancé got a voicemail, however, on the morning of the wedding breaking off the engagement.”
Garcia paused and played the voicemail for the team.
“Two weeks ago, another woman was found the exact same way in Kansas City, Kansas. And she left this voicemail for her fiancé the morning of her wedding.”
She played the older voicemail.
“They’re the exact same, verbatim,” Reid stated.
“Wheels up in 30,” Hotch ordered, ending the briefing.
When they landed in Kansas City, Jane and Reid headed to interview the fiancees of the victims. Both fiancees told them that the victims never showed signs of getting cold feet and how they didn’t know anyone who would want to do this to either of them.
“We were finally going to get married,” the second victim’s groom cried. “We’d known each other forever but have only been dating a few years. I was finally going to get to marry my best friend, but she was taken away from me on what should’ve been the happiest day of our lives.”
Spencer looked over at Jane, but she didn’t notice. When they were finished with the interviews, they met up with the rest of the team to see what everyone had found.
The maids of honor had similar statements. They also said they last saw the bride at their respective rehearsal dinners.
Hotch and Rossi, who had gone to the latest crime scene, shared that it was clearly a spot to display the body and not the place where the murder occurred.
As the team talked, Jane noticed that Reid was unusually quiet.
“I can’t find any connections between the victims, their weddings, or their wedding parties,” Garcia told the team via video chat.
“See if any services at the rehearsal dinners are the same. Catering, valet, décor, event staff, etc,” JJ instructed.
“JJ and Morgan, why don’t you head to the rehearsal dinner location of the 2nd victim. Rossi and I will go to the first victim’s rehearsal dinner space. See if we can get anything on the security footage,” Hotch told them. “Addison, stay here to work on victimology and Reid work on the geographical profile.”
When Jane and Spencer were alone again, Jane decided to mention her observation.
“Spencer, what’s going on inside your head? You’ve been quiet since we talked to the last fiancé.”
“I’m fine,” he replied tersely, keeping his focus on the map of the city in front of him.
“Spence,” Jane warned, knowing it was a lie.
“Don't worry about it, alright?”
Jane sighed and turned back to her own task. “OK.”
An hour or so later, Garcia got back to them and let them know that she had struck out again, but would now work on analyzing the footage sent to her.
While they still didn’t know the connection, they had enough information to deliver a profile before calling it a night.
The team went out to eat before heading back to the hotel to get some rest. While at dinner, Jane kept catching Spencer staring at her.
“Are you sure you’re alright?” Jane asked him again, crawling into bed and laying her head down on his chest.
Instead of answering, he just pulled her closer, cuddling her until they fell asleep.
~
In the morning, they got back to work on the case.
“I can’t find where the brides disappear to in the footage,” Garcia informed the team. “They go out of view of the camera and never come back.”
Late morning, another man received a call from his bride calling off their wedding that was exactly like the first two.
They spoke with him and the rest of the wedding party only to receive the same information as the first two victims’ wedding parties.
The team continued working until an idea came to Jane.
“I think I know what we’re missing,” she stated, turning to her co-workers. “We don’t know what happens after the victim leaves the rehearsal dinner. Next, we hear from them when they call the groom, and then the bodies show up the next morning on the church steps in their wedding dress.”
Everyone stared at her, unsure what her point was.
"Who brings their wedding dress to a rehearsal dinner?” she asked. “They must have to go to the church to pick it up. The church also has security cameras on the inside.”
“We need that footage,” Morgan stated.
They moved fast to get the footage and managed to find a common vehicle at all three. Once Garcia ran the plate number, they were able to get a name and address for the UNSUB.
“Carl Wilkinson. Looks like he used to be in a long-term relationship... he was left at the alter,” Garcia told the team.
“He wants others to feel how he felt getting the love of his life taken from him,” Reid stated.
“He went on a long rant on Facebook about how she’d called him the morning of. He even posted the transcript of the call.” She paused. “You guys, it’s verbatim what he makes his victims read.”
“What happened to his ex-fiancé?” Rossi asked.
“She recently got married to someone else.”
“That’s the trigger,” Morgan said.
“Address is sent. Go, my pretties, go!”
The team rushed to the home of Wilkinson where he was keeping his latest victim and managed to talk him down, saving the bride.
~~~
Friday, September 17th.
Jane went grocery shopping on her own after work. When she arrived home, she was surprised to find Spencer and her brother hanging out together.
“Jack, hi! What are you doing here?” she asked, greeting him with a hug.
“Just keeping Spencer company while you were out running errands. Do you want to hang out tomorrow?” he suggested.
“Sure, if that’s alright with Spencer.” She looked past Jack towards her boyfriend.
“That’s fine. Morgan mentioned wanting to hang out tomorrow anyway.”
~
The next day while Jane and Jack hung out at Jack’s place, Spencer drove up to Jane’s parents’ place. He needed to talk to her father in person.
The last case they’d been on really made him start thinking about life and how he wanted to spend forever with Jane by his side. He’d made up his mind. He was going to ask her to marry him. He just needed her father’s permission first. He spoke to Jack about it the night before and Jack was happy to help keep Jane busy for the day.
After he finished talking with Mr. Addison, he drove back home and met up with Morgan to go ring shopping.
~
Jane and Jack were playing a card game when she received a call from JJ.
“Hey, JJ, what’s up?”
“Hey, Jane. Can Henry spend the night over at yours and Spence’s apartment?”  the blonde asked her.
“Of course! What time do you need to drop him off by?”
“I was kind of hoping now?” JJ chuckled.
“Alright. Um, I’m at Jack’s but I can head home now and meet you there. I’m not sure if Spencer’s home but I should be there shortly.”
“You’re the best! I’ll see you soon!”
Jane hung up and turned to Jack. “JJ needs a sitter for Henry so I have to go,” she explained. “I’ll talk to you later, alright?”
“Alright.” Jack stood with her and gave her a hug before helping her gather her stuff and walking her out. After she left, he quickly called Spencer, warning him that she was on her way.
~
Spencer and Morgan had just arrived back to the apartment when they received Jack’s call.
“She’ll be home soon. Can you take care of the ring for me so she doesn’t find it?” Spencer asked Morgan.
“Of course,” he accepted, taking the ring and pocketing it.
“Thank you for all your help.”
“I’m glad to help. Congrats in advance, man!”
Morgan started walking to the door to head home when they heard a knock come from the other side. Morgan opened it and was greeted by Henry and JJ.
“Hey there, kid!” Morgan cheered.
“Hi!”
“Come on in, guys!” Spencer told the pair. “Jane should be home soon.”
“I’m right here! Hi, bud!” Jane called out, entering the apartment shortly after JJ and Henry.
“Aunty Jane!” Henry ran over to her and she stooped down to hug him.
“How are you? Are you ready to have fun tonight?”
“Yeah!”
“I’m going to head out. I’ll see you guys on Monday,” Morgan told everyone.
“Yeah, I need to go too. Will is waiting in the car,” JJ stated. She gave Henry a hug and kiss goodbye.
“Bye, guys!” Jane and Spencer called as JJ and Morgan headed out.
“Movies?” Henry asked almost immediately, causing the two adults to chuckle.
“I need to eat first. Have you had dinner Henry?” Spencer asked. He nodded.
“I ate at Jack’s,” Jane informed them. “Henry, why don’t we get changed into PJs and pick out a movie while we wait for Spencer to eat?”
Henry nodded excitedly and followed Jane down the hall.
After watching a movie, Henry asked if they could watch another. They compromised with an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, saying it was too late to watch another full movie. The three of them all ended up falling asleep on the couch.
~~~
In the morning, JJ came over to pick Henry up. When no one answered the door, she found her spare key and let herself in, figuring they were still asleep.
She smiled when she found the three all cuddled up, sleeping on the couch. Pulling out her phone, she took a few pictures to send to Garcia before gently nudging them awake.
“Good morning,” JJ greeted.
“JJ, hey. Sorry, we must’ve fallen asleep here and didn’t have an alarm set to get up for the morning,” Jane apologized.
“It’s alright. Did you have fun, Henry?” she asked her son. He nodded sleepily.
“Henry, why don’t we go get dressed before you go home?” Jane suggested.
He agreed and she took him to go get dressed. As soon as she was out of the room, Spencer sat up and stretched his arms before saying, “Can I get your advice on something? You have to go promise not to say anything to Jane.”
JJ glanced towards the doorway before replying, “Of course. What is it?”
“I’m going to ask Jane to marry me,” he told her. JJ grinned but remained quiet, not wanting Jane to hear. “I was thinking about doing it on her birthday next week. What do you think?”
JJ frowned and shook her head. “The day you get engaged is its own special day. It shouldn’t be done on a day that’s already special,” she told him.
Spencer nodded. “Alright, great. Thanks. I’ll wait until the weekend after then.”
~~~
Monday morning, Jane grew suspicious about what was going on. She noticed people having whispered conversations with Spencer, but had no idea why they felt the need to be so quiet.
In the afternoon, a new case came in that took them to Ohio. The press was calling the UNSUB ‘The Van Gogh Killer’ because he was cutting off their ears and keeping them as souvenirs.
~
Wednesday, September 22nd.
For Jane’s birthday this year, the team made sure it was much different from last year in which they’d pretended to forget it was her special day. Despite still being on the case, everyone showered her with birthday wishes and made plans to celebrate after the case was over.
“I’m sorry that you’re having to spend your birthday working on a case,” Spencer apologized when they got back to the hotel that night. They had yet to catch the UNSUB, but were ordered to call it a night, get some rest, and start fresh in the morning.
Jane shrugged as she crawled into bed. “It’s part of the job. Sometimes it lands on a birthday or holiday, but there’s not much we can do about it.”
Spencer climbed in under the sheets next to her and pulled her close, giving her a gentle kiss. “You know I love you, right?” he asked when he pulled back, resting his forehead against hers.
“Of course, Spence,” she assured him. “I love you too.” She reached up and pulled his lips back to hers again.
“Happy birthday, Janey,” he whispered in between kisses. When he moved down to start kissing her neck, she let out a groan. She allowed herself to enjoy it for a moment before gently pushing him back.
“Spence, we’re on a case,” she pointed out.
“But it’s your birthday. Surely, we can make an exception,” he countered. She giggled. He moved back to kissing her neck. This time, she didn’t stop it.
“Just don’t leave any marks. We don’t need the team teasing us in the morning,” she laughed.
~
The case lasted until the end of the next day. After finishing up, they flew back home and had a paperwork day to end their work week.
At the end of the day, Spencer quickly went over to speak with Morgan while Jane was off with Garcia.
“Do you have it?” he asked.
“Right here, pretty boy,” Morgan answered, pulling the small box out of his desk. Spencer took it from him and quickly pocketed it before Jane could see it. “You got it all planned out?”
“Yeah, I think so,” Spencer told him, nodding.
Morgan put a hand on his shoulder. “Relax, man. It’s going to go great.”
Before he could respond, Jane and Garcia entered the bullpen and approached them.
“Hey, ready to go home?” Jane asked him.
“Yeah, sure. Let me grab my bag.” He went to his desk and gathered his things before returning to Janes side, taking her hand, and walking with her towards the elevators. When he glanced back over his shoulder, he saw Morgan and Garcia grinning at them, excited for what was to come.
Bless The Broken Road - 28
Tuesday, June 29th.
Jane, Spencer, Morgan, and JJ were at Jane’s desk, talking and messing around.
Hotch approached the group, letting them know they had a case.
Jane’s demeanor instantly changed. Her body tensed and she remained in her seat while everyone else followed Hotch’s order to head to the briefing room.
Hotch noticed the change and put a hand on her shoulder.
“If you need to stay here for a case, that’s ok,” he told her.
Jane looked up at him before turning to look away with a sigh. “I need a moment to think about it.”
“Just let me know.”
He walked away to the briefing room, leaving her alone to debate what she should do. The last few weeks had been rough. Every case seemed to have at least one detail in common to the case on which she’d been abducted last year. Said detail brought up terrifying memories and flashbacks. It made it hard to go into cases without fearing that more memories would come back to her. Maybe it would do her good to sit out a case.
Jane waited for the briefing to end before informing Hotch of her decision.
“Garcia will update you on all of the information and you can help her from here,” he stated.
“Sir, yes sir,” Garcia spoke. Jane followed her to the roundtable room.
The case was in Boise, Idaho. Someone was abducting and torturing women before killing them and disposing of their bodies. Jane’s mind flashed back to the similar pictures that had been shown on her case.
“Jane? Did you hear anything I just said?” Garcia asked as Jane blinked and shook her head, bringing herself back to the present.
“I changed my mind. I’m going with on this case,” Jane stated, getting up and rushing to grab her go bag before Garcia could say anything.
She managed to catch up with the rest of the team at the jet before they took off.
“Addison, you’ve decided to come,” Hotch stated as she put her bag above the seats. “Are you sure about this?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” she insisted, taking a seat next to Spencer. He gave her a questioning look but she told him, “I’m fine.”
~
Throughout the case, Jane continued to have flashbacks. She projected her anger for the man who had tortured her towards the UNSUB.
Near the end of the case, Morgan and Jane were driving together in one of the SUVs when Garcia called them with the UNSUB’s address. She told the pair that the rest of the team was on their way. As they were the closest to the house, they arrived first.
“We should wait for backup,” Morgan told her. Jane ignored him and jumped out of the vehicle, heading towards the door. “Wait, Jane!” he called after her.
Jane entered the house and found the UNSUB in the living room, holding a knife to the victim’s throat.
“You don’t want to do this,” Jane told him.
“I think I do,” he insisted. “I’m already going away, what’s one more kill?”
Jane tried to get him to drop the knife but saw there was no way to convince him. The sound of the other vehicles arriving distracted him for a moment and she was about to shoot him, saving the girl.
Upon hearing shots fired, Morgan came running in. He helped Jane get the girl out to the ambulance. Once she was getting treated, Jane stepped away.
Reid came running up to her. “Are you ok?” he asked.
“I’m fine.”
“Why did you run in without backup? You could’ve been killed!” he yelled.
“Well, I wasn’t,” she replied defensively.
“What were you thinking?” she stayed silent. “Jane?”
Her mind slipped into a flashback of her and her torturer fighting. She watched it happen all over again. Him slamming her head against the wall. The gun he pressed against her temple. All of it.
Spencer watched her as all of these thoughts went through her mind. He saw that she was on the verge of tears and took her hand.
“Come on, let’s go home,” he told her.
Jane slept on the plane ride home, curling up against Spencer. He kept his arms wrapped tight around her as if he could protect her from her own nightmares.
Upon arrival back to the BAU, Garcia ran up to Jane and hugged her tight. “I heard what happened. I was worried sick! Don’t you dare scare me like that again!”
“Jane, can I please speak with you in my office for a minute?” Hotch interrupted.
Garcia let go of her and Jane stepped back, looking at everyone before agreeing and following Hotch.
After they’d shut the door behind them, they took up seats on opposite sides of his desk.
“What you did today was reckless,” Hotch stated.
“We didn’t have time to wait for backup. I had to go in to save her,” Jane argued.
“What makes you so sure?” Jane remained silent, not wanting to give an answer. “Based on your recent behavior, I’ve decided to order you a psych evaluation for tomorrow morning. Depending on the results, I may have to pull you out of the field for a while.”
Jane shook her head. “I’m not crazy.”
“Of course you’re not. You just need help.”
Jane stood up and exited the office without another word.
Spencer was waiting for her by his desk. He got up when he saw her walk out.
“Let’s go home,” Jane told him as she passed by, heading to her own desk.
“What happened?” she asked, following her.
She grabbed a few things that she had left at her desk before the case and turned back to him. “Let’s just go!”
He gave up trying to get any more information out of her and followed her to the elevator.
