They both skip fifth period; meet at the smokers' bench. Dylan has his cigarettes and Eric takes one; glances around to make sure no one is watching; lets Dylan light it for him. Dylan pulls Eric's yearbook out of his booksack; slides it across the worn wooden top of the bench, scattered with years' worth of names carved in with pens, knives, or nail files. "First half of your present, done," he says. "Happy birthday, Reb."

Eric laughs when he opens the book to the end. Dylan's signature has taken up four full pages, complete with (admittedly decent-ish) drawings and all the stupid little references they've built up since August when Dylan unexpectedly started wanting to spend more time at Eric's house.

My wrath for January's incident will be godlike, says one line, and Eric nods, pointing at it, tilting his head at Dylan, stubbing out his cigarette on the concrete supports of the bench. At home he's got some of the ingredients (he's pretty sure) make up napalm. Dylan said he could get the rest on Saturday; his mom thinks he's going to Zach's to work on some theater shit. He'll come over after, in his BMW he and his dad fixed up. Eric's mom will let him in through the front door, and Dylan will give her one of those shy, crooked smiles that make people think he's harmless.

"Just one more year, V," Eric says, slowly running his thumb over the drawing of Fly and Arlene's shuttle approaching Deimos.

"Yeah," Dylan murmurs back, exhaling smoke slowly out towards the east.

Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?*

this is a tough one! i don't think so, though; i'm pretty set in my ways when it comes to pairings i hate, haha. the closest i guess is i used to be pretty indifferent towards batman and voldemort until one day i realized bruce wayne and tom riddle are the people under those monikers, and both of them are actually quite interesting. so then from there i was able to start shipping batjokes, tomarry, and tombraxas

it also worked for heath's joker, bc the dark knight is the only batman media i consume and for years the joker was my fav villain but i couldn't Connect with him the way i can now; but then again i don't know if that counts bc i came to the realization that the joker is human and has human needs (i.e. sleep) on my own, and from there built a backstory for him and made him a person who i then wanted to ship with bruce (the person with a relatable face, not batman, the entity with a mask). idk if any of that counts tho lol so if not, we can just say no

Is there anything you used to like but can’t stand now?*

actually this answer piggybacks off the answer(s) i gave to #1 here; i used to be super into destiel when i first watched supernatural, i was convinced it would go canon, i rly only started watching the show for cas bc i thought he would be a way bigger part of it than he actually was (although i did start watching from s1; i remember a lot of ppl just started in s4 bc that's when the angel arc first happens). i was heavily into destiel for about a year or so and then my friend and i started writing a lot of private samifer fics for each other and the side pairing we used was michean (michael/dean). i think between that and my waning enjoyment of cas as a character/my growing dislike of misha collins as a person/my overall waning interest in the show, i kind of started falling away from destiel; and then iirc i had another friend around that time who was heavily anti-destiel and i read this super in-depth essay she'd written on why it doesn't work as a pairing and i was sold from that point on

i also used to love tony stark, loki, and the frostiron pairing for mcu; i can't stand tony anymore and i'm indifferent to loki and frostiron overall. and i liked stucky for a while back in '21 when i got back into mcu via htp, but i'm just kinda like 'meh' abt it now; i don't rly think i hate it exactly and i still have a bunch of stucky fics bookmarked from back then but overall it's like...... whatever

i got a little anon hate when i was into spn bc i loved samifer, and ppl would come at me saying lucifer and hallucifer were the same person/had treated sam badly/etc. and i was like ummm no, and also here are the receipts. i remember it pissing me off a lot at the time and getting under my skin, but it wasn't as bad as the hate i got when i was into cegan (carl/negan) from the walking dead. that was the first time i got called a pedophile and i remember once answering an ask about it with the actual definition of pedophilia, and it got like 100+ notes from all my cegan friends, lmao. that was also one of the only times i've ever blocked someone bc this girl kept harassing me when i'd write cegan fics, commenting on them and calling me disgusting. i don't block liberally but that was too much and she stayed blocked until i lost astralhux last year

