He smiled wide, lowering his arms to offer Lillie a hug.

“You need only bring your smile….I’d like that!”

He giggled.

With a bright smile, Lillie tried to return the hug, though it was likely only a brief touch on his arms for Guzzlord, given how big their size differences were. For once, she was no longer scared of an Ultra Beast; instead, she enjoyed his presence. 

“Really? Then, I will make sure to visit you with a big smile...!” Petting his arms gently, Lillie looked into Guzzlord’s eyes. “Still, I want to see you happy too... Living in a cave with all those fearful companions... It must be lonely.”

He thought for a moment.  He did kinda forget that the pokemon he lived with were a rather dangerous sort.  However, he also knew they were scared of him.

“You have nothing to worry about, my friend.  I will make sure you get safe passage.  You have my word.”

The girl was relieved to hear Guzzlord’s promise. After all, a visit to his home was a nice gesture of friendship, and the knowledge that she did not have to worry about any wild Pokemon jumping at her was reassuring. She did wonder how Guzzlord managed to give her a promise, but then she was reminded of Guzzlord being an Ultra Beast, a creature out of this world who was prone to instilling fear. 

She was no longer afraid of him, though. 

“Thank you...! It is a relief to know that I can come to you safely... And perhaps I can see if there is anything that I can bring to you after a visit to your home, too...”

“You can usually find me within what they call ‘Resolution Cave’….I have made my home deep within.  You are always welcome.”

He smiled warmly.  He really enjoyed this girl’s company.  She was so gentle and kind…he loved that.

Resolution Cave... Lillie was quite certain that some strong Pokemon lived there. While Guzzlord likely had no problem with this, Lillie was not in the same predicament  — Lillie didn’t have any Pokemon with her that would allow her to travel freely in the cave.  She no longer had Nebby with her, opting to set her companion free to pursue the beauty of the world, unrestricted from Lillie’s limited travelling path. 

“Thank you, I really appreciate it... Still, um, I... I don’t think I can go there unaided...” She tried to smile back, but a small frown persisted. 

After all, she would love to visit; knowing that she could not without troubling someone was a shame.

Pokemon is good because everybody who plays is given the exact same storyline and choices, but every person has a completely unique experience.

There are currently over 750 trillion different team combinations, even each individual pokemon has only a 1 in 50 billion chance of being identical to another of the same species. And that’s not even including pokemon having different moves… That means that every Pokemon is a valuable once in a lifetime companion, and your adventure with your pokemon is and will always be completely unique to you, and that’s really special.

The young girl beamed. “Then that’s what I will do... I am happy that I can be of any help to you! Can I always find you here, or do you reside at another place?” 

If Guzzlord had yet to have a home, Lillie was willing to help her new friend out. She was not the best with finding habitats, but perhaps she could seek help from the Aether Foundation, now under her brother’s management.

She puckered her lips, a pout forming as she did so. “N-No! It is not right if I don’t do anything in return...” Her brows furrowed in thought, and then an idea appeared in her head. 

“Oh, I know! Maybe I can give you Poke Beans regularly, if you want... I don’t know if I can make enough, but at the very least, you will not have to worry about food that much...”

He lets out a sad sigh.

“If she tries to hurt you, you can come to me for safety…okay?”

The Ultra Beast’s offer was nothing short of surprising. The two of them had just met, and despite all evidence shown in this encounter that not all Ultra Beasts were dangerous, it was still hard to believe that Guzzlord was willing to take a risk just for her. 

"T-Thank you...!” Lillie was very grateful, but she was certainly sad that she could not return the favour in the same way. The young girl was no Trainer, and she had already left Nebby with her friend. “I cannot thank you enough... I am not a Trainer, but um... If there’s anything that I can be useful with, please remember that I would like to offer you my help...” 

A shy smile appeared on her face; though worry was also apparent, as the girl was still thinking of a better way to offer her assistance to Guzzlord.

He was silent as he listened to Lillie speak.  He did not like Lusamine.  Not one bit.  But…the little girl seemed to still love her.

“……I hope she changes for the better for you.”

Letting out a soft sigh, Lillie had a reserved smile on her face. The feelings she held towards Lusamine was complicated, but she certainly did not want her to get hurt. Disowned daughter might she be, she still considered Lusamine to be family. 