When they entered the apartment, Shortstack greeted them happily. Jane dropped her stuff off by the door and headed straight to the bedroom, letting Shortie follow her in before shutting the door, shutting Spencer out.
Spencer went to open the door only to find that she’d locked it. “Jane, please let me in. What happened?”
On the other side, Jane sat on the bed, staring at the door.
“Please, Janey,” he called.
She sighed and got up to unlock it. She opened the door before walking away and climbing onto the bed, letting Shortstack jump up to sit in her lap.
Spencer moved to sit next to her and she leaned into him.
“Please tell me what happened,” he whispered.
“Hotch ordered me a psych eval for tomorrow morning. I’m not allowed back into the field until I’m better.” She put air quotes around the word ‘better’.
“What you did was dangerous and reckless. I was afraid I might lose you,” he admitted. “Why’d you do it?”
Jane took a moment before speaking. “I was thinking about when I got abducted how I wouldn’t have survived if you and the rest of the team hadn’t gotten there when you did. I didn’t want that girl to die while Morgan and I were right outside.”
Spencer kissed the top of her head and wrapped an arm around her. “It’ll be alright. You just need some time to recover from what happened.”
“It was over six months ago,” Jane countered.
“Sometimes PTSD-” “Stop,” she cut him off, tensing up.
“Jane, it’s pretty clear that you’re showing the signs of-”
“Don’t! I don’t want to know a million facts about it, OK?!”
“OK,” he replied quietly. “What do you want me to do then?”
“Just... stay with me.”
“OK, I can do that.”
The three of them stayed cuddled up like that for the rest of the night until it was time to go to bed.
~ The next morning, Jane took her psych eval and was diagnosed with PTSD. They set up counseling sessions for her to attend, starting on Monday, and required that she only worked cases from Quantico until she was determined to be better by another psych eval.
“Think of a this as a good thing,” Spencer told her, trying to console her.
Jane looked up at him standing by her desk. “How is this a good thing?”
“Maybe taking time away from the field and talking with a counselor will help you feel better,” he suggested.
Jane sighed and looked back down at her desk. “Maybe.”
“We have a case,” Garcia announced, coming by her desk.
They dropped their conversation and followed her to the briefing room.
After the briefing, Spencer gave her a kiss and hug goodbye. “It’ll all be alright,” he whispered in her ear as he embraced her.
“I love you. Stay safe,” she told him before he headed out to the jet.
The team worked the case through the weekend, Jane assisting Garcia in her lab. When they arrived back early afternoon on Monday, Jane was in her counseling session.
When she was done, she was met at her desk by Spencer, who stood up right away and embraced her. “Hi,” he spoke into her hair.
“Hi,” she repeated. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too. How did counseling go?” he asked, stepping back to look at her.
She shrugged. “It went alright. It’ll take some getting used to,” she told him.
~~~
Thursday, August 12th.
The team was just nearing the end of a case in Baltimore. Garcia had sent the team the address of the house the UNSUB was located at, meaning that she and Jane should be done on their end for the case. They both moved to gather their things so that they could head home upon word that the UNSUB was arrested. Jane was just zipping up her bag when Garcia received a phone call.
“Garcia,” Morgan spoke as soon as she answered and put him on speaker. “I need everything you can give me on a Darius Marshall.”
“Who’s that? We thought the case was over?” Garcia asked.
“We didn’t profile a partner. The original UNSUB ran out of the house and I chased him but the partner was in another room. He came out and surprised us,” he explained.
“Morgan, what happened?” Jane asked, sensing there was something else.
“He caught Reid by surprise...”
Jane closed her eyes. “Derek.”
“They got in a fight. Hotch came in to shoot the second UNSUB.”
“Derek, please.”
“Reid’s in the hospital. He got beat up pretty bad,” he finally told them.
Jane stood immediately, picking up her bag. “I’m on my way.”
“Wait, hey now girl wonder, you don’t have to do that,” Morgan called after her.
She paused and turned back toward the phone. “Spencer’s hurt. Of course I have to.”
“He’s going to be fine. The doctor just wants to keep him overnight to make sure.”
“I don't care, I'm coming anyway. I'll see you in an hour.”
Jane headed to her car and drove up to Baltimore by herself. Garcia needed to stay behind and help the team find the UNSUB.
When she got to the hospital, the doctor reiterated what Morgan had already told her. Spencer was fine, just under observation for the night. She headed to his room and was greeted by Morgan.
“Hey, ladybug,” he greeted her.
“Hey, how’s he doing?” Jane asked, accepting his hug.
“He’s fine. Just resting right now,” he told her. “I have to get back to the team. I’ll check in later.”
“Alright. Thank you for staying with him until I got here,” she told him before he left.
Jane set her bag down and took a seat next to Spencer’s bed. Just as she was settling in, he began to wake up. Jane leaned forward in her chair and took his hand.
“Jane? What are you doing here?” he asked, his voice groggy from sleep.
“Morgan called me. He told me you were hurt so I drove up here to see you,” she explained. “How are you feeling?”
“I’m OK. Just sore.”
“Where’s it hurt?” she asked.
“My head, ribs, legs...” he trailed off.
“How are your lips?”
“My lips are fine?” he told her, answering in the form of a question.
She smirked and said, “Good,” before leaning in and kissing him.
Late that night, the team was able to catch the UNSUB and head back home. Jane stayed the night in the hospital with Spencer and planned to drive back with him in the morning. Hotch gave the pair the next day off in order to recover.

Bless The Broken Road - 27
The next morning, Jane gave Jack a call to fill him in on what was going on.
“Hey, Jack-”
“Jane! Thank god! You never came home last night. I was worried!” Jack exclaimed as soon as he answered her call.
“Relax, I’m fine,” she assured him. “It’s kind of a long story, but I ended up at Spencer’s last night and we got back together.”
“Seriously?! Jane, that’s great!” he cheered.
“Yeah, I know,” she agreed, smiling.
“Do you think you’ll move back in right away? I’m free tomorrow to help.”
“That’d be great, Jack. I’m planning on coming over to grab some things at some point today. I’ll see you later.”
She hung up and returned to the living room, curling back up on the couch next to Spencer. She’d need to get some of her hygiene items like shampoo, etc. as well as a change of clothes later. For the time being, Spencer let her borrow one of his shirts to lounge in.
“Jack offered to help move my stuff back here tomorrow,” she informed him, resting her head on his shoulder and wrapping an arm around his torso.
“Are you sure you want to move back in so soon? I’d understand if you wanted to take more time,” Spencer said, reaching around to wrap his own arm around her.
“I’m sure. This way, we can pretend the last three weeks and two days never happened.”
He kissed the top of her head. “Sounds like a great idea,” he told her.
~~~
On Monday morning, there was no one in the bullpen when Jane and Spencer arrived, meaning there was no one to notice that they had arrived at the same time.
They spent the morning working on paperwork at their own desks, therefore nobody suspected anything had changed between them.
Around mid-morning, Garcia came over to Jane’s desk.
“Jane, I am so sorry about Friday! I shouldn’t have pushed you so hard to go out and I definitely shouldn’t have set you up with someone I’ve never met personally and-” she paused in her apology, examining Jane’s face. “You don’t seem that mad anymore.”
Jane laughed and shook her head. “I’m not mad. It’s alright, Penny.”
The blonde stood there, perplexed by her friend’s happier mood. She hadn’t seen her like this in weeks. “What happened after you hung up on me Friday?”
To answer her question, Spencer came over, placing a fresh mug of coffee on Jane’s desk.
Jane’s eyes brightened even more. “Thank you!” she cheered. He bent down and gave her a peck on the lips before turning to look at Garcia. Both of them couldn’t help but smirk at the look on her face.
“What? Are- are you two- Are you two back together?” She finally spat out.
The two smiled and nodded before sharing a look.
Garcia let out a shriek, gathering the attention of the others in the area. “Oh, this is so exciting! I am so happy! This is the best thing ever!”
“What’s going on, baby girl?” Morgan asked as he and JJ decided to get up from their desks and join the conversation. He looked to Jane and Spencer and his brow furrowed. “Hold on, did you two make up?”
“Yes, they did!” Garcia cheered.
Both Spencer and Jane laughed at their friends' excitement.
“That’s great! Good job, man!” Morgan gave Spencer a brotherly punch in the arm.
“That’s so good to hear!” JJ cheered.
“Thanks, you guys! We should probably all get back to work, though,” Jane told them.
They all agreed, repeating their congratulations one more time before walking off.
Jane smiled to herself as she returned to the file she was working on.
It was like one second she was reading the file and the next her mind flashed back to that dreaded basement again.
“Jane!” Spencer broke her out of it. He’d come back over to say one more thing before he went back to work. Jane shook her head and looked up at him standing next to her desk. “Are you alright?” he asked.
Before they could talk about it, Hotch had come out of his office to tell them a case had come in.
Jane stood and brushed past Spencer to head to the briefing room.
~~~
The team was able to solve the case and return back home in time for the weekend.
In the middle of the night on Friday, Jane was woken up by a nightmare. She slipped out from under the covers, making sure not to disturb Spencer, and silently tiptoed to the bathroom. Taking a seat on the bathroom floor, she silently cried and tried to calm down.
~
The next morning, Jane was still tired so they decided to devote the day to watching movies.
That night, more nightmares came.
Spencer was the first to wake on Sunday morning. He got up and got breakfast ready while Jane continued to sleep. Just as he was turning off the stove, he heard her screaming coming from the bedroom.
Spencer ran into the bedroom and rushed to her side. She was still asleep but was screaming and thrashing around in her sleep. He tried to gently wake her. When her eyes flashed open, there was a moment in which she didn’t realize where she was, as if she was still inside her nightmare and he was her abductor. Jane shoved him away.
“Jane!” he called out.
The sound of his voice brought her back to reality.
“Spencer, I’m so sorry!” she apologized immediately. She sat up and hugged her knees to her chest.
"That’s alright. You didn’t mean it.” He moved to sit next to her. “Jane, I know you’ve been having nightmares again, along with some other stuff,” he told her softly.
She sat there, saying nothing.
“I think you need to talk to someone. It doesn’t have to be me, but I think you need help.”
“No I don’t,” she denied, though tears came to her eyes.
"It takes time, but it’ll only get better if you face it rather than ignore it.”
Jane remained silent, her eyes focused on something only she could see off in the distance.
“I made breakfast. Why don’t we go eat?” Spencer suggested, changing the subject.
She nodded and allowed him to take her hand, help her out of bed, and lead her to the kitchen.
~~~
Tuesday, June 15.
“I’m going to run some errands and grab lunch. I’ll see you later,” Spencer informed Jane.
Jane spun in her chair to look at him as he moved to walk away. “Well, wait! Do you want me to come with you?” she offered.
“Not this time. I want to go alone,” he told her. “I’ll be back in a bit.”
Jane stared at him as he walked away, thinking it was a little suspicious but chose to ignore it.
An hour later, Garcia and Jane were having a conversation at Jane’s desk.
“Woah,” Garcia exclaimed randomly.
Jane raised an eyebrow. “Um, woah what?”
Spencer approached from behind Jane and cleared his throat. She spun around in her chair and her eyes widened. Spencer had traded in his ‘boy band’ haircut for a much shorter style.
“Spencer, wow!” Jane spoke.
His cheeks went red and he looked down, scratching his neck, embarrassed. “You hate it,” he said.
“What? No! It’s just different,” Jane insisted. “But it looks really, really good.”
“It does?”
“Yes! Right, Pen?”
“Uh...yeah! Totally!” Garcia cheered. “You, boy genius, are one tall drink of water.”
Jane got up from her seat. “I’m going to go grab more coffee from the break room. Spence, do you want some?”
“That sounds great!” he agreed, going to grab his cup from his own desk before following Jane to the break room.
“See ya, Garcia!” Jane said as the tech analyst also left Jane’s desk and broke off from the group.
The room was empty when they entered. Jane moved to the counter and began brewing the coffee.
“I’m serious, Spence. Your hair looks great! It’s so sexy,” she told him, turning around to face him, leaning against the counter.
He smiled at her, speechless.
Jane pulled him closer to her and lowered her voice to say, “I cannot wait to get you home and all alone tonight.”
She pulled his face down to hers and kissed him, running her hands through his new, short hair.
The door to the break room opened and Garcia entered, causing them to jump apart.
“Thought I’d warn you that Rossi is coming this way,” she told the pair with a wink.
“Thanks, Garcia,” they murmured. They hurried to get their coffee refilled before heading back to their desks and getting back to their files.
Every once in a while, Jane would glance up toward Spencer. More than once, he caught her staring at him, biting her lip. Upon seeing this, he’d turn red and look away again.
At one point, Jane decided to gather up the files she’d finished so far and go turn them into Hotch in his office. On the way back to her desk, Jane passed Spencer’s desk, reaching out to brush her hand across his head. When she returned to her desk, she looked back at him and smirked before shooting him a wink and going back to work. He chuckled to himself before also going back to work.
Upon arrival home from work, Spencer took Shortstack outside and Jane began to work on cooking dinner. When it was ready, they sat down and ate, making small talk and forcing themselves to remain patient.
They finished eating and worked together to get the dishes washed and put away. Jane put the last plate in the cabinet and shut the door before turning and smiling at Spencer.
She took his hand and guided him back to the bedroom, shutting the door after them.
~
Spencer woke up the next morning to Jane kissing his lips. He smiled under the kiss, causing her to pull away to look at him. He opened his own eyes to see her leaning over him slightly, smiling down at him.
“Good morning,” she greeted.
He reached up and kissed her again. “Good morning.”
Jane laid back down to rest her head on his chest. “Ugh, I don’t want to go to work today,” she complained.
“We could probably call in if you really wanted to,” he suggested.
“No,” she shook her head slightly. “We better get up and get ready.” She moved to sit up and slip out of bed, the cool air creating goosebumps on her bare skin. Spencer sat up and watched her. “I’ll go shower first,” she told him, heading into the bathroom.
Jane had just finished rinsing out her shampoo and was about to begin rubbing conditioner in her hair when she heard the bathroom door open and close.
“I took Shortstack out to go to the bathroom and gave him his food,” Spencer’s voice called over the sound of the water.
“Good.” She stopped rubbing her hair and pulled the curtain back a bit so she could see him.
“You know,” she began with a smirk. “We could probably get ready faster if we just showered at the same time,” she suggested.
Spencer grinned and stripped his clothes back off before stepping into the shower with her. Jane grabbed his shampoo from the corner and put some on her hand before reaching up to rub it in his hair. He had to bend down slightly for her to reach it properly. Unable to resist the temptation, she leaned forward and kissed him.
~
Needless to say, showering together proved to be counterproductive for the couple, causing them to arrive at work around forty-five minutes late.
As Jane sat at her desk working on paperwork, she couldn’t help but notice a few of the others gathered over at Morgan’s desk, talking in hushed voices and laughing occasionally.
Jane chose to ignore it and continued to work.
A while later, Morgan came over to her. “Hey, sweetness,” he greeted with a grin.
“Hey,” she replied back. “Why are you smiling at me like that?”
“No reason,” he chuckled, walking away before she could interrogate him further.
People continued glancing at her throughout the next few hours until Garcia finally decided to end the teasing and take her into the bathroom.
“Garcia, you couldn’t have just told me out there?” Jane complained as the door closed behind them.
“No, I couldn’t,” Garcia argued. “Look at your neck.” She gestured to the mirror and Jane obliged, gasping in realization as to why everyone was behaving the way they were. There was a very obvious hickey on the front of her neck.
“I guess someone had a good time last night,” Garcia giggled as she handed Jane some concealer to help her cover it up.
Jane shook her head. “This wasn’t here this morning.”
“So when did you get it?” Jane hesitated to answer, but Garcia figured it out in the moment of silence. “Oh!” she exclaimed. “Is that why you two were late?”
“Maybe...”
“Oh, it so is!”
