"We can keep this between us, though," she offered, as if it were a favor, "I'm certain we can find an agreement that works for us both."
Distantly, she realized Gallo still stood behind them, but he hadn't spoken, seemingly content to let the scene play out, even as Feronia silently requested his help.
When she realized the circumstances weren't about to resolve themselves, Feronia took a strangled breath, as if what she had to say went against every fiber of her being. "What do you want?"
"Only your silence." To anyone else, it would seem a small ask, but Nova knew how horrible it would be for someone as vindictive as Feronia. Once again, she fought down the urge to giggle. "If you don't mention this, I'm sure I can keep this whole incident to myself. I've been told I'm excellent at keeping secrets."
She flashed a predatory smirk of her own, and Feronia deflated. "I hardly believe in a witch's ability to keep a promise. But that will do, for now." Her voice was prim and proper, but her demeanor was drained of all the confidence she'd had moments ago. The unbridled thunder in Nova's eyes had even her, who'd been in the front row at more executions than could be counted on both hands, recoiling in fear.
"Wonderful. Glad we could come to an understanding," before Feronia could speak again, Nova stood and began to walk away, relishing the shock she left in her wake. As she walked, though, she realized she didn't know what would come next for her. A return to how she'd been living before? That couldn't be possible—she'd gotten Feronia to agree to silence, but surely she'd just get more creative with her tortures. After being embarrassed like that, she'd have no intention of letting it rest.

“You need to help me. We both spent our youth with the man, you know as well as I do what Niccolo would do to the both of us if he manages a return to court. He’ll need to show power, and we’re convenient pawns.”
If he didn’t know Nero, the servant might have been willing to feel sympathy.
“I don’t believe it’s an ‘us’ situation, Your Grace. Only one of us took something that belongs to him. You made it very obvious to everyone here that you got the emperor on his back before any divorce was discussed. You overplayed your hand, Nero, and you’re going to pay for it. The Serpent of Mutina stuck you with his venom, he beat you fair and square.”
Within a second, Nero held the man against the wall, hand around his throat.

series intro: an oath of deception
the archoracle is a venerated position. with a seat in the heart of Vinoseta, a near-impenetrable island, being selected to be the gods’ vessel makes you not only a religious leader, but a strategic political one as well.
kleio knows this, and is appropriately honored when the gods choose to speak to her. even though it means giving up all ties to the outside world, she’s willing and ready.
it isn’t until too late that she learns the college of priestesses that rule the land have their own agenda, and that the gods haven’t truly spoken to the oracle for centuries.
but then, whose predictions have truly been guiding public life for so long?

Politely asking for some of that new lore for WBW. Bonus point if it's related to the sea in any capacity but I'm not picky
OOOOOH OKAY I’VE GOT A GOOD ONE FOR YOU
I’ve added Scylla and Charybdis
So Vinoseta’s become a LOT more important in the new lore because it’s ruled by the Archoracle, whose predictions are seen as law by Circian priests. Access to the oracle is considered as good as talking directly to the gods, and whoever is selected to be the next oracle gets diety status.
(The actual truth of the oracle is…..let’s just call it a subject for another post)
Anyway, since Vinoseta’s already a small island, the only way to get to it is by water, and it’s notoriously impossible to get in OR out of, because the only waterways that take you to it are stuffed with monsters known to eat sailors; a whirlpool on one side, and a hydra on the other.
It’s a suicide mission to go OR to leave, and the few who survive are considered to be blessed by the gods.
In other ocean-related news, there’s now a magical barrier that makes crossing between the North and South near-impossible (no one knows the origin, Leonidas threw it up in his last moments)