“I hope so too... I am going to try my best... but I really don’t know if I can do it. She had done a lot of bad things without remorse... I just hope it is not too late."

Lusamine gave a bitter, halting laugh. “And whose fault was it that I was so gravely injured, my dear Lillie?”

That… infernal thing she called Nebby had been the one to attack, striking Lusamine with a burst of energy so intense and so bright that it rent her, quite literally, in two– but Lillie herself had given the order.

Lillie had tried to kill her– and, when that didn’t work, dragged her forcibly out of paradise– and yet now sat here playing nurse, tending to her with kind words and gentle hands.

It made Lusamine sick.

Even so, she could not gather the strength needed to bat those hands away. And, if she focused, she could dimly remember the moment that proceeded that attack– a single tentacle lifted menacingly in the air, the poison barbs on its end curling into claws meant for her beautiful daughter’s throat–

Her stomach turned. She closed her eyes and breathed out sharply.

She only vaguely registered the doctor’s presence as he approached and began to flit around her bed, checking monitors that she hadn’t noticed were there and taking a moment to examine the IV trailing out of her arm.

He spoke to her only briefly– standard explanations and well-wishes– and opted to excuse himself when she refused to give any reply save for a blank stare. There were still a few tests that would have to be run before they could properly assess her condition, he concisely told Lillie, and it would take some time for Madam Lusamine to return to her normal activities.

What those were, he shivered to think about, but Lillie was young and such a sweet girl; she certainly deserved the standard words of encouragement, at the very least.

Lusamine listened to all of this in a haze; the words quickly began to run together and stopped making sense. So she laid still, eyes half-lidded, and only spoke once the closing of a door signaled the doctor’s departure from the room.

“You should have just left me be.”

Silence hang heavily in the room. 

Lillie kept her mouth shut and head lowered, quietly thinking of a way to calm Lusamine down, only pausing when the doctor was talking to her about the results of his inspection and she responded in return. Upon the sound of the door closing, she raised her head to look at Lusamine as she gave her reply. It was clear that she was being cautious; her voice was strained, and she seemed to have selected her word of choice carefully. 

“I... I didn’t mean to hurt you, Mother. I just wanted you to stop... Stop before anyone got hurt, you included...” Taking a deep breath, she continued nervously. “Nebby didn’t mean to do that to you... I know Nebby wouldn’t. Nebby was just not used to the power they newly gained from evolution. Nebby wasn’t a strong fighter before; just in possession of some mysterious power. The sudden surge of power takes a while to adjust, and... and I could only call upon Nebby for help at that time...” She wrung her hands anxiously; she wasn’t sure whether Lusamine would believe her, but that was truly what she believed in. 

The image of Lusamine lying on the cold ground, unconscious and barely breathing still burnt in her mind. At that moment, her mother, her aggressive, frightening mother, falling on the ground, completely still — It terrified her. She could still feel her heart beating rapidly, as if it would jump out of her chest at any moment. She was always aware that her mother was a force that needed to be stopped; but only then she realised that she did not want it to end in this way. To end with her mother’s eternal slumber. 

Deep in her heart, she still longed for her mother to come back. She still longed for her mother’s love. And more importantly, she still cared about and loved her mother, despite everything. 

Pulling herself back from her thoughts, she shook her head slightly before speaking again. “I couldn’t do that... It’s not right to leave you there...” 

“I couldn’t bring myself to do that... You are my mother.” She stared into Lusamine’s eyes as she added, hoping that Lusamine could see that she was indeed, earnest.

Turning back to see the one who answered her, she was met with an elfin face. She was certain that she had never with an encounter with her — it was a face so ethereal, so divine that anyone who saw it would never forget. Yet, she could feel a sense of familiarity as she cast her glance on the other girl. 

Her words however, revealed exactly who she was. She had only stuffed the one and only Nebby in her bag, after all. 

“You are… Nebby?!” Lillie did not hide her excitement at seeing the deity. Advancing quickly towards the goddess, she made her move to envelop her into a hug. She wasn’t all that used to the human-like form she was seeing now, but Nebby was and would always be her most trusted companion.  

And with that, the question mentioned by Soleil gained a deeper meaning than before. The humour was noted, but Lillie saw through the thinly masked emotions easily. Giving her a bright smile, Lillie beamed and nodded. “Of course you are, Nebby! Surely, we have encountered a lot of friends during our journey, but you were the one I started the journey with! Without you, I would not even be who I am now… I am really, really glad that I got to meet you… It’s the one fateful encounter in my life that I won’t ever forget!”

