"I don't?" Jace purses his full lips into a moue of frustration. He definitely didn't understand. There was no disguising that. Jace didn't pretend to be particularly good at solving riddles, finding them tedious. But for Helaena he could humor them for a short while. Death walked among them, that was true. It lurked in the shadows, hiding behind smiles or concealed beneath cloaks. They were safe in the Red Keep where guards were stationed at every door, but death dwelled beneath their very feet. It was easy for Jace to forget that prisoners accused of treason or worse were held within the dungeons below. When he was king he would have to decide the fates of those that committed crimes against the crown, which made his stomach churn. Jace didn't particularly like the thought of that. "Another riddle? You haven't given me enough time to properly mull over the first one." Jace points out with a furrow of his brow, following Helaena's gaze to the nursery. "Dreamfyre has given birth to a lot of hatchling, has she not?" He recalls when he was a child and when he had bravely delved into the Dragonpit. Jace had found Vermax among a clutch of eggs laid by Dreamfyre. He had been so small then that he was barely bigger than a hatchling. Jace bristles at the thought, at the smell of sulfur, and Dragonfyre looming over him like the majestic beast that she was. What else could Helaena mean? He thinks of dragonlings and pictures his four younger siblings, and how they had all grown up on Dragonstone. Perhaps they were the key to solving this riddle?
continuation from here for @jacaeryse
she had hoped jacaerys would understand. her nephew had always far more patient with her and indulgent of her riddles when they were younger, made an effort to figure them out; even when helaena never could. a frown caused by frustration formed on her lips. "you don't understand." she said with the slightest shake of her head. "the stranger is not amongst the gods that will come." there was a certainty to her words of which she rarely ever had when speaking of her dreams. "they're among us. those who would see it otherwise." it was on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't name who. the names wouldn't come— as if her tongue had been removed whenever she tried. though one thing she could say, that she knew he would understand with certainty. "hatchlings dies most easily— especially on dragonstone. but elsewhere they're sought out just as easy." her eyes unconsciously fell to the direction she had been walking towards. the door to the nursery nearby.

❛ Death comes for us all. ❜
agatha all along starters [ x ] open / accepting
ㅤㅤㅤJace wasn't particularly fond of riddles. Hours would pass before he finally came to a conclusion, flustered and frustrated that it had taken him so long. Helaena offered him no riddle this time. Death comes for us all was rather direct. Jace mulls over the statement, curious as to why Helaena would mutter such a phrase. "There are a lot of uncertainties in life, but death isn't one of them." Jace offers a small grin, "I hope to avoid the stranger for as long as I can. I've got a bright future ahead of me and I can't become a proper king if I die."

Jace missed being home. He longed for his mother and father while away and still felt as if he just left the nest. It was difficult at first. Jace was so used to being in a house full of hustle and bustle. Luke was his constant companion and no matter if they argued, they would always make up. He was Jace's shadow and he especially missed Luke during his first week at college. It wasn't until he bumped into Cregan ( literally ) that he finally felt at ease. Rhaenyra and Harwin would have wanted him to unfurl his wings and fly. Jace had done just that. He was popular, athletic, and had a gaggle of close friends. It was difficult struggling his social life, his family life, and his grades all at once, but he managed. He was a Targaryen and inherited his mother's sheer ambition. Cregan never dressed up. He was a stick in the mud in the worst of times and it was even rarer to see him smile. Jace was certain that the man had never smiled before him. So far Luke had gotten along well with Cregan and the two had a healthy repertoire. After some shopping Luke settled on a pirate costume, complete with a parrot and a hook hand. Jace decided on a greek outfit that came with a golden laurel and a toga. For Aemma he picked out a lady bug outfit with antennas and little wings. With all of their outfits selected they stopped for burgers on their way home. It was nice to catch up with Luke who had stayed busy in Jace's absence. He had even mentioned flirting with a girl or two. Jace wished he could help in that regard, but he was as gay as the day was long.
Arriving back at the house they were greeted by Vermax who was immediately scooped up and into Jace's arms. "I'm gonna bring you back with me." He tells the Daschund who was now being swaddled like a baby. Vermax settled in Jace's arms happily, snuggling up against his owner. Downstairs he waited with Cregan, having gotten dressed in his costume in the process. When Aemma finally returns downstairs with Rhaenyra he almost squeals. She looked so adorable in the costume he had picked out for her. "Oh my gosh! You look so cute Aemmy!"
Rhaenyra chuckles and shakes her head slightly when Jace declares that he'll go in costume. "Pick something fun, then", she tells him and grins, taking Aemma back into her own arms. The little girl seems disappointed and contemplates crying for a moment, but then gets distracted again. Rhaenyra can tell by the way she keeps rubbing her face that she is overly tired and definitely needs to sleep for an hour or two, before they go out and trick or treat with the others.
Lukes comes rushing back in, jacket and boots in hand, which he quickly puts on. It is strange for him to be alone at home now, after spending his whole life with Jace right here with him. He has a lot of friends and is never bored, but Rhaenyra can tell that he misses his brother. "Enjoy dinner, you three. Luke, pick something appropriate for a costume that will not scare your sister out of her mind. Jace, she's in 9-10 months clothes, pick her a costume, okay?" Rhaenyra searched in her bag and pulled out a few twenty dollar notes, which she handed to Jace so that he could pay for dinner and their costumes.
"I'd say be back by five. That way you can go change and we'll get ready in time for it to be dark and all", she suggested, noticing that Aemma had already fallen asleep on her arm. She carefully transferred her into Harwin's arms, so that he could go upstairs and put her to bed, while she saw the boys off. "Behave", Nyra told Luke and kissed his cheek, before she did the same with Jace. "Drive carefully, have fun, don't eat too much sugar already before trick or treating."

