i always wanted to make something that would connect old bg games with bg3 through a returning character, latest theme of our zine “Mirrors and Memories” was perfect for it

incidentally my bhaalspawn and tav are some of the saddest characters i’ve ever made but they are trying so. hard. okay.

Sorry if it’s a weird question, but how does Aqil reconcile his chaotic-ness with his devotion/dedication to his clan, god, and role?

Not weird at all! Chaotic neutral is an alignment usually associated with very specific archetypes and it did cross my mind that Aqil must seem a little unusual in that context, considering that faithfulness and dedication are some of his main traits.

The big part of the explanation is the kind of god he follows. 

Nethys fascinates me because he a) lands in neutral by combining both good and evil aspects b) rarely communicates with his faithful and that fact is celebrated c) even his holy text is described as full of contradictions putting the task of finding the answers on the person who studies it rather just granting them.

Aqil is chaotic neutral in a very philosophical sense. He believes in the need for balance of different elements but also in cycles and never-ending changes. And he applies these principles to individuals as well as entire societies. He will butt heads with very lawful types not because trying to establish any kind of order is bad but because holding onto it too tightly is unhealthy and ultimately futile because change will come no matter how hard you try to stop it.

Role of Meru ties into that idea of balance and cycles. First Meru was granted power by Nethys which introduced arcane magic into their very bloodline so now each new Meru is a repayment of that initial investment. Give and take. Blessing and a burden.

Idk if it’s a silly metaphor but if you picture destiny as a river you could try to argue that struggling against its stream is the chaotic option because you detest being led anywhere against your will, but perhaps letting it carry you where you need to go can also be seen as chaotic attitude, complete freedom is an illusion anyway and you may find wisdom in the flow of things.

8 What were they told to stop/start doing most often as a child?

Oh man, kiddo Aqil was so intense i think people had to keep telling him some variant of ‘chill out’. You know how Aang's reaction to being avatar was to want to run away from the responsibility? Aqil did the opposite and decided he had to become perfect to be worthy of his title. Which is honestly just as bad. So to keep him normal his sisters would rope him into children shenanigans, his mother would encourage him to embrace interests that may seem frivolous and his dad would remind him that making mistakes is not the end of the world.

21 Why do they get up in the morning? 

To live and learn! He is equally guided by his desire to prove himself, be as skilled/wise/accomplished as he possibly can and his genuine love for the world, his curiosity and desire to experience it all.

38 What memory do they revisit the most often? 

He is such a sappy person despite still being young. If fantasy world had family photo albums he would happily tell you about each and every picture. But I think his most fond memories are family dinners, there is just something about sharing food with the people you love.

1 What’s the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do?

Depends if there is something interesting happening around him. He likes watching people like they are reality tv, for example Wendu and Lann acting like they are in the middle of the worst divorce is prime time entertainment. He doesn’t need to be personally active/involved to get enjoyment out of it.

But if we are talking about a scenario where he is supposed to just wait… then not very long. This boy does not have some deep internal life, nor plans he needs to consider or worry about, he is all about things actually happening.

If someone is waiting alongside him he would proceed to bother them, if he is alone and leaving/finding something to do is not an option then he would just take a nap to fast-forward the time.

22 How does jealousy manifest itself in them (they become possessive, they become aloof, etc)? 

He is not jealous or possessive and generally is not bothered by anything you could do with other people. You would actually need to have exclusivity talk with him because in his mind relationships are open with no stipulations by default. (Why would you ever limit the fun you can have?) What does make him jealous/angry/frustrated is if you deny him your attention, especially in the moments when he craves it. And to that he can react in two extremely mature ways: ‘well, fuck you. i will have the time of my life without you’ and acts spiteful when you try to reach out to him, or ‘i WILL make you pay attention to me one way or another’ and pulls some stunts that can range from annoying to destructive.

27 What causes them to feel dread?

It’s such a funny question for a fear eating monster. He is closely acquainted with dread but it’s other people’s rather than his own. 

He is mostly unkillable and if something posed an actual threat to him (full aeon KC for example) he always has his teleportation magic to just remove himself from the situation.

I was developing story idea of a nightmare that digs into character’s deepest fear and in Knave’s case it was being stuck in Areelu’s hut, unable to leave, when he barges the door and tries to escape he just ends up in the same place again and it feels like maybe he was never real to begin with, just a ghost of some dead kid, nothing more. So from that i would call his fears: loss of freedom, insignificance and unreality.

Pre full trickster Knave has considerably less power but the same set of fears is expressed in his whole ‘i’m trapped in the narrative against my will’.
