Scott McCloud’s incomparable “Understanding Comics”.
I swear you can open this book to any page and it’s amazing.
(ps it’s actually a digital image of a printed copy of a drawing of a painting of a pipe)

'Irredeemable media' is such a funny concept to me because it's never used for stuff like Birth of a Nation or A Serbian Film. It's always The Owl House or My Hero Academia because these people only watch things for children and can't stand any conflict more complex than Super Mario Brothers.

I genuinely do not know how I used to sit in school and was expected to stay focused and productive for like 6? 7? Hours as a teenager. I know I was miserable for most of it for a variety of reasons, but I hadn’t considered that how exhausting it is to stay focused for that long while having to sit quietly, no snacking or stretching or checking my phone. At least in college there were gaps between classes, sometimes requiring to also walk between buildings which was nice!
Like ah yes we’re gonna put all of these teenagers who mostly have different mental health issues into overcrowded classrooms with over worked teachers and won’t let them go to the bathroom whenever they want and get mad when they don’t care and don’t wanna do their homework. Like I’ve been working on a paper for my singular grad school class and at one point I was like “dude why do I feel so rough rn” and I was like oh bc I’ve been doing this for like 4-5 hours

I don’t usually add to posts, but I recently have somehow tricked my brain into like a work around! Somehow I have now started to procrastinate in a circle, like “oh god I can’t even think about finishing this work thing while I have homework to do” which then leads to doing the homework where I’m like “oh god I can’t even think about finishing my homework while there’s laundry to be folded” and literally just go around and around until suddenly I’ve either made progress or finished whatever tasks were on my agenda
I’ll be honest, I have no idea how or when I started doing this, but I hope more people can find themselves in the procrastination loop of productivity
First you procrastinate on the task because it is not a big enough deal to get done urgently. Then you procrastinate on the task because it has become such a big deal that doing it is overwhelming. You would think that this implies a middle point where it is just big enough of a deal to get done easily, however the inherent perversity of the universe's causal geometry prevents this

Here, have a spark of hope.
The reality is that no single person can fix the entirety of the current ecological imbalance that has been literally centuries in the making at this point. Yet there are so, so many of us who care, and who are doing what we can to make a difference in whatever every day to day ways we're able. I often think of conservation efforts like the Loren Eiseley story "The Star Thrower" (aka, "the starfish story"). Amid a beach full of stranded starfish, one person cannot possibly save them all, but they can spend what time they have saving those they're able.
And this study shows that these efforts do, in fact, make a difference, not just for starfish but a myriad of species. This meta-analysis of almost 200 studies definitively proves that conservation preserves and restores biodiversity, keeping more species from going extinct. It's all too easy to get entangled in the losses, but we even more need to allow ourselves to celebrate the wins.
That success is crucial to convincing governmental entities and other stakeholders that putting funds toward conservation efforts makes a significant difference and is not only worth the investment, but worth increasing. And, on a personal level, it's necessary for those of us who care so deeply for this world to know when our efforts are having an impact, to buoy us up when the anxiety and grief over ecological destruction wears us down.
There is hope. Keep it up, folks; it's helping <3