WIP RE-INTRO: THE TRAITOR’S HEIR

GENRE: High Fantasy
AGE: New Adult
TROPES: Forbidden Magic, Betrayal, Curses, Love at First Sight, Disapproved-of Love
THEMES: Perception vs. Reality, family relationships, the passage of time, what we owe to our ancestors, the prince of power
STATUS: Drafting
PLOT: Circi has been split in two since the Bellum Civilae 25 years before, the South ruled by a tyrannical emperor, and the once-prosperous North split into warring factions. They share one thing in common, however: anyone caught using magic is sentenced to death.
A witch stuck at the Southern emperor’s court, Novellia gets a reprieve from this fate when she comes across a cunning, mysterious Northern noble in the heart of enemy territory. But this presents a new problem: how can she stop herself from falling in love with a woman who could kill her if she learned the truth? And what’s the explanation behind the reason Livia came South in the first place: a plague that’s overtaken the North, dead bodies rising from their graves, and those who recover from the disease coming back….strange.
CHARACTERS
novellia de rege: born with magic, and lived secluded in a forest villa for most of her life before her brother’s betrayal brought her to the emperor’s court. a girl who will fight the odds to the last second, and intends to enjoy as much of her life as she can even if it’s risky. some call it bravery, some call it reckless.
livia corvi: niece of the puppet-emperor of the North, and from a family of fervent magic-hunters. chosen by the senate for a suicide mission to the South to hunt down the cause of the recent plague. mercurial, ruthless, and would do anything to advance her standing.
adrasteia falco: Ephian who fled her country after her father and siblings were murdered by Southern troops. Loyal and first to draw her sword, her desire to avenge them is not only from filial duty, but to break the dark curse she’s been under ever since: turning to a dragon at every moonlight.
enrico accursio: the Northern emperor: Livia’s uncle by marriage and a notorious villain even to the Northern people, who blame him for the war. nearly powerless at his own court, which is under the control of rival factions of old aristocratic families.
giacomo gallo: the Southern emperor’s second in command, and boots on the ground, emblematic far and wide of the evils of magic. one of the few sorcerers who can live openly in Circi, but only by working for the king. as the highest ranking figure of Southern tyranny most people come across, he’s even more feared than the emperor.
SETTINGS:
Circi: empire founded by a refugee from the Calixian War, 1000 years before. For the preceding centuries, they were the hegemon of the continent, until they were broken and weakened from the war. Both sides have the same monarchical system: rulers aren’t born, they’re selected by the current emperor or empress and trained to rule.
Ephiae: small kingdom to the North: known for training selfless warriors who are regarded as the terror of the continent if you meet them in battle. ruled by two kings, one of whom takes the mantle of Shadow King: secluded from public life, and accepting a host of magical powers in return, the most notable of which is mastery over shadows. Their culture reveres sorcery, and they’ve been at war with South Circi for years before the start of the story.
Vinoseta: island under imperial control, ruled by the Archoracle and a small college of priestesses. mostly notable for their exports of luxury goods and the hardship in getting there: there’s no path that doesn’t lead to a shipwreck. Nevertheless, rulers continue attempting it as a way of controlling the oracle’s prophecy, an important part of Circian religion
Volcia: large, unexplored area north of the continent. no one centralized government, but the area closest to and most familiar to the world of the novel is ruled by the Dreamwitches, known for their mastery over the sleeping world. unlike the other nations, it’s often cold and rainy, even earning the moniker “where the sun never rises”
Aurealix: a continent across the sea from the known world, known for being populated by species such as Cyclopes, Hecatoncheries, Titans, Ogres, Harpies, and Satyrs. Often doesn’t get involved in the wars happening on the other side of the sea.

She ended up in the same place she'd been going during a lot of her time out of chains these days—the suite of the rex. Only when he wasn't around, of course. When she stepped in to the now-familiar sitting room, the person she was here for—Gallo's secretary—waved her in
Klytie Drago wasn't especially high-born, or especially intelligent, or notable. What she was, however, was ambitious, and that dedication had gotten her all the way into the imperial household. Her ruthless efficency was like watching a man fight a beast in the arena—horrifying, yet hard to resist. A phrase which could also describe Nova's repeated trips to see her.
She'd promised herself, months ago, that what she'd done in a moment of especially piercing grief and pain would never happen again. But that had been when she'd still clung to hope that pain wouldn't be her eternal state. When her only interactions were those who saw her as a prisoner to be used and broken, these meetings were the highlight of her existence.
She thought it similar to a dark sky being lit only by a crack of lightning—an ill omen, but at least it was something to feel.
As the handler of Gallo's affairs, Klytie was well aware of her magic, but her status wasn't high enough to afford her knowledge of how Nova ended up here, and it wasn't information Nova planned to share. Trusting her with anything seemed absolutely ludicrous.
She pulled a strand of her always-perfect rose-gold hair behind her ear—a compulsive habit Nova had picked up on over the weeks—before reaching one hand out to Nova and leading her to her small room, just off of the office.
"I've missed you," Klytie's smile was genuine enough to reach her eyes, yet Nova didn't trust it, even as she let herself be kissed, warm and searing. She knew that the hands cradling her face were the same ones that would sign the death warrant of others like her, and still, she lost herself in it.
Every time she imagined the reaction of her father, her sister, she felt a hot wave of shame. She wished she could explain why she did this, because it certainly wasn't love.
Desperation to feel chosen? Self punishment? An attempt to make herself unforgivable?
At the end of the day, though, everything seemed to come back to her anger and spite. Lying there, a witch entwined with an imperial lady, her heart sped up with victory. Even as their hostage, beaten, broken, and barely allowed freedom, she'd captivated one of their own. One of the most ambitious women at court risked the promising career she'd all but secured to have her, and it was thrilling.
Was this what Orianna had felt, when her answer to their brother's betrayal had been marriage to a Southern senator's daughter, using her magic in service of her new wife's family?
Nova evil ex appears!
