omg this is too cute
adore you
pairing: jack hughes x fem!reader
warnings: profanity
summary: jack has it down bad for you and you can’t seem to see that
a/n: sorry it’s taken me so long to publish this & for the sake of the fic, your fictionally older brother’s name is ryan
series masterlist: here
i get so lost inside your eyes / i’d walk through fire for you / lately you’ve been on my mind

it started when you & jack were both six.
***
you were in your front yard with your older brother and the two of you were playing hide and seek and it was his turn to count. you had the genius idea to hide in a tree because, why not? however, what you didn’t think about was how you’d get down.
“ready or not, here i come!” you hear ryan shout from the front porch. about five minutes pass and you think he won’t find you until you hear his voice.
“i see you y/n!” you look down below you and low and behold, your brother’s standing there with a shit-eating grin on his face.
“i don’t like you at all.” you pout and he laughs
“come on, it’s your turn to count.” you sigh dramatically and try your best to climb back down the tree. however, that plan seems to fail, and you fall out the tree onto your arm. a sharp pain shoots through your wrist and it has you immediately crying. ryan runs inside to go get your dad as you sit on the grass holding your hurting wrist.
a hand then outstretches itself to you and you look up and see a brunette boy smiling at you. he has one of his front teeth missing. you give him your hand that’s not hurting and he helps you up.
“what’s your name?” you sniffle and his smile grows
“i’m jack. i just moved in next door.” jack thought you were the prettiest girl his little six year old eyes had ever laid themselves on. and you, of course, thought boys still carried cooties.
“y/n, sweetheart, let’s get you to a hospital.” both you and jack look at your dad coming outside with ryan behind him.
“ill see you later. i hope your wrist is okay.” jack says his goodbyes and you, your brother, and dad head to the hospital.
the three of you got home late that night and sure enough, you broke your wrist. you had to get a cast later that week and it was very difficult to try and figure out how to go about your day with it on.
a knock sounds through your house and your dad answers it.
“y/n, there’s someone here for you!” you get off the couch where you were watching cartoons and head over to the door and see jack standing there with a bag of sharpies.
“i came to sign your cast,” he smiles and you look down at the white, barren cast with no signatures and you hold out your wrist to him. jack scrawls his name in big letters on your cast with a little doodle off hockey stick next to it, and your dad watches the small interaction with a smile on his face.
“jack, why don’t you tell your parents that they should come over tonight for dinner.” jack looks up at the sound of your father’s voice and nods, taking his bag of sharpies and heading back home.
this was the start to an amazing friendship.
***
ever since that day, jack and you have been inseparable. you two were like siamese twins. wherever one went, the other wasn’t far behind. he stuck with you throughout the awkwardness in middle school, which was peak jack & y/n.
the big question: did you ever see him as anything more than a best friend? not really. but jack? he was head over heels for you, and it only got worse in highschool.
jack knew it was stupid to have a crush on his best friend for this long, but look at you. you were his dream girl. he swore to himself that he would wait as long as he had to for you.
you were so supportive of his hockey career and came to every game you could attend. you would also support his brothers and he loved how you bonded with them like they were your own. you remembered everything he told you and you always threw him the best surprise parties for his birthday. you got along with his friends, and to be honest, they thought the two of you were a thing to begin with.
but a bonus? seeing you sport his jersey at every single hockey game. there was nothing more rewarding than seeing you cheering for him in the stands with that familiar hughes jersey. to top it off, you’d always wait for him after every game to give him his post-game hug.
“sweaty or not, hughes, i need my post-game hug.” was your go-to line and jack would be lying if he said he didn’t have it memorized. like the way he memorized how your eyes lit up when he’d come out the locker room. or the way your nose would scrunch up when he’d get his sweat on you. jack noticed everything about you.
fast forward to his draft day. you wet right by his side and you could sense the nerves radiating off of him. with quinn in the league, he felt like he had a lot to live up to. but when they called his name for the first overall pick, that all flew out the window.
***
both you and jack looked at each other with shocked faces and you both stood up, embracing the other in a hug. you weren’t even the one being drafted, but the moment still felt so surreal to you. the ringing in your ears had become louder and it felt like only you and jack were in the room.
you pull apart from the hug and place both hands on jack’s shoulders. tears were streaming down your face and you were wearing the biggest smile. jack swore that in that moment, nobody was more beautiful than you. his y/n. and that’s when reality set in with him. the girl he’s lived next to for most of his life, he’s be leaving soon. he wouldn’t get to see you every day. he wouldn’t get to take just a couple steps next to his house and already be at yours. no, you guys would be miles apart now.
he broke out of his thoughts and shoved them down, focusing on the present.
“i’m so proud of you, j.” he swiped the tears away from under your eyes and pressed a kiss to your forehead. he then gave the rest of his family hugs and walked to the stage to receive his devils’ jersey. the whole time he had his eyes focused on you. the fluorescent lighting above lit up your face just enough to make you look ethereal in his eyes, even more than you already did.
***
jack will say, his rookie year was tough. and even more so because he didn’t have you by his side at all. you were at boston, the school you’ve dreamed of going to and he couldn’t be more proud of you.
***
you had the hughes clan plus your dad and brother with you in your living room as you propped up your ipad and dialed jack, and on the second ring, he picked up.
“hey gorgeous.” he smiled from the other side
“woah j, your hair’s growing out.” you paused “please don’t say you’re getting a mullet.” everyone laughed and shook his head
“not these luscious locks. who’s with you?” you maneuver the ipad to show everyone with you and he says hi to everyone and they catch up for a bit before ellen nudges you.
“right.” you cough a bit and jack’s attention falls onto you and you hold up an envelope from boston university.
“is that?” you nod
“the answers lie in this envelope and i’m shaking so bad right now because oh my god jack, what if i don’t get in?” your rambling was always one of his favorite things about you.
“hey, whatever happens, happens. just know, it’ll all be okay, alright? you’re a smart girl, so boston would be stupid not to accept you.” you take a deep breath in and nod. ellen places a hand on your shoulder reassuringly.
“okay, here goes nothing.” you carefully tear open the envelope and pull out a piece of paper folded up into threes. you look back at jack and he nods encouragingly. you unfold the paper and begin to read it.
accepted
you drop the paper and look at jack, tears welling into your eyes.
“well?” he asks eagerly
“i got accepted!” you start to cry and jack’s smile widens.
“oh my god!” ellen’s the first to pull you into a hug and jack wishes nothing more than to be there right now, holding you in his arms.
“awh, jack’s crying.” luke says, and you pull away from the hug to look at the ipad in front of you. you sit back down and wipe at your eyes, softly smiling.
“don’t let your mascara run over me, j.” he laughs and looks up, then looking back at you.
“i’m so so proud and happy for you, y/n/n. more than you know.”
***
ever since college started for you though, communication hasn’t been the best between the two of you. you’ve both been so busy with your own things, and when you do talk, it’s not for very long.
however, when jack gets an invitation in the mail that says, “you’re invited to y/n l/n’s graduation!” he cancels anything he had planned on that date and he makes it his priority to be there.
***
jack wore one of his game day suits since the red would go well with the school colors and he makes the long drive to boston. he sees his mom’s familiar car and parks near it, getting out and making his way to look for his family and yours. once he spots them, due to luke’s tall head, he makes his way over.
“jack!” his mom is the first one to give him a hug and he smiles, hugging her back.
“hey ma, i missed you.”
“oh i missed you too sweetheart.” they pull apart and he says more hellos to the rest of his family, then taking his spot beside your brother. soon, the ceremony begins and when your name is called, everyone erupts into cheer. jack’s smile could not possibly get bigger than it is right now. you did it. you finally did it.
once everyone was called, the graduates were allowed to go to their families. you stood on a chair to look for the hughes’ and your dad and brother when you suddenly feel two arms wrap around your waist, twirling you around. you’re laughing and they set you down and you’re face-to-face with jack. you didn’t know if he’d be able to make it or not. and when did he get so muscly?
“oh my god. jack!” you jump into his arms and he laughs, holding you up. “you’re here. you’re really here.” you whisper and he places a kiss to the side of your head.
“i wouldn’t miss your graduation even if i was on my death bed. nothing is more important than watching you walk across that stage.” you sniffle and oh how you missed your best friend.
“i did it, j.”
“and i’m so proud of you, you hear me?” he sets you back down and pulls apart to look at you.
“i thought i was the only one that looks good in red, but i’m starting to think you proved me wrong.” you laugh and the sound is so melodic to jack’s ears. he needed to tell you how he felt soon, because seeing you right now is making his heart have palpitations.
***
since your graduation, you’ve moved to jersey and you teach first grade at one of the local elementary schools. jack was ecstatic when you told him you were moving to jersey. he even convinced you to buy a place near him. he even introduced you to his teammates. they all loved you, of course, and jack was glad to see you getting along with them.
he even bought you a hughes jersey and a ticket to the devil’s home opener. it was one thing to watch him play on your tv, but in person on the ice? even better.
that soon became a routine: go to every devil’s home game that you could and of course take pictures for your students to see.
fast forward to today. it was raining nonstop today and you had to have indoor recess for the kids, so you’d been stuck with them longer than usual, and you were starting to develop a headache. the odds just weren’t in your favor today.
as you were driving home, your tire went flat so you were stuck in the rain on the side of the road. so you call the only person you could think of.
“j, can you come pick me up? my tire went flat on the side of the road.”
in ten minutes, jack’s pulling up near your car and you get out and make your way to his passenger side. the car is a lot warmer compared to the outside temperature and you turn on your seat-warmer to hopefully help you a bit. in no time, he’s pulling up to your house and you get out without saying a word to him. you were tired and needed a nap and an advil.
“hey, what’s wrong?” he grabs your wrist before you can get inside and you shake your head. his headlights were beaming on the two of you and they were making your head hurt even more. the cold rain was also pelting down on the two of you and you hated the feeling of wet clothes.