“I watch you, just as closely as you watch others.” Dane
ㅤㅤㅤ"'Tis your duty to watch over me, is it not?" The Lord of the Seven Kingdoms asks his trusted knight as they stroll through the gardens side by side. Dane had remained at his side throughout the war and the ensuing conflict afterward. Ascending to the throne had been difficult, even after the dust had settled Jace had little time to spare. Being able to take a walk with one of his most trusted companions was a luxury he could rarely afford. "What I cannot fathom is why you've remained at my side for all this time." Jace stops in front of an extravagant fountain, decorated with a statue of his mother. Her expression is serene as she looks out over the gardens which are in full bloom. Statues of Joffrey and Luke flank her, serving as memorials to the family he had lost during the dance. "You deserve better than this, Dane." Jace turns to face his knight, reaching up to place a hand on an armored bicep. "But I wouldn't have it any other way."

ㅤㅤㅤWhile Baela might have hated jewelry and dresses, Jace loved seeing her in them. They contrasted greatly with her fiery personality and the combination of them both made his heart race. One day she would wear the finest dresses and sit next to him atop the iron throne. Thoughts like that guided Jace through these uncertain times. There would come a day where he took flight on Vermax to aid his mother in the war. For now she had coddled him, shielding him from the violence of war. He understood her concern. If he was lost the heir to the throne and the prince of dragonstone would be lost. Jace couldn't imagine putting his mother through that, but he wouldn't be treated like a child.
ㅤㅤㅤJace meets Baela's gaze and softens. She always knew what to say. "Is that a promise?" He smiles at his betrothed, leaning in to place a kiss to her lips. "Though I would imagine being a pirate would be much more exciting than being a prince." Jace chuckles at the thought. A life of exploring the sea and hunting for treasure might have been preferable to being king one day to anybody else. "If you were a pirate would you spare my life or throw me into the ocean?" He asks, mischief playing in his big brown eyes while a smile dances upon his own lips.
"It was just the clasp that was so sharp who knew fashion could be so deadly." Baela says before looking at the bracelet. She really didn't like the thing it was too... girly. She hated jewelry and dresses really any fuss her father just did not know that. She laughs and looks over at Jace. "In truth I only wore it once to make him happy it will disappear soon like most of his well meaning but impractical gifts do." She really did not understand her father and he didn't understand her. She felt so strange being around him once a daddy's girl she now felt like he was a total stranger but years apart would do that.
She looks over at him and her face softens as she forgets all about her father and the damn bracelet. A part of her wonders if this was insecurity about his claim. He thought himself a bastard and sometimes those insecurities came out in small instances like this. She gives his hands a squeeze and smiles, "It would not matter if we were royals or pirates or beggars on the street. I see no world where I do not find you and fall madly in love the marriage being arranged simply made my life easier."