Jane finished with the makeup and handed it back to Garcia. “Thanks for telling me but I don’t think we should continue this discussion.”
She turned and hurried out of the bathroom, a bit embarrassed.
Later in the day, Spencer apologized to Jane about the situation. “I didn’t mean for you to get embarrassed,” he told her.
“That’s alright. It’s too late to change anything now,” she assured him. “We’ll just be extra careful next time.”
Hotch entered the bullpen and announced that there was a case.
The case lasted a few days and fortunately helped distract the team from being able to tease Jane and Spencer anymore.
~~~~~
Sunday, June 20th.
Spencer woke up and followed the smell of pancakes out to the kitchen where he found Jane cooking.
“Good morning!” she chirped, taking another pancake off of the frying pan and placing it on the stack. Before pouring more batter to make the next one, she moved over to Spencer, reaching up to plant a kiss on his lips. “Happy one year anniversary!”
He wrapped his arms around her waist, keeping her close. “Happy one year anniversary to you too,” he repeated with a wide smile.
Around a week ago, the couple had decided to not count the near month that they had spent broken up and therefore would still consider June 20th to be their anniversary.
“I’m making pancakes!” Jane said as she broke away from him and went to continue making breakfast.
“I see that,” he chuckled.
“I think I have enough batter left to make two more and then I’ll be done. Go sit down.”
Spencer obliged and Jane joined him a few minutes later.
After breakfast, Jane received a call from Garcia.
“Hey, Penelope!”
“Hey! I was wondering if you wanted to join me in shopping at the mall today?” she asked.
“Oh, not today, Pen,” Jane told her. “It’s Spencer and I’s first anniversary. Maybe next weekend or something?”
“I was really hoping to go today!” the blonde insisted.
“No, I’m sorry. I gotta go.” Jane hung up and returned back to the living room. “That was Garcia. She wanted me to go shopping with her,” Jane informed Spencer.
“You should go,” he told her.
Her brow furrowed. “You want me to spend our anniversary shopping with Garcia?” she questioned.
“Yeah.”
“Don’t you want to spend it together?” Jane crossed her arms.
“I do, but you and Garcia haven’t had time to hang out in a while and we live together. We can celebrate later,” Spencer insisted.
“OK...” Jane gave in, suspicious. “I’ll call her back then.”
Jane spent the entire day shopping with Garcia.
Garcia guided Jane to a specific store and encouraged her to get a specific dress, telling her that she would pay for it for her.
“Garcia, it’s beautiful, but I can’t ask you to buy it for me! It’s way too expensive,” Jane argued.
“But if you get it, then we could go back to my place and you can put it on and I can help you do your hair and makeup all nice to surprise Spencer with!”
Jane narrowed her eyes at her. “OK, what’s going on?”
“Nothing’s going on,” Garcia lied.
“Garcia, you know I can tell when you’re lying.”
Garcia groaned, “Fine. Spencer’s preparing a fancy dinner for you back home and Morgan and Rossi are helping him. He asked me to keep you busy all day and he gave me money to buy this dress for you.”
“Oh my god, that’s so sweet!” Jane exclaimed.
“I guess I have to let him know the surprise is ruined.”
“Well, don’t tell me any more details. That way I can be partially surprised,” Jane suggested.
They found the dress in Jane’s size and purchased it before heading back to Garcia’s to get Jane ready for the dinner.
Right around six, Jane arrived home. She opened the door to find a trail of rose petals on the ground and Shortstack sitting in front of her with a little bowtie on.
“Well don’t you look handsome,” Jane laughed, setting her stuff aside and kneeling down to greet the pup. Shortstack barked and turned to walk towards the balcony, the same direction as the trail of rose petals.
Out on the balcony, Spencer stood by a table with candles and flowers on it. He was wearing a tux.
“Happy anniversary,” he told her, coming forward to give her a kiss. “I love you so much, Jane.”
“I love you too, Spencer. I can’t believe you did all of this for me!” she told him, embracing him before he took a step back to take in her attire.
“You look so beautiful,” he told her.
Jane blushed. “You look great too. Thank you for buying the dress for me. Garcia’s not a very good liar,” Jane chuckled.
“You’re very welcome. Shall we?” he gestured toward the table and she moved forward to one of the chairs. Spencer pulled it out for her before walking around to his own chair.
“The food looks delicious. Did you make this?” Jane asked.
“With Rossi’s help,” he admitted. “I figured I’d learn from an Italian food expert.” Jane laughed. “Morgan helped too with setting things up.”
“Remind me to thank both of them,” she said as she went to take her first bite.
“How was your day with Garcia?” he asked, also digging in.
“It was fun, but I missed you. This is lovely and I really appreciate the effort you put into it, but I felt guilty spending our anniversary away from you,” Jane admitted.
“Don’t. It was all part of the plan,” he insisted. “Wine?” he asked as he grabbed the bottle.
“Yes, please.” Jane held out her glass and he poured both of them a glass before raising his. Jane mimicked him. “To one year of being together,” she began. “It wasn’t all full of happiness, but it was all worth it because, in the end, I get to be with you. I love you.”
“I love you too,” Spencer repeated back. “Cheers.” They clinked their glasses.

Bless The Broken Road - 26
The next morning, Morgan slipped out of Jane’s room to return to his own. On the way back, he passed Reid.
“Were you just in Jane’s room?” he questioned.
Morgan looked back to the door and then at Reid. “Yeah, uh, I heard her screaming last night and went to check on her. She’s having nightmares again and she didn’t want to be alone,” Morgan explained. Reid nodded solemnly.
When they arrived back at the BAU, everyone was free to go, as it was a Saturday.
Jane dropped some paperwork off at her desk before heading toward the elevators. Before she could leave, however, her path was blocked by Garcia.
“Oh no, you can’t leave yet. You have some explaining to do,” the blonde told her, wagging a finger in her face.
“Penny, I’m exhausted. I just want to go home,” Jane insisted.
“Oh come on! Pleaseeee! I’ve been waiting for you all day! Why else would I come in on a Saturday?”
Jane groaned and ran a hand through her hair. “Fine, but I’m not talking here,” Jane gave in, glancing over towards Reid. “You’re taking me to lunch.”
Garcia cheered and clapped. “Yay! My treat!”
Half an hour later, they sat at a restaurant.
“So tell me what happened during that undercover mission,” Garcia questioned.
“I did my job of pretending to be a stripper and we caught the UNSUB before she could hurt anyone else,” Jane summed up.
Garcia scoffed. “You know that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about what happened with you and Reid in the private booth!”
“We had to stay in character, Garcia. The only reason it lasted so long was that we had to wait for you to tell us we were clear of cameras. Why did it take so long, by the way?” she asked, turning the questioning around to her.
"I didn’t want to interrupt,” Garcia smirked. “But come on. You can’t tell me that that was all acting. I could hear the noises the two of you were making.”
Jane’s cheeks turned red and she looked away for a moment. When she looked back at her companion, she said, “It doesn’t matter. He hates me now.”
“Well maybe you should start seeing someone new,” Garcia suggested.
Jane shook her head. “You know I’m not the type to do the rebound thing for the sake of rebounding if I’m not over him yet.”
“At least give it a shot! You don’t have to sleep with the guy. Just go out for dinner or see a movie or something!”
“I’m not ready yet, ok?” Jane insisted.
Garcia conceded, dropping the subject.
After lunch, Jane headed home to Jack’s apartment. As she walked through the parking lot to the entrance of the complex, she noticed a truck that looked familiar. It was the exact same kind as the one she had been abducted in. She ran inside, slamming the door to the apartment shut and sliding down to sit against it, breathing heavily.
Images flashed rapidly through her mind. Being hit with a shovel. Blacking out. Coming to and seeing she was in the back of a truck. Blacking out again and waking up tied to a chair.
Jack came in from the other room, rushing to her side when he noticed the state she was in.
“Jane? Jane, what’s wrong?! Jane!”
It took her a minute to come back to reality and realize Jack was kneeling in front of her.
“Jack?” she spoke, working on getting her breathing back to normal. “What are you doing home in the middle of the afternoon? I thought you had to work this weekend?”
“It was a slow news day so I convinced them to let me come home since I knew you’d be coming back today,” he explained.
“Oh. Well, I’m sorry, but all I feel like doing right now is taking a shower and going to bed.”
“That’s alright,” he told her, still giving her a concerned look. “Why don’t you sleep in the bedroom? I won’t be needing it until tonight anyway.”
“Thank you,” she told him as she stood up. She grabbed a change of clothes and took a shower. Afterward, Jane crawled into bed, Shortstack jumping up to cuddle with her.
~
Jane stayed in bed for nearly 24 hours, finally getting up to eat something early afternoon of the next day.
“Jane?” Jack spoke from his seat in the chair next to her spot on the couch.
“Hmm?”
“I’m worried about you. I think you should see about getting some help,” he said tentatively.
“I don’t want help.”
“That’s how I used to feel too. But when I finally went to talk to a therapist, it really did help. I think it’d help you too.”
“You know what? I think maybe some fresh air would help,” Jane stated, getting up. She went and changed into a new set of clothes before heading towards the door, leaving all her things behind. “I’ll be back later.”
She headed out the door and started walking, ending up at the park that wasn’t too far away from the apartment. After walking around for a while, she caught sight of some familiar faces up ahead.
“Aunty Jane!” Henry yelled, letting go of his mother’s hand to run over to her.
“Henry! Hi!” Jane cheered, stooping down to embrace him. “It’s so good to see you!”
“We thought we’d enjoy the nice weather and play at the park today,” JJ told her as she and Will caught up with their son.
“Well do you want me to go play with you on the slides, Henry?” Jane asked.
“Yeah!” he cheered.
“OK, let’s go!”
They headed off to the slides. Jane would go down first then be at the bottom to catch Henry. Sometimes they would go down together. After a while, they moved to the swing and Jane pushed Henry on them. The pair played for a good half hour before Will took over for Jane and she went to sit by JJ on a bench.
“I don’t mean this to be offensive, Jane, but you look terrible,” JJ told her younger colleague and friend after they had been talking for a while.
Jane turned her head away, crossing her arms and letting out a sigh. “I’m fine. I just haven’t been sleeping enough lately,” she insisted.
“I’m worried about you. Morgan is too. He told me what happened during the last case.”
Henry and Will came back over to the women before Jane had to respond.
“Hey, bud! Are you having fun?” JJ asked.
“Yeah! I’m happy we come here to see Jane!” he replied.
Jane frowned and turned to look at JJ. “Come here to see me? How did you know I would be here?” she questioned.
“Henry, why don’t we go to the bathroom?” Will cut in, guiding Henry away again so he wouldn’t have to hear the upcoming conversation.
“JJ?” Jane spoke, narrowing her eyes.
“Jack called me and said you’d probably be here. He asked me to talk to you,” JJ confessed.
“Why? I’m fine!” Jane argued, standing up. “And you couldn’t have told me why you were here? You lied to me and you used Henry to do so!”
“I’m sorry, Jane, but I thought you’d walk away from me if you knew the real reason I was here. Jack said you left the apartment suddenly and didn’t even bring your phone. He wanted to make sure you were alright.”
“Well, I am. So you can stop worrying.”
“Jane, you know we both know you’re not.”
Before either of them could say anything else, JJ’s phone went off. She sighed and pulled it out, reading the message.
“It’s Hotch. He wants me to help gather the team. We have a case,” she informed Jane. “I’ll get Will to drive you home to gather what you need and then he can take both of us to the BAU.”
Both women dropped the previous subject as they left the park.
~~~~~
Weeks later. Thursday, June 3rd.
“Please?”
“No.”
“Please?!”
“No!”
"Pleeeease?!”
“Garcia, stop!”
While they were in the break room, Garcia had brought up the idea of Jane going on a date with someone new again. When Jane turned the idea down and headed back toward her desk, Garcia followed, trying to get her to at least consider it. Jane had finally had enough of it and stopped walking to turn back and look at her.
“Come on, Jane! I think it’d be good for you to put yourself back out there! It has to happen eventually!” Garcia pleaded.
Jane crossed her arms and shook her head. “I’m not ready yet, Pen,” she insisted.
“At least let me tell you about the guy I had in mind. He’s really attractive!” the blonde divulged with a grin.
“I don’t care. If I’m not ready, I’m not ready.”
Garcia let out an exasperated sigh. “Alright, confession time. I kinda sorta maybe already told him that you would go to dinner with him tomorrow night.”
Jane’s eyes widened. “You what?!”
“I’m sorry! But it’s for your own good! I just figured you needed a little encouragement to get back out there,” she explained. “I could call and check in with you around thirty minutes after you get to dinner. If things are going bad, you can tell him a case came up and leave.” Jane thought it over in her head. “Please, Jane.”
“What’s this guy look like?” Jane asked.
Garcia smiled and pulled out her phone, showing her a picture. “Hot, right?”
“Very,” Jane agreed. She looked back to Garcia and sighed. “Alright, I’ll go.”
“Yay!” she cheered, embracing her brunette friend. “I promise you you’re going to have a good time.”
“What’s this I hear about a good time?” Morgan asked, catching their conversation as he passed by.
“Jane has a hot date tomorrow night,” Garcia informed him.
“A date?” Over at his desk, Reid’s head perked up. Jane, Garcia, and Morgan continued to converse and he strained his ears to listen in on the conversation. He was so focused that he managed to knock his book to the ground, causing a loud bang that gained the attention of the three he was trying to eavesdrop on. They looked at him briefly before going back to their conversation.
~~~
After work the next day, Jane went home and got ready for her date.
“Good luck!” Jack told her as she went out the door.
She was the first to arrive at the restaurant and let the hostess take her to their table. He arrived fifteen minutes late.
“Jane Addison?” he asked, approaching the table.
“That’s me,” she replied.
“Hi, I’m Sam Mitchell. It’s nice to finally meet you.”
Jane stood to greet him and he gave her a hug. “Nice to meet you too.”
They both sat down and a waiter came over to check on them, asking if they’d like some time to look at the menu before ordering.
“I think we’re ready to order, actually,” Sam told him. Jane nodded, as she had plenty of time to look at the menu while waiting for him. “I will get the cajun pasta with the shrimp.”
“Good choice,” the waiter complemented, writing it down.
Jane opened her mouth to say her order but was cut off by Sam. “And the lady will have a strawberry almond salad. We’ll also have a bottle of red wine for the table.”
Jane frowned but didn’t object to his order. He thanked the waiter before turning back to her.
“So how do you know Penelope?” Jane asked him.
“Through a mutual friend,” he said vaguely.
“OK, um, what line of work are you in?”
“I’m a lawyer at a pretty big firm.”
“That’s great. I’m not sure how much Penelope told you about me, but I work with her-”
“At the FBI. Yeah, she mentioned it.”
“Oh, ok.”
A moment of silence passed between them as Jane waited to see if he’d make an effort to ask her a question. When he didn’t, she asked another one. “Do you have any siblings? I have-”
“Nope.”
“Oh, well, I have a younger brother. I actually live with him right now. We’re pretty close. I also have a dog named-”
“I’m not much of a dog person, or an animal person in general really. They’re so dirty and usually annoying.”
Jane shook her head. “You know what? I just realized that I have to go,” she said, standing up.
“What? You’re leaving? Why?” he asked.
“Because I don’t think I want to sit here anymore and pretend to be nice to someone who clearly doesn’t care to be respectful of me.”
She grabbed her purse and headed out the door. Thankfully, he didn’t follow.
As she drove home, Garcia called her.
“Hey, how’s it going?” she asked.
“I left, Garcia. That’s how it’s going.”
“You left already? Why?”
“How the hell did you think this would be a good idea? That man is a terrible person. He ordered for me like I couldn’t make up my own mind and then continued to interrupt me every time I tried to talk. And he hates animals? How does someone hate animals?”