“nothing. i’ve just had an awful day.” you release your wrist from his hold and walk up your front steps, putting the key in the door.
“i’m always here to listen, you know?”
“yes, jack, i know. but my head is killing me so i need to go lay down and get out of these wet clothes.”
“why won’t you talk to me? you used to tell me everything.” this set you over the edge and you turned around.
“jackson hughes, we’re grown adults now. we’re not the kids we used to be.”
“okay, but i’m your best friend.” you let out a frustrated sigh because you could not believe he was doing this right now.
“just go home, okay? we can talk about it tomorrow.”
“don’t you see it?” he says weakly
“quite frankly, i can’t see anything. there’s rain on my glasses. but enlighten me as to why you have me standing here in the pouring rain confused, rowden.” you used his middle name. you hardly ever did that.
“i’m in love with you, y/n! how blind are you? i’ve been so in love with you since the day you fell out your tree years ago when we were six. you’re all i think about before i go to sleep and when i wake up. and it’s been so hard to be your best friend all these years when all i want is nothing more than to be your boyfriend. lately you’ve been on my mind more than usual and when you- god, when you look at me with those eyes.
“i get lost. i forget where i’m at and i want to bask in that feeling forever. the feeling of just your eyes on me. like my draft day back in 2019 when it felt like we were the only two in the room. you’re the only person i’ve ever considered seeing myself with.”
you were rendered speechless. you cant lie and say that the thought of dating jack hadn’t crossed your mind before, because it has. it’s like the stars aligned because next thing you know, your feet are carrying you to jack and you attach your lips to his. he’s quick to reciprocate and you feel those metaphorical fireworks go off.
the two of you pull away and jack’s smiling wide.
“does this mean-” you cut him off and hit his shoulder, making him laugh.
“yes. now turn your car off and come inside where it’s warm.” he nods and you head inside, making your way to your bathroom to grab towels for the both of you.
“leave your shoes by the door!” you call out from your bedroom and jack makes his way to you, and you stick out some dry clothes to him.
“you can use the guest shower.” he nods and the two of you take your showers to better clean yourselves and change into the dry clothes.
later that night, you’re cuddled up on the couch together, going through a keepsake box you had (which was an old shoe box). you then pull out a card and both jack and you give each other a confused look. you open the card and gasp when you do. jack had a look of remembrance on his face as well and your heart melts at the memory.
***
you loved valentine’s day because it meant free candy and what seven year old doesn’t like free candy? the teacher let the girls pass out their valentines to the class first, and then the boys did theirs.
you were sitting at your desk, coloring away at a valentine’s day coloring sheet the teacher printed out for everyone, when a teddy bear, a card and some candy is placed in front of you. you set your fuchsia crayon down and look up to see jack standing there, face reddening.
“happy valentine’s day y/n.” he gave you his one-missing-tooth smile and you smiled back at him.
“thank you jack. i love it!”
***
“i should’ve seen the signs back then.” you trace your finger over jack’s first grade handwriting and softly smile, setting the card back in the box.
“whatever happened to that bear i got you?” you get up and walk into your bedroom, coming back out with the small, stuffed bear. jack gasps and you fondly smile at him.
“i couldn’t get rid of rowdy.”
“rowdy?” he quirks a brow at you and you nod
“named him after my favorite person ever.” jack pulls you into his side and kisses the side of your head.
he adored you more than anything in this world.

moving to jersey
illicit affairs au

pairing: sadie mercer x jack hughes
warnings: swearing, covid-19
summary: sadie and dawson move into new jersey and sadie begins school and her season and meets a certain duo.

moving from canada to the united states was it’s own culture shock, but moving from the small hometown of carbonear, newfoundland to hoboken, new jersey?? a whole new ball game. sadie mercer knew what she was getting herself into moving into a city in another country, and she was so grateful she wasn’t alone, and had her brother, dawson, to rely on when they’re so far away from their family. a 33 hour car ride to be exact, and dawson would keep reminding her as they waited for their uber to take them from the newark airport to their hotel in hoboken.
“what if i dont make the roster, sade? i can’t just leave you in new jersey and go back to the q.” sadie frowned.
“dawson, you are literally an amazing hockey player. and the devils would be stupid to not put you straight on their roster.” dawson smiled gently at his younger sister.
“you’re always so optimistic.” sadie rolled her eyes and went back to scrolling through her instagram feed.
soon enough the uber pulled up to the airport and the pair hopped in. the 25 minute ride over to their hotel was spent in comfortable silence, but sadie knew her brother was stressing. after all, their entire plan in new jersey was based on dawson making the roster so they could live together since sadie was attending rutgers university. of course they knew that there was a chance that wouldn’t happen, but they were hoping and praying dawson would make it through camp and onto the roster.
the uber dropped them off at their hotel, and they headed in to get to their room. their apartment lease wasn’t going to start until september 1st, but since that was the same day she was starting classes, they were in new jersey a week in advance. the 2 bed hotel room looked comfortable with a gorgeous view, and the two instantly laid back onto the beds with no want to plan to unpack anything. dawson only had a duffel bag and a backpack, while sadie had a suitcase and her school backpack. the rest of their stuff is supposed to be mailed in when they move into the apartment.
“dude i’m so hungry, those pretzels on the plan were shit.” dawson complained.
“i think there’s a dunkin like two blocks down, or we could go out to eat but i don’t know what’s open at 10pm.” dawson groaned and looked over at his sister,
“dunkin it is.” sadie lightly laughed at her brother’s dramatics, but she was starving as well so she slipped her birkenstocks back on and grabbed one of the keycards.
it felt so surreal to walk through the city, even if it was 3 blocks to a dunkin donuts, it was so drastically different to their canadian small town. when the siblings arrived at their lovely destination, they were happy to see that the dunkin was in fact still open, even at 10:23pm.
dawson got an iced tea with a panini and a boston creme donut, while sadie got herself a refresher, a bagel, and a small munchkin box.
the siblings sat at one of the tables towards the corner of the store and instantly started eating. after about 10 minutes of silence and eating, dawson got up to throw away his trash and sadie followed.
the pair walked down the street peacefully and enjoyed the late august breeze. sadie snapped a picture of the roads and sent it to the ‘mercer sibling groupchat’ on snapchat.
jessica was the first to open the snap and quickly responded with a picture of herself in her bed holding a thumbs down. sadie felt bad that she was leaving her sister all alone at home for her sophomore year of high school, but she was happy she got to send jess off for her freshman year since sadie was taking her classes online. riley opened it about 2 minutes later and sent back some funny filter, causing all 4 siblings to start sending funny photos.
once sadie and dawson got back to their hotel, dawson decided to take a shower first, leaving sadie to have to unpack atleast some of her things. about 10 minutes later, dawson came out of the bathroom with a pair of shorts and t-shirt on and began rummaging through his poorly packed bag for his toothbrush. sadie on the other hand, took this as her opportunity to take the bathroom over and grabbed her toiletry bag with her pjs and ran in.
“i wasn’t done in there!” dawson yelled through the now closed and locked bathroom door.
“i can’t hear you! i’m showering!” sadie yelled back as she twisted the shower knobs and got in.
once sadie was finally done with her shower, brushed her hair and her teeth, and did her extensive skincare routine, she opened the door and smiled at her brother as she passed his bed.
“finally..” he groaned and got up, with his found toothbrush in hand.
for the next couple days, sadie and dawson spent their days out in hoboken and newark to get used to the city. dawson, of course, couldn't let the week be a full rest week and started attending a gym nearby, and occasionally dragging sadie with him, resulting in being forced to make tiktoks with her as payment.
soon enough, september 1st rolled around and sadie was beginning her classes and preparation for preseason which was starting the following monday. her schedule was set up nicely by one of the athletic’s guidance counselors, so she only had class once on monday and wednesday, twice on tuesday and thursday. luckily, they were also all at or after 11am. sadie also was lucky to have some classes with some of her teammates so it was easier for her to become friends with them.
liza ryndych and sofia maksimova were also rookies this year, but they were freshmen. sadie, liza, and sofia became a trio during practice as they all were fly/free strokes, and that translated to outside of the pool.
the beginning of september blew by and devils camp was approaching sooner and sooner. sadie was happy to make friends and be in new jersey living out her dream, but each time she came home to her and her brother’s hotel room, the idea of dawson not making roster became more and more prominent.
it was september 20th, only two days before camp was to start and sadie only had her elective class at 1:30pm. sadie was running late to practice this morning, so she didn’t get the chance to grab herself breakfast. once practice finished at the aquatic center, sadie was starving. on her way back, her and her ‘big’ sofia chichaikina decide to stop by one of the delis in hoboken.
sofia parks her car a little farther up the street from the deli since all the parking spaces right in front of the small shop were taken.
the girls begin to cross the street after the walk sign lights up and make casual small talk about how much practice drained them that morning, until sadie hears a loud boy-ish scream and someone yells out,
"watch out!" causing sadie to stop dead in her tracks in the middle of the street to face the noise. thankfully, sofia had some common sense in her and pulls sadie out from the middle of the road as two boys speed past them on electric scooters yelling out a quick apology.
"assholes!" sofia yells out at them and flips them off.
"are you crazy?? why would you stop in the middle of the street!" she lectured as they walked on the sidewalk.
the two boys park their scooters in front of the deli and jog over to the two girls about to enter.
"hey, we're so sorry about uh.. you know... almost running you guys over.." the slightly taller boy stammers out.
