Thank you so much! Speaking of colors, I enjoy working with it a lot and I'm gonna go on a little mini tangent.

Here is a piece I worked on recently. The characters colors were black, brown and red. To make everything cohesive I need to make sure all the colors match a scheme. I picked a very simple red to green contrasting/complimentary color scheme. Lots of people talk about green not matching with red, as they feel it has Christmas vibes. I think there are solutions though; making sure that the more commonly appearing color (green) is dull and understated helps a lot. also making it not actually green helps a lot too LOL.

I’ve decided to make this account reblogs only just because I feel like there are still people on this website that deserve to be seen. However, I’m not going to post any art of my own on Tumblr because the platform is actively giving AI companies people’s artwork without permission.

It’s official. I’m permanently stopping posts to this Tumblr account.

I hate that this is an opt-out thing. I’m horrified that Tumblr decided to give my art to AI companies. I’ve now lost my trust in this platform completely.

I’m not sure what happens next, to be honest. I moved to Tumblr last year to escape the mess that Twitter became, but I guess that was hopeful thinking. I have a Bluesky account, but to be honest Bluesky is still an unsafe place for me right now. The lack of tools to find and filter content easily is a complete deal breaker.

This is my final goodbye besties, at least from here. My carrd links to all the stuff I have so you’ll still see me somewhere in the world.

Hi, Tumblr. It’s Tumblr. We’re working on some things that we want to share with you. 

AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.

We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner. 

We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.

To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.

According to 404’s report, Automattic plans to launch a new setting Wednesday that will “allow users to opt-out of data sharing with third parties, including AI companies.” But it cites internal posts that suggest the company scraped an “initial data dump” containing “all Tumblr’s public post content between 2014 and 2023,” including — apparently by mistake — content that wouldn’t be publicly visible on blogs. It’s unclear what was done with this data and what data (if any) has been sent to Midjourney and OpenAI.

So, allegedly, it seems like content that wasn't public on blogs was shared to AI companies. If this is true, and we don't know if this is true, but if it is, that means that scheduled and private posts might have been shared without permission. For the next while, I guess, I'll stop posting my art here until I know what the actual hell is going on with this website. I'll keep updating about this whole mess, but I will refuse to upload images to this blog.

crap If this is true, I am going to have 0 platforms to post on because Twitter became a giant mess and Bluesky feels half functional and unsafe to use (for me) right now; other places on the internet aren't places that I want to post my stuff on. I really hope that this is false because I really don't want my art to be sold to train AI models.

What is this about the tumblr staff wanting to sell art data to midjourney?

An ex-colleague of mine mentioned yesterday that there may be contacts between Automattic and midjourney in that direction, but nothing is public yet and I don't have any more info. They probably won't have anything specific to share either, since they left the company weeks ago too. That being said:

I have no reason to doubt my ex-coworker word, they are a trustworthy person.

Tumblr's CEO has been absurdly enthusiastic (comically, even) about AI, and is a big fan of LLMs and 'AI' companies.

A deal with midjourney could solve tumblr financial issues (not the same company, but openAi is paying up to 5 million/year to news companies to use their content as training data... tumblr generates several orders of magnitude more content than any newspaper or any media company and it only would need a 20 to 30 million per year deal to be profitable)

So I don't have any extra info yet, but I'm keeping my ears open.
