[CANAAN/AQHAT] sketches of the princess Pughat, sister and avenger of Aqhat, known as "[She] who shoulders water, sweeps the dew from the barley, knows the course of the stars".
Her descriptions, in my opinion, seem to show her as someone strong from working the land, knowledgeable of agriculture, and proficient in divination of the stars which is likely how she found out her brother was murdered before anyone else (the text is broken there). The description of "[She] who shoulders water" reminded me a lot of Palestinian and Syrian women carrying water on their heads which was the inspiration for Pughat's pose :)

Finally finished. A tatreez piece I originally started to cheer up my great aunt Salma who was at the time in the hospital for issues with her pacemaker. She has since passed away, Allah Yerhamha. I continued on this to remember her and will always keep it with me as her memory.
Her favorite color was green, my favorite color is pink. I chose a tatreez pattern called "The Mother And Daughter-In-Law", where the doves are the aforementioned relatives, facing and looking away from each other. It can symbolize many things but in this instance I choose to see it as how, no matter what things come between you, you always reconcile at the "nest" or heart of the family, the golden thread at the center of the pattern. I tried to find a pattern from Nablus, which is where her family was from, but I couldn't find any that had foliage for the green. I ended up making a lot of modifications either due to accident or choice trying to work around the alterations, but that ended up making it my own.
It has my heart in it. I loved her dearly, and I know she still loves me. She would always talk about how I was the first baby she ever held. It's bittersweet to finish, but now I can visit her grave and finally show her, comforted by knowing that she is at peace with her loved ones in Jannah.

in the bronze age, whoever has the tallest hat wins
a couple of Anat wips... she is all I think about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first is a closeup of Anat in her full armor regalia, she'll be paired next to Pughat/Paghat, sister of Aqhat. second is Anat, bathing after fighting in the valley. Ugaritic Baa Cycle verse below.
"Shedding the blood of soldiery,
Pouring oil from a bowl.
The Virgin Anat washes her hands,
The Sister-In-Law of Nations, her fingers.
[...]
She gathers water and washes,
With dew of heaven,
Fat of earth,
Rain of the Rider of Clouds.
The dew of heaven is her oblation,
the rain of her ablution is the stars."

im not saying i /do/... but. if anyone were to be, hypothetically, interested in seeing scans of some books like The Violent Goddess by Kapelrud or Ugaritic Literature by Gordon..... i totally DONT know where to get it for you. not at all. no sirree. i love capitalism and exploitative academia and would NEVER make scans of publications for later research. how absurd

SYZYGY - celestial opposition, usually that of the sun and moon. My superhero/Marvel oc/self insert, a human magician working as a vigilante.
His powers/magic is based on using jinn magic, accessing spiritual power from objects and places to turn it into energy. This applies to kinetic energy but ends up being monodirectional. Currently making my way through some Marvel comics to decide what kind of direction to take him in but I'm pretty happy with this so far :)
Details below!
Decided to go the typical arab magician/sorcerer route and have him work with jinn and spirits, which is why he's covered in all sorts of protective symbols and talismans (Palestinian silver coin jewelry meant to reflect the evil eye and black magic, said evil eye on the back of his gauntlet and henna'd into the palm of his hand, his henna having symbols such as palm trees, olive leaves, pomegranates and the Horns of Hathor, and his mask which has the Horns of Hathor forming the brows).
His suit is a very simplified design of a thobe from Nazareth, of course in different materials, with pants under a thobe that is split up the front and the sides and tied twice around the waist with a red belt. The thobe is tied on one shoulder so as to not tangle in the silver armored arm, which conceals a lot of orthopedic braces (since my joints subluxate and hurt often). The 'tatreez' is incredibly simplified to give it a more iconic "superhero" look.
The two different magic colors are supposed to symbolize the physical and spiritual. The right arm is armored in silver, a pure metal meant to repel bad magic, the manifestation of the physical. The bare arm is adorned in symbols, but meant to represent the hand that reaches through the layers of reality. Not sure how real this is in Islamic cosmology, but when I was younger my mom explained how jinn were there but we couldn't see them through the metaphor of the seven heavens/celestial spheres, where different layers of reality lie on top of each other like so many folds of cloth. In this analogy the jinn would exist within another layers to ours, with God overseeing and existing within all layers. So Syzygy's powers hinge on both supplicating and asking spirits and jinn for assistance while also being able to temporarily access these different layers one at a time (severely limited, severely exhausting, but can be used to 'disappear').

