Chapter 3: Second Chance

Part 1

Hello everyone again and welcome back to my Trigun post-canon doujinshi Don't Miss Me!! This chapter isn't gonna be a simple one, but I'm very excited to finally share it with y'all!! I loved drawing it, hope you will like it as well :3

This first part is the perfect summary of how I feel like they acted in canon: kinda flirting during their journey, never acting on what they felt but letting it festering in their mind, slowly marinating until they both did or said something completely out of their normalcy. Showing care and love by simple and silent gestures, both knowing too well what that means but both thinking of being completely unlovable monsters.

These idiots.

Wolfwood pukes on Nai’s doorstep.

It’s a testament to Nai’s uncanny patience when the man simply watches the whole progression of the hunter emptying the contents of his stomach with a look of nebulous disgust; an emotion suggested through the almost indiscernible curl of his upper lip, that of which could also be mistaken for someone schooling their face into one of disinterest. Otherwise, he hardly spares any attention to the mess before a flick of his wrist clears it out.

So while the hunter is still hunched by the doorframe and clutching his stomach, wheezing with a very contrite Vash massaging the middle of his back, Nai sweeps past them. “Come in when your friend’s done,” he says, leaving the grand doors open.

“Fuh— fuck you, actually,” comes Wolfwood’s gurgled response.

“I’m sorry, Wolfwood, I’m really sorry!” Vash is saying. “I’ll give you a tonic, I’ll—”

“All good, needles,” Wolfwood tries to pat Vash’s cheek in reassurance. “Just— warn a guy next time you decide to take a shortcut through the air, would ya?”

And while that forms a conversation reserved for later, right now what he knows for sure is they are going to be so screwed if they submit their weapons for screening.

“So,” the security goes on, “unless you somehow got Lost Tech on you, you ain’t got nothing to hide.”

And that’s all fine and dandy, isn’t it?

Vash’s fingers curl around the handle of his revolver so tightly his whole body nearly trembles with it. Wolfwood, whose expression has been schooled into one of forced indifference, simply scoffs as he makes his way towards the screening area. “Thank you!” Vash says, saluting once before he catches up with Wolfwood.

“So what, high-tail our asses outta here or open fire?” the man mutters once Vash falls into step next to him.

“We’re not opening fire! Are you crazy?” Vash hisses, clamping his prosthetic hand around Wolfwood’s wrist.

“You got a plan, then, blondie? ‘Cause by the looks of it, we’re not exactly gonna sashay our way outta there in one piece!” the man hisses in return. “Bat our eyelashes through security? Maybe it’ll work with you, pretty, but I ain’t got enough charm on me.”

Vash’s protest dies on his tongue.

Charm.

“That’s it …” Vash whispers, earning a curious frown from the man. “I … I’ve been feeling this … energy. Since we arrived.”

Wolfwood blinks at him. “Energy.”

“Remember how you said the ley lines here are more exposed?”

“So … what, you feelin’ some hocus pocus?”

“Maybe? I don’t know, but—” Vash takes a deep breath. “Do you trust me?”

The man regards him for a moment. “S’it weird that I don’t have to think about it?”

Vash cracks a smile. “Then stay close to me,”

“Wouldn’t have it any other way, baby,”

“I’m sorry,” he blurts out.

In front of him, where Wolfwood has stopped to read the signboards, the man glances over his shoulder with a befuddled face. “For …?”

Vash clicks his tongue impatiently. This is way more awkward than what he has rehearsed in his head for hours on end. “I— back then, with the …” he gestures at Wolfwood’s weapons. “I said some … insensitive things that made you upset. For that, I’m sorry.”

The hunter blinks at him for a moment, perplexity melting away into clarity. “I ain’t mad at you, blondie,” he says eventually, soft tone forming a contradiction with the sullen expression he dons on.

“You— but— you just …” Vash gestures at him, deflating. “You seemed upset.”

Releasing a silent sigh, Wolfwood steps closer to him. “Well, I kinda was, but I got over it quickly, see?” he says, reaching out to adjust Vash’s hood so it wraps more securely around his head. “M’sorry I got cranky. I know you meant well, needles. Just— had a lot on my mind, but that’s no reason to take it out on anyone.”

Vash purses his lips, indulging in the warmth offered through their narrowing proximity. He doesn’t miss the way the back of Wolfwood’s fingers caresses his cheekbones before retracting his hands altogether. “I still shouldn’t have brought it up,” he says quietly. “All that stuff about being young and inexperienced …”

Wolfwood huffs out a small laugh. “Like I said, I ain’t mad at you – don’t think I can stay upset with you, to be honest with ya, sunshine,” he confesses. “S’no big deal.”

“Felt like it was,”

The man pinches his cheek. “Stubborn ass,” he snorts. “You’re good, Vash. I just— I don’t think I got it in me to … dunno … if I can’t stand ‘em, it’s ‘cause they’re already out to get me, y’know? S’an issue ‘tween me and them. You got nothin’ to do with this, ‘kay, needles?”