Once she registered Soleil’s last words however, Lillie decided the return the attempt of humour to the goddess. Opening the zipper of her bag, she grinned at Soleil mischievously. 

“Nebby, it’s dangerous for you to stay outside! Get into the bag, now —” And with that, she made an attempt to grab Soleil’s arms, giggling while she was at it.

    “So you’re saying we’re best friends?” there’s some kind of attempt at humor in her tone, but the wavers of happiness and hope are unable to be masked. Lillie was the world to Soleil, to be considered a friend alone meant the world to the Goddess. She smiled warmly at the other, followed by a soft laugh, they had protected each other from a lot since they had become partners in crime, hadn’t they?

    Lillie had saved the tiny God from being drained of energy and life, while Cosmog had done its best to return the gesture by keeping Lillie alive and safe– even if it could only do so much at the time. However, now, with a full form and endless amounts of strength, Soleil could do a much better job at protecting her friend, even if it was in a different way than before.

    “but you better not try to protect me by shoving me back in that bag, Lillie, I swear-”

“Well….I hope she doesn’t cause you to regret that decision!  That would be terrible…”

“She wasn’t happy to see me, but...” With a faraway look in her eyes, she continued softly but firmly. “I don’t regret it. She is my mother, and I know I would regret it if I didn’t come for her.” 

It was a distant memory, but she still remembered. Her mother wasn’t always the lunatic who pursued the Ultra Beasts recklessly. The image of her loving, doting mother still lingered in her mind, and she just could not bring herself to give up on her. 

As dim as that hope was, it still shone in her heart.

A smile appeared on Lillie’s face as the small girl registered her father’s call. For the young child, it was always a joyous event to see her father around, as the man often found himself occupied by his research. Picking up her pace and running to Mohn, Lillie threw her arms around him to give him a hug.

“I am fine, Father…! What about you? … How is your work coming along?” Surely, the girl was doing nicely, but she was quite bored, having already explored the entirety of Aether Paradise with her brother; or at least, places where it would be safe for the two of them to go into. 

Emerald eyes met her father’s warm eyes as the girl decided to speak up about her request. “Um, is it okay if we go and have a fun day together? You, mother, Gladion and me … Oh, and maybe Miss Wicke too…?”

Two weeks?

Two weeks.

Staring up at the ceiling with an unreadable expression, Lusamine turned that answer over in her mind– or, at least, tried to. She hardly reacted to the feeling of cool water across her forehead, nor the touch of her daughter’s hand.

“Rest?” she echoed in a croak. “I would think… two weeks to be more than enough time to rest… Wouldn’t you?”

That said, she couldn’t get up even if she tried. It was as if she’d forgotten how– and, despite her words, she wasn’t quite sure she wanted to. It sounded less and less appealing the more she thought about it.

Her response to Lillie’s question was to shut her eyes and turn her head away with a quiet, noncommittal, “Mm.” It seemed she didn’t care either way.

She didn’t expect Lusamine’s awakening would be all sunshine and rainbows; while the bitterness her mother held was in her expectation, it didn’t mean that she wasn’t intimidating her. Especially when Lillie’s mind kept reminding her that she wasn’t someone that Lusamine cared a lot about or held in any positive regard.

Still, it was up to her to take care of the former president of the Aether Foundation now. Using one hand to gently wipe Lusamine’s face and the other to softly press her down to bed, she whispered back to her mother. “Maybe... But you are gravely hurt back there, and two weeks aren’t nearly enough for someone who have suffered a serious injury like you...” 

Turning to the door, she called for the doctor to come in. Lusamine might not care about getting her condition examined, but her daughter certainly did. With a gentle push of the door, the doctor Lillie had sent for in advance came in, worry clearly etched on his face. The anxiety that shone in his eyes did not escape Lillie’s eyes, but the young girl understood. He was a responsible doctor who was concerned about his would-be patient’s health, but nobody could blame him for being fearful of someone who called for the destruction of Alola. 

“I am grateful for your willingness to help... Please do as you see fit.” After greeting the doctor, Lillie smiled gently, hoping to ease his weariness. “I will be staying here as well,” she added, hoping that it would work as the doctor took several steps to stand next to Lusamine’s bed.