Jane continued to go off on Garcia the whole drive home.
“I’m sorry, Jane! I had no idea he would be like that! My friend said he was a good guy!”
“But you haven’t actually met him yourself before, have you?” Jane accused her as she parked her car and headed towards the door.
“No. No, I haven’t,” she replied guiltily. “But my friend said he was cool!”
Jane walked up the steps. “Well, your friend is a horrible judge of character. From now on, never try to set me up with someone if you haven’t personally met the guy! I still can’t believe that you...”
Jane trailed off and slowed her pace as she took in her surroundings. This wasn’t her apartment complex. It was Reid’s.
“Jane?” Garcia called on the other side of the phone.
“I have to go,” Jane told her, hanging up the phone.
Jane stared at the door in front of her, debating what to do. She didn’t even know how she got there. After standing there for a few more seconds, she punched the wall in frustration.
“Ahh,” she cried out in pain, shaking her hand. She leaned against the wall and slid down to sit on the floor.
A minute later, the door opened and Reid peered out to find her sitting there.
“Jane?”
Jane looked up at him then back down to the floor. “Oh.”
“What are you doing here?” he questioned, coming out into the hallway.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to come here,” she apologized. “I was on the phone with Penelope and wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.” She shrugged her shoulders and added, “Old habits, I guess.”
“Do you want to come in?” he offered.
Jane’s head snapped up to look at him, trying to read him. “Are you sure?”
He nodded and gestured to the door. “Yeah, come in.”
Jane obliged, standing up and following him inside.
“Do you want anything to drink?” he asked.
“No, thank you.”
They took seats on opposite ends of the couch and an awkward silence fell between them.
“What happened to your date?” he asked after summing up the nerve to do so.
“He was an asshole so I left early,” she replied bluntly.
“Sorry,” he said softly.
More silence filled the room.
He cleared his throat and began to speak again. “Look, Jane. I, um. I’m sorry about, about everything that’s happened between us,” he began. Jane shifted uncomfortably in her seat, eyes trained on the floor. “You were right that Melissa had feelings for me. I, I should’ve listened.”
Jane scoffed and shook her head.. “I told you how I felt. I told you my fears and you just yelled at me.”
”I should never have done that. I’m sorry. I can’t say sorry enough! I was just mad that you would ever think I’d do something like that.” She finally looked at him, narrowing her eyes. “You get mad about that?” she questioned.
“I just couldn't understand how you thought I'd ever want to leave you!”
“Then you should've told me that!” Jane yelled, standing up. “You should’ve told me how ridiculous I was being! Convinced me I was wrong! You should’ve tried to stop me when I walked away, shouldn’t have let me out that door!” She gestured wildly toward the front door.
“I know,” Spencer responded softly, staring at the floor, feeling guilty.
“You know? Then why didn’t you?”
He shook his head and looked up at her. “I don’t know. I was stupid.”
Jane groaned and ran her face through her hands. “I can’t deal with this. I don’t want to bring all of this up again. I don’t want to fight anymore. I gotta go.” She turned away from him and made her way towards the door.
“Jane!” Spencer called out.
He moved quickly and put himself between her and the door.
“Spencer, please!” she pleaded, trying to get around him.
“No. Please, don’t go! You’re right about everything. I shouldn’t have gotten mad and yelled at you and I definitely shouldn’t have let you leave. If you couldn’t tell by the mess this apartment has turned into, I’m a wreck without you. And I still love you. Please stay,” he begged.
Jane couldn’t bring herself to meet his eyes, her own filling with tears. She stood there, thinking it over for a moment before silently nodding.
Spencer sighed in relief, engulfing her in a hug. Slowly, she returned the gesture.
Without speaking, they moved back to the living room. Spencer grabbed one of the Harry Potter movies from the shelf and put it into the DVD player before joining Jane on the couch, She cuddled up next to him and he pulled a blanket up over the two of them.
They spent most of the rest of the night there, not saying a word, just enjoying being back in each other’s arms again.

Bless The Broken Road - 25
Jane stood there, eyes wide, frozen in place. Spencer’s words echoed back to her in her mind. Her breathing started to pick up and she felt her knees go weak as she fell to the floor.
“Jane!” Morgan yelled as he and Garcia rushed over to her.
“I-I can’t believe he really...he really just,” Jane struggled to speak, sobbing. “He really just-” she gasped and let out another loud sob.
“He just needs some time, ladybug,” Morgan assured her. “He’ll come around and realize his mistake.”
“How about you come stay at my place tonight?” Garcia offered.
She shook her head, sniffling. “No, that’s alright. I can stay at Jack’s again.”
“Na uh, not tonight,” Garcia insisted. “You, my friend, need a girls’ night. You’re staying with me.”
“I’m not really in the mood for that, Pen!”
“Yeah, but you need it. Now come on!”
They stood and helped her up from the ground. Morgan pulled her into a tight embrace, comforting her, before allowing Garcia to whisk her away for a girls’ night.
~~~
The next day, no cases came in so everyone worked on paperwork all day. The tension was palpable in the air as both Reid and Addison did their best to avoid looking at each other.
At one point, Jane was returning to her desk after getting a refill of her coffee when she passed Spencer coming back from the bathroom. Upon seeing him, she immediately turned around and headed to Garcia’s office instead.
Morgan approached her in the afternoon and offered to help move her stuff out of Spencer’s apartment if Jack would help him do so. Jane accepted the offer with a sigh, telling him she’d text Jack about it.
At the end of the day, Hotch announced they didn’t have to come in the next day as long as a case didn’t come up, meaning they could have a three day weekend.
On the one hand, Jane saw it as a good thing. Three whole days without having to be around Spencer. On the other hand, it meant there was nothing to distract her from thinking about him.
That night, Morgan and Jack headed to Reid’s apartment with boxes to pack up Jane’s stuff.
As they entered, Morgan took a look at what a mess the apartment was. There were books, dishes, and random items scattered everywhere.
“Kid, are you sure about this? You should really talk to her, try to work it out,” Morgan insisted.
Reid shook his head. “It’s too late now. She wouldn’t want me now anyway,” he stated, moving to take a seat in the kitchen, staying out of the way as they gathered Jane’s things.
The whole weekend, Jane stayed cooped up inside, wrapped up in a blanket. She spent half the time sleeping and the rest of the time either watching movies or crying until she fell back asleep.
She had no idea that Spencer spent the weekend in a similar state of mind.
~~~
Monday, May 17th.
The team was gathered at the round table for a briefing. All were present except for Reid.
When he came in late, everyone looked up except for Jane, who did her best to avoid eye contact.
“Well, hello,” JJ greeted, an amused tone in her voice.
“What, did you join a boy band?” Hotch asked, causing Jane’s head to snap up and look at Reid.
“No?” he replied, confused. Morgan laughed and Rossi shook his head.
He had gotten a hair cut. It was shorter and messier. Quite different from his former, near shoulder length style.
Jane struggled not to laugh along with Morgan.
The case lasted a couple days. They returned on Wednesday and were presented another new case the following day.
“In New York City, two sets of two victims have been found within the last few weeks. Each set including one man and one woman,” Garcia began the briefing. “The women had their faces slashed up while the men had their genitals cut off.”
“Two different MOs, two UNSUBS?” JJ questioned.
“Or it could be one UNSUB with different attitudes towards different genders,” Jane suggested.
“Any connections between the victims?” Rossi asked.
“Yes, sir. Both women were dancers at the same strip club.”
“Start looking into the victims, see if the men have any connection to each other or the two women. Everyone else, wheels up in 30,” Hotch ordered.
On the short flight to New York, Jane read through the case file, soaking in the information they already had. She examined the pictures of the women. Suddenly, her mind flashed back to months ago when she was tied up, forced into wearing a skimpy outfit similar to the ones these victims were wearing.
She felt a gentle push on her shoulder as Morgan shook her. Looking over to him, she blinked her eyes, snapping out of her daze.
“Are you alright?” he asked. Jane nodded and gave him a small smile.
Five minutes from landing, Garcia popped on their screens with new information.
“According to their credit card records, it looks like both men went to the strip club the women victims worked at often,” she told them.
Hotch thanked her then assigned everyone their duties. “I’ll coordinate with the local police. JJ and Rossi, talk to any family members available. Reid, go talk to the coroner about the autopsies then start working on victimology. Addison and Morgan, go to the club. Talk with management and the workers.”
Upon arrival at the club, Jane and Morgan first spoke with the bartender, who was able to confirm that both men came there often.
“Have you seen any suspicious behavior lately?” Morgan asked.
“There’s this one guy. He turns down any propositions made by the girls yet he comes in here a lot. I don’t know his name, though. He pays for his drinks in cash,” the bartender divulged.
“Thank you,” Jane told him before they stepped away.
Morgan caught sight of the dancers as one opened the door to their back dressing room area. “I think I’ll go talk to the girls.”
“Woah there, uh uh,” Jane told him, grabbing his arm. “You don’t need any distractions. You talk to management about getting security footage to Penelope. I’ll talk to the girls about what they’ve noticed.”
After speaking with the dancers and obtaining the security footage, they left to meet up with the rest of the team.
“The cuts on the victims were rough, meaning they weren’t from a practiced hand,” Reid shared with the team. “Also, the men vary in type as if there’s no preference yet both women are blue-eyed with brown hair just below the shoulders.” He momentarily looked over at Jane, who matched the description he just gave.
“Let’s call the club and ask them to send their nighttime security here before their shifts. I want them to have the profile,” Hotch instructed.
Garcia called to inform the team about what she found out from the security tapes. “I was unable to get facial recognition on the man you described, but I can confirm that he turns down any attention from the women.”
After the team gave the profile to the club’s security and local police, they called it a night.
Throughout the night, nightmares plagued Jane’s sleep, sending her back to the basement where she was held captive half a year ago. It’d been a long time since she experienced such dreams about what happened to her and she was caught off-guard by their reappearance.
In the morning, the police found two more victims. Rossi and Morgan went to the club and confirmed that the new victims had been there the night before. The woman was another dancer, the man was a patron.
The coroner was also able to tell the team that the victims had been drugged.
The new victims did nothing but confirm everything they already knew about the case.
JJ expressed this to the group, saying, “We know where he’s going to be and that he’ll likely strike again soon.”
“Well, I think it’s obvious what we have to do, isn’t it?” Jane spoke up, looking around at her fellow team members.
Reid’s brow furrowed.
“Jane’s right,” Hotch agreed. “Let’s get an undercover mission planned out for tonight.”
“What? You’re going to let her go undercover alone?” Reid questioned.
Everyone turned to look at him. Jane narrowed her eyes in confusion while others expressed looks of curiosity or slight amusement.
“She won’t be alone,” Hotch assured him. “Morgan and I will pose as security guards. JJ and Rossi will be in a van outside helping Garcia with surveillance, and you’ll pose as a customer,” he explained, planning aloud.
“What?” Reid’s eyes widened. “Me? Why?”
“We need someone young and non-threatening,” he explained. He then turned to Jane. “Are you sure you can handle this?” he asked.
“I’m sure,” she insisted, pushing any anxiety she had to the back of her mind as best she could.
The team spent the day planning their operation. Not long before it was time to go, someone arrived with their undercover outfits for them to change into.
Jane headed into the bathroom to change. When she stepped out of the stall and caught sight of herself in the mirror, her mind flashed back again to her case. The sound of the door opening snapped her out of it as JJ came in to ask if she was ready to go.
“Yeah.”
She followed the blonde back to their workroom. Reid was already back from changing. He was wearing an outfit that looked more suitable for Morgan. His eyes widened at the sight of her entering the room and Morgan turned to follow his gaze, wolf-whistling at what he saw.
Jane smiled and rolled her eyes, leaning into JJ and asking her quietly if she could find something for her to wear to stay more covered up until they got to the club. JJ agreed and left to go find her something.
~
Jane sat in front of one of the mirrors in the dressing room at the club. She stared at her reflection, taking deep breaths as she tried to calm down.
“Can everyone hear me?” Hotch asked. Reid, Morgan, Rossi, JJ, and Garcia all confirmed that they could. “Jane, are you set to go?” She took another deep breath. “Jane?”
“Yeah, all set,” she spoke quietly, trying not to draw the attention of the other girls.
“Alright, ladybug,” Morgan spoke to her. “I’m going to be talking you through this, ok?”
She nodded but realized he couldn’t see her do so. “OK,” she told him.
“You have to make everyone believe you’re really one of the dancers. You’ve got to exert confidence and appear really committed to what you’re doing. Can you do that?”
“I have no choice, do I?” she quipped.
“Head out to the floor now. Confidence. Smile. Shoulders back,” Morgan instructed.
Jane did as she was told and exited the dressing room, taking a look around the room.
“Head to the stage. It’ll give you a better view of the crowd.”
Jane cursed under her breath but maintained the smile on her face as she walked up the steps of the stage and headed over to the pole in the center of the catwalk. Taking a look at the other dancers, she mimicked moves she saw them doing, as she clearly had no other experience with any of this.
“Doing good, sugar,” Morgan encouraged her. “That’s my girl.”
She smiled, speaking through her teeth. “Visual on UNSUB?” she asked the team.
“2 o’clock,” Rossi told her from his view of the cameras out in the surveillance van.
She caught sight of the man and flashed him a flirty smile.
Meanwhile, one of the other dancers made her way over to Reid.
“Care for a private dance?” she asked him with a wink.
“No thank you,” he politely declined.
“Alright,” Morgan spoke to Jane again. “About ten more seconds then go find Reid and take him to a private booth. Don’t blow your cover. Remember to stay in character.”
Jane obliged and made her way down off the stage. She sauntered up to Reid, making sure the UNSUB was still following her with his eyes.
“Hey there, pretty boy,” she greeted him, mentally screaming at the situation.
“H-h-hi,” he stuttered.
“What do you say you and I go somewhere a little more private?” she asked him.
He gulped and Jane took his hand, leading him to a booth.
They both heard Morgan say in their ears, “Stay in character until Garcia clears you from any cameras in the booth.”
“What do you want us to do?” Jane questioned.
“Use your imagination.”
Jane groaned in frustration as they entered the booth. She rolled her eyes in annoyance but kept the smile painted on her face as she pushed Reid down onto the chair and straddled him. Trying not to think too much about it, she began kissing his neck and his hands found her waist. He let out a small moan and slid his hands down farther to cup her ass, squeezing slightly, eliciting a small moan from her as well. She trailed kisses up before she caught his lips with hers and he kissed back fiercely.
The sound of the curtains opening caused them to break apart. They looked to the entrance to see another dancer standing there. “I’m sorry,” she apologized. “I didn’t realize there was anyone using this booth.” She left, closing the curtains again.
Reid and Addison turned back to each other. In their ears, they heard Garcia tell them they were clear of cameras.
“What took you so long?” Jane asked, still breathing heavily.
Garcia ignored her question, instead informing them about a new discovery she made from reviewing the security footage again. “All of the male victims and the female victims they were found with were with said girls at the club the night they were killed. Also, that dancer that just walked in on you? She approached all of the men but was rejected and then the men later went with the other dancer that they were found with.”
“The UNSUB’s not a man. It’s the dancer,” Jane spoke. She looked at Reid and realized she was still sitting on his lap. Clearing her throat, she stood up and ran a hand through her hair.
“OK, I’ve got a name. Carley Little,” Garcia informed the team.
“Carley Little,” Jane repeated. “I remember that name. The other dancers mentioned she was gone the day that Morgan and I went to talk to them. She has no idea that I’m an FBI agent.”
“Alright, Jane and Reid, go sit at a table and talk for a while. Get Ms. Little’s attention and then leave the club. We’ll be outside waiting to catch her before she gets to you,” Hotch told them.
They followed his orders, heading out to a table.
“So,” Reid began, unsure how to even have a fake conversation with Jane.
