Currently Watching: Little Witch Academia. A friend got really into it and has insisted on rewatching it with me. He needs me to know that I’m the girl with glasses. Every time her fandom stuff came up while he was watching he messaged me to say “she’s behaving like you. she’s just like you.” I haven’t actually seen those episodes yet, so I can’t help but feel fear...

Currently Reading: In theory, The Ten Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn. In practice I read volume 9 of The Case Study of Vanitas last week and volume 1 of The Knight Blooms Behind Castle Walls the week before and then nothing else of book-y nature. I... think I may have lost one of those by sleeping with it in my bed. Sacrificed to the plushie pile.

Currently Obsessed With: The same things as usual, really. Which is to say last week I played amounts of Kingmaker I fear measuring. I really love the focus late game Kingmaker has on narrative and the struggle to control a story as it unfolds because it encourages you to think about the roles and archetypes a character inhabits and how willingly they exist in them. Whether or not they truly want to be, the baron/ess is the “hero” of the story by the end because That Is What Nyrissa Was and you are either intentionally usurping her role or being forced to inhabit it. And “hero” is simultaneously a role Balthazar hates playing because it feels thrust upon him (and worse. “martyr”) and intentionally crafts for himself because there’s so much advantage to preying on that expectation, and on top of that he needs to be important and asserts himself that he is the main character of the story. It makes for kind of fun tension. There’s also something blurry about this feeling of “when does action make something no longer an act.” He’s the savior of the land, he’s built this kingdom of light where the common people live with dignity and joy... Even if it all comes from selfish motives, somehow he is a heroic figure in a legitimate way. And when people retell the story the private cruelties and the harsh retaliation and the underhanded intentions will all be washed away. The great deeds will be all that remain. It’s both the perfect victory for a cold-hearted deceiver and the greatest feat of self-annihilation possible. Maybe it’s the fact that I should really have slept four hours ago and this is all stream of consciousness but god. It scratches my brain. I know there is a question on my Kingmaker companion quiz about themes that would have been interesting to put more focus on and this. This is really the one for me. Narrative and storytelling. Role playing and who gets to assign the roles and retell the story. That’s where it’s at. Every moment of contested reputation and every uncertain first impression and every moment where you’re forced in parallel to another narratively important character. That’s it. That’s what it’s all about man. I loooooooove this game.

A Piña Colada Slushie reminds you of a night out with friends. You might have drank too much and regretted doing so, but it was in an effort to enjoy your youth. The morning after, you may have sweet memories of a good night, or you could get the sour end of your drunken pursuits: a massive headache and a date with your toilet.

"Hey, are you doing alright?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. It's nothing." Kim Lip shakes her head before taking a sip of her drink. "It's sweet of you to worry about me, though."

"You sure? If someone is creeping you out, I can say something to the bartender." You glance around the bar as she laughs. "What's so funny?"

"You're cute, that's all." She says with a teasing tone, and you smirk in response.

"You're not half-bad yourself." You joke as she nearly shoves you off of the barstool.

"Yah!"

"Sorry, babe. You want me to make it up to you?" Your eyes flicker to her lips as she gives you a smack on the shoulder.

"You're too much sometimes, I swear."

"You love it, Kim Lip." You say before turning back to your drink.

"I do, sadly." She shakes her head, and you gasp in offense. "Don't be like that, Y/N. You know I love you… even if I don't say it that often."

"I know, but it'd be nice to hear you say it." You jokingly say before Kim Lip gently takes your hand in hers.

"I love you. Is that enough for you, or would you like me to say it again?"

"I-" You pause as you try to recover from her cuteness. "My head's spinning, but I'm not sure if it's from the alcohol or your touch."

"You're embarrassing to be around."

With that, she pulls her hand away and you sigh as she crosses her arms.

"Do you want to know what I was thinking about?"

You pause as you think about her question, and you take a sip of your drink before nodding.

"Please enlighten me, my dear."

"I was thinking about the future, and what I wanted it to be like." She shyly admits as you lean into her.

"Oh? Did that vision involve me?" You tease as she places her hand on yours.

"In your dreams."

"Well, I guess we're done dating, then." You shrug before she intertwines her fingers with yours.

"You're not getting rid of me that easily, babe. You didn't let me finish what I was saying, either."

"Go on, then. What does this future of yours look like?" You take a swig of your drink as she answers you.

"One day, I'd like to settle down with you and buy a place of our own. I'm okay with whatever future you may want, as long as I get to live in peace with you."

"Ah… that's a very good plan." You say while trying to not spit out your drink. "I'd like that too, you know."

You reach out, and your hand gently caresses her cheek. She shyly looks away for a moment before looking back into your eyes.

"How about a toast to the future?" You suggest before taking your hand off of her face.

She deflates at the loss of your touch before grabbing her drink.

"A future with you is worth toasting to."