the worst anon hate i've ever gotten, though, is def from my current fandom. the first ask i ever got about it was hate from someone saying i was a loser bc i was thirty years old and into you-know-what, but the anon used the wrong "you're" so i responded correcting them and it got a lot of notes, which was nice bc i'm weak for internet validation :') about half of the anon hate i got after that was re: my age and being too old to be into the case, and the other half was re: my age and being a pedo bc i like eric. it's been uh..... def an Experience, lmao. and i think in a way it's not just limited to tumblr; since all of reddit is anonymous by default, i get anon hate there as well; i'm into the case in the wrong way, i'm wrong for sympathizing with them, i'm wrong for writing fic, i'm wrong for disliking eric's dad, i'm just wrong overall. it doesn't surprise me anymore but it will never not baffle me how polarizing it is and how like........ opinionated it makes ppl. like chill, maybe? go have some ice-cream or smth, damn

for marvel, definitely steve/tony would have to be #1. i've hated it since 2012 when i was into an entirely different section of the mcu and i will hate it until my dying day! they're bland together and honestly they're both pretty bland apart -- i did used to have a huge Thing for tony back in the day (see: all the frostiron i wrote from june 2012 to january 2013, lmao) but i don't care for him anymore and i've never been overly fond of steve (except right after civil war came out i remember being very staunchly team cap, but anyway)

other fandoms i've been active in/enjoyed the source material: brienne/jaime, dean/cas, cas/meg, rey/ren. that last one is a BIG one and honestly prob should've listed it first before steve/tony even, but fuck it. i cannot stand that ship lmao. the rabid fans made me absolutely loathe it as time went on but like, even right after tfa came out i remember looking on tumblr and seeing that it was a Thing and being like uhh, what? bc adam driver and daisy ridley have zero chemistry and did Not play it like there was sexual tension, romantic tension, or any other kind of shippable tension. it just fucking baffles me beyond comprehension. it's like walking into a bakery and seeing that their top selling item is a fucking....... idk, fancy caviar spread

omg ok i started out very tentatively saying yes to this bc i wasn't positive, but as i typed i remembered that it is a Definite Yes, lmao. i had to unfollow like, 98% of my friends when i was into supernatural bc they all hated lucifer and would reblog posts that talked shit abt him, or they would talk shit abt him in their tags, or they would talk shit abt his relationship with sam in the tags, and i just couldn't handle it haha. there prob have been others over the years but that's the biggest one i can think of off the top of my head

oof. okay to save time let's just list the two i'm most active in lmao. for mcu....... well, idk if this is even an opinion so much as a fact, but i have zero interest in watching anything that's come out since civil war. in fact i haven't watched anything EXCEPT winter soldier in like..... close to a decade. i know a lot of my friends have seen the newer movies (endgame, antman, etc.) and are into the shows, but i just don't give a fuck. i stopped caring abt mcu for a longgggggg time and when i got back into it four years ago it was only for ws, and that's the way it's been ever since. i like the gritty political thriller and the realism of it all. it's like the dark knight for marvel. all the big flashy CGI battles and shit is just too much. i remember going to see dr. strange with my mom in the theater and literally being unable to follow the plot bc there was just so. fucking. much. cgi. and i know ppl who act like they have to keep up with the shows/movies/etc. and it's like no?? you really don't???? lmao. like, obv if you WANT to that's one thing, but you're not contractually obligated to or w/e

for the (secret, third) fandom which shall not be named here (not unlike voldemort!), my unpopular opinions are based on which part of the internet i'm on. if i'm on the subreddits about the case it's that fanworks related to one or both boys (fanfiction, fanart, etc.) are completely fine; there's nothing wrong with creative expression even of such a sensitive topic. there's also nothing wrong with romanticization/glorification/etc. it's all good. ppl's brains work differently and everyone looks at/understands different controversial shit in different ways

if i'm on tumblr my unpopular opinion is that adults are allowed to like the case AND be attracted to one or both boys; i don't agree with ppl who hold the opinion that the latter is wrong, but i can at least see where they're coming from with it; but for the former it's like the reylo thing. it just makes no sense to me. adults aren't allowed to have interests outside of their jobs? as soon as i turned eighteen i was supposed to magically quit liking dark, edgy shit? whoops, guess i rly fucked up on that front! /s. i've gotten more shit over both sets of unpopular opinions for the secret fandom than i've ever gotten for any other fandom i've ever been in. and i've always shipped the less popular/more controversial pairings. so that's been.............. a lot. but it's fine :,,,)