“I hate your new hair,” Jane told him, keeping a smile on her face to go with the act.
His eyes narrowed momentarily before he recovered his act and smiled back at her. “Well, it’s a good thing you don’t have to put up with it other than at work anymore.”
Jane caught Little’s eye and leaned forward to whisper in Reid’s ear, “She’s watching, let’s get out of here.”
He grinned and stood. “Alright.” She stood as well and he wrapped an around her, placing his hand on the small of her back as they headed out the door.
Little made her way after them, needle in hand ready to inject Jane with a drug to overpower her. Before she could do so, the rest of the team yelled out, “FBI!”
Reid pushed Jane behind him protectively and pulled out his gun with the others. Jane, weaponless due to her outfit, remained behind him.
Little dropped the needle and Morgan moved forward to put her in handcuffs. They returned to the station where they were able to change back into their regular clothing before interrogating her.
Per her request, Jane was allowed to be the one to interrogate Ms. Little. It didn’t take much for her to confess to all she did.
“The girls weren’t even prettier than me!” she complained. “But I could see I had no chance with the last one,” she admitted, referring to Reid. Jane raised an eyebrow. “It was clear he only has eyes for you.” Jane looked down and bit her lip. “We’re done here,” she said before quickly exiting the room. She walked past the others who had been watching on the other side of the glass and headed to the bathroom. She took up a spot in front of the sink and leaned on the counter, trying to calm down.
Soon, the team packed up at the station and left for the hotel, planning to fly back in the morning despite the short distance.
Jane had nightmares again. She woke up in the middle of the night, screaming. Once her surroundings came back into view, she wiped the sweat off her forehead and tried to get her breathing back under control.
A knock came at the door. She got up and went to look through the peephole to find Morgan standing on the other side of the door.
“Is everything alright in here?” Morgan asked as she opened the door and let him in. “I could hear you screaming from my room next door.”
Jane looked down at the floor. “I’m sorry, Derek.”
“Are you getting nightmares again?” he questioned.
“Again?” “Reid told me about them the first time they happened. He was worried about you and wanted advice on how to help,” he explained.
Jane sighed and took a seat on the end of the bed. “It’s been six months,” she stated.
“You mean it feels like six months since you broke up? It’s only been a week.”
“No, not that. Since I was abducted,” she told him, her eyes flicking up to him then back to her hands in her lap nervously.
He sighed and took a seat next to her. “Sometimes PTSD doesn’t start until months after the traumatic experience occurs. It’ll be alright,” he assured her.
She hesitated before asking, “Will you stay with me?”
He met her eyes and saw how exhausted she looked. Not wanting her to go through a sleepless night, tortured by her past, he agreed.
They both crawled under the covers and fell asleep.

Bless The Broken Road - 24
While the team was out to eat, Reid’s phone went off and he excused himself.
“Who do you think that is?” JJ asked.
“It’s probably Melissa from that case in Utah,” Jane suggested. She explained how he’d been maintaining contact with her since the end of the case.
“It’s probably nothing,” JJ assured her.
Reid came back to the table and apologized for the interruption. “It was my mother,” he explained.
“How is she?” Morgan asked as JJ glanced at Jane, a guilty look appearing on her face.
“She’s good.”
As they left the restaurant, Jane got Hotch alone and asked if it was too late to get her a separate room from Spencer at the hotel.
“There are no more available rooms. We got the last ones,” Hotch told her. “You can share with JJ.”
When they arrived in the hotel lobby, Hotch handed out the room keys and told JJ and Jane they’d be rooming together. JJ said she was fine with it.
Jane went into the bathroom to get ready for bed first. When she exited the bathroom, she found JJ talking to Henry on the phone. She held it out to her and said, “Henry wants to talk to you.”
Jane took the phone from her. “Hey, buddy! How are you?” she greeted.
“Good. When are you and Uncle Spencer coming over to play with me?” the toddler asked.
Jane’s face fell. “I, I don’t know, Henry. Hopefully soon. I’m going to hand the phone back to your mom, alright?” Jane handed JJ the phone and she said her final goodnight before hanging up and going to get ready for bed herself.
When JJ reentered the room, she found Jane sitting on the bed, her knees pulled up to her chest, and tears streaming down her face.
“Oh, sweetheart!” JJ exclaimed, crawling onto the bed and pulling her close. Jane rested her head in her lap.
“What if he never talks to me again? What if this is it for us?” Jane questioned, expressing her fears.
“Jane, things will work out. The two of you just need to talk it over after the case is done. It’ll be alright.”
~
In the morning, Jane got up late just as JJ was coming back into the room with breakfast in hand.
“Hey, you’re up. Are you hungry?” JJ asked.
“No, not really. I think I’m just going to get ready and go down to see if I can get some coffee before we have to leave,” Jane told her.
Once down in the lobby, Jane fixed herself a cup of coffee. When she turned around, she came face to face with Spencer.
“Hi,” she greeted shyly.
“Hi.”
She moved out of the way so he could get to the coffee.
“Listen,” Jane spoke to his back. “Can we just agree to be able to talk to each other for the sake of the case and worry about everything else when it’s over?” she asked.
“Yeah, we can do that,” Spencer agreed.
Once the rest of the team joined them in the lobby, they all headed back to the field office.
Another murder had been committed.
Hotch sent Morgan, Jane, JJ, and Reid to the house where the victim, a husband and a father of two, was killed. When they arrived, Jane and Morgan took a look at the crime scene while JJ and Reid talked to the wife.
They found out from the wife that her husband had been abusive. She filed charges but he was found not guilty.
Jane took a look around the front door area and noticed the newspaper on the ground. She bent over and picked it up. There was a picture of the victim and his wife on it and the story told about the abuse case.
She took a look back inside at her coworkers before stepping out to call Garcia.
“Hey Pen, I need you to look up if there were any newspaper articles regarding the other victims,” she told her.
“That’ll take me a while. I’ll hit you right back.”
“Thanks, Pen!”
Jane returned inside to share the article with the others. After finishing up at the house, they headed back to the station.
Shortly after they arrived, Garcia called Jane back with her search results.
“I was able to find articles in the paper regarding the latest victim and the professor specifically. There were also generic articles about drug dealing and prostitution that were published around the same time those victims were murdered.”
“What if the UNSUB was a newspaper deliverer?” Reid suggested.
“Baby Girl, look to see who was working the paper route of the latest victim,” Morgan told her.
“That’ll be Leo Ward. Looks like when he was in college, he reported one of his professors for sexually assaulting him six times. She was acquitted.”
“Six times. That’s the number of times he stabs his victims,” Jane stated.
“His first victim was a professor in a similar situation. It probably reminded him of his past and that’s what triggered him,” JJ thought aloud.
“Home and work addresses are sent to your phones,” Garcia informed them.
“Thanks, PG.”
They found Ward just as he was leaving his work for the day. When he caught sight of the team, he grabbed a random woman walking near him and held a knife to her throat.
“Leo, let her go,” Jane ordered.
“No!”
“I know what happened to you. I know how that professor assaulted you and got away with it. This isn’t the way to deal with that.” They continued to stare at each other but he remained silent. “You killed people who were getting away with crimes, right? But this woman you’re threatening right now is innocent. You don’t want to hurt an innocent person. Let her go,” Jane urged him.
He thought it over for a moment before finally dropping the knife. Hotch moved forward to arrest him and JJ went to help the woman.
Once everything was settled and squared away with the case, Hotch informed the team that the jet wouldn’t be ready to leave until the next morning.
“Why don’t we go back to the hotel to grab a change of clothes and then head out to dinner?” Rossi suggested.
The others agreed and they went to the hotel. As everyone was heading up to their rooms, Spencer stopped Jane.
“Can we talk now?” he asked.
Jane nodded and followed him to his room.
After shutting the door behind her, Jane took a seat on the bed but left space between her and Reid.
“I’m sorry about the things I said the other night,” Spencer began. “I was out of line. I was just mad and I didn’t mean any of it. I’m sorry.”
Jane shook her head. “No, I should’ve told you from the start why I didn’t want you talking to Melissa,” she admitted. “I know you’d never cheat on me but I was afraid that something would happen because Melissa was clearly making advances towards you.”
Spencer frowned. “Advances?”
“Yeah.”
“You thought she was flirting with me? Her sister and sister’s whole family just died! She was seeking comfort!” he argued, raising his voice. “And if she was, I think I would know and put an end to it.”
Jane raised her own voice to match his. “I can’t believe this. I tell you my fears and all you do is get mad and yell at me about it! If that’s how it’s going to be, then there’s no sense in continuing this conversation.”
She stood up and he did as well.
“Fine!” he spat.
“Fine!”
Jane turned to leave. When she opened the door, she nearly ran into Morgan.
“Woah. Slow down there, sweetness,” he told her.
“Not right now, Morgan.”
“I was just checking to see if you were ready to go. The rest of the team is heading down to the lobby now.”
Jane shook her head, avoiding his eyes. “No. I’m not coming,” she told him before moving past him and walking away.
As she approached her and JJ’s room, JJ was exiting.
“Hey, are you ready?” JJ asked.
“No, uh..” Jane shook her head. “Spencer and I just got into another fight and I’m not feeling up to it right now. Go on without me,” she told her.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah.”
JJ stepped forward and gave her a comforting hug before obliging, heading down the hall.
Once alone, Jane dialed Garcia’s number.
“Hey Garcia, have you left your office yet?” she asked.
“No, not yet. Why?”
“I need you to look up Spencer’s text messages between him and Melissa.”
"Oh no. I don’t think that’s such a good idea, Jane,” she objected. “I’d feel all icky creeping on his private messages like that.”
“Garcia, please!”
Garcia groaned, “Fine! I’ll send pictures of them to your phone.”
“Thank you.”
Jane hung up and began pacing back and forth until her phone beeped, signaling that Garcia had sent her the texts.
She ceased her pacing and read through the messages, taking a seat with a huff upon her findings.
Jane was right. Melissa was clearly flirting with Spencer, but he never returned any of her advances.
Shortly after she finished reading the texts, Garcia called her back.
“Hello?”
“Are you going to tell me what all this is about?” Garcia questioned.
Jane explained her most recent fight with Spencer and how he yelled at her after she told him her fears about his communication with Melissa.
“He claimed that she wasn’t flirting, but I just had to confirm that I was right.”
“But he never flirted back, Jane. He didn’t do anything wrong,” Garcia pointed out.
“I know that! But he acted like I was crazy for thinking she was interested in him. He wouldn’t listen to me!” Jane scoffed. “I gotta go. I’ll see you when we get back.”
Jane ended the call and went to change into PJ’s before crawling into bed. As she thought over what all had happened, tears began to spill over onto her cheeks. She continued to sob, letting it all out now before JJ came back from dinner. Fortunately, she was able to fall asleep before her roommate for the night returned.
~
On the flight home the next morning, Jane and Spencer sat apart again. She attempted to read to pass the time but kept glancing over at him, debating if and when to try talking to him again.
During one of her glances, she managed to accidentally catch his eye. He looked away briefly before looking back at her. With a head jerk, she gestured for him to follow her towards the back area of the jet, hoping to give them a little more privacy while they spoke.
“Look, I’m sorry for raising my voice at you. But I assure you, nothing is going on with Melissa,” he insisted.
“I know you’re not doing anything,” Jane tried to explain calmly, “but you must know that she was flirting with you.”
“No, she wasn’t.”
“Yes, she was!” Jane said, struggling to keep her voice down.
“Why are you so certain of that?”
“Because I saw the text messages!”
Jane’s eyes widened upon realizing what she’d just admitted.
“You saw the text messages? When? Did you steal my phone?!” Spencer yelled.
“I may have had Garcia look up your messages,” Jane confessed quietly, her eyes now trained on the floor.
“You what?!”
Jane glanced up and saw the others quickly look away.
“I can’t believe this! I can’t believe you actually went so far just to try to prove you were right!”
“I’m sorry, alright. But you have to understand where I’m coming from!”
“Just forget it.”
He walked away, returning to his seat and leaving her standing there, speechless.
~
The team arrived back at headquarters and headed inside. As they entered the BAU’s bullpen, they saw someone standing at Reid’s desk.
It was Melissa.
“Melissa, what are you doing here?” he asked, walking over to her.
She shrugged. “I have nothing left back home so I thought it’d be nice to come to visit,” she cheered.
Jane and Morgan stood off to the side and Garcia came out of her office to join them.
“Did you know she was here?” Jane asked the blonde.
“No. I’ve been in my office. I had no idea anybody had come up here,” she admitted.
They turned back to try to listen in on Reid’s conversation.
“I know you’ve been ignoring my flirting, but I figured you’re just too shy to say things like that over the phone,” Melissa explained. “I figured if I came to visit in person, you’d be able to confront it face to face.”
“Someone needs to do something,” Jane told Morgan and Garcia.
“Well go over there then! Make her realize he’s taken!” Morgan told her.
“I can't go over there! He hates me right now. Please, Morgan. Go do something,” she pleaded.
"Alright, alright,” he gave in.
The two women watched nervously as he went over and put an arm around Reid.
“Hey, pretty boy,” he greeted.
“Pretty boy? That’s an accurate nickname,” Melissa mused.
“It’s good to see you again, Melissa,” Morgan told her.
“You as well, Agent Morgan.”
He turned back to Reid. “So listen, it’s been a while since we’ve had a night out. What do you say about having a date night Friday?” he suggested. “Me and my girl, you and Jane?”
Melissa’s face fell. “Oh, I didn’t realize you already had a girlfriend. I’m sorry I came here.”
She moved past them, bumping Spencer’s shoulder as she went by.
“Wait, Melissa!” he called out to her.
“Never speak to me again!” she cried, hurrying out of the room.
Jane breathed a sigh of relief.
“I’m sorry, brother,” Morgan told him. “It had to happen.”
Reid looked at Jane.
“I told you Melissa had more than friendship on her mind,” she said.
“Yeah, only because you used sneaky and intrusive means to obtain the information!” he snapped.
“Spence, I-”
He cut her off. “You’re going to have to take the rest of your stuff out of my apartment because we are done!”
He started to head towards the door.
“Wait!” Jane cried.
He continued walking without looking back, leaving her to watch him go.

Bless The Broken Road - 23
Tuesday, April 20th. Jane looked over at Spencer sitting at his desk. It appeared that he had just finished up on his paperwork and was pulling out a chess board from a drawer.
She stood up and walked over to sit on his desk. “You’re playing chess against yourself?” she questioned. “Why don’t you play against me?”
He looked up at her. “Do you know how to play?”
She shrugged. “I know the basics.”
JJ walked over to them before they could start. “We have a new case,” she informed them.
Spencer turned back to Jane. “To be continued,” he told her with a smile.
“Prepare for a long flight, folks, because you are heading to Utah,” Garcia told the team once everyone had settled into the briefing room. “One month ago, Melissa Nichols reported her sister’s family missing. This includes her sister, brother-in-law, and two nephews. The police never did anything about it. This morning, the police responded to an odor complaint at the family’s residence and found the house to be completely empty except for a decaying body, which is yet to be ID’d. The coroner puts the time of death at right around a month ago.”
“We’ll discuss more on the jet as we have a long flight ahead of us. Wheels up in 30,” Hotch ordered.
Jane turned to Spencer. “Want to play chess before we leave?”
“Why don’t we go get on the jet right away? That way we don’t have to move when it’s time to go,” Spencer suggested.
Jane agreed and they moved to gather their things before heading to the jet. Spencer helped her out on the first few rounds and they spent the majority of the flight playing, Jane slowly improving over time.
Shortly before landing, they briefly discussed the case and Hotch directed the team to where he wanted them to go. “Reid and JJ, talk to the sister. Jane and Morgan, head to the crime scene and talk to neighbors. Dave and I will talk with the coroner and set up at the police station. Garcia, I want you to look into any enemies the family may have had to see who the John Doe is.