"yeah, just because you're on a scooter, doesn't mean you don't follow basic traffic laws." sofia bit back at him before going on a rant about how their stupidity put not only sadie and sofia's lives in danger but also their own.
sadie took sofia's rant as an opportunity to examine both of the boys. the stuttering boy who almost ran over sadie had longer hair, blue eyes, and a growing in mustache-beard combination. he was wearing a grey nike t-shirt with a pair of basic athletic shorts.
the other boy, who had yelled in the first place for sadie to watch out, was about the same height as his friend. he had long brown hair- lighter than his friends, coming out from under his baseball cap and curling upwards at the ends. he also had blue eyes, but his seemed softer to sadie. he was also wearing a t-shirt and athletic shorts, but the simple outfit still made sadie swoon a little.
"we're really sorry about almost running you guys over with our scooters. it was irresponsible on our ends, we should've watched where we were going." he interrupted and then nudged his friend.
"yeah, we're really sorry. uh, i'll be sure to make sure i'm following traffic patterns next time." sadie looked up at the two boys and sofia rolled her eyes.
"it's okay, sometimes it happens.. i guess. but, thanks for the heads up atleast." the boys nodded back at her, so the girls decided to take that as their que to exit that awkward conversation and finally get their breakfast.
"wait! let us pay for your breakfast, it's the least we could do." the girls looked at eachother, and then back at them.
"sure." they responded. i mean, what college students would pass up free breakfast?
the two girls got on line while the boys went to grab drinks from the fridge. sadie watched them as the one in the hat took out a raspberry snapple and held it up while looking at her, she smiled at him and nodded her head.
"you like him, don't you?" sofia said to her, snapping sadie out of her thoughts.
"what do you mean? i just met him. i don't even know his name or anything. he doesn't know mine." she rambled until sofia smacked her, gently, so she'd realize the boys were back.
"here's your drink, you like snapple?" sadie looked up at him, smiled, and almost got lost in his eyes before she responded,
"oh yeah, one of my favorites." he smiled back at her and sadie thought she was going to melt away in the middle of a deli.
"i'm jack, by the way, my friends ty. he's the one who uh, you know.."
"oh! yeah. i'm sadie, and this is sofia."
soon enough, they finally got to the the front of the line and ordered their breakfast sandwiches. the girls had planned to just eat theirs on the way back to school, but the boys insisted they ate together at one of the tables outside. they had just a simple conversation, mostly the girls talking about school and swim, until sadie realized they've been talking for 15 minutes and they know nothing about the boys.
"wait so do you guys go to school around here too?" the boys glanced at eachother, trying to see how they wanted to play this,
"we actually play hockey." ty revealed quietly, and jack looked over at him like he just told the girls the biggest secret in the world.
"i didn't know rutgers had a hockey team." sadie nodded in agreement to sofia.
"so you guys live around here?" jack changed the subject 'smoothly'.
the group continued to talk until it was time for sofia to leave for one of her classes. the girls were driving over to the new brunswick campus when sadie suddenly put her phone down,
"fi, we didn't get their numbers. or like anything about them other than their names." sofia rolled her eyes,
"i knew you liked one of them, it's okay maybe we'll run into those boys again. hopefully not in a moving vehicle."
little did sadie know, she would run into those boys again, but not where she expected it..
AN: ahhhhhhhh i know this took absolutely forever to come out, and honestly i had the idea in my head but i just wasn't sure of the perfect way to execute it. this'll be the background leading up to the beginning of the song, illicit affairs by my bae taylor swift. let me know what you think about this and any requests!!

surprise visits
pairing: jack hughes x fem!reader
warning: profanity, talks of awful family
summary: jack visits you during the season
a/n: everyone needs a jack
masterlist: here

unlike other kids on campus, you were dreading spring break. all spring break meant was a week of you by yourself in your dorm with nothing to do. all of your friends would go back home or go on vacation. you, on the other hand, didn’t. this was the same for holidays. just you in your dorm catching up on netflix.
once you left for college and told your family you wanted nothing to do with them, they cut you out of their lives. you admit, at first you didn’t mind it because less toxicity for you to deal with. but then the loneliness set in with you. you had nobody. no one to lean on, nothing.
but then you met jack. and he was a breath of fresh air. you met him during your gap year at a small bodega in jersey while visiting a friend.
jack showed you what it felt like to have someone to support you. to have someone to care about you; someone to listen to you. you never knew how much you needed it until you met him.
then reality set in. college started, hockey following soon after. you and jack saw less of each other, but still communicating nonetheless.
which leads us to now. your roommate left two days ago to head home to stay with her family. leaving you all alone in your dorm where you were lying in your bed watching breaking bad.
“beat his ass, walter!” you were cheering to nobody in particular when a knock on your door halted your actions. you were confused, because you don’t remember inviting anyone over. and your roommate couldn’t have since she’s gone. you grabbed the hockey stick lying by the door and held it close to you as you unlocked the door, swinging it open. your eyes widened however, and you dropped the stick when you saw who was standing on the other side.
“jack?” he smiles and opens his arms. you launch yourself into them and he softly laughs, picking you up and walking back into your dorm, kicking the door closed behind him. he sets you on your bed gently and drops the bag you didn’t even notice he was holding beside your bed. he then takes his shoes off and climbs into the bed with you.
he pulls you into his arms, his cologne that you missed a lot enveloping you. you tuck your head under his chin, resting your head on his chest and listening to his soft heartbeat.
“i missed you pretty girl.” he places a kiss on your head and it makes you smile.
“i missed you more, j.”
“oh! nico gave me something to bring to you.” he then sits up and grabs his bag, pulling it onto the bed. he reaches into it and pulls out a bobble head of nico. you both laugh and you take it, getting off of your bed and setting it on the small desk you had.
“he said since he couldn’t come visit, bobbie head him would be here in replace.”
“it’s… something? anyways, what are you doing here? not that i’m complaining, but don’t you have a game?” he shrugs it off like it’s nothing.
“i kinda got a concussion last game and they’re putting me out until i get the all clear. so i figured i’d come see my girl.” he smiles, pulling you back into him.
“you’re gonna be okay?” you place a hand on his cheek and he softly nods, leaning down to place a kiss on your lips.
“now that i’m with you i’ll be okay.”
“so cheesy,” you scrunch your nose.
“oh but you love it.”

jack hughes is love fr.
Personification of Love- Platonic! Jack Hughes
ft trevor zegras x reader and best friend!quinn x reader
summary: even though your dating trevor, and have never seen jack as anything more than a friend, you call jack ‘my love.’ and everyone wants to know why.
a/n i don’t love this but i’ve been thinking about it so much i could not get hw done so i busted it out rq! (ps it’s highly unedited)
the door to the bedroom you and your boyfriend, trevor, were currently residing in at the lake house was thrown open, waking you both up in the process.
this shouldn’t be a problem, right? wrong.
see, you’re quinn’s best friend, and you had your own room at the lake house for the summer— a room in which you were not currently in. apparently alex let slip that you and trevor are dating to quinn, and he wasn’t exactly thrilled that you two kept it a secret for three months.
“quinnathan, what in gods name are you doing waking us up at 8:30 in the morning?” you groaned into trevor’s chest.
that’s when it hit you.
you jolted up halfway and pulled the comforter up to your chin.
“are you wearing clothes?” quinn asked flatly. you pulled down the blanket and snapped your underwear band for him and jack to see, “i’m wearing a shirt and underwear.”
“good. trevor, come with me, jack, go to y/n.”
you slid away from trevor and out stretched your arms, making grabby hands at jack, “come here my love!”
jack climbed into the bed and collapsed on top of you and the blanket and wrapped his arms around you. your hands went straight to his upper body and you started to pet his hair.
“now hold on, before i get the best friend grilling, i gotta know why you still call jack your love,” trevor said as he sat up.
you tightened your hold on jack and buried your face into his neck, “i don’t wanna say.”
“as your boyfriend,” trevor said, poking you teasingly as he emphasized boyfriend as a tell that he’s only intrigued, not mad, “i would like to know why he is your love.”
jack sat up to look at you, and quinn also looked like he wanted to know. you sighed and sat up against the headboard. you had a legitimate reason. it wasn’t just a pet name you said one day and it stuck.
“it’s sappy and mushy and cringy, you guys really don’t want to know.”
“well now i have to know,” jack said.
“spill it, y/n/n,” quinn echoed.
“fine. but when i say this, know i’m talking about love as an umbrella term, not as i love you, z, okay?”
when everyone agreed to your terms for listening to your reasoning, you began.
“when i think about the personification of love, or if love was a person, i think of how kind love would be. love would make you feel safe no matter where you were, and would go out of their way to make you feel that if a situation arose to where you didn’t feel safe. love would make you feel like anywhere could be home with them. your home, love’s home, a target parking lot.
“love’s laugh would be so contagious that it could pull you out of the worst of moods, even for just a second. and their smile would light up a room and make you dread the day someone put out that flame. love would put everything they had into a hug, or even a simple touch on the shoulder, to make you know that they mean it. there’s feeling and purpose into every touch they give. love somehow would always know when you need them, even if you didn’t explicitly say so. love would be there for you in ways you didn’t even know were possible, even from hundreds of miles away.
“being loved by love would be a privilege and a gift. love would love to fiercely, that you never question whether they do or not. love would express their love in a way that deserves its own word. and if that isn’t jack hughes, i don’t know what is.”
you were looking down the entire time you spoke, fidgeting with the hem of your shirt around your hands. you looked up when you felt the bed dip and locked eyes with quinn, who looked like he could cry.
“you’re a poet, did you know that?” quinn said earnestly.
you chuckled and blushed at your best friend’s words, “thanks quinny.”
“that’s the biggest compliment i’ve ever received,” jack said. he gathered you into his arms and hugged you tightly from behind, with everything he had.
trevor caught your attention by grabbing your hand and holding it close to his heart. you were kinda scared the whole time you spoke that he would be offended. it wasn’t that you didn’t think of him when you thought about love. it’s that when you think of how you want to love, you think of how jack loves.
“hey babe?”
“yeah?”