ㅤㅤㅤ"Can you blame me? I missed you." Jace admits as a rough thumb brushes along his jawline. The prince was surprised by his own sincerity. He glances away from Cregan's stormy gray eyes for the very first time that night, willing the pink in his cheeks to diminish. He knew how eager he appeared in the eyes of Cregan, who had already taken several lovers and had even produced an heir of his own. His youthfulness betrayed his inexperience and willingness to do anything Cregan asked of him. It was with great regret that he had to step away so his lover could undress. Jace didn't have time to pout as his eyes were suddenly very focused on Cregan's bare flesh.
ㅤㅤㅤHe watches Cregan carefully out of the corner of his eye while he gathers his clothes. Jace does his best to look as though he isn't staring which was proving to be difficult. Cregan was perfect. Even while mottled with scars, he was everything Jace had ever wanted in a man. Without realizing it he wanted to feel protected, to feel another man towering over him. To feel dainty and delicate in calloused hands that had seen far too many battles. Jace finally joins Cregan, sitting on the edge of the tub. ㅤㅤㅤJace admires his lover shamelessly. His eyes travel down his neck, past his collar bones, and over the swell of his pecs. Brown eyes traverse further down a powerful stomach before he's forced out of his reverie. Jace blinks, forcing himself to focus on Cregan. His request takes a moment to register to the prince who had been so focused moments before. "Join you?" Jace clears his throat, moving to stand. Without much hesitation, he obeys. His own body is slender in comparison to the wall of muscle that waited for him in the tub. Shyly he steps into the tub, sinking into the water atop of Cregan.
ㅤㅤㅤ"This is nice." Jace whispers as he settles against the man, tucking his head beneath his bearded chin. He was conscious of a heaviness lifting and of a strange calm taking its place. Jace shuts his eyes and allows the warm water to wash over the both of them. "What made you travel south? I didn't expect to see you so soon." Jace asks, his voice soft and pleasant. He would begin washing Cregan in a moment but he was far too comfortable just existing on top of him to bother.
Cregan couldn't help but chuckle, a deep, rumbling sound that made Jace's teasing feel more playful than it had any right to be. He had always prided himself on that ability—to keep calm and collected, even in the face of battle or, apparently, when Jace Velaryon looked at him as if he were the only thing that mattered.
Jace’s hands on his bare skin sent warmth rushing through him, as potent as any fire in the North, and Cregan found himself leaning into the touch despite the jest about his smell. He knew he likely reeked of sweat and travel, but Jace's eyes seemed to find something admirable in him all the same, and that made him feel bolder.
“I don’t intend to drive you mad, but if I do, perhaps it’s your own doing,” Cregan retorted, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. His voice was low, gravelly, though a hint of humor softened his words. He took a moment to brush a rough thumb along Jace’s jawline, feeling the clean, youthful smoothness of his skin, so different from his own.
The sight of Jace folding his cape and moving with such reverence to prepare the bath touched something deep in Cregan's chest. The Velaryon prince treated him as if he were precious, and that was a strange feeling for a man who had spent most of his life in a world where strength and stoicism defined a leader.
But here, in these chambers, there were no battles to fight. Just the two of them,as he stepped toward the bath, the steam rising to greet his exposed skin. He waded into the water, sighing as the heat enveloped him, easing the tension in his muscles.
His gaze never left Jace, though, and he couldn’t help but add, “Or perhaps… join me. I’d like to see how well you handle this challenge.” His grin widened, daring and full of affection, just as he leaned back into the bath, savoring the sensation of warmth and the closeness of the man he loved.

