Got the first three siblings colored!!! These are the largest of their litter, Perry, Oatka, and Allis! I’m finally getting some sexual dimorphism figured out for greater hellbenders. Males will typically have brighter and more vibrant colors than females. TYPICALLY. Perry is exceptionally brightly colored for any hellbender, however, so he’s an outlier. Occasionally you get a dull male or a bright female, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary— trans hellbenders have it pretty easy out of all the main species. Nobody knows what you are unless you tell them. Males’ bright colors are associated with attracting a mate and females’ to aid in avoiding predators and not draw attention to nests, but in the modern era coloration has since lost its purpose now that the rivers are safer and with hellbenders learning that personality counts more than looks :)