“i jack hughes you,” trevor smiled.
you all erupted into laughter until your stomachs hurt. your fears were immediately wiped away, and you weren’t embarrassed anymore that you told that to them.
“i jack hughes you, too, trev.”
trevor leaned over and kissed you softly, grinning into the kiss.
“alright, off to get the protective best friend talk, wish me luck!”

the "shush i'm a good boyfriend remember" omgggg😭😭😭
party time
luke hughes x reader
summary: after a game loss, there's a fun party to make it hurt less, but some guy tries to flirt with you.
requested: yes!
warnings: creepy guy at the party, alcohol, luke punches someone, beer pong, umich boys being protective
Only the hockey team would want a party after a loss. Maybe it was the distraction of alcohol or fun after a hard loss, but they wanted a party. When Luke found you outside the locker room at Yost, he was hugging you, hair wet still, mumbling in your ear about a party.
The jersey you were wearing should have claimed you as hands-off. Luke’s last name and number plastered on your back. The maize jersey was easy to spot in the crowd, many of the partygoers still in blue and maize. The sleeves of his jersey were long, covering your hands unless you pulled them up. Luke loved having you in his jersey at games. You always wore one.
You weren’t sure how Nolan collected so much alcohol in a short amount of time, but there was no shortage of beer and booze. In one hand, you had a drink. In the other, you had a crappy pong ball. Dylan Duke had pulled you into a game of beer pong against Mark and Ethan. You weren’t exactly good at pong, but it was always fun to play. The paint on the table you helped paint last season was chipped, but it never stopped anyone from playing.
Luke was off somewhere, talking to Rutger and Adam in a corner. A beer in his hand, anger still brewing after the 4-2 loss. Luke would sometimes glance in your direction, just to check on you. The music blasted through Nolan’s house. You could barely hear yourself think. It didn’t help that you now had alcohol pumping through your body.
Sinking a cup, you shouted in celebration, Dylan giving you a high-five as Ethan moved the cup to the side of the table. Dylan and you both sinking cups for that turn. “Balls back gentlemen,” you beckoned as Mark rolled the pong balls back to Dylan and you. Luca, Mackie, and Nolan watched the game, along with some other partygoers. Dylan made another cup, and you missed yours as Mark blew the ball out of the cup.
You didn’t realize how much you had actually had to drink. Many of the boys keeping an eye on you for Luke. Most of the team were like your brothers and loved having you around and loved how you made Luke happy. You asked Mackie to get you another drink, and he returned with another cup of beer.
The game ended soon after that. Seamus and Grano having downs moved into Mark and Ethan’s spots. “I’m going to tap out,” you said, and Dylan booed you jokingly. You would rather leave the game on a win. Mackie took your spot at the table, and you walked over to get a new drink, tossing your empty can. Your eyes scanned the crowd, looking for your boyfriend.
Luke was tall, making him easy to spot. You smiled to yourself as you began walking over to your boyfriend. Before you could get in eyesight of Luke, someone stopped you. You recognized him, but you had no idea what his name was. “Hi.” You could barely hear the guy over the music. “Hi, sorry,” you tried moving past the guy, but he wouldn’t let you. “I’m Ben.”
“(Y/N). Sorry, I’m just trying to get by,” you attempted to move past him again, but he wouldn’t let you. “I haven’t seen you around before.” You saw red flags in your mind and alarms going off in your head. Quickly glancing around, you tried to find one of the boys. “I’m friends with Nolan, I should really get going.” You tried once more to get by him, but his hand caught your wrist, “I was hoping I could get to know you a little better.”
“I’m kinda trying to meet with someone,” you laughed nervously pulling on your wrist. “Come on,” he moved closer to you, “don’t play hard to get.” The drink in your hand tumbled to the ground as you felt even more nervous.
Before you could mention your boyfriend across the room, you felt a hand on your shoulder, and Ben was suddenly dropping your wrist. Nolan pulled you under his right arm protectively, Jacob Truscott on the other side of you. “Hey (Y/N), this guy bothering you?” Trus asked. “I want Luke,” you mumbled. Jacob was rushing off to get Luke as Nolan checked on you. “You okay? You need some water?”
Luke was pissed when Jacob came to get him. “Luke, it’s (Y/N). Some asshat was bothering her.” Luke left his conversation with Rutger and Adam and was immediately making their way to you.
Ben had attempted to sneak off, obviously not wanting to get involved with the hockey team, bumping right into Luke. “Heard you were bothering (Y/N).” Luke looked at you, giving you a look of worry. “I got her Luke. I’ll go get (Y/N) some water and take her up to my room to rest while you take care of our new friend here,” Nolan said.
You didn’t miss how Rutger was nearby, ready to help Luke with whatever was about to happen. The pent-up anger from the loss and the fact that this guy had bothered you was enough to justify a fight in his eyes.
Nolan left you in his room with a water bottle, letting you sober up a little until Luke got there.
Luke practically shoved Ben out of the house. “Fuck off dude. Don’t fuck with other people’s partners or make girls uncomfortable,” Luke stated. It was a miracle he didn’t punch Ben right then and there. Ben stared at Luke, “Don’t leave your girl alone at a party then.” Luke didn’t take another second to decide, his hand colliding with Ben’s face. After that, Ben was scrambling off, Rutger telling Luke to go see you. Luke shook his hand a little to get some of the pain to leave.
Luke was quick to make his way up to you. Nolan, who was standing outside his bedroom, left when Luke got there. You were shaken up, sipping on your water when Luke walked in. “Hi baby,” Luke spoke softly, shutting the door behind him. The music from downstairs was now muffled. He sat next to you on the bed and watched as you finished your water before hugging you. “I got you baby, don’t worry. I’m sorry for leaving you alone. Rutger is calling us an Uber. We’re going to go home, okay?” Luke said as he rubbed your back.
Rutger and Ethan watched the two of you climb into the back of an Uber, just to make sure nothing happened (as if Luke would let anything else happen). The two of you were soon in his room, sobering up on crackers and water in his bed. “Luke?” you called out softly. He hummed and looked over at you. “You’re a good boyfriend.”
Luke smiled and let you lay into his side. “Did you punch that guy?” you questioned. “Shush, I’m a good boyfriend remember.”

AWWWW LUKEY🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
ONE BED — LUKE HUGHES
luke hughes x fem!reader
FAITHLYNN’S 500 CELLY!
🌷: “why are you awake right now?” with Luke
notes: i love writing for Luke so i’m so excited for the amount of celly blurb requests i have for him
if i had known that i would be stuck sharing a bed with the one guy i don’t get along with, i never would’ve come on this trip. i should’ve known not to trust Ethan with booking the airbnb, but i reluctantly gave him the benefit of the doubt, believing in him. but then we arrived and we realized that Ethan booked a place that had the space for him, Mackie, Dylan, and Mark and their girlfriends to share rooms, with only one room left over. the problem? there are two people left. me, and Luke. leaving us to have to share the room, and the bed.
now here i am, laid back to back with the guy i spend most of my time arguing with, with a pillow border between us. Luke fell asleep relatively quickly, because of course he did, but i lay wide awake, my mind running a million miles an hour, stuck on the fact that that i’m right next to the guy who hates my guts, but that i’m secretly head over heels for.
when my childhood best friend, Dylan, first introduced me to his roommates and friends from the UMich hockey team, i had instantly gained a crush on the tall curly haired defenseman. he was sweet, friendly, insanely talented on the ice, and incredibly attractive, what more could i want? but then around two weeks later, we were all hanging out at sophomore house, watching a hockey game and i happened to make a comment about how attractive one of the players was. my downfall? i hadn’t put two and two together and realized that the player was Luke’s brother. which in turn, started an argument between Luke and i; him accusing me of using him to get to his brother, and me insisting that i wasn’t aware he even had brothers, let alone been using him to get to them.
and that brings us to now. Luke still hates me, using any chance to argue and make me out to be a bad guy, and despite his obvious dislike of me, i still have an enormous crush on him. i toss and turn in the bed, trying to ignore the way my heart pounds from our close proximity. finally giving up, i settle for laying on my back, heaving out a deep sigh and grabbing my phone as i decide to scroll through instagram.
“why are you awake right now?” Luke’s voice startles me, causing me to drop my phone on my face. he huffs out a rude laugh at my misfortune.
“i couldn’t sleep.” i mutter back, picking my phone back up and rubbing my sore nose.
“so you choose to jostle the whole bed and wake me up too?” he retorts.
“i didn’t mean to wake you up.” i tell him. “it was an accident. i was trying to get comfortable, but i gave up.”
“well stop moving. i’m trying to sleep.” he huffs. i turn my head to look at him but all i see is the pillow border between us. not being able to see his reactions gives me a confidence boost, and before i can stop myself, i’m speaking again.
“Luke?” i whisper.
“what?” he grumbles.
“why do you hate me?” i ask, turning on my side to face the pillow border.
“what?” he repeats.
“why do you hate me?” i ask again. “i mean, i know you think i was using you to get to Jack, but—”
“i don’t think that.” he cuts me off. “i was being stupid when i accused you of that. you’ve been friends with Duke since you guys were five, you didn’t even know who i was until two weeks before that fight. i realize now, that you didn’t know Jack was my brother. i had a bad day that day and i took it out on you. i’m sorry.”
“then why do you still hate me?” i question.
“i don’t. i never did, really. i actually really like you. but i know you hate me, understandably, after what i did. and i’m not necessarily good at being the bigger person, so i just kept up with the fighting and sarcastic remarks.” he explains.
“i don’t hate you, Luke.” i whisper. “quite the opposite, actually.”
i hear shuffling from the other side of the bed before Luke’s hand comes up and pulls away the pillow between our heads, his face coming into view.
“what did you just say?” he asks.
“i don’t hate you?” i reply, confused.
“no, the second part.” my heart races as he asks me to repeat my confession.
“quite the opposite.” i mumble.