ive just found two instances of this drawing posted on Pinterest, one of which was mirrored/flipped in what i can only assume was an attempt to throw off copyright algorithms. if you repost my art i dont just issue DMCA takedowns i issue strikes on the accounts that post them. im sorry if this sounds callous but im tired of having to deal with people ripping art that i took time and effort to make. dont confuse my openness with blind tolerance.

Cool thing I found out: Arvid S. Kapelrud published a prior work called Baal in the Ras Shamra Texts in 1952. Will be looking out for it!

Hi! I’ve been following you for a bit now (your art is beautiful, I love the way you color and how you draw faces) and I know that you’re an anthropology/archaeology student. Since I’m considering going into anthropology, do you think you could give me an idea of what it’s like? Is it similar to what sociology? Sorry if it’s a silly question and sorry for any mistakes! Thank you 🫂
Hi!!
I'm not super familiar with sociology as I've never really taken a course, but I can kind of sort of outline what I understand based on the various sub-studies and classes ive taken on them! I'll put it below a read more because this might get long
Preface: Depending on if you're going to Uni in the US or in Europe, or any place with education traditions based on them, the idea of anthro and archaeo varies. in the US tradition, Anthropology is the larger field encompassing Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, Bio-Anthropology, and Linguistic Anthropology. Could also be more subfields depending on who you talk to and who their professors were (you can kind of trace dissemination of ideas by someone's academic lineage). In the European tradition (as far as I know, I have very limited interaction, just one excavation season with the uni of Valencia) Archaeology is the big field where Anthropology is the subfield. Since I'm not sure where you're from I just wanted to kind of cover that first!
honestly my own experience with anthro was taking 100 level cultural anth classes and narrowing down what i liked based on what courses i took. bioanth isn't for me but its SUPER cool study on human evolution and stuff like fossil humans :) if you have the opportunity to take a bioanth lab, TAKE IT! lots of cool stuff with bone casts in my experience. Technically forensic anthropology could be included but i don't really have a high opinion of it since forensics is very. psuedoscientific. and doesnt really accomplish anything academic-wise that bioanth and other fields didnt already. a lot of people i know and have met in uni take a bunch of intro-to classes and feel out what they like from there. holistically, archaeo kind of gets fed into by every other field because it's just every subfield but in the past, yknow? sorry, this isnt super organized. i would HIGHLY recommend speaking to upperclassmen alongside your advisor with what classes are offered because i actually transferred out of my first uni because they didn't have enough anthropology classes, let alone archaeo classes, for me to graduate with a degree. depending on what school you go to admin might not see anthro as a priority, which is unfortunately a reality for a lot of STEM-focused schools.
on the connection to sociology, I haven't really taken any socio classes but from what I understand, socio and anthro really cover a lot of similar spaces in that they both seem to study and analyze humans, their societies, and their effect on their environments. a double major or a major-minor combination doesn't seem unrealistic or a stretch to me if that's the route you want to go! to summarize, if you can, i highly recommend taking as many subfield anthro classes as possible to see what really clicks with you! there are so many little niches in anthro, like trash anthropology. ive had multiple professors who have gone on 'digs' wth their own mentors to analyze human consumption of products and see the different levels within trash heaps or dumps to see the changes over time. you could ostensibly find a million different connections between anthro and socio if you put your mind to it lol.
sorry for this being all over the place! feel free to DM me if you'd like or send more asks and i'll do my best to cover any follow-up questions you might have :]
