Hey guys, I think I REALLY like Deltarune
I think I’ve drawn Kris, Berdly and Queen at some point, but I’ve NEVER drawn anyone else till now. Pretty exciting!!! The brain rot is real.

thinking abt. the idea that ralsei is meant to be something of Kris’ “ideal self” combined with his whole “darkners only exist for the sake of lightners/im not supposed to have my own desires” schtick. combined even with the entire Kris/player relationship and themes of autonomy.
A big big point of deltarune is that Kris is their own person. They have their own personality, relationships, likes and desires, and they are explicitly NOT meant to be a player insert unlike most other rpg protagonists. Ralsei being representative of kris’ ideal self kind of means that he would be someone that Kris could latch onto like that, he is someone who is supposed to exist for Kris to see themself in, and while Kris’ struggles come from the fact that they are fighting to try to be their own person again, ralsei’s come from the fact that he doesn’t think he’s supposed to be his own person. Ralsei starting to realize he has his own interests and desires and freaking out about it because he’s meant to just be someone who exists for Kris’ own sake and for them to see themself in while Kris is constantly fighting against the player because they are clinging onto their own interests and desires and adamantly breaking away from the idea that they are just someone for the player to see themself in. idk I dunno if this makes any sense but i was thinking abt it and I thought it was interesting

My personal theory with the dialogue choices is that they *are* given by Kris themself, but not willingly- think of it almost like an impulse. They hear Ralsei traumadump to them about being confused as to what they are and what their purpose is, and they want nothing more except to comfort him! …But the impulse is there. The choice to just throw all that away and tell him that he’s right, that he doesn’t matter anyways. Theres nothing that can make that impulse go away, but its alright! They’ll just make sure to not listen to those impulses and choose to do the right thing!… The issue is that’s no longer Kris’ decision to make, though. However, even if they’re at the mercy of whatever one of their choices their puppet strings pick- no matter how deeply they try to bury these choices- they aren’t going to let us get our way with everything without a fight, which is especially prevalent in chapter 4.
Maybe I’m missing something here that tosses this theory out the window, but regardless I think having Kris express themselves through the interpretation of the choices we make for them is a really cool narrative detail that gives us a *teeny tiny* window into who Kris used to be before we came along.
I'm not sure where I stand on various Narrator Theories in Undertale and Deltarune, but Deltarune Chapter 4 did add in a very interesting detail. The SOUL versus Kris sequence in Chapter 4 confirms that the SOUL has no narration on it's own.
The narration stops when Kris tears us out, and the only text we get when we play the SOUL disembodied is dialogue from other characters. Despite being capable of sight and sound, the SOUL cannot 'examine' items and despite being able to move and interact with objects, it does not get it's actions narrated to it.
Whatever is up with the Narration, it is tied to Kris' physical body, not to us.
This is already a great narrative device because it enhances the creepy atmosphere of this sequence by completely robbing us of the familiar source of information and amusement, making everything feel empty and Wrong, but I do also have to wonder about the Implications of it.

Shout-out to the 0.5 seconds where Ralsei makes direct eye contact with you as if to ask "are you possessing Susie too??"

Hey guys remember how Ralsei was talking about his acceptance with outliving his own purpose and being thrown away and forgotten once he stopped being useful and how Kris and Susie should just forget about him if he ever outlives his purpose as a Darkner too?
…I’m starting to think that theres a reason the Roaring Knight fight works the way it does, and why he goes down so easily there.
Its so easy to just flit between dialogue options and choose the one that would be the kindest or have the best outcome, its too easy to just *say* that you care about Ralsei, so I half feel like maybe the TRK fight is the game trying to prove a point-
“You really care about Ralsei as much as you say you do? Alright, prove it. Reach out your hand to lift him up just as you would with Susie, even despite how little he can do against this opponent. Prove to me that you really don’t think of him as a burden and don’t need to find him useful in order to care about him. Go on, pick him up. Pick. Him. Up.”
…Orrrr I could just be looking a bit too deep into this, but Toby Fox has never been afraid of hiding deeper narrative meaning even just below the surface like this, no?

#deltarune spoilers#deltarune chapter 3#the roaring knight#ralsei#deltarune ralsei#it would be really really cool if this interpretation of the fight was intended#i LOVE when games don’t just tell their narrative to the player through dialogue and tooltips#but actually SHOW their narrative through the gameplay#making the right choice not as easy as just thinking about what dialogue option to choose#but to actually lift up your friend and help him to keep going even when he doesnt#provide any ‘use’ for that battle#God I love Deltarune