“but the opposite of hate is…” he trails off.
“love. okay maybe i don’t quite love you yet, but i definitely really like you.” i tell him.
“you like me? like, like like me?” i laugh at his words.
“well, we’re not in elementary school.” i giggle. “but yeah, Luke. i like like you.”
“even after i was an asshole to you?” he questions.
“even after you were an asshole to me.” i confirm. “i’ve seen the way you are with others, and were with me for two weeks. you’re kind, and gentle, and a total sweetheart. it doesn’t hurt that you’re pretty hot too.”
“hotter than Jack?” he jokes.
“yeah, Luke.” i laugh. “hotter than Jack.”

nico is actually the sweetest ever i love love love this
CRUEL SUMMER — NICO HISCHIER
nico hischier x fem!reader
FAITHLYNN’S 500 CELLY!
🌻: Cruel Summer with Nico
maybe it wasn’t the best idea to join my best friend in his home country for the summer. saying yes to spending two months with Nico in Switzerland was definitely not my brightest moment, because now i’m sat in the grass, watching as my very shirtless, very hot, best friend with benefits jumps into a lake.
okay, maybe it’s not the coming to Switzerland that was the problem. maybe it was the nights i’ve spent sneaking over to his room, maybe it was the time i spent tangled up in his sheets only to have nothing change between us. maybe it’s the fact that i wait with baited breath for him to either confess that he loves me or for him to tell me we should stop our late night activities. in whatever case, this has been a cruel summer with him.
**
i’m outside the bar, waiting for Nico’s sister, Nina to bring the car around. Nico stands next me, helping support my drunken self, and whispering sweet words in my ear.
“it’s okay, i’ve got you, y/n.” he tells me as Nina pulls up. he helps me into the back of the car before taking a seat in the front with his sister. he turns to look at me when Nina starts driving. “don’t worry, i’ll take care of you when we get back.”
his sweet nature makes tears well in my eyes, and knowing that he’s doing this out of the kindness of his heart, even though we’re only friends, makes me let out a sob. i want to be more. i want to be so much more. i want him to take care of me because he loves me. i want to be able to stay in his bed on the morning instead of sneaking back to my own. i want to call him my boyfriend and tell him i love him. but i can’t do those things, because we’re only friends.
“hey, hey! what’s wrong? why are you crying?” his tone is sweet and comforting, his eyes full of worry, and it only makes me cry harder. “y/n/n, please tell me what’s wrong.”
i continuously shake my head, refusing to spill the words that rest on my tongue. even in my drunken state, i know that would end badly. it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to reach his families house and Nico quickly helps me out of the car and to his bedroom, where he grabs me some sweatpants and a t-shirt to change into. he waits in the hall while i change and when he comes back in, i’m sat on his bed. he holds a pair of fuzzy socks he must have retrieved from my room, and offers to help me take my makeup off and brush my teeth, which makes me start crying again.
“okay, hey. please tell me why you’re crying. did i do something? i don’t understand.” he whispers, crouching down to look at my face. he looks down for a second to pull the socks onto my feet, and the gesture is my breaking point. i let the words i’ve been dying to say all summer, get free.
“i love you. ain’t that the worst thing you’ve ever heard?” he freezes, and i mentally prepare myself for him to reject me. but when he looks up at me again, he wears a wide grin.
“i love you too.” he whispers, rising to his feet and pulling me up with him so that my chest is against his.
“you do?” i sniffle.
“yes. did you really think i was sleeping with you if i didn’t love you? i don’t do that, y/n/n.” he tells me. he bends down, capturing my lips in his, engaging us in a slow and passionate kiss. pulling away, he tucks a lock of hair behind my ear. “and to answer your question; i think it might be the best thing i’ve ever heard.”

KARMA IS HER BOYFRIEND.
KARMA— JACK HUGHES
jack hughes x fem!reader
part of the Midnights Fic List
summary: in which y/n’s ex-best friend has been gossiping behind y/n’s back saying that Jack should be with her instead, so y/n shows that karma goes both ways.
specific lyrics: “you’re talking shit, for the hell of it. addicted to betrayal.” and “ask me what i learned from all those years. ask me what i earned from all those tears.” and “karma is my boyfriend, karma is a god, karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend, karma’s a relaxing thought” and “karma is the guy on the screen coming straight home to me.”
warnings: toxic friendship mentions, light profanity
notes: this is pretty short, i didn’t feel like this one should be too long, i wanted it to be pretty simple just like the song
“did you hear about what Carley said last week?” i hear as soon as i sit down in my seat at brunch.
“no.” i shake my head. “what did she say now?”
“she was out with her friends, and Nicole and Jesper were sat by her at the restaurant; overheard her saying that Jack should be with her instead of you. apparently she’s convinced that he’s only pitying you and she deserves him because she’s ‘richer, prettier, and has more followers’.” Ryleigh says. “what a bitch! i can’t believe you were ever friends with her.“
“karma is a bitch, it’ll get to her one day.” i shrug. “she wasn’t much different when we were friends. claimed i ‘stole’ Jack from her because ‘she saw him first’, but he and i had already been dating by the time she saw him. we just hadn’t been public yet.”
“but, you’re literally the sweetest person i’ve ever met. i’m just saying, i don’t understand how you could’ve been friends with her for so long.” Darya chimes in, setting her mimosa down in front of her.
“i was friends with her since we were ten, she’s always been this way. a lot of my tears were from her hand. she insisted she would do things in the name of friendship and ‘bettering me’, but eventually, i learned that she was just a horrible person and i should stop excusing her actions. as i said, karma will get to her eventually.” i explain as i scan the menu in front of me. i know how Carley is. it doesn’t exactly surprise me that she’s talking bad about me, she used to do it even while we were friends.
“well, karma isn’t coming fast enough. that girl needs to be humbled soon.” Ryleigh exclaims and Darya nods in agreement. before i can respond, the waiter comes to take our orders and the subject changes.
**
i’m sat in glass seats at a Devils home game, waiting for them to come out for warmups. i switch between glass seats and the WAGS box every few games. i like hanging out with the girls but, i love to see the smile on Jack’s face when the Devils score. especially when he scores and he gets to look over at me and see that i watched and that i’m cheering for him. it’s not too long before warmups start that someone sits at the end of my row, and i look over to see Carley and one of her friends. i choose to ignore her and the looks i know she’s giving me. i have a right to be here, and she’s allowed to come to a game if she wants, i don’t control that. it’s when the warmups start that i have a problem with her. i’m looking down at my phone, texting Ryleigh when Jack skates by, banging a hand on the glass in front of me to get my attention. i startle, jumping in my seat and dropping my phone, and he laughs.
“hi baby!” i immediately recognize the voice yelling down the row. i look over to see Carley staring straight at Jack as he skates past her. he turns around, skating backwards and giving her a weird look before looking at me with a ‘what the fuck?’ face. i shrug my shoulders. what possessed her to make her think that calling my boyfriend ‘baby’ is okay?
i let the comment roll off my back, it’s whatever. i know that Jack has tons of fans, he’s talented, he’s hot, he’s sweet, he’s a total package, i get it.
“score a goal for me tonight, babe!” i hear her call out. that’s when my problem starts. and my anger only increases after warmups, when i overhear her talking to her friend. “eventually, he’s gonna realize how much better he can do than y/n. and i’ll be there with open arms when he does.”
i remind myself to stay in my seat. i’ve turned a blind eye to her glares, i’ve let her gossiping fall on deaf ears instead of making a scene or causing drama, and i know it’ll be worth it in the end. i was raised to remember that karma is a powerful thing, and that it goes both ways. you do bad things, something will knock you down a peg. you do good things, you’ll have good luck. it’s common sense. but apparently she didn’t get the message.
**
“babe, come look at this!” Jack calls to me from our bed. it’s officially the off season and Jack and i have been at the Hughes lake house for the past couple days. it’s been nice being surrounded by his family and even a few of our friends.
“what’s up, love?” i ask, walking out of the closet where i was picking out a cover up to wear out on the boat. i slip the sundress i chose over my head and pull it down over my bikini.
“come see what Bratter just sent me.” i flop myself down on the bed next to him, laying on my side and cuddling into him, an arm wrapping around his torso. he tilts his phone screen towards me and i read the text that Jesper sent him.
—
From: Jesper Bratt
took Nicole out to lunch and she pointed out a girl that she said is obsessed with you. said her name was Carley. heard her talking to someone, saying you guys were destined to be together 😂 even heard her say that y/n isn’t good enough for you? does this girl have nothing better to do?
—
“she really just won’t stop, will she?” my question is rhetorical but Jack answers anyways.
“she’ll get the message soon enough. i don’t want her.” his words make me furrow my brows but i nod anyways. “you ready to head out?”
“yeah, let’s go.” we stand from the bed, making our way out of the bedroom and down the stairs, meeting the others in the living room before heading down to the dock and onto the boat. i sit and watch as all the guys take turns wakesurfing, choosing not to participate and instead enjoying the summer evening air.
“babe! babe, c’mere!” Jack calls from the back of the boat, where he’s currently wakesurfing. i stand, walking over and bending over the back of the boat so i can hear him.
“look at you, superstar!” i chime, grinning at him. he laughs and shakes his head.
“no, i wanted to say that i wanna take you on a walk around the lake when we get back.” i admire his smile for a few moments, just nodding in response and watching his face all lit up with joy. this man makes me so happy.
i keep myself rooted in that spot until he decides he’s done and gets back on the boat, letting Luke take his place. he looks at me with a wicked grin and i know exactly what he’s planning to do, but the boat is only so big and he catches me quite easily. pulling me to him, getting me wet with the cold water dripping from his hair and body. i shiver and let out a squeal; halfheartedly attempting to push him away. i feel my feet lift off the ground as Jack moves over to the bench seats, sitting down and pulling me onto his lap.
