Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
Unit 3: Shakespearean Drama: October 30 - December 15 (7 weeks)
Reading: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. (In class reading can be done in the textbook.) For home reading and study, please download this pdf file:http://www.folgerdigitaltexts.org/download/pdf/Rom.pdf You can then read it on your computer, or add it to “iBooks” (or equivalent) to read on your tablet or phone.
Norms:
+ Initial days will present Shakespeare person and plays. It will also introduce story of R&J.
+ Each day students will pick a part to read and the class together will read an Act. Each student/character will have a name plate. When their character is on stage, they will display the name. When they leave, they will turn the name facing down. When the character first enters, they will stand up. Students can change character from day to day.
+ Teacher will read stage directions. During the reading, students may ask questions about meaning, and teacher will give short explanations.
+ After reading is over, teacher will give a few explanations of word play and/or references. Students will summarize actions of the play in their journals.
Project: In small groups, enact a scene from Romeo and Juliet.
Reading Schedule and Due-Dates:
October 30-Nov 1: Introduction to Shakespeare and his plays. Read Prologue of R&J. Discuss and journal about background knowledge of R&J. Introduce Unit Project of group scene acting. Introduce play-reading norms. Activity: try to “translate” a monologue or dialogue from Shakespeare to modern English.
November 8-10: Begin class-reading of Act I. Quiz on Shakespearean English (Wednesday).
November 13-15-17: Continue play reading in class (Act I and II). Act I comprehension quiz (Monday). Reading Response to Act I and II (Friday).
November 20-22: Continue play reading in class (Act II-III). Act II comprehension quiz (Monday).
November 27-29: Continue play reading in class (Act III-IV). Character foil study due (Monday). Start working in groups on acting project
December 4-6-8: Continue play reading in class (Act IV-V). Act III-IV comprehension quiz (Monday). Compare and contrast productions of R&J (Friday). Work in groups on acting project.
December 11-13-15: Finish reading (if necessary) Act V. Act V comprehension quiz. Watch movie version of R&J. Present group enactments of R&J scenes.
