The White Lotus s3 finale thoughts (/Nicola plans her sixth novel based on where she wishes the show had gone)

(I am already writing my fourth novel and my fifth novel is going to be my figure skating thriller omggg, so my next open slot for an incest thriller is number six -- just for the record)

Hmmmmm. I had Concerns based upon hearing that the show filmed different versions of the Full Moon Threesome (ie versions where Lochy didn't jerk off Saxon) that perhaaaaaps incest was not as central to the narrative as I had assumed/hoped.

I don't think it was quite the Random Sprinkling of Taboo that many people are taking it to be, but I think it ended up being more of character note than an actual story arc, and therefore it paid off in rather understated ways (Saxon wanting more than cheap sex? I guess? Lochy learning that the person he needs to please is himself?).

I thought the finale was Fine. I certainly am happy Lochy lived, because it would have been a bummer if only the Incest Instigator got narratively punished with death. (Don't worry, this show only punishes optimistic women with death, wahahahahacries.) It also means there will be approximately one million post-WL SaxLoch fics and I will read every single one of them.

However! Honestly, I'm frustrated at how little the show managed to do with a rich narrative seam. I was frustrated in exactly the same way by The Fosters, (if you'll join me in my time machine,) which stubbornly refused to exploit the most narratively juicy aspect of incest stories, which is:

That's it!!!! That's the motive. That's the killer. That's the be all and fucking end all.

People find out and Lochy can't stand for his sister/his dad/his mom to disapprove of him.

People find out and Saxon can't stand the idea of being the subject of gossip at the country club for every day of the rest of his fucking life.

I have a long, long, long list of murder motives on my computer, which is weird but maybe less weird when you know I write mysteries, and one of them is "killing to protect a secret".

What's the most potent secret? Incest!

Sigh. This storyline really captured the viewing audience and I wish it had lived up to its potential. Still, it made me want to write something where incest really is the motivator and the grenade.

Anyway, goodnight sweet prince aka WL s3. I enjoyed my whirlwind with you over the last week. I haven't vibed with a scripted TV show in literally years, so this was nice. See you on the next one, Mike White.

(A final postscript: I started a full series rewatch of The Amazing Race a few months ago, because it is the very epitome of Brain So Smoooooth TV for me. It's absolutely hilarious that just in the last week I coincidentally hit s14 of the show, which is the one where Mike White competes with his father. Sample quote, while rolling enormous cheese wheels down a hill: "Don't let me get hit by a cheese!")