You grab your glass, and the satisfying clinking sound it makes when her glass connects with yours strikes a nerve deep inside of you.

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

This.was.so.fudging.good. WHAT THE HECK???? How am I supposed to move on with my life after this😭 But seriously, this book was absolutely amazing. I stumbled across this book after finishing Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros(still not over that one either tbh), which left me with the biggest book hangover of my life bro. I was looking for anything even remotely similar, dragons, magic, whatever. And let me tell you, A Promise of Fire delivered baby!! The story is so well written and the characters and world building are all solid as a 🪨. Even the side characters were amazing, and that’s a rare feeling for me! Cat is the kingmaker, which is basically this all powerful being with the ability to make or break anyone who sits on the throne. Power like that comes with a cost, and Cat has spent the majority of her life paying the price for it. That is until she joins a traveling circus(I promise it’s not as out of place as it sounds). There she runs into Griffin, the INSANELY hot, caring, and ruthless alpha sinta who has just dethroned the current royals and put his sister in charge instead. There’s nothing, and I mean nothing y’all, I wouldn’t do for Griffin. A kill and ask questions later man, who’s also the biggest softie in the realm? SIGN ME UP COACH. It should also be noted that the spice and angst in this book gave Fourth Wing and ACOTAR a run for its fudging money🥵 This was the slow burn of my dreamsss😩 Honestly, my only complaint about this book was that TRASH ENDING. Like, no really. What was that???? I genuinely thought I skipped a chapter and went straight to the end. But nope, just the world’s worst cliffy and a somewhat happy ending. I have so many questions still!!! I swear I could go on for days🙄 ANYWAYS.

YEAR END FIC REVIEW 2019

ao3 tells me that’s 95k wc if we discount random teasers/snippets i only wrote on tumblr & twitter than we’re well over 100k. 

Overall thoughts

I honestly thought I wrote less this year giving how many actual new stories I have up on ao3, but over 100k is still a pretty admirable job so far so I can’t be all that disappointed in myself. I don’t have an actual estimate wc on everything bc I post random snippets/teasers on twitter and than move the more edit and polish version on tumblr AND THAN i move it to my dumpstire fire collection if it fit. so like, i don’t know exactly how much wc i did but still moderately impressive given how profoundly lazy i can be lol /o\. 

there were a lot of things i wanted to do but i didn’t get around to it bc i held myself back from committing to various big projects due to my promise/obligation to updating social media au :S. which i guess is good bc i didn’t add on to MORE WIPs but also depressing bc im stuck in a rut bc of it. i hope to explore more projects next year!

My best story of the year

“we’re young gods” prob my psuedo mad max post-apocalyptic wasteland abo au... GOD WHAT A MOUTHFUL. outside!pov has always been one of my fav narrative piece to write esp when im building a evolving world that come with it. i love a post-apocalyptic landscape, the fight and survive theme has always been a deep fascination for me plus w/ abo which makes it even more interesting. i talk a lot about the idea of kingmaker and the person behind the seat of power/throne a lot and i wanted that deeply in a lot of my ‘verses bc stories of movers and shakers of the world are always fun bc their actions have such HUGE RAMIFICATION and i always like politics and wars a little too much lol /o\. 

My favorite story of the year

“to catch the golden snitch” bc i really like my veela!katsuki fic the most. prob bc it plays into adapting some familiar concept/theme/source (HPverse) and putting my fav spin on them with bkdk. i have always been fond of creaturefics in hp fandom so i knew i wanted to make another VEELAFIC bc why the fuck not. it also play into my fav trope of katsuki being something inhuman, dangerous, and beautiful and also SO COMPLETELY WHIPPED FOR THS HUMAN BOY ;D. 

Most fun story to write

“to the moon and back” aka DRUNK!IZUKU FIC!!!! bc HELLO DRUNK IZUKU IS THE ABSOLUTELY BEST.

Story with the single sexiest moment

“all these delicate things’ or aka the panties fic bc unf i really like see man indulge in feminine things esp when they’re someone who had such a history of violence like izuku who had suffer so much hurt in his life; AND ON HIS BODY which are riddled with scars and i think should allow yourself to be kind/softer to yourself and things like panties are so DELICATE that idk i really dig that juxtaposition??? A LOT. 

Most "holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story

“rip out those wings darling” aka mutual yandere fic i was originally given a prompt by someone but my giftee dropped out so I RAN WILD AND CAME UP WITH THIS BULLSHIT. idk i always like fucked up relationship esp when it’s mutually assured destruction kind of fucked up where they both equally crazy about each other and im all for that. fandom has a habit of making izuku being super creepy stalker but they make him violent rapist and that doesn’t sit well with me. you can make izuku creepy and stalkerish w/o playing into that kind of things :S. i hate how darkfics these days are like fall under that purview when you can have darkfic w/o necessitating sexual violence... like pls explore mindgames and emotional/mental manipulation more like man i think that’s much more interesting so i tried that with this fic. izuku doesn’t hurt others or hurt katsuki BUT HURT HIMSELF to manipulate katsuki to care for him and im like SO ABOUT THAT bc it play into his self sacrificing nature w/o me bending his characterization to make him into something recognizable and katsuki violent obsession and possession with izuku is ramped up but it isn’t sexualized but about ownership and wanting to izuku enough to to kill and idk i dig their mutual destructive habits about each other lol. 