ㅤㅤㅤjace had no patience for any of the dragonseeds. those who had failed to claim dragons of their owns were free to return to obscurity and continue with their lives. this girl who had lingered, who was pretending to be something she obviously wasn't, had ruined whatever goodwill he had left. wherever had she gotten this dress and her delusions of grandeur? jace would have to inform his mother that one of the dragonseeds had pilfered her closet and stole one of her gowns. no matter how frustrated he was at the moment with rhaenyra he wouldn't allow any disrespect to befall her. Jacaerys watches the girl carefully, rage bubbling beneath his stoic expression. His lip sparks over his teeth, " I am Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, Heir to the Iron Throne, and Prince of Dragonstone. You will not disrespe--" His face sours when the strange girl proclaims herself to be his mother. "You're absolutely mad. My mother is in her chambers tending to matters of the realm."
ㅤㅤㅤinstantly he assumed the worst. this girl was yet another assassin sent by the greens to murder rhaenyra. jace maintains his poise, unwavering in the face of such a potentially dangerous threat. he was about to call for the guards when realization struck him like a lightning bolt. jace had seen her face plenty of times in portraits in the red keep. it was like his own and just looking at rhaenyra now he could make out their resemblances. did he have another aunt he wasn't aware of? that could be the only explanation for this. "explain your resemblance to the queen." jace demands, still wary of the girl. You look just like your mother. he had heard that plenty growing up and still did on occasion. If only he had inherited her violet eyes and silver hair. then there would be no whispers about his parentage and his uncles wouldn't have been so cruel.
the air was different, sharper, as if all that was once peaceful upon the isle stronghold had been shorn from it — as if the time that had passed with the ease of careful languidity had been drawn to a needlepoint focus, balancing on a razor's edge. it felt thicker, somehow, too. rife with tension. men and women all bearing the sheen of targaryen silver gold hair passed in droves, scarcely acknowledging her as she had passed them and made her way to the castle proper ( beyond a pitying sideways glance on the faces of some, on others - outright derision. as if mocking her for not turning and walking along with them away - back to the docks and the villages below ) the gravel beneath her feet was the same, the gargoyles that stood sentry over the courtyard in which she stood now were the same as they had been the very morn before—she reached out a hand to rest upon one of them, spreading her fingers upon the hard, cold stone. the same. upon the surface all that was the material was the same. and yet her own people had not acknowledged her. ice blossomed anew in her gut. she had come to dragonstone to get her bearings, to see what might need be taken in hand once it had come under her control in it's entirety with the passing of her sixteenth name day, and yet she could not find it's castellan with whom she had intended to speak. ser alfred had been set away to harrenhal, the knight had said.
and the queen was indisposed. she would need speak to the prince.
she had nodded, then. dully. mind reeling with the possibilities. unwilling to let the chance to learn just what this was slip through her fingers for the sake of her own pride — for surely it had to be something. she did not think that alicent hightower would have, or even should have been there. nor did there exist any other prince to which she might have a conversation beyond her uncle, and unless daemon had returned, and she did not believe he had - aegon was a toddler, helaena was a squalling babe, aemond; a mere newborn. then who was this ? a young boy clad in the black and red of house targaryen, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. he looked to be about her own age, on the cusp or barely past his own majority, claiming to be the prince of dragonstone. there was something definitively familiar about his features, something to the shape of his nose and the set of his eyes that hearkened back to a name she could not quite place. her head cocked, slightly, surveying the chamber itself - the same, and yet different. her gaze returned to the boy at the loud snap of his book. he moved with an abrupt sharpness that spoke of more then mere anger. he was looking at her with contempt, she realized. he was the prince of dragonstone ? aegon and aemond had been borne with silver hair like her own, and they were mere children. prince jacaerys velaryon, the knight had said before he had returned to his post just outside the chamber door.
yet the velaryons were valyrian as well, bearing too the silver white hair and oft purple eyes that bespoke that lineage. his mother would have had to have had his coloring, and yet if he bore any true claim to the title of prince of dragonstone, his mother would have had to have been a targaryen — would have had to have been her, simply for no other princess had been bestowed the title, and yet that did answer why, or how, or even when she was, for him to be as old as he was — the shape of his nose and the set of his eyes… were hers - though it was impossible, plainly impossible. and could’ve well spoken only to his valyrian blood and not any they might share so directly. the girl drew herself in obtrusively as he approached her, her lips pinching and her nose wrinkling, nostrils glaring as she marched his glare with one of her own.

" seeking dragons ? “ she repeated harshly, “ whyever would anyone be seeking a dragon of house targaryen ? “ the idea that anyone would was unthinkable to the girl, for if no other reason the attempt would be dangerous, even for one of dragon‘s blood. even for one who had trained to manage and move around them, none could control them completely. it was a partnership that one had needed to learned to maintain. had it been dragonseeds, she had seen ? had that been what that was ? did he believe she was one of them ? she shook her head, sharply. her chin lifting as she said icily, “ you cannot order me, you cannot send me away — I do not know what this is, or who you truly are. but i am princess rhaenyra targaryen, the princess of dragonstone, this is my castle. i am the authority on this isle, not you. “