“now my cover up is all wet!” i feign a pout, but all he does is laugh, placing a gentle kiss on the tip of my nose.
“i’ll make it up to you. promise.” he squeezes me tighter to his chest and i shuffle down in order to lay my head on his chest, getting the side of my face wet in the process, but i don’t care. “i love you.”
“i love you too.” i smile, turning my head slightly to lay a kiss on his chest.
*
when we park back at the dock, Jack lets the guys know we’ll be back up to the house soon and pulls his hoodie over his head. he slings one arm around my shoulders, holding me to his side, and sticks his free hand in his hoodie pocket. we continue to walk along the lakeside in silence, just enjoying the last moments of sunset and the sounds of nature. i stop Jack a few times in order to point out pretty birds or various other beautiful nature moments. i let go of him once more, stepping closer to the water and letting him fall behind me.
“Jack, look at the way the sunset is reflecting off the lake! it’s gorgeous.” i turn to look back at him, checking to see i have his attention, but when i catch sight of him, one knee on the ground with a ring box opened in his hands and a watery smile on his face, my hands fly up to my mouth.
“y/n, i texted Quinn right after i met you, telling him i just met the love of my life. at the time, i thought maybe i was over exaggerating, but then i got to know you, and i knew i wasn’t. these past two and a half years with you have been the best of my life, and i was hoping you’ll choose to continue that. y/f/n, will you marry me?” his voice wavers, laced with emotion, and tears spring to my eyes.
“yes. god, yes! a million times yes!” i exclaim and he takes my hand, slipping the ring in my finger as he stands and i pull him into a kiss. my hands hold his face to mine and he grips my hips. pulling away, i wipe the tears from his cheeks and then mine. “i love you so much.”
“i love you so much more, pretty girl.”

IDK HOW I MISSED THIS BUT THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL
SNOW ON THE BEACH — LUKE HUGHES
luke hughes x fem!reader
part of the Midnights Fic List.
summary: in which shy, introverted y/n meets extroverted frat boy Luke and he takes a liking to her, even though everyone thinks they’re an odd match.
specific lyrics: “it’s like snow on the beach, weird but fuckin’ beautiful.”
notes: i really wanted frat boy Luke in order to really have them contrast each other, but i also didn’t wanna take away the hockey element or split up the UMich boys, so… Hockey House is a frat now. also, i don’t think i like this one, i feel like i could’ve done so much better but like halfway through writing this, my brain short-circuited and i couldn’t think of anything.
the library is packed. i should’ve expected it, with it being so close to finals week and all, but it still disappointed me nonetheless.
this was my favorite place to escape and read when my obnoxious dorm-mate had her friends over. it was quiet and usually pretty empty. so i could usually sit and read for a few hours until i was sure none of Alex’s friends were still there. none of them knew how to use an inside voice, and with our dorm just being one big room, they constantly thought that meant i would want to join in on their conversations. which were mainly gossip about the hockey team. so, coming in and finding every space in the library full, ruined my plans. i don’t want to go back to my dorm and be subjected to them debating which UMich hockey player has the cutest smile, so i guess that leaves me with one option; find a seat.
i let loose a sigh and scan the room for who seems to be the quietest. i hate small talk. i find a table with only one person sat at it, a guy with one airpod in and a textbook laid out in front of him, and decide that’s the one. i walk over, fully planning on just motioning to ask if i can sit, but when i come to a stop in front of the table and he doesn’t even look up, i know i’ll have to speak up. i take a deep breath before i let out the quietest ‘excuse me’ known to man. the boy still doesn’t look up from the textbook, and i don’t blame him, he probably didn’t even hear me.
“excuse me.” i say slightly louder. this time the boy finally looks up, but i’m struck on what to say. suddenly, all the mentally rehearsed words have left my mind. this may be the cutest boy i have ever seen.
“can i help you?” his voice is soft. not judgmental or rude like what i would’ve expected from him after i came over and interrupted his studying just to end up staring at him. i shake myself out of my thoughts and give a light nod.
“do you mind if i sit here?” i motion towards a chair diagonal from his. “everywhere else is full.”
the boy nods.
“oh, yeah, go ahead.” i give him a small and grateful smile before depositing myself in the chair. pulling my book and a few highlighters out from my tote bag before hanging it up on the back of my chair. i open my book to where i left off, setting the bookmark on the table. but before i can start reading, the boy speaks up again.
“sorry to interrupt but, you’re reading that for a class?” he asks. for some reason, i take a look at the front cover of my romance novel before talking.
“oh. no. i’m reading this for fun.” i tell him. my voice is quite, my tone soft.
“oh okay. i guess i just assumed you were here to study since everyone else is.” he lets out a breathy chuckle as he shrugs.
“no.” i shake my head before explaining- “i’m here to get away from my dorm-mate and her friends. they’re too loud for me to focus and they keep trying to get me to weigh in on their debates.”
“what are they debating?” he asks.
“well, when i left it was which Wolverines hockey player has the cutest smile.” i tell him, rolling my eyes.
“and who did you say?” he seems curious, and almost amused.
“no one.” i shrug. “i don’t know what any of them look like.”
he lets out a quiet laugh.
“well you know what one of them looks like now.” he says. my brows form a v and i’m about to ask him to clarify but then it hits me. oh. he’s a hockey player.
“oh.” is my awkward response.
“i’m Luke Hughes.” he smiles at me. well, i have my answer for the next debate now.
“i’m y/n.” i tell him. “nice to meet you.”
“you too.” he finally looks back down at his textbook, and i’m relieved to be free of any more small talk.
the next hour or so passes by silently, and i manage to finish the last 75 pages of my book without any interruptions. i close my book, and put my stuff back in my tote bag, at the same time that an alarm goes off on Luke’s phone. he turns it off and starts packing his stuff up as well. we stand simultaneously, and he sends me a quick amused expression. my steps to the exit are slow, and Luke falls in line with me, slowing his steps to match mine.
“my frat is having a party on Friday, you should come. collect some more data for the next debate.” he smirks, and i rack my brain for a nice way to say that i don’t do parties.
“i’m not really a party person.” i say.
“then what kind of person are you?” he asks. his eyes fall down my body before he looks back up to my face.
“um, the reading type, i guess? i don’t really like doing the whole people thing.” i confess. he nods in understanding.
“well, if you change your mind, come. and if you need to escape your dorm again, i’ll be here tomorrow, same time.” he winks before splitting off, walking the opposite direction as me.
my entire walk to my dorm, i rethink every word we shared, wondering if i sounded stupid. i mean, i would assume not because he didn’t seem put off by me, but who knows, maybe he’s just a good actor. he was really cute though, gosh i hope i didn’t unknowingly embarrass myself.
opening the door to my dorm, i’m disappointed to see that Alex and her friends are still here. they don’t usually hang out this long on a wednesday evening. and i have to hold back an eye roll when i realize that it doesn’t sound they’ve changed their topic of conversation at all since i’ve left. logically, i’m sure it has and they just circled back onto this topic, but i honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it was all they were talking about the past couple hours.
“y/n! you didn’t answer before you left, so please, settle this for us!” one of them, Jess, says as she spots me. “which UMich hockey player has the best smile? i say Ethan Edwards, Alex says Rutger McGroarty, and Becca says Mark Estapa!”
my mind wanders back to the boy i was conversing with not too long ago and before i can think twice, i blurt out- “Luke Hughes.”
“you think so?” Becca asks “i feel like he rarely ever smiles. it’s so hard to get one out of him.”
“really?” i ask. they must be exaggerating, he smiled at me earlier. although, i think he was just being friendly.
“yeah! i have a class with him this semester and i swear he frowned at me when i tried to introduce myself. i mean, he’s still hot, but still.” Becca replies, shrugging.
“oh.” i say. what does that mean? if he wasn’t friendly to her when they met, then why would he smile and be friendly with me?
“oooh y/n is blushing! i think she likes him!” Alex coos.
“i don’t like him.” i turn away, letting my hair fall in front of me to hide my apparently pink cheeks. i set my tote bag on my desk chair and slip my shoes off before taking a seat on my bed.
“i think she does!” Jess joins in on the teasing, and now i’m regretting having left the solitude of the library. “a bit of an odd match, you two.”
i’m not sure whether i should be offended by her statement or not, but for some reason i am. i don’t plan on dating him, but hearing her say we wouldn’t match together makes me feel insulted.
“what is that supposed to mean?” i retort.
“she didn’t mean anything by it.” Alex defends her friend. “she’s just saying, Luke is an extrovert, he likes to party and let loose, he has a lot of friends. and you’re… the opposite. i don’t think i’ve seen you go out once in the entire school year that we’ve shared a room. you keep to yourself. like, we’ve been trying to include you so that you’re not lonely, but you always say you’re going to the library. you and Luke just don’t seem like you’d fit together.”
“i didn’t ask you to include me. i like being alone. people are draining.” i say. i don’t like their pity on me. it’s not like i don’t have friends. i do. we’re just all introverted and our hangouts between classes is enough social interaction for us. we don’t care for going out partying on weekends or anything. if we do want to hang out on the weekend, we’ll usually do a movie night at Casey and Ellie’s apartment. but the way Alex explains it makes my life sound pitiful, and it makes me defensive, so before i can stop myself, i speak again. “and for your information, i’m going to a party on friday.”
the trio gasps, as though this information is scandalous.
“oh my god, are you going the party at Hockey House?” Becca asks. ‘hockey house’, the nickname for the frat house in which most of the UMich hockey players live. the frat is comprised solely of hockey players, so i guess the nickname makes sense. “for Luke?”
“yes, i’m going to the party. but no, not for Luke.” i tell them. why did i say i was going to that party? i hate parties. i even already told Luke so.