so ig technically this is cheating bc i did post about this several times on my old blog, astralhux, but since we no longer have those records (ri-fuckin-p) and i last posted about it probably close to ten years ago (?) i think it's okay if i say it again: i go through phases where i get rly fucking weird about my gender. it's very difficult to explain but ideally, if circumstances were totally different, i'd be trans. or hell, if i could've chosen i would've just been born a man and save us all some time; but in any case....... idk. it comes and goes in intensity and i have a lot of complicated hangups about it bc i feel like i'm just faking it (since i can't commit to one or the other and have zero intention to ever transition formally for various reasons). plus my ex kind of.... idk, i don't want to say she invalidated it exactly but she certainly didn't put in the bare minimum of effort to call me by the pronouns i was asking her to

ANYWAY. yeah. that's a thing and unfortunately it's probably always going to be a thing. and as much as i beat myself up for it and tell myself i'm faking it/fetishizing it/whatever, there are moments where it feels like it has to be real.... the last time it got really bad was a couple years ago and i was talking to a girl i know and she said everything i described was way more intense and legit sounding than the little gender envy she'd experienced. and that made me feel really fucking good, so idk. it's shit like that. but it's all good; it won't change, and i'm not super pressed about it

honestly, since getting into the you-know-what case, i've learned that people are going to think what they think and nothing you say or do is going to change their minds. like, that's something i knew from before, but getting into this thing and specifically in the way i've gotten into it has made me see just how like....... close-minded and weirdly hypocritical people are when it comes to certain situations (esp discussions re: good and evil). it's very rare that someone says "yes, i want to hear your side of things" and actually means it/is willing to adjust their own perception of things according to whatever you say

it is not wrong to love the villain. it is not morally bad, evil, or heinous. yes, even if you love villains that are real (like my current fandom, which i will not say here bc i'm not trying to lose this blog too, but y'all know what i mean). it is not wrong to see the good and bad in a person, to recognize that they are capable of both in equal measure, and to see the justification for their bad actions as well as the sincerity of whatever good they have done. it is not wrong to sympathize with the villain; it is not wrong to recognize their traits in yourself. it's not wrong to write a fic about a bad guy and make him happy

🍅 ⇢ give yourself some constructive criticism on your own writing

i rly need to learn how to like... find the balance in pacing. sometimes i hit a good stride with it but most of the time i feel like i'm rushing scenes and then dragging other ones out too long. so the fic is like a really exhausting stop-and-start traffic jam where a good few miles i can go 70 mph but then suddenly i'm back to being bumper-to-bumper with a honda for like an hour and a half. (although depending on whose honda it is i rly wouldn't complain abt that, huehue.)

as you can see from these answers alone i have a massive tendency to ramble and it carries over into my writing a lot, esp with longer fics. i call it the stephen king syndrome and i don't think it's a necessarily bad thing in most situations but stuff gets away from me really easily if i'm not paying attn or if i'm trying to make a point but the point keeps evolving. i've been trying to rein it in the last couple of years and i feel like to an extent i've succeeded, but i also feel like sometimes i'm trying too hard? so then i end up cutting scenes too short or not including enough in the dialogue/narrative/whatever to get my point across. idk. like i said, i just need to find that sweet middle ground. i def think i'm better at it now, though, than even just three or four years ago when every single fucking sentence i wrote was peppered with 'and' every three seconds. like girl, chill, lmao

agh. i've been thinking about this for days and i honestly have no idea?? i guesssssssss in the broadest definition of the word "weird" i would have to go with the days i spent researching rabies for we choose the sounds you make, which was a very fun fic to write and research for, even tho prob 99% of ppl wouldn't think so? (or maybe they would. idk.) i watched a ton of videos on youtube of ppl who had rabies and i looked at the wiki article like six hundred million times, the fic kind of ended up being a partial science lesson on the whole thing, it was great. but i guess by average standards it was def weird

honestly kinda sick of this question bc i see it every three hours on the ao3 subreddit but in terms of not even clicking on the fic in the first place, i'd say anything in the tags or summary like "i'm bad at tagging/summaries" or "idk just read it," or anything that shows the author doesn't care about their subject and is just writing it to be ironic (this mainly applies in my current fandom). if i click into a fic and then click away it would be from poor formatting, bad grammar/spelling, or extreme mischaracterization
