i simply need everyone to understand that i am tired all of the time. literally at all moments. if i ever go somewhere and do something, it is not because i am somehow full of energy, but instead that i have carefully stored up all of my little bits of energy like a dragon collecting jewels, and am now vaporizing them all at once

percy jackson take that is sparked by tiktoks i've seen and fics i've read and my own personal experience with my name:

annabeth does not seem like the type of person to have a nickname EXCEPT for very specific criteria. if that criteria is met, i certainly do not think her nickname would be annie or beth or anna. i think it would be something that seems entirely random, like etta, or some less thought of denomination, like betty.

allow me to explain my reasoning:

i have a name that is very easily shortened in one specific way. i hate this shortening of my name, and also just really like my name, and therefore do not go by any nicknames, unless it is my family because they have a nickname for me that is only marginally related to my actual name. i think annabeth would be the same.

picture this: she's on the run with luke and thalia, she's like 7 or 8, and she HATES being called annie, but they need to cover up her name somehow because annabeth is a really uncommon name. i feel like, in order to make her still feel comfortable, luke and thalia would start throwing out names that are even just tangentially related to either part of her first name. she likes the nicknames that take from the 'beth' part of annabeth, so luke and thalia start figuring out nicknames that could either a) be derived from beth or b) have some similar sounds so that they all still know who they're talking about. and, knowing annabeth, she's probably going to pick the most unique-sounding name because she actually really likes her name and doesn't like when people shorten it but she also likes that luke and thalia are trying to give her a nickname and it makes her feel special so she wants that nickname to reflect that. that's why i think, personally, that she'd go with etta as a nickname, because it's easy to say and spell and it would feel and seem really special to her.

and so etta or betty or whatever her Super Special Luke And Thalia Nickname is becomes something that only luke and thalia call her. no one else is allowed to call her that. the first time grover tries to do it while they're travelling, she yells at him that he's not allowed to because it's her family nickname. but then thalia gets turned into a tree and luke is a head counsellor, and annabeth starts hanging out with the other athena kids and also with grover, and so her little family expands. she lives at the camp full-time, which means it's hard for the other campers to miss how she lights up when luke calls her etta. she starts to tell the people she hangs out with a lot and really trusts (like grover, and maybe mr d) and considers family (like chiron and the athena cabin) that they can call her etta, and it's a massive deal because it means she feels like she's at home in the camp.

and then percy comes along and after like 4 years of knowing each other and nearly dying every year, he asks why some people call her etta. she explains it, and he listens, and he says that he thinks it's really cool and kinda cute. he asks if he's allowed to continue calling her wise girl. she says that he's the only one allowed to call him that and that she'd kinda miss it if he stopped. percy just grins and she says that he can call her etta if he wants to but he just cracks a joke about how she'd miss being his wise girl too much.

anyway i have a lot of feelings about names and nicknames as someone who has a slightly uncommon name who people like to shorten in a way i hate. i've always felt weird when people call annabeth 'annie' in tiktoks or fics (not in a 'i hate this' way, more in a 'this feels slightly off and it's not for me' kinda way) and it's because, to me, annabeth does not seem like a nickname kind of person. especially not a nickname like 'annie'.

but idk that's just my opinion, i don't tend to see characters as nicknamable at all tbh, probably because of my own particulars with nicknames haha.