When Jane and Morgan went to the house, they found it to be quite literally empty other than blood and other stains from the victim. They spent some time looking around before going next door to speak to the neighbor, a nice, elderly lady who shared how she hadn’t seen the family, or any other activity, for about a month other than the cops showing up.
“What’s the last thing you remember seeing?” Jane asked the woman.
“There were two men loading all of their belongings into a white moving van. It took them several trips to move everything. I figured they moved, but it was strange. I never saw a for sale sign in the yard or anything,” she divulged.
“Thank you for your help.”
Morgan and Addison headed back to the car. On the drive back to the station, they talked about what they’d learned.
“Maybe the family didn’t kill the guy. Maybe the victim is one of the movers. The pair planned on robbing and abducting the family but something went wrong so the UNSUB killed his partner,” Morgan pondered.
When the team gathered back together, Hotch and Rossi shared that they learned the name of the victim: Frank Owen.
“Melissa insists the family had no enemies and would never kill anyone,” JJ shared.
“She’s right. A neighbor told us she saw movers taking their belongings out of the house and into a moving van a month ago. We think the victim is one of the movers and the UNSUB’s partner,” Jane shared.
“Let’s have Garcia look into owners or renters of white moving vans who also own or rent storage units in the area. Jane and Reid, go talk to Melissa again. Ask if she knows the victim. The rest of us will start looking at the geographical profile,” Hotch told everyone.
Spencer and Jane made their way down the hallway to the room Melissa was sitting in.
“No, I don’t recognize him,” Melissa told them after they showed her a picture of the victim and told her his name.
“Did your sister’s family own anything particularly valuable?” Jane asked.
She shook her head.
Spencer set a pen and notepad in front of her. “Do you think you could write a list of everything you remember your sister having in her house? It can be as detailed or generic as you remember. We’ll give the list to our technical analyst so she can see if any users online are selling multiple items off of the list.”
“We’ll give you some time to think,” Jane told her. She turned to Spencer and asked, softly, “Want to go grab some coffee while we wait?”
“Sure,” he agreed as they walked towards the door.
“Wait,” Melissa called out. “Can you stay with me? I can’t focus while I’m left all alone.”
Jane told him, “I’ll bring you back a coffee,” before leaving.
Five minutes later, Jane returned and handed Spencer a coffee as she sat down next to him, touching his arm affectionately.
“This is all that I can remember,” Melissa told them, handing over the notepad.
“Thank you. This helps,” Spencer assured her before he and Jane exited the room. Jane sent pictures of the list to Garcia and told her what to do with it.
Around ten minutes later, Garcia called to tell the team she’d found a number of the items for sale online. The team decided to set up a fake meeting to buy a piece of furniture from the UNSUB, Morgan posing as the buyer in order to catch the UNSUB.
When they managed to apprehend him, they brought him in for interrogation. After talking with him for several minutes, they were able to get him to tell them about a storage unit he owned where he housed all of the stolen items.
The team rushed to the location and found all of the family’s stuff, but no bodies. As they looked around, they began to pick up a foul smell coming from the unit next door. Breaking into the unit, it was empty other than the bodies of the family members decomposing.
When the team got back to the police station, Spencer took it upon himself to be the one to tell Melissa the bad news. Jane watched on as she covered her mouth with her hands in shock before flinging her arms around Spencer. He flinched at the contact, but then hugged her back, comforting her. Jane’s eyes widened in confusion.
~
On the flight home, Jane moved to go sit by Spencer.
“Is she going to be ok?” she asked, referring to Melissa.
“Eventually,” he told her.
~~~
A few days later on Friday, Jane approached Spencer’s desk just as he was getting off the phone.
“Who was that?” Jane asked.
“Melissa,” he told her.
“Melissa from the last case Melissa?” she questioned.
“Yeah. I gave her my number the first time JJ and I interviewed her. I thought she’d leave the station and wanted her to be able to contact us if she thought of more information. I didn’t realize she’d end up staying at the station until we solved the case,” he explained.
~~~
A week later it happened again. Jane took a seat on Spencer’s desk and asked him who he was texting.
“Melissa. She’s had a rough day,” he told her.
"You know you don't have to do that. It's not your job to take care of people after a case is over,” Jane reminded him.
He shrugged. “It’s not that big of a deal.”
“It’s not your burden.”
“And why does that matter?”
Jane stood up and put her hands up. “You know what? I don’t want to fight about this so I’m just going to walk away.”
Before he could answer, Jane headed off to Garcia’s office, entering without knocking.
“You know it’s rude not to-” she paused mid-sentence upon seeing Jane’s face. “What’s wrong?”
Jane sighed. “Spencer and I just got into a fight.”
“No! About what?”
“He’s still in contact with Melissa Nichols from the last case. I told him it wasn’t his job to console her and he got defensive.” Jane pulled up a chair next to her blonde companion. “I’m scared, Pen. What if he starts getting feelings for her?”
“Oh honey, you know that’ll never happen! He’s crazy about you,” Garcia assured her. “Did you tell him that's why you didn't like him talking to her?”
“No.”
“You need to tell him.”
Jane sighed. “I know. I will, but later.”
~~~
Sunday, May 9th, Jane still hadn’t talked to Spencer about her feelings about him continuing to talk to Melissa, hoping he’d stop by now.
At 3am, Spencer’s phone rang, waking both of them up.
Spencer groaned and sat up, reaching blindly for the phone on the bedside table. It stopped ringing just as he picked it up.
“It’s Melissa,” he told Jane.
“You're still talking to her?” Jane questioned, sitting up as well.
“Yeah.”
“What, hasn't she ever heard of time differences?”
“She's having a rough time right now,” Spencer defended her.
“And why is that your issue?”
“Why does it matter? Why do you care? It shouldn't be that big of a deal!” he yelled. ”Why do you really not want me talking to her?”
“You're a profiler, figure it out yourself,” Jane spat back at him, getting out of bed.
She went to the closet and picked out extra sheets and a pillow, taking them to the living room.
“What are you doing?” Spencer asked, following her.
“You can sleep on the couch for the rest of the night,” she told him.
"You're kicking me out of my own bedroom? It's my apartment!” he argued.
“The last time I checked, it was our apartment!”
“Not anymore.”
Jane’s eyes widened and she took a step back. “You’re serious?” she asked softly.
Spencer thought for a moment. “Yeah.”
Jane let out a ragged breath before saying, “Fine then.”
She headed back to the bedroom and pulled out her suitcase, filling it quickly before returning to the living room to put shoes on.
“Where are you going?” Spencer interrogated.
“I’m going to go stay at Jack’s place if that’s how you really feel,” she told him.
She was almost out the door when Spencer called out to her.
“Jane.”
She turned back to look at him. “Yeah?” she asked, hopeful.
“You forgot your keys.”
She looked to find her keys on the counter still. “Oh right.” Jane grabbed the keys and headed out the door. After closing it, she stopped to stare at it for a moment, waiting for it to reopen. Waiting for Spencer to rush after her and stop her from leaving. But the door remained closed. Taking a deep breath, Jane turned away and headed off to Jack’s.
~
Inside the apartment, Reid groaned in frustration. How could he let her leave like that?
He made his way to the nearest bookshelf and grabbed a book at random, throwing it across the room in anger. He continued his tantrum, throwing stuff all around the room before collapsing on the couch in regret.
~
Jane arrived at Jack’s and let herself in, trying not to wake him up at such an early hour. She slipped off her shoes, set her stuff down, then settled in on the couch to sleep for the rest of the night.
~
In the morning, Jane awoke to Jack gently shaking her shoulder.
“Jane, what are you doing here?”
Jane sat up, last night’s memories rushing back to her. “Oh god,” she cried, putting her face in her hands. “Spencer and I got into a giant fight last night and I tried to kick him out to the couch. He responded by telling me it wasn’t our apartment anymore, it was just his.”
“Oh, Jane.” Jack moved to sit next to her and wrapped his arms around her. “I’m so sorry. I’m sure he didn’t mean it. You know what you should do?”
“What?” “You should dress super nice for work and show him what he’s missing,” Jack suggested.
“What time is it?”
“9am.”
Jane broke away from his embrace. “I’m late!”
She grabbed her bag and hurried to go get ready.
Arriving to work hours late, Garcia greeted her as she entered the bullpen.
“Thank goodness you’re here. I was just about to call you. We have a case. I was just going to tell everyone to head to the round table.”
“Don’t worry, I’m here,” Jane assured her, grateful for the distraction of a case.
When she entered the briefing room, Jane asked Morgan to trade seats with her.
“Why?” he questioned.
“Please just do it? Quickly!” Jane insisted.
“Alright, alright.”
They swapped seats right before Spencer entered the room. As he made his way to his seat, he didn’t even spare a glance towards Jane.
Garcia filled them in on the case. Three people had been killed in Huntsville, Alabama, each stabbed six times in the stomach. The first was a college professor, the second a drug dealer and third a prostitute.
Once the briefing was over, Jane went to her desk to gather her things and prepare to leave. Her phone rang and she saw that it was Jack calling her.
“Jane, how are you doing?” Jack asked.
“Not so good, Jack,” she told him, looking around to make sure no one was paying attention to her. “He won’t even look at me. But we have a case, so hopefully, that can take my mind off of it for a while.”
“Do you want me to stay on the phone with you until you have to leave to keep you busy?” he offered.
“I appreciate it, but I have some stuff to do before we leave. I’ll be alright. Just remember to pick up Shortstack after work. You’re in charge of him for a few days.”
“Alright. Good luck. I love you.”
“Love you too.”
~
Jane and Spencer sat on opposite ends of the jet for the flight.
Once they got closer to their destination, Hotch assigned the team their duties.
“Garcia, look into the backgrounds of the victims. Try to find a connection. Dave and I will set up at the field office. JJ and Reid, talk to the professor’s relatives. Morgan and Addison, head to the latest crime scene.”
Jane instantly relaxed when she heard that she didn’t have to be paired up with Reid. Morgan noticed from across the aisle.
As soon as they got into the SUV, Morgan looked over at her.
“What?” she questioned.
He looked forward again and started driving.
“What’s going on between you and Reid?” he asked.
She sighed. “I knew this question was coming.”
“Come on, baby girl. Talk to me.”
“We got in a fight because I didn’t like the fact that he’s still in contact with Melissa from that case in Utah a while back. Words were spat back and forth last night and I ended up leaving to stay at Jack’s,” she explained. “He wouldn’t even look at me today, Derek. I don’t know what to do.”
“You should talk to him about how you feel,” he encouraged her.
“I know I’ll have to eventually,” she conceded.
They arrived at the crime scene and parked on the side of the street before stepping out into the alleyway.
“This is concealed from the street pretty good. There’s not much lighting,” Morgan observed. He headed down farther to check something out just as his phone began to ring. Taking it out of his pocket and looking at it, he tossed it to Jane to answer while he continued down the alley.
“Hello,” Jane answered.
“Hey.”
Jane’s heart leaped up to her throat. It was Spencer calling. She looked down the alley towards Morgan, accusingly. He knew it was him calling.
“The professor was accused of rape a while ago and was recently acquitted,” Reid shared.
“Jane, come here!” Morgan called.
“Hang on,” she told Reid, walking over to Morgan.
“This business has a camera on their back door,” Morgan stated.
“We found a camera. We’ll get the footage to Garcia,” Jane shared with Reid.
“Alright. Well, you should call her since I’m not allowed to have communications with other women,” Spencer told her.
“Spencer--”
He hung up before she got the chance to continue. She stared at the phone for a second before nearly throwing it to the floor.
“Hey hey hey!” Morgan stopped her. “That’s my phone!”
“I’m sorry,” Jane apologized. “He just snapped at me about how I should call Garcia cause ‘he’s not allowed to speak to other women’,” she explained, using air quotes.
“I’ll talk with him later, alright? Right now let’s go talk to the business owner.”
They were able to access the camera footage but were unable to make out much from it. They sent it on to Garcia for further analysis and asked her to access the street cameras nearby as well.
“Is everything alright with you and Reid?” Garcia asked during the phone call.
“Not exactly, but we don’t have time to talk about that right now, Pen,” Jane told her.
Jane and Morgan headed back to the field office where the rest of the team was meeting. They’d already narrowed down the target area and determined the UNSUB was likely a vigilante killer, as he had targeted an alleged rapist, drug dealer, and prostitute.
The team worked to finish up the profile and delivered it before calling it a day and going out to dinner.
Bless The Broken Road - 22
A new case came in at 4am on Monday morning. Everyone was glad to see Spencer and Jane back at work and to see Spencer well again.
“This case is local. John Barker’s wife was murdered in their home. He’s a high profile lawyer here in town. Her throat was slit. His alibi checks out. He was at his office working on cases late last night,” Hotch shared with the team. “The media will be on this quickly so we need to stay ahead of them. Jane and Reid, go to the crime scene. Morgan and Rossi, talk to Barker. JJ and I will handle the press. Garcia, start looking into Barker’s cases to see if anyone recently got released or paroled from prison.”
Jane and Reid arrived at the Barker house to find that the media was already there, including Jack. A few weeks ago, he had started working at a news agency in town.
“Jack, hey!” Jane greeted, walking up and hugging her brother. “What are you doing here?”
“I’ve been assigned to cover this story. It’s my first big one! It’s with a partner though,” he explained, gesturing towards a man standing by the news van. “So can you give me any information about what happened here?”
“Not yet. There’ll be a press conference at a later time to inform the public,” Jane told him. “Now if you’ll excuse us, Spencer and I need to go examine the house.”
Spencer smiled and waved at Jack before following Jane inside to begin looking around.
“How did the intruder get in here? For such a high profile person, you’d think he’d have a security system on his home,” Spencer commented.
“He did have one,” Jane said, approaching a panel on the wall. “But it never went off.” She looked back at Spencer to find he shared her puzzled expression. Looking past him, she noticed the window was open. “Here’s his point of entry,” she stated, walking over to it. “So before she went to bed last night, she must not have armed the system.”
They made their way back to the bedroom, the main crime scene, to see a blood-stained bed.
“There’s nothing in this house that’s out of place until you get back to the bedroom,” Spencer observed. “This wasn’t a burglary. He didn’t take anything so his sole mission was to get to the wife.”
“Why the wife? Why not target Barker himself?” Jane questioned.
“It’s more torturous to kill the wife than the lawyer himself. He has to live without her now,” he suggested.
Jane turned back to the bed. “It appears that she was sleeping and caught off guard. There wasn’t much of a struggle.”
Spencer headed towards the bathroom. “There’s blood in here. He washed his knife in the sink and dried it with a towel.”
Jane stepped out and asked CSI to check the bathroom out for DNA and fingerprints.
They took one last look at the house before heading back out towards the car.
“Excuse me,” they heard a man speak from behind them. “Excuse me, can you tell me what happened here?”
Jane and Spencer turned around to see Jack’s partner approaching them.
“As I told Jack, there will be a press conference later,” Jane explained to the man.
“Oh come on, pretty thing. Give me something. Or are you not qualified to speak to me?”
Jane raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms. “Excuse me?”
Spencer touched her shoulder. “Jane, we need to get going.”
Jane agreed and they started to walk away. Before they were out of earshot, the man called out, “Yeah, go back to a desk job where you’ll fit in better!”
Jane whipped around and started walking angrily back to him.
“Jane, stop! He’s not worth it!” Spencer insisted.
She sighed, summing up all of her will power to turn back around and go to the car.
When they arrived back at the BAU, they all shared what they’d learned. Garcia had come up empty on her search and Barker was unable to think of anyone who would do this.
JJ entered the room and picked up the remote on the table. “You guys need to see this,” she told them, turning on the news.