**
friday evening has come, and i can’t even back out of going to the party because Alex, Becca, and Jess have decided we should carpool together. so now i’m stuck in this commitment.
when Becca and Jess arrive to pick Alex and i up, i become aware that i’m the only one not wearing a dress or skirt of some kind. instead i’m dressed casual, in jeans and a tank top, paired with an oversized cardigan to keep me protected from the evening breeze. but it’s too late to change now.
arriving to the party is a hassle on its own, with the girls fussing over whether they look good enough to bag a hockey player, and having a hard time finding a parking spot. and when we finally walk into the party, i immediately want to leave. music is blasting from multiple speakers, everyone is holding a stereotypical red solo cup, and the house is packed. i’m quickly forgotten about by the other girls, them walking off to get drinks and stop to have conversations with a few of the hockey guys. i still don’t actually know any of the players names, besides Luke.
i scan the room, but i’m not entirely sure what i’m looking for. or who. all my friends are probably laying in bed right now. before i can even figure out who i’m looking for, i hear my name being called.
“y/n!” i turn my head towards the voice and find a guy from my ‘intro to business’ class coming towards me. i think his name is Dylan, but it seems like everyone just calls him Duke. “never seen you at a party before!”
“yeah, it’s not usually my scene.” i tell him with an awkward smile.
“i figured. you give me more of the ‘reading in my room’ vibes.” he laughs.
“am i that obvious?” i joke. he laughs again and nods.
“you look pretty out of place. let me introduce you to some of my friends.” he takes ahold of my wrist and pulls me towards a group of guys in the kitchen. i’m immediately uncomfortable, they all seem intimidating, and i’m not great around boys. we get closer to the group and Duke begins to introduce me. “guys, this is-”
“y/n! you came!” i look over to see Luke, and i can’t help the smile that breaks out on my face when i see his wide grin. he slings an arm around my shoulders, and Duke’s jaw drops.
“THIS is the y/n you’ve been talking about? the one from the library?” Duke asks. i can feel my face heating up. he’s been talking about me? i hope he’s not saying anything bad about me.
“yup. this is my future girlfriend.” Luke exclaims, and i choke on my own spit.
what?! we barely know anything about each other! all i know is his name is Luke, he has the prettiest smile i’ve ever seen, and he plays hockey. pretty sure all he knows about me is my name and that i have an annoying roommate.
“hm. an odd match.” Duke ponders. there’s that phrase again! but now seeing Luke in his natural habitat, partying and joking with friends, and even just him being so confident, i can’t help but wonder if Duke and the girls are right. Luke and i do seem to contrast each other.
“what’s that supposed to mean?” Luke asks defensively.
“hey, i’m not saying that’s a bad thing!” Duke rebuts. “you guys are just kinda… opposites of each other.”
“opposites attract.” Luke shrugs. i’m kind of confused. does my opinion matter? Luke seems pretty confident that i like him back.
“uh, Luke.” i speak up. he looks down at me where i’m still tucked into his side. “we don’t really know anything about each other.”
“when you know, you know.” he shrugs.
**5 YEARS LATER**
i stare up at my now husband from my seat beside him with watery eyes and a soft smile.
“and i told her, ‘when you know, you know.’” he looks back down at me from his standing position. “and i knew. from the first time we met, i knew this would be the girl i spend the rest of my life with.”
everyone in the reception hall claps as Luke ends his speech. he gives me a soft kiss on the cheek before whispering in my ear.
“you got this, baby.” his hand clasps my shaky one and gives it a quick tight squeeze. i take one big deep breath and stand up, i hate public speaking, but i wrote my speech and i will read it.
“i didn’t know. well, at least not as quick as Luke.” a few people chuckle at that. “but what i do know, is that i went to my first party for him. which spoke volumes for me. and i thought he had the most amazing smile to ever exist.”
i look down at Luke and see the grin spread across his face.
“look, there it is!” i point to him as i look back at the reception hall full of our friends and family and everyone laughs. “i still think it’s the best smile, but i might be biased now. when we started dating, we had people calling us an odd match, i even had a friend compare us to ‘snow on the beach.’ she said we were ‘weird but beautiful.’”
“i used to think it was an insult, but now i look back and realize, our friends were right, we are an odd match.” i look back at Luke and now it’s my turn to smile. he takes ahold of my hand, squeezing it as a few tears roll down my cheeks. i finish my speech while maintaining eye contact with him. “but i like our differences, we balance each other out, and i can’t imagine what my life would be like if i hadn’t liked your confidence so much that night. i’m so grateful that i get to spend the rest of my life calling myself your wife.”
Luke stands, winding his arms around my waist and pulling me in for a sweet, slow kiss. i can hear everyone clapping, and someone lets out a loud “WOOO!”
i can distinctly tell that was Jack, and it makes me interrupt the kiss with a giggle. Luke just takes that chance to pull back and pepper my face in pecks. blood rushes to my face at the thought of our family and friends watching him do this, but he doesn’t care. his confidence is a constant, no room for embarrassment.
yeah, maybe my friend was right; Luke and i are like snow on the beach. at first glance, we’re an unlikely duo, different in a lot of ways, but we make a great couple and our love is beautiful.

MAROON — JACK HUGHES
jack hughes x fem!reader
part of the Midnights Fic List
summary: in which y/n and her best friend, Jack, get drunk on cheap wine and finally confess their feelings in her New York apartment.
specific lyrics: “‘how’d we end up on the floor anyway?’ you say, ‘your roommate’s cheap-ass screw top rosé, that’s how.’” and “the burgundy on my t-shirt when you splashed your wine into me and how the blood rushed into my cheeks” and “i chose you, the one i was dancing with in New York..”
warnings: light profanity, alcohol
notes: i’ve been so excited to write this one. if you guys can’t tell from my other fics, best friends to lovers is my favorite trope so this one was so fun for me to write!
i’ve known the Hughes family my entire life. with my mom and Ellen Hughes being best friends from playing hockey together, i grew up spending my summers at the Hughes lake house and visiting whenever possible. so, of course, i grew close to the three brothers.
Quinn, the oldest, is three years older than me. growing up he was always like the annoying, protective older brother i never had, and he still is.
Luke, the youngest, is a year younger than me. he’s my buddy, the one i go to when i need something set straight for me, and the only guy i know that would sit in his bedroom and miss a party at his own house just so he could comfort me over the phone.
and lastly, Jack. a year older than me, and my best friend since i was born, i guess. my mom and Ellen have always said that as soon as i was born, it was like Jack knew we were meant to be best friends. they claim that when i was a baby and he was one, he would cry until they put him in my crib with me, in which case they swear that it would instantly put a smile on my face. but no matter if those stories are true or not, we have indeed been best friends since diapers.
Jack and i’s friendship has always been different than the ones i have with his brothers, especially when i turned thirteen and started really paying attention to guys. that was the fateful year that Jack graduated from not only being my best friend but also my biggest crush. i started noticing not only how cute he really is, but how sweet he could be, and how comfortable i am with him.
which brings us to now, in my New York apartment, where i’m currently sat on the floor with the guy i’m head over heels in love with, sharing a bottle of wine. it’s the first week of the off-season and he had originally came over to help me pack for the annual lake house trip, but then my roommate popped her head in to ask if we wanted a couple bottles of rosé that she bought on sale. she was about to leave for the airport for her flight back home for the summer and couldn’t bring them with her. so Jack and i shared a quick glance and said yes, and now here we are.
i’m sat with my back against the coffee table, my feet in Jack’s lap.
“hey, do you remember that time- when uh- when Luke jumped into the lake from the rope swing, and just completely belly flopped?” Jack’s words were broken up between fits of laughter, and i burst out in laughter, as well, at the memory.
“oh my god yes! his entire chest and stomach were red!” it’s a wonder how we’ve yet to get a noise complaint from my neighbors by now. as our laughter dies down, Jack shifts around.
“my ass is numb from the hardwood.” he tells me, and the casual announcement makes me double over in laughter once more.
“how’d we end up on the floor, anyway?” i wonder out loud.
“your roommates cheap-ass screw top rosé, that’s how!” he exclaims through giggles. i don’t laugh with him, instead i stay silent, studying him. he’s so beautiful.
Jack stands from the floor, letting my feet roll of his lap and land with a thump. grabbing the empty wine bottle and our glasses from the coffee table, he goes into the kitchen. i watch him as he grabs my bottle of red wine from the fridge, refilling our glasses before walking back to me. he bends down to hand me my glass, but in his inebriated state, he doesn’t pay attention to his own glass in his hand and his wine splashes onto my white t-shirt. the burgundy liquid staining and leaving the shirt slightly see through, clinging to my braless chest.
“oh shit, sorry y/n/n!” his eyes go wide and he stares at my chest. logically, i know he’s just looking at the stain and not my breasts, but blood rushes into my cheeks at the thought of him eyeing my chest.
“it’s fine!” i wave it off, as i stand to go change. “i’ll be right back.”
i go into my bedroom and ruffle through the shirts that i don’t have packed for the summer, picking out an old USA Hockey shirt of Jack’s.
i step back out into the living room to find Jack had put on one of my vinyl’s, i watch as he dances around my living room to the sound of Photograph by Ed Sheeran. a smile breaks across my face as he just spins around the room. finally spotting me, he walks over and holds his hand out.
“dance with me, belle.” my heart flutters at his use of the nickname he started calling me in high school. he never explained why he started calling me ‘belle’, all i know is that one day when i had met him after his french class and my spanish class, he said he had a new nickname for me, and he’s called me ‘belle’ ever since. usually the nickname seems to be reserved for special moments or when it’s just the two of us.
i slip my hand in his, allowing him to pull me closer. his hands take hold of my arms, sliding them up onto his shoulders, and he wraps his arms around my waist, swaying us around the living room. he gazes down at me, a soft smile on his face and an unreadable emotion present in his eyes.
“hi.” his voice is barely a whisper.
