Alana and Running: Now All Love
And a new PR at the Brooklyn Half!
A little over a year ago, I was sneaker shopping at JackRabbit with my roommate and I decided to sign up for the group run email newsletter. Being a newcomer to the city, I had high hopes of meeting some new people. The next time I checked my email, there in the JackRabbit Group Run newsletter was a large photo of 20 happy, smiling, sweaty runners. I knew instantly that I wanted to be involved. I've always had a love/hate relationship with running, but since joining the group runs, it has been all love! So much so that I happily completed the NYRR 9+1 qualifications in 2012 to run my first marathon - the 2013 NYC Marathon this November.
JackRabbit group runs have a very welcoming and open vibe. Not only is everything incredibly organized, but our leaders do an excellent job at chalking the route (they only made us run through Times Square in rush hour once), making sure we all stay together, and steering us away from oncoming traffic. The staff even keeps our valuables safe and hand deliver our bags to the ending bar while we enjoy ice cold pitchers of beer.
Some of my fondest Tuesday night memories over the past year have been: catching the perfect view during sunset on the Hudson, sharing Boston memories during our recent Boston Strong unity run, running to Rockefeller Center to see the tree at Christmas time, sprinting over the Brooklyn Bridge to catch Manhattanhedge in June, sighting (and missing) celebrities in Tribeca, and running with still wet nails because we thought we had time for manicures before 7. And most recently, I have the exciting memory of finishing the Brooklyn Half to see an entire team of friendly faces ready to take a photo for the next Jackrabbit Group Run newsletter.