The caption on the bottom of the screen read, “FBI agent lashes out at press” and on the screen was a picture of Jane. Jack’s partner must have taken it when she had turned back towards him.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Jane exclaimed before storming out of the room and into the bullpen. Hotch followed her out.
“You need to calm down,” he told her.
“That guy was being aggravating, ask Spencer,” she yelled.
“He was just trying to get a reaction out of you. You need to calm down. I need to know that you can do your job.”
“I can do my job.”
“Then prove it.”
She let out a huff and nodded. “OK.”
They worked into the afternoon without finding any leads.
Jack called Jane and she stepped away to answer it.
“Jane, I’m so sorry! I didn’t know he was planning on doing that. I tried to stop it before the story was released, but I just don’t have enough pull for that yet.”
“Just forget it. I don’t have time to argue with you. I’ve got a case to solve,” Jane snapped at him, hanging up before he could respond.
She ran her face through her hands in frustration.
“Agent Addison?” Jane looked up to see Anderson coming over to her. “Another lawyer, Elijah Powers, just came in. He says his wife is also missing.”
She looked past Anderson at the man sitting out by the elevators. “Notify Hotch,” she told him. “I’ll talk to him.” Jane got up and went over to Powers. “Mr. Powers, my name is Agent Addison. Please come with me.” She led him to the break room, where they could speak privately.
“I heard what happened to John Barker’s wife and I wanted to be safe so I said I’d meet her at her work for lunch. When I got there, her coworkers told me she never showed up today. She won’t answer her phone. She’s gone,” Powers grieved.
“I’ll need a description of your wife’s car so we can put an APB out on it.”
She wrote down the information then told him someone would be in to speak more to him in a few minutes before stepping out and heading to go find Garcia.
Hours later, they tracked down Powers’s wife and her car.
Hotch sent Morgan and Addison to the scene to check it out. They arrived to find that the woman’s throat had been slit.
“Damn it!” Jane shouted, walking away from the car.
“Come on, focus here, kitten,” Morgan. “Why take her in the car and kill her? Powers left for work before she did. She was home alone so why not kill her the same way as he killed Barker’s wife?”
Jane thought for a moment. “Carjacking and burglary. What if these are similar to cases of the lawyers?”
Jane pulled out her phone and called Garcia. “Garcia, look into cases in which Barker got a burglar convicted and Powers got a carjacker convicted and see if any of them are connected.”
“OK...ok! I found a father and son pair. The father was convicted of burglary and the son was convicted of carjacking.”
“Addison, you are a genius!” Morgan cheered.
“There’s more, chocolate thunder,” Garcia spoke. “The father of the pair said they did it as part of a plan to gather enough resources to run away from his abusive wife.”
“Does he have any other children?” Jane asked.
“Yes. Looks like there’s a second son who was convicted of robbing a grocery store. He also killed one of the store’s managers. They also had a daughter. She was left alone with the abusive mother after the other three went to jail.”
“That’s gotta be our UNSUB,” Morgan stated.
“Who was the lawyer on that case?” Jane questioned.
“Andrew Wallace.”
“Can you get us his wife’s phone number?”
“Can I get you his wife’s phone number? That’s a silly question. Of course, I can.”
“On a time crunch, Garcia,” Jane reminded her.
“Right, of course. Just sent it to you.”
Morgan dialed the number and spoke with the wife, only to find that she was already at the grocery store.
Shots rang out on the other end, loud enough that Jane could hear them too.
“Stay calm, we’re on our way,” he assured her.
Jane called Hotch to get the rest of the team to meet them at the store and they raced off to catch the UNSUB. When they entered the store, they found Wallace’s wife being held by the UNSUB with a gun against her temple.
Morgan stepped forward and spoke to the UNSUB, managing to get her to drop the gun. He put her in handcuffs and escorted her outside to a police car. Jane led the woman out to the ambulance to be checked out before meeting up with the rest of the team.
~ The next morning, the headline in the paper showed a story about the UNSUB’s tragic background and the difficult job of the BAU, solo written by Jack Addison.
After she finished reading the article, Jane called Jack to congratulate him.
“Jack, your article was great! And your first solo write? That’s awesome. Congratulations!”
“Thank you, Jane. That means a lot,” Jack replied.
“I also owe you an apology,” she told him. “I’m sorry I snapped at you yesterday. You had nothing to do with what your misogynist partner did.”
“It’s alright. I understand you were frustrated and I just happened to be in the line of fiery anger.”
Jane laughed. “Yeah.” ~~~
The next month, Saturday, April 10th, Jane woke up earlier than normal. She crawled out of bed, doing her best not to disturb spencer, and went out into the living room.
Turning on the TV, she found that there was a Harry Potter marathon on TV.
Jane gasped, dropping the remote on the couch and running back to the bedroom, screaming, “Spencerrrrrrr!!!!! Wake up!!!!!”
“Ahhh!” He shouted, sitting up in surprise. “Jane, what is it? What’s wrong?”
“Come on! Get up! Come look, come look!” she insisted, pulling on his arm.
He hurried out of bed to find what Jane was so excited about. Seeing the TV, he turned to her and questioned, “You woke me up because of a Harry Potter marathon on TV when we own the series?”
“But never before seen scenes!!!” Jane cheered. The smile fell off her face when she saw Spencer’s reaction. “What?”
He moved forward quickly and she screamed, running down the hall as he chased her. Eventually catching up to her, Spencer picked Jane up and took her back to the bedroom, throwing her down on the bed. Climbing on top of her, he began to tickle her, causing her to laugh uncontrollably. He leaned down and kissed her neck as she continued to giggle.
“Spencerrrr,” she spoke.
He kissed her once on the mouth then rolled off. Jane rolled onto her side and kissed him one more time.
“I love you,” she whispered.
“I love you too.” “WAIT!”
“What?!”
“Can we go watch Harry Potter now?!” she asked.
Spencer chuckled. “I guess so.”
Later in the morning, the couple got a call from Hotch.
“Yeah, we’d love that! Alright, see you then!” Jane told him before hanging up. “Hotch wants us to watch Jack for a while so he could go for a run.”
“That sounds like fun!” Spencer said, excited.
~
“Don’t worry, I’ll save you from the monster!” Jack shouted, wielding his cardboard sword.
“Oh, Jack! Hurry!” Jane cried from the corner where she was ‘trapped’.
“Roarrr!” Spencer growled.
Jack ran at him and poked him with the sword, causing him to groan dramatically and fall to the floor. Jack ran past him and pulled the loose rope off of Jane.
“My hero!” she cheered, leaning down and giving him a kiss on the cheek.
Jack shrieked and ran off. “Cooties!” he yelled.
Spencer sat up and looked at Jane. They both laughed.
“Jack, how about I make us all lunch?” Jane called out.
Jack reappeared in the doorway to the living room. “Mac and cheese?” he asked.
“Of course!”
Spencer and Jack continued to play while Jane fixed lunch. When it was ready, they took a seat at the table to eat together.
“Uncle Spencer?” Jack asked after a while of silence.
“Yeah?”
“Are you and Aunt Jane gonna get married?” Spencer looked at Jane and smiled. “Perhaps someday.”
“Why not now? You love each other, right?”
The doorbell rang, saving them from having to answer the kid’s question. Jane stood up and went to answer the door.
She came back a minute later with Hotch following in behind her.
“Hey, buddy! Did you have fun?” he asked his son.
“Yeah!”
“Thanks for watching him,” he told the pair.
“It was no trouble at all!”
Jack put his shoes on and they headed to the door.
“Have a good rest of your weekend!” Jane cheered as they left.
She shut the door then led Spencer back to the living room. They spent the rest of the day on the couch, cuddling and watching more of the Harry Potter marathon.
Bless The Broken Road - 21
The next morning, Jane decided to get up early and make a big breakfast, including pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and hash browns.
When Reid woke up, he followed the smell of food to the kitchen. He came up behind her and hugged her waist, snuggling his face into her neck.
“Good morning,” he mumbled.
“Good morning,” she chirped back. He began kissing her neck, causing her to giggle. “Stop or I’ll end up burning your breakfast,” she laughed. “Go sit down. It’s almost ready.”
“Why are you making breakfast?” he questioned as he obliged, taking a seat at the counter.
“We don’t know when we’ll get called away again so I thought we might as well make time for a nice meal before that happens.”
“Well it looks and smells delicious,” he complimented.
“Thank you.”
A few minutes later, Jane fixed both of them a plate and sat down across from him to enjoy the meal.
~~~~~
Weeks later at the end of the month, the team decided to go out on a Saturday night together.
“Jane, are you almost ready? We’re gonna be the last ones there,” Spencer called down the hall.
“Hang on!” she called back as she grabbed her shoes and headed out to the living room. “Since when do you care about when we get to the bar? I thought you’d rather spend as little time as possible there?” she argued as she took a seat on the couch to put on her shoes.
Spencer didn’t respond, distracted by how good she looked. He caught himself staring at her cleavage as she bent over to zip up her heels.
“Spence?” she questioned, looking up to see his dazed face.
“I, uh...wow,” he stammered.
She giggled and stood up to walk over to him. His hands found her waist and she wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
“You look incredible.” Jane looked down as a blush crossed her cheeks. He took one hand off her waist to lift her face up to look at him, leaning down to press his lips against hers. They kissed for a while before they had to break for air.
Breathing heavily, they rested their foreheads together. “We should get going. They’re going to wonder where we are,” Jane said.
Spencer reluctantly agreed, grabbing the keys and following her out of the apartment.
~
“Finally! You’re here!” Garcia cheered, getting up to greet the pair as they approached the rest of the team at the bar. She hugged Jane then stepped back to look at her. “And you look stunning!”
“Not as sexy as you!” Jane replied, grinning.
“Oh stop,” Garcia gushed.
“Come sit down!” Morgan called.
They joined the table and ordered a couple of drinks for the new arrivals. The team sat, drank, and talked. Spencer kept his eyes on Jane practically the whole night. Under the table, he put a hand on her leg and squeezed it. She turned to him and gave him a smile.
At one point, Jane offered to go to the bar to get another round of drinks for everybody. She returned grinning a few minutes later.
“Guess who just scored us all a round of free drinks,” she cheered.
“How’d you manage that?” Spencer asked.
“Isn’t it obvious? Look at her!” Garcia said. “She’s so hot!”
“And all yours,” Jane told him, giving him a kiss on the cheek, leaving a lipstick stain.
They stayed for a few more hours, taking a few more drinks, before getting a taxi ride back home.
Once home, Spencer took Shortstack outside while Jane slipped off her heels and went into the bathroom to wash the makeup off her face.
By the time he came back in, she had wiped her face clean and was exiting the bathroom.
“Spencer, can you help me unzip my dress?” Jane asked, a little too buzzed to get it herself.
“S-sure,” he answered, moving behind her to help.
He unzipped it then stood there, breathing heavily. She turned her head to look towards him over her shoulder and he caught her lips with his. She turned around to face him and deepened the kiss, letting her dress fall to the floor.
Jane worked to get Spencer’s clothes off as well. Once they were strewn across the floor, they moved over to the bed and Jane laid down, Spencer moving on top of her. He bent down and kissed her before looking into her eyes.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” he asked.
She kissed him again, answering between kisses, “Yes I do. I love you, Spencer.”
“I love you, too, Jane.”
~
Jane woke up the next morning to Spencer drawing circles on her back.
“Good morning,” he greeted her.
She moved to kiss him. “Good morning,” she repeated.
Out in the living room, they heard Shortstack barking, wanting to go outside.
Jane groaned.
“We better let him out. It’s later in the morning than he’s used to,” Spencer said.
“Yeah, I guess so,” Jane agreed.
Spencer got up and threw some clothes on before exiting the room to take Shortstack out.
Jane got up as well, putting on new underwear from her drawer and slipping one of Spencer’s shirts on on top of them. Hearing a knock at the front door, she went to go answer it, assuming it was Spencer. “Did you get locked out?” she questioned as she opened the door, only to find Morgan standing there instead.
”Whoa,” he breathed.
”Oh my god, Morgan. What are you doing here?” Jane asked, trying to hide behind the door as much as possible.
He held up a wallet. “Pretty boy forgot his wallet last night, but I can see now that he was a little too preoccupied to realize he left it.” ”Come in,” Jane told him, flustered. “I’m going to go put some real clothes on.”
She headed back towards the bedroom. Behind her, she could hear Morgan say, “Mmmhmm.”
She looked back to see him watching her. “Don’t stare at me!”
He chuckled and apologized, “Sorry, baby doll.”
”And don’t call me that when I’m barely clothed.” By the time Jane came back out, now dressed in jeans and a sweater, Spencer was back with Shortstack.
She saw Morgan clap him on the back and heard him say, “My man!” Spencer’s face turned red.
Jane, also still flushed, interrupted the exchange. “Do you want to stay for lunch, Morgan?”
“What are you cooking?”
“I don’t know yet. You’ll just have to stick around and see,” she told him.
Morgan accepted the invitation and Jane got busy cooking. She decided on making quesadillas. After lunch, Morgan went home.
“My god, that was embarrassing,” Jane told Spencer once they were alone again.
“What?”
“I opened the door thinking it was you and I was only wearing underwear and one of your shirts,” she confessed.
“Well, that explains how he knew what happened last night.”
“I wonder how long it’ll take before Penelope calls or texts me. He’s bound to tell her,” Jane said.
“Maybe she’ll wait until Monday to bring it up in person,” he suggested.
~~~
Sure enough, Garcia did wait until Monday.
Jane was heading to the break room to refill her coffee and ran into Garcia along the way.
“Good morning, Pen. How was your weekend?” Jane asked.
They walked together to the break room. Garcia let Jane enter first before going in herself and shutting the door behind them.
“OK. We have to talk about what happened Saturday night,” Garcia said.
“So Morgan told you,” Jane replied.
“I need to know the details! Tell me everything! Give me the dirty details!”
“I’m not going to tell you everything!” Jane insisted. “I’m sure Spencer doesn’t want me sharing the ‘dirty details’. So out of respect, I’m not sharing.”
“Alright,” Garcia sighed, disappointed. “I respect you respecting that.”
Morgan entered the room. “Oh hey there, baby doll,” he laughed, using the nickname Jane had scolded him for using yesterday morning.
Jane said hey then made an excuse about having lots of paperwork to finish in order to get away from him and Garcia.
A couple of hours later, Jane had finished all of her paperwork and was reading a book to pass the time until lunch.
“Hey, Jane,” Reid spoke as he approached her desk.
“Hang on,” she told him, holding a hand up. “I’m almost done with the chapter.”
He waited a few seconds before asking, “Are you done yet?”
“No. I don’t read 20,000 words per minute like you do,” she pointed out. “Hang on!” She took another minute before closing the book and saying, “OK, done.”
“Are you hungry? If so, want to go get lunch?” Spencer asked.
“Sure,” Jane accepted. “Where do you wanna go? Wait, I know, Indian food?”
Spencer grinned. “You know me so well.”
She stood up, took his hand, and headed out for lunch.
~~~~~
“So, Valentine's Day is coming up,” Spencer spoke up one day while he and Jane were taking a break from paperwork to hang out at her desk.
“Mmhmm,” Jane said, less than enthused.
“You don’t seem that excited,” Spencer pointed out.
Jane shrugged and leaned back in her chair. “I just don’t think there needs to be a day for people to show they love their loved ones. It shouldn’t be forced just because it’s a certain day of the year. It should be because they want to do it, just because,” Jane explained her views.
“Oh, yeah,” Spencer replied, dejected. “I guess you’re right.”
“Spence, what’s wrong?” she asked, reaching out to take his hand.
“I agree with you that you should want to show you love someone and shouldn’t be forced to. But I think it’s a good excuse to do something extra special. And this year is the first time I finally have someone to share that day with,” he shared.
Jane smiled and bit her lip. “Well, what did you have in mind?” she asked.
