Hour 39

‘For fuck’s sake.’, mutters Jake, as the apartment plunges into darkness for the fourth time within the hour.

It started happening just when you were finally getting ready to settle down for the night. After being together, both of you had collapsed in place on the floor. The shadow panic from your past was trying to pull you under again, so you held onto Jake. It was more desperate clutching than holding, and you were aware of that, but you couldn’t stop yourself, because what if he pushes me away now, he didn’t even want me, just games, he’s angry with me anyway, he hates me, he’ll shake me off and walk away disgusted right now, please no- but Jake didn’t do any of that. He just hugged you close, catching his breath, slowly relaxing into your arms.

There wasn’t much talking. You cleaned yourselves up a while later. In addition to all the other things, it was already past any sort of reasonable bedtime (for you anyway, you’re sure Jake is the late-nights-late-mornings kinda dude), so you should’ve been exhausted. And you were, but you still felt wound up and restless.

The Sandman series showed us many times that Dream is actually incredibly empathetic and curious toward humanity, which betrays his cold, stern countenance. This scene is my favourite example:

With her...vibrant vocabulary and attitude, Lou at first seems like a passing joke character, a Victorian stereotype. But Dream neither dismisses her nor seems annoyed by her. He's observing her intently.

Then Hob comes and sends her away. If you look closely, you can see Dream following Lou's reactions when she gets the coin.

Even though this is their long-awaited reunion after 100 years, her nickname is the first thing the audience hears Dream talking about. Dream looks sad and concerned.

And all of this was before he went through all the significant incidents that changed his outlook toward the worlds around him.

Jake was the one to shower first. After taking yours and stepping out, you find him asleep on the bed. You can’t blame him- last night wasn’t your best sleep, but it sure was hell of a lot longer and better than what he had.

You stretch. In the last thirty hours or so you’ve sat around so much more than you normally would, and much of it in less-than-ideal positions. Your body feels stiff. You think for a second, then you get your headphones from your backpack. You hook them up with your phone’s bluetooth, switch on an upbeat playlist from your music library, then walk around Jake’s apartment listening to it. This is common practice for you. You don’t ask for much in terms of entertainment- you don’t have the time or the money. Losing yourself in music is enough for you.

You roll your eyes, then notice his empty hands, ‘How far did you make it?’

‘Not much.’, Jake says, taking off his coat and gloves, ‘It’s not just snow. Debris, stuck vehicles, emergency workers setting up boundaries. You really couldn’t have left today.’

‘What do you do for fun when you’re alone?’, you ask. He’s got no TV, not even a laptop that you can see. You appreciate that, actually. Fewer screens, the better.

‘Snort stuff.’, is his simple reply.

‘Don’t much like to be alone with your sober thoughts, do you?’, you blurt out.

‘Don’t fucking psychoanalyze me.’

‘Scared?’, you jut up your chin, and he glares at you. ‘Sorry’, you hold up a hand, checking yourself. You enjoy bantering with him a little too much. But just because it’s new and thrilling for you, you don’t get to cross boundaries. ‘You’ll snort something now?’, you ask. Truth be told, you are struggling to wrap your head around someone being so casual about serious drugs.

His lips curl in annoyance, ‘I’m running really low on that too. Was supposed to get some tonight after work. This fucking storm.’ He sits down on the bed and bristles for a while. You notice him throwing quick glances at you a couple times while you check your phone, then write a text to your sister- it’s short, you just say that you’re safe- and you have a feeling he’s considering what to do with you… doing you. Maybe it makes sense to him in a why-not way- kill time, have some fun. After all, this is the perfect setup for a one-night stand.

‘Would that be so bad?’, a voice inside your head whispers. ‘When did you last do something reckless? Something just for you? You want him, don’t you?’

But it’s not that simple-

‘Let’s hear your fun ideas.’, his voice startles you out of your thoughts, ‘seeing how mine is a no-go at this moment.’