“hi.” i reply in the same low volume. his eyes flicker over my face and his cheeks turn pink. making me ask- “what are you thinking?”
“i’m thinking that i’ve wanted to be in this position since high school.” his words confuse me. but my heart speeds up, as if it knows what he means before my brain does.
“dancing?” i laugh halfheartedly.
“you in my arms. just the two of us.” he clarifies and i can feel myself blush for the second time tonight.
“if you wanted me to yourself, you could’ve just asked.” i joke.
“i don’t just want you to myself.” he whispers. “i want you to be mine.”
his reply causes me to stumble a step, and my heart feels like it might beat out of my chest.
“don’t say things you don’t mean, Jack.” i tell him. suddenly, i feel insecure and afraid. i’ve never felt this way with him. other guys, sure. but never him.
“why would you think i don’t mean what i’m saying?” he stops our dancing and i only just realize that the song has changed. my arms slip off his shoulders, dropping back down to my sides, but his hands never leave my hips. “y/n, do you think i would say something like that if i don’t mean it?”
“i don’t know.” i mumble, shrugging my shoulders. he brings a hand up to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, before letting it fall back down to my hip.
“i’ve been in love with you since high school, y/n/n. i thought by now you would’ve caught on, but i guess that’s on me because you always have been pretty oblivious when it comes to flirting.” he laughs.
“wait, what?” i ask. please don’t be messing with me. please be telling the truth.
“did you really not know? look if this is too much, if you don’t like me like that, then just tell me. straight out. because i don’t want to compromise our friendship with this confession. we can just forget it ever happened.” that sobers me up real quickly.
“wait, no, hold on. i never said i didn’t like you.” i rebut.
“what are you saying?” by the smirk on his face, i know he knows what i’m saying, but i take a deep breath and clarify anyways.
“jack, i’ve liked you since i was thirteen.” i confess. “i didn’t think you thought of me as anything more than your annoying best friend though.”
“y/n, i literally gave you a nickname that translates to ‘beautiful’ and you thought i was looking at you like ‘oh yeah that’s my best friend, she’s so annoying’?” he asks.
“what? is that what that means?” my tone is incredulous. i assumed he was calling me ‘belle’ like princess belle because i like to read.
“oh my god, you really had no idea? i literally gave you that nickname after we learned the word in french class. you were the first thing that popped in my head when we learned it.”
i can’t take any more talking. Jack starts to say something else but i cut him off by pressing my lips against his. it doesn’t take him more than a second to start kissing back, his lips locking with mine.
i pull back, breathless and anxious, but the smile Jack wears eases my nerves.
“so you like me, huh?” he jokes.
“oh shut up.” i roll my eyes, giving his shoulder a playful shoulder.
**BONUS SCENE**
we’ve been at the lake house for three days and so far, no one has even noticed that Jack and i are officially dating. have we really always been this touchy?
Jack and i have made a game out of it, guessing who the first person to notice will be. he says Ellen or my mom, but i say Quinn or Luke. we both know our dads don’t pay enough attention to catch onto anything.
i walk down the stairs, prepared to grab a snack before us ‘kids’ head out on the boat. Ellen and my mom sit in the kitchen talking, but go silent as soon as i walk in.
“heyyy.” i drag out, eyeing them suspiciously.
“hi, honey.” Ellen gives me a kiss on the forehead as i stop in front of them.
“what were you two talking about?” i ask.
“nothing.” they say in unison, shaking their heads.
“i believe you, not at all.” i joke, opening a cupboard to grab a granola bar. “what was it?”
“they were talking about you and Jack.” Luke says, walking out from the walk-in pantry. “mom was saying she thinks they should set you guys up on a blind date with each other.”
“Luke Warren Hughes! how long have you been in there?!” Ellen scolds, not even bothering to deny his claims.
“i was looking for something to eat, you’re the ones who came in gossiping.” he shrugs. before Ellen can refute, Jack walks in from the same way i came. wrapping an arm around my shoulders, he stops next to me.
“what are you guys talking about?” Jack asks.
“our moms wanted to set us up on a blind date.” i say, a sly smile on my lips as i look up at him.
Jack lets out a chuckle before directing his gaze to his mom.
“sorry, no can do mom. i’ve got a girlfriend.” he smiles, and i have to bite back a grin. it’s the first time he’s called me his girlfriend. i like it.
“you what?!” Ellen exclaims. “why have i not met her? or even heard about her?”
“it’s a recent development.” Jack shrugs. “anyways, i’m gonna steal y/n/n here. Quinn is waiting for us at the boat. Luke, c’mon.”
before i can even think to take a step, Jack sweeps my feet off the ground, throwing me over his shoulder and walking away. i smack at his back with my free hand while one still clutches my granola bar.
“Jack Rowden Hughes, put me down! right now!” he barks out a laugh and i can feel his neck shift against me like he’s moving his head around before he lands a smack against my ass. “HEY!”
he ignores my struggles, walking down to the dock, all the way to the boat before finally setting me down.
“i can walk. i have legs.” i laugh.
“i know, but i wanted to carry you.” he grins down at me. i scan the dock for Quinn, but with no sight of him i relax.
“you just wanted an excuse to stare at my ass.” i joke. Jack hooks his fingers through the front belt loops on my shorts, tugging me closer so that i’m pressed up against him.
“and is that a crime?” he asks. i smile up at him, sending one last glance toward the house over his shoulder, not seeing Quinn or Luke. i lean up, planting a kiss on his lips.
“what the fuck?!!” the exclamation comes from behind me and i pull back, spinning around quickly to find Quinn stood on the boat. he’s leaned over the side, starting at Jack and i with a dropped jaw.
“oh- hi, Quinny.” i smile, painting on a face of innocence. Quinn’s eyes dart between me and Jack.
“when the hell did this happen?” he asks. “i knew i never should’ve let you move to New York. he’s corrupted you. i should’ve insisted you moved to Vancouver, but no, i said ‘if New York is where she wants to be, i won’t push.’ i should’ve pushed.”
i look over to Jack, sharing an amused smile with my boyfriend as his brother rambles on.
“Quinn.” i interrupt. he stops, throwing me a raised brow before giving a side eye to his younger brother. “did you really think this wouldn’t happen eventually?”
he sighs, before nodding.
“i know. i expected this. i prepared for this.” it’s my turn to quirk a brow now.
“you prepared for this?” i ask. he nods and hops onto the dock.
“okay, it’s time for us to talk. Jack, y/n, when a man and a woman love each other very much, sometimes-”
“oH MY GOD.” i shout. plugging my fingers in my ears. “la la la la la i can’t hear you! i am not currently getting the sex talk from my boyfriends older brother! la la la la la.”
Quinn’s face lights up and he burst out in laughter. i take my fingers out of my ears, eyeing him.
“oh, that was good! you should’ve seen your faces!” he laughs. i turn to look at Jack, who still wears a disgusted grimace. i pat his chest and let out a sigh. “seriously, i’ll be right back though.”
Quinn takes off in a jog towards the lake house, but before he disappears inside, i hear him yell.
“MOM! YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW!”
Jack finally unfreezes from his state of disgust. pulling out his wallet and handing me a twenty dollar bill.
“you won.”

you were exhausted.
you loved your class, but after spending six hours with them, you were beyond exhausted. it was a rainy day, so there’d been an indoor recess and lunch, which took away the only reprieve you had from them during the day.
running on very little sleep, and lots of coffee, you barely managed to make it back home without falling asleep.
you sighed in relief as you took your shoes off, massaging your heels.
“nico, i’m home!” you called out, unsure if your boyfriend could even hear you.
it was a rare day off for him, and he was probably spending it playing some video games with the boys, or reading. you climbed up the stairs to your bedroom, changing into a pair of sweats and one of nico’s t-shirts.
jumping onto the couch, you smiled lightly to yourself. sure, it’d been a long and tiring day, but the kids were cute. you were glad to be able to make even a small difference in their lives.
“hi honey,” nico kissed the top of your head. “when’d you get home?”
“like ten minutes ago,” you yawned. “i called out for you, but i don’t think you heard me.”
“i was finishing off my book,” he told you, lifting your feet and placing them in his lap. “so, how was your day? you look tired.”
“because i am tired,” you told him. “it was a rain-day, so there was indoor recess and lunch. and on top of that, it’s day four, which is the day i teach them the entire day. so basically, i was running around from nine am, until three pm, making sure these little rugrats were still alive.” you sighed, “i love them.”
nico laughed lightly, massaging your legs, “sounds like an eventful day. why don’t you take a nap? you look like you could use one.”
“that’s a weird way to tell your girlfriend she looks pretty,” you muttered, your sentence cut off by a yawn.
"you always look pretty, that's a given at this point." nico smiled, kissing the top of your head, “go to sleep, love.”
“okay, fine,” you mumbled, already half asleep.
-
you woke up to music playing softly.
stretching out on your bed, you smiled at nico who was at your bedroom door.
“oh, did i wake you?” he asked, coming towards you.
“nah,” you shook your head. you looked around your bedroom, “did you carry me in here?”
“didn’t want you to hurt even more from sleeping weirdly on the couch,” he answered, shrugging slightly. “come on now. i’ve got a bath drawn and ready, and i even made a quick run to restock on your favourite body wash.”
you followed nico to the washroom, smiling to yourself at the sight. it wasn’t anything big, but the fact that he’d done it for you made your pain fade.
“i could marry you right now,” you muttered, sniffing your body wash.
nico froze momentarily at the door, wondering if you’d found the ring he’d hidden in the shoebox in the closet. he knew it was a horrible hiding spot.
“like seriously, this is amazing,” you continued, oblivious to your boyfriend’s internal crisis. “you always find some way to make me fall more in love with you.”
nico smiled lightly, his breathing coming a little easier as he began to realise it was a spur of the moment comment.
soon, he thought of the ring. soon.