Before he could divulge his ideas, Garcia came by. “I hate to break up your couple chat but we have a case,” she told them. Jane sighed and looked back at Spencer. “To be continued,” she told him, standing up to head to the briefing room.
“Leave your winter coats on the jet, my folks. Once you leave D.C. you won’t be needing them anymore as you are all heading to sunny Arizona,” Garcia told the team as she began the briefing. “Three people, two men and one woman, have been found in the desert nailed to crosses. They all were wearing robes and crowns of thorns.”
“Clearly has to do with religion,” Rossi stated. “What’s he trying to say?”
“Jesus died for people’s sins. Maybe he’s killing people for their wrongdoings,”  Jane suggested.
Hotch told them they should get going, as it’d be a long flight. The team stood and moved to get ready to leave.
Once they arrived, Jane and Reid headed to the coroner. The others divided up between talking to the families of the victims and setting up at the police station.
Given information on the types of nails, wooden boards, and crown of thorns, Garcia searched for people who had purchased those specific items, concluding that many people use that kind of wood and nails but came up empty on the crown of thorns.
The next day, another body was found.
Spencer stared at the board, trying to connect the dots between the victims.
“I think I know what the connection is,” he told Jane, still keeping his eyes trained on the board.
“Go on,” Jane urged him.
“Each of the victims could have been perceived to have broken one of the ten commandments.”
“OK, you may be right, but that’d be hard to judge when people break them. It’s fairly easy to break some of them. Do not lie, do not say the Lord’s name in vain,” Jane pointed out. “Plus, he’s breaking the do not kill commandment himself.” “What if that’s his end game, to kill himself?”
Jane paused. “OK, you’re probably right. I’ve been thinking about the crowns he places on the victims. What if he works in herbology?”
“That’d narrow the list down,” Spencer agreed with a nod.
Together, they pieced together the profile before filling in the rest of the team.
~
They were able to find the UNSUB but were unsuccessful in stopping him from killing himself.
On the flight home, Spencer moved to join Jane by her window seat. He took her hand in his.
Jane looked down at their hands and smiled as he rubbed the back of hers with his thumb.
“So...” he said.
“So...” Jane repeated.
“I was thinking it’d be pretty great to go on a trip over Valentine’s weekend. Since it’s on a Sunday, why not make a weekend of it?” Spencer suggested.
“Where would we go?” she questioned.
“Mexico.” “Really? Spence, you hate the beach,” she argued.
“There’s plenty else to do there besides the beach. I just thought it’d be nice to get out of the cold.”
“Why not go to the typical places: Paris, Rome, Barcelona?”
Spencer paused a moment in thought. “Alright, how about this: we’ll each think about it and in a couple of days we’ll come up with a top 3 list and the highest average between the two will be where we go?”
“Sounds like a plan.”
~~~
When they got together with their lists, they found that the highest rated destination between the pair was London.
Hotch was gracious enough to give the couple Friday through Monday off and let them leave early Thursday to have plenty of time to catch their 8pm flight out.
Jack agreed to watch Shortstack while they were gone.
On the flight across the pond, they both decided to sleep in order to get their sleep for the night. The time change between the two places was five hours so they were be getting there around 8 in the morning London time.
After getting settled into the hotel, Jane and Spencer set off to start exploring the city and all of its tourist attractions. It was great to get to travel and actually enjoy it for once, as opposed to only be traveling for a case.
Jane’s favorite part, of course, was going to the Harry Potter Studio Tour. She also made Spencer take her to King’s Cross station to get her picture taken with the Platform 9 3/4 sign.
Spencer was also able to get his nerdy fix, however, as they were able to go see some locations for Dr. Who while there as well.
On Sunday, actual Valentine’s Day, they spent the morning down by the river. They walked hand in hand along the shore, enjoying a peaceful morning, until something caught their eye up ahead.
“What’s that up there?” Jane questioned, pointing ahead of them.
“I don’t know. It looks like a body,” Spencer spoke cautiously.
They hastened their pace and approached it.
“Damn,” Jane breathed, kneeling down beside the body. She found his wrist to search for a pulse but found none.
“Jane, there’s strangulation marks on his neck,” Spencer said.
“It looks like someone tried to dump the body but it got washed up here,” Jane stated.
“We have to report this.”
Jane sighed and pulled out her phone as she stood back up. “On it.”
When the police arrived, they asked Spencer and Jane to come in for questioning on what they’d found.
“I’m sorry this had to happen on today of all days,” Spencer apologized.
“It’s not your fault,” Jane insisted.
“This trip was going so well and some murderer just had to go and ruin it.”
Spencer and Jane waited in a room for a while before a woman with long, dark hair came in.
“Spencer!” She greeted with a smile.
“Oh my god, Emily!” His eyes widened in surprise as he moved to embrace the woman.
“When I heard two FBI agents found the body, I didn’t think it’d be someone I knew!” she said, stepping back. “It’s so good to see you!”
“Likewise!”
“What are you doing in London?”
Spencer moved to stand beside Jane again. “Emily, this is Dr. Jane Addison, my girlfriend and fellow member of the BAU. We were here for the weekend to celebrate Valentine’s day,” he explained. “Jane, this is Emily Prentiss. She’s the unit chief for Interpol right now, but she used to be a member of the BAU. You actually filled her position when you joined.”
“It’s great to meet you,” Jane told Emily. “I just wish it was under better circumstances.”
“Why exactly are you here?” Spencer questioned.
“The victim displays an MO that matches that of an UNSUB that’s been on our radar for a while,” Emily explained. “Five years ago, we believe this man started killing in Washington state before traveling the U.S. for around three and a half years. The FBI was on his trail, but he escaped to Europe and the case went cold. He resurfaced in France months later and now we believe he’s in London,” Emily briefed them. “I know you’re on vacation, but I could really use your help on this case. It’s up to you though.”
Spencer took out his phone. “Let me call Hotch and get him to assemble the team,” he said as he headed out of the room.
While out of the room, Emily apologized to Jane for ruining their Valentine’s Day.
“It’s alright. I think Spence is more upset about it than I am,” Jane admitted.
Spencer returned to inform them that the team would be there in the morning.
“Great! Why don’t you two enjoy the rest of your day and I’ll see you tomorrow,” Emily said.
Spencer and Jane agreed before leaving.
The two decided to head to lunch at a little cafe. Jane watched as Spencer picked at his food with his fork.
“Spence, talk to me,” she told him.
He looked up in surprise then back down at his food.
“I just can’t believe our luck. I thought if a case were to come up, it’d be one back home and maybe Hotch would let us join them later. But no, we just had to stumble upon a case here in London,” he grumbled.
“It can’t be helped now,” she told him, reaching out to grab his hand. “Besides, we still have the rest of the day. Emily doesn’t want us back until tomorrow.”
“That’s true.”
“So what do you say we go see some last minute sites this afternoon and then later tonight we can spend some time back at the hotel,” she suggested.
“You want to spend our last night of vacation in our hotel room?” he questioned.
“Well, it is Valentine’s Day and so I thought maybe we could...” she trailed off.
“Oh... oh!” he replied, catching on.
“Yeah,” she chuckled. “So, what do you say?”
He set down his fork and pushed his chair back. “Let’s go.”
Jane giggled as he took her hand and led her out of the cafe.
~
In the morning, Jane and Spencer met the rest of the BAU team at London’s Interpol office. Emily was already going around greeting her former teammates when they entered the room.
Not wasting any time, they set to work on the case.
“Do we know if they took a sample of the water in the victim's lungs?” Jane asked.
“I don’t believe they have,” Emily replied.
“Jane, you head to the coroner to get a sample of the water and examine it. JJ and Rossi, talk to the parents of the newest victim. Morgan and I will check out the victim’s house. Garcia, try to find a connection between the victims and Reid, start working on the geographical profile,” Hotch ordered.
Once Jane was done at the coroner, she met up with Garcia and Reid.
“I can’t find any connections between the victims. It appears that they’re random victims of opportunity,” Garcia shared.
“I’ve made a timeline of the kills on a map,” Spencer stated, gesturing at the board. Jane moved closer to him to look at his work. She stood in front of him, and he caught a whiff of her perfume. “You smell good,” he told her softly.
She whipped around and hit him gently. “Stop it. We’re at work. We need to focus.”
Behind them, Garcia giggled.
”The water in the lungs was not a match to the river water. It was tap water,” she told the pair. “It seems like he drowned the victims, revived them, strangled them, then dumped their bodies in a body of water.” ”Let me look to see if the victims in each city were near any bodies of water,” Garcia said, tapping away at the table. “Negative.”
The others filed back into the room and shared their information.
”Parents of the victim said that he was loved but he was also a strict team captain on his community soccer team,” Rossi shared.
”Wait a sec,” Garcia said. She began typing again. “It looks like all of the victims’ loved ones said something about them being strict.”
”So he’s going after strict people?” Morgan questioned.
Reid looked to the map. “Not exactly. It looks like the first victim in each city was a father. So he’s triggered by a father and then he generalizes to all strict people.”
”Looks like we have a profile,” Emily stated. “We need to find a name. Garcia, look into cases in Washington state dealing with child endangerment, water, and strangling.” ”OK, I found an article from 20 years ago. 10-year-old Daniel Porter almost drowned and had to be revived by a lifeguard. His father was so angry with him that he took him away from the pool and choked him. Two guys saw him and pulled him off the poor boy. He had to go to the ER and everything,” Garcia read.
”Where’s the father at now?” Hotch asked.
Garcia searched. “He died five years ago.”
”That’s the trigger,” Rossi stated.
”I’ll get a press release sent out and inform all cops and border patrol,” Emily told them.
“We need to find Porter’s location,” Hotch told Garcia.
“He fell off of the face of the Earth shortly before the killings started,” Garcia explained.
The team continued to work, trying to narrow down a location on Porter.
The next day, another body was found which ultimately led to the finding of Porter’s location.
Once he was apprehended, the team headed back to Interpol to say their goodbyes to Emily.
“It was so great to meet you,” Emily told Jane as she gave her a hug.
“You as well! I hope to see you again sometime,” Jane told her.
“Likewise. Probably at yours and Reid’s wedding,” Emily suggested with a smile. “Hopefully that won’t be that long of a wait.”
Jane laughed. “We’ll see.”
~
The team headed home on the jet.
“On the bright side, we didn’t have to pay for a commercial flight home,” Jane told Spencer, cuddling into his side, getting comfortable for the long flight.
When they got home to their apartment, Jack was there with Shortstack. Spencer took Shortstack outside so Jane could talk to her brother.
“I’ve decided I want to become a journalist,” Jack shared with her. “I’ve been an editor for so long. It’s time to write my own articles.”
“Well, that’s great, Jack! I could talk to JJ for you and see about getting contacts with people who work in the press who might be able to help you with any questions you have about the job and how to apply for a job,” she offered.
“That would be great. Thank you!” he said. “Oh, and I’ve also started seeing a therapist to help with my mood swings.”
“That’s good!”
“Yeah! I feel like it’s really going well!”
Jane stepped forward and embraced him. “I’m so proud of you.”
Spencer and Shortstack came back inside and Jane bid Jack goodnight.
~~~~~
Weeks later, Wednesday, March 10th, Spencer woke up in the morning and pulled Jane close to him. She groaned and opened her eyes as she felt him start to kiss her neck.
“Cut it out,” Jane giggled. “You’re making me want to stay in bed but you and I both know we have to get to work.”
“Alright, alright,” he mumbled into her neck before releasing her from his arms so she could get up.
When they got to work, they rode up the elevator to the BAU’s floor. The elevator opened up and another worker from a different floor got on. As he stood next to Spencer, he sneezed and coughed practically the whole time. The man finally exited on his floor. Once the doors were shut again, Spencer began freaking out.
“Oh my god, that was absolutely disgusting. Just great. Now I’m going to get sick!” he complained.
“Oh, calm down. It’s not that likely that you’d get sick just from that!” Jane told him.
“The average cough expels about 20,000 viruses,” he stated.
“But we don’t know if he was even contagious,” Jane pointed out. “You don’t know for sure, so why freak out if it could be nothing!”
As they continued to argue, they arrived at the BAU and came across Rossi.
“Rossi, please tell him that he’s overreacting and isn’t going to get sick from being coughed on,” Jane said, getting the older man’s attention.
“I agree with Jane. It’s gross, but it’s nothing to worry about,” he told him.
“See!”
Spencer mumbled something inaudible under his breath and walked off to his desk.
By the next afternoon, Spencer was sniffling and coughing frequently.
“You’re not fooling me,” Jane told him as she passed his desk.
“I’m not fake-” he paused to cough. “I’m not faking it,” he insisted. He began coughing violently.
“OK, you really aren’t faking it,” she realized. “Gather your things. I’m telling Hotch I’m taking you home.”
Once she got him home, she ordered him to change into sweats and lay down on the couch. Before he could do so, he made a dash to the bathroom and vomited into the toilet. Jane followed after him and held his hair back.
When he was finished, she stood up and rummaged through the cabinet for a thermometer. Spencer stood as well and washed his mouth out in the sink. She handed him the thermometer to stick in his mouth when he was ready. When it beeped, she took it out and read the results.
“101. Yup, you have a fever. Go change and lay down on the couch.”
While he worked on getting comfortable, Jane pulled some socks out of the drawer and ran them under cool water. She then grabbed a glass of water from the kitchen before going out to the living room.
Spencer hissed as she slipped the wet socks on his feet.
“I’m sorry. But this should help bring down your fever,” she insisted. She then moved to the TV and turned on Dr. Who for him. “Alright, try to get some rest. Let me know if you need anything else.”
“Janey?” She paused and looked back at him. “Can you stay?”
Jane considered it for a moment then sighed and nodded. “Alright, but if you get me sick, you have to take care of me.”
“Deal,” he agreed.
Jane sat down and pulled him to her, stroking his hair.
Hours later, Spencer had to run to the bathroom to vomit again.
Jane followed and held his hair back like before. When he moved to get back up afterward, he nearly fell over so Jane lead him to sit on the bathroom floor. She sat next to him.
“Ugh,” Spencer groaned. “I feel so gross. I need a shower but I’m not so sure I can stand long enough to take one.”
“I could help you,” Jane offered.
“No, you don’t have to do that.”
“It’ll make you feel better.” “I feel like a child.”
“Hey, I know how you feel. I felt the same way when I was hurt and you had to help me with things,” Jane pointed out. “We all need help sometimes and that’s OK.” She paused for a moment. “Do you trust me?”
He locked eyes with her. “Yes,” he assured her.
“Then start stripping.”
Jane helped him stand up and then went to the tub to get the water ready. As it heated up, she turned back to see Spencer struggling to keep his balance while taking his pants off.
“Sit,” she told him, guiding him over to the toilet. She knelt down in front of him and helped remove his pants while he pulled off his shirt himself. “What’s more comfortable, with or without underwear?” she asked.
“Whatever’s better for you.”
“Spence, I don’t care. It’s not like we haven’t seen each other naked before. Now, what do you want?”
“Without,” he said after pausing a moment. Jane undressed too, as it’d be better than getting her clothes soaking wet, and then helped him climb into the shower.
“I can help you wash your hair, but you’re going to have to kneel so I can reach better,” she told him.
He obliged and kneeled in front of her. As she massaged his head, he let out a moan. Had Spencer not been sick, it could’ve easier turned sexual, however, right now Jane needed to focus on helping him get cleaned up.
When they were done in the shower, Jane helped him dry off and put on PJs before doing the same herself.
As they climbed under the covers for the night, Spencer pulled Jane close. “Thanks for everything,” he mumbled into her hair. “I love you.”
“You’re welcome. And I love you too.”
~
The next day, they spent the whole day on the couch resting. By the end of the weekend, Spencer was able to get better and Jane managed to avoid getting sick.
