Evaluation
My final piece is a film. It started with the theme, Surrealism, where I explored many different surrealist techniques. A homework I had was to look at narrative through surrealism artist. I chose to look at Ralph Eugene Meatyard who I found very inspirational. His Lucy Belle Crater images were my favourite and I got a lot of ideas from his. As a response I made a circular mask and covered it in gaffa tape so it looked like the moon, so gave him the name Moonface.
I experimented with other masks
I created an idea for how I wanted him to look and a friend modeled his, wearing a full suit, top hat and the mask. I took photos in black and white around a house and garden, I played around with how he might act and ended up with a series of photos which I thought were very interesting and worked really well. I went back to look at Meatyard and thought more about the content of the images. His images all look like they might be in a photo album. I had a look at my own photo albums and I photocopied and photographed them. The photocopies came out in black and white which was why I photographed them. I used my photocopies to add in moonface because I’d decided on how I wanted him to be. I decided he was going to have a lot of problems with family an that he felt abandoned and alone and like he didn’t know who he was or where he belonged.
Another idea I had which I used the photos of the albums for, was to manipulate my photos and
· Took photocopies of old photo albums because of Meatyard- lucybelle
· Cuts up photocopies and drew over them covering faces
· Used scalpel and cut into them,
· Reprinted moonface photoset and stick moonface – part of the family
· scanned photographs into the computer and print them A3
· cut up same place as before
· stick into new book with material- like a childrens book
· take scans onto usb and put into iphonto
· put into stop motion- not works well-times
· try in imovie- makes stills move towards the photos
· used stop motion- export to imovie
· started to crop
· not working again- timing issue
· used laptop- made movie using windows live movie maker/editor\
· photographed original photos and used them in movie too
· recorded people talking- parents, sister, moonface
· used garage band to make a sound track and on windows movie editor you can only have one sound track
· had to export garage band to itunes- after editing
· emailed to myself
· opened on laptop
· put into movie editor
· put at the beginning
· add in credits
· save as a computer file
· added onto tumblr
· wanted piece to support
· printed manipulated images A3
· hung on hangers like a child might
really like it- went well, would edit sound- make moonface louder as hes narrating his own story, his identity probems. Would project and have moonface infront of it

Video
this is my film which I posted to my other blog
tumblr
This is my final piece. Its about my character, Moonface who is a shy, inconfident, sweet man who feels very very alone and finds it hard to know or find his identity. This is a video showing what his mind might be like after looking in the photo albums of his past and not finding himself there.

Face Distortion
Joseph Heideckers is a photographer who looks at face distortion and he was part of the inspirations and research that came from my photo album manipulation. I love his work but I think that a lot of it is textural, it looks like he might use beads and thread.

John Stezaker is an artist who I've researched before and liked his work. He uses faces and manipulates them. He add in landscapes and also extra eyes. I think that he's very inspirational although I don't plan to make work like his.

Carole Bremaud is an artist who i only discovered recently. She uses art techniques to distort faces. Her work looks like she has smudged paint over faces. I really like how it looks and am considering using a similar technique to hers.

Komido Yoshima is an artist who's work I've seen before but I'm not sure where. She adds fashion items like shoes or clothes onto peoples heads. Her pieces are very simple but I think work really well.

Lou Beach is another Face Manipulation artist but this time her work is much more surreal, it really reminds me of Exquisite corpse with animal heads on different bodies.

Joe Webb is a really interesting artist who takes away from photographs. None of her images have any every person in it. They all have a missing people. I really like the work also the possible ideas and concepts behind the work.

There are several more artists who I think are all very inspirational and all give me possible ideas for my work manipulating photo albums that I plan to do.

Tim walker, Kyle johnsons and Kylie Woon were the main inspiration for the photoshoot I am planning.
Tim walker is a fashion photographer, who
They have all inspired me partly for the look of beauty and use of nature in their photographs. Also all of their work is quite surreal......

Photo Albums
As part of my final piece I've been developing part of my idea to use my old photo albums. I had my mum photocopy some of the photo albums so that I had copies of them on larger paper also so I had better quality because before I had just taken photos of them using my phone and the flash was being funny so some of them are kind of blurred.
I'd always planned to manipulate them and I started to do that today, I decided that it would be better to have them cut up and as separate photographs because I was just experimenting and with the photo album background they looked kind of shabby, I experimented with using keys and a scalpel to scratch into them also I used pens to draw over them, I started with more scribbling over the images but I became more engrossed and really started to enjoy it so it developed into little unique drawings over the images, giving me and my sister as children masks or blood. I also tried experimenting with targeting parts, like crossing out the face or eyes, using arrows and circles. I watch revenge and in the first series the main character targeted her characters and started by circling in red then once she'd succeeded she drew a cross through the circle so I experimented with that too.
It was supposed to be just an experimental process to decided what or how I wanted to manipulate my photographs after more research but I actually really love how some of these manipulations turned out and think that I'll include these ones rather than create more.

o.O

I often draw out concepts before I take them. I think it makes it easier to visualize the composition of the photo. I put together a few of the sketches I did before each photograph, so you can see how the final product compares to the original sketch. Just thought it might be interesting haha :)

Today
Today in my photography lesson I feel that I made a lot of progress with some of the work I need to do to finish off ideas or concepts. I also managed to really inspire myself to finish some of these piece off at home and ways to develop or link in my ideas.
I manipulated some of my photocopies of my photo albums by covering up the faces, blocking them out or drawing over them. I also began to edit some of the film clips from creating the video of my third mask character I'm really please with the start of this clip and hope its headed in a good direction.

Proposal for photography
For my final piece I would like to create a film.
The film will be about my first character with the circular mask. I plan to give him a name, personality, brief description and background information. I want him to have a lonely and, because of his history have a negative attitude towards families.
I want to use my family album photographs, printed onto photographic paper and then I want to manipulate them by scratching into them. I plan to use collage and photo montage to stick this character over the top of these photo albums. I want him to look purposely out of place. I will need to produce another photoshoot of this character using the photographs I have as a guide, I'm considering using a film camera as well as a digital camera and develop both sets, the digital images will be a backup in case the film camera developing doesn’t work too well, but I will need to think about and then test whether the images will be in black and white or colour. If they’re in colour I will have to send them off to get them developed. I will also need to photocopy or scan the photo albums again.
Once manipulated I plan to re-photograph, scan or photocopy the manipulated images and crop them on the computer to get them to the size I want because I w
ant to have them in a slide show. In my film I want to have the images flickering between the original and manipulated photographs. I plan to record the people in the photos talking about what they remember or feel about being in the image: where it was; what they were doing; was there a big lead up to the photograph; was it posed? I want to have all of these recordings played over the top of each other along with a recording I have of an analogue film projector noise because I want my film to come across as being old. I want to project these slideshow images and recordings onto a wall and have the character in front of the images so they’re over the top of his face and I want him to be talking about his thoughts and experiences and memories too. This will result in there being a lot of talking over talking I want this effect because I want it to be slightly creep and I want the viewer to feel confused because they can only pick up on certain words because there is so much going on. I want it to feel disconcerting. I want to film this and present it as my final piece.

I plan to go to the somerset house to have a look at Tim Walkers work. I hear that its very fairy tale like and linked to surrealism through photography. Also that its similar to some of the work that I've researched in my photography book and work that gave me ideas that I wanted to develop into my own piece. I hope that by going to see Tim Walkers work I will get some new inspiration and ideas for this piece that i want to create.