Story that shifted my own perception of the characters

i swear to god i don’t like the villain!deku trope. im more indiff to it than anything but the trope tend to twist him into something unrecognizable to me but when i was coming up about this ‘verse i wanted izuku to be a bit jaded and betrayed by the world/society but still SO EARNEST AND HOPEFUL about it even though his goals has twisted in a way that by saving it he has to break it first. somehow trying to true to himself as he slip further and further in darkness and i just find that kind of duality fascinating????? like how do i keep in character but make him fall and see his struggles b/t both sides and i find myself liking villain!deku just a tiny, A TINY more and open so much potential. 

Hardest story to write

“as the moon bears witness” bc i did a rushed job on it and I HATE IT W/ THE FIRE OF TEN THOUSANDS SUNS. there’s so much i wanted to include but i fucked up and i hate how much I FUCKED UP ON IT. this is def the fic i regretted the most bc i knew what i wanted but i couldn’t exactly execute it correctly but instead of trying to think of a way to fix it i just let it go and i hate it and myself ever since than. UGH. 

Biggest disappointment

"AS THE MOON BEARS WITNESS” for the exact same reason as above. i want to rewrite this so SO BAD and i will. 

Biggest surprise

i didn’t have any surprise fics tbh. everything that i wrote is pretty much under my purview LOL but i found myself being more active on twitter the last half of the year and writing more threads (i.e. live writing) than moving it on tumblr. a lot of pieces i written on twitter was sudden for me and took me hostage but ya know what i go with the flow anyway bc what can i say im just a weak, weak girl w/ zero self control. 

Most unintentionally telling story

maybe “no peac, no quiet in your eyes”? I think that idea slapped me across the face bc i spent a week getting really obsessed with asoiaf fics on ao3 and man I LOVE POLITICS AND WARS?? did i mention that??? i love dynastic rules, warring kingdoms, and a love earth shattering enough to move mountains and i wanted to see that so much so that ‘verse kind of happened. 

Story I haven't written yet, but intend to

omfg SO MANY JUST SOOO SOOO MANY. i would really to get around to writing a full fledged fic of either surrogate au or sperm donor au bc i love that kind of unconventional family and romcom are like YA KNOW MY WEAKNESS. 

Goals for this year:

UGH. 💀💔🗑 MY HEART. THIS IS THE THING ISN’T IT?! It was a book about Mia learning about herself and her limits and her goals and how sometimes plans have to change as we grow and mature and blah blah blah.

SO ON ONE HAND, IM LIKE YES! YOU GET DOWN WITH YOUR BAD SELF.

BUT ON THE OTHER…

I STILL CANT TRUST ASHLINN!

And Kristoff kept bringing it up. The trust thing. And I kept thinking like…. I don’t want her to burn Mia. If she does I swear to god I’ll rip her to shreds. Because saving Mercurio for Mia doesn’t make her trustworthy. That’s just an insurance plan. I MEAN SHE EVEN TOLD US THAT SHE WAS ONE OF THE BAD ONES. that Mia was not like her and the other killers.

BUT. A FEW THOUGHTS:

1. When they had sex, Kristoff described it as electrical and as if it were meant to be.

2. HE KEPT DESCRIBING HER EYES AS “SUNSBURNED BLUE” AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW ONE OF THOSE SUNS IS BLUE. So maybe they’re meant to be in the sense of the sun and the moon?

3. THAT STORY ABOUT HER FATHER AND HIS LOVER WAS JUST TOOOOO SIMILAR TO MIA AND ASH TO ME. IDK. I need to reread but it came off to be as a MAYBE parallel. The question would be: Who is the Kingmaker and who is the wannabe king? Cuz Ashlinn is the one I wanna saw would be the stand in for Mia’s dad and Mia the stand in for his lover. BUT IDK.

4. TRIC was talked about as a kind of stepping stone for Mia. He was her first love and he ALWAYS WANTED TO PROTECT HER. Not in an overbearing kind of way. But he was there when Mister Kindly ran off, he was there with the scourging and the desert and he opened up to her and all that. BUT They ALSO shared things much deeper and more emotional than Ash and Mia—and that’s where Mia and Ash comes off a bit forced or as just sex to me. The background isn’t here because Mia doesn’t trust Ash enough to open up to her and when Ash opens up (which isn’t much of at all) both the reader and Mia is like “there is a good chance this bitch is lying or trying to manipulate me.”
