Secret Samaritan (Bucky x Reader)

WARNINGS: Blood and injuries. 

SUMMARY: For @myfinalbraincell who requested - Bucky x reader where she helps out the team on missions without their knowledge. Bucky could be the only one to notice when bullets don’t hit their mark and targets are taken out by what seems like nothing. Perhaps he decides to investigate further and finds her injured and needing help after a rougher mission?

You huffed, taking the stairs two at a time.

You made it into the room with 90 seconds until targets arrived on the scene and got to work. Dropping your case on the table you clicked it open and pulled out the clear plastic looking film and peeled it from its backing, carefully smoothing it over the street facing window.

Now you could strip naked and do the macarena in front of the window if you wanted and nobody on the street would see a damn thing. Not that you had time for that. The film you’d used was one sided, meaning anyone on the other side of the glass would see nothing but an empty room but your view was unobstructed.

The alarm clock started ringing, alerting you that it was that time in the morning, the time for your run. You’ve always been an early riser, you have too much energy to stay asleep for too long- you blame it on your abilities, but you’ve always been this way, even before you got your speed.

You were what some people say, a speedster- someone who is able to run at speeds a normal human couldn’t and you could even run as fast as sound travels. Crazy, right? Well anyways you figured that letting people know wouldn’t do you any good considering the stigma against mutants, so you woke up at 4 every morning just to get the excitement of running without the fear of someone seeing you. 

Life without telling anyone your true ability was hard, the loneliness often kept you up at night, but you managed to find a smile and work through every day with a positive attitude. You would often time yourself running, trying to break your previous times every day- because there was one thing that you loved- the rush of competition and the thrill of winning.

Breathing in the fresh air you made it down to the park where you usually run, it made the perfect spot because no one was there that early and you got the chance to see the sunrise. But when you got to the park, you noticed you weren’t alone. Three men were jogging around the path, one further behind than the other two.

You huffed to yourself as you realized you couldn’t run like you usually do, you would have to run like a ‘normal person’- which is the one thing you really did not want to do. Seeing as there was no other option, you set down your water on a nearby bench and started slowly jogging to get warmed up.

As you were moving at a turtles pace (well, according to you at least) you noticed that two of the men were faster than people usually are, and they were about to come and pass you.

And that’s when you heard it.

“On your left” the two men said in unison, as they went around the side of you to keep running. How were they going that fast? And more importantly why did they have to pass you? Oh that made you upset- you were never the slow one that people had to pass.

Just as you were thinking about how to run faster without getting any unwanted attention, you realized something. The two men were avengers for crying out loud. It was Steve ‘captain America’ Rogers and James ‘bucky’ barnes. You smirked to yourself as you realized you could show off, at least a little bit. But only because they are used to being around people with abilities, and it would be nice to be impressed at least a little.

You slowed down and waited for the guys to loop back around so you could talk to them, in the meantime you saw another man slow down and sit on a bench behind you.

“Hey, what are doing out here so early?” He asked, still trying to catch his breath. You recognized him as Sam Wilson, the falcon.

You chucked, “I could ask you the same thing- but I usually come out this early because no one else is awake yet, but clearly I’m wrong”

“Yeah I get that, the only reason I’m out here is because these two fools want me to run with them, but then they go ahead and leave me in the dust, it’s just not cool” he says as he looks over at his friends still running. “I’m Sam by the way”

You shake his extended hand, “Y/n, and by the looks of it your friends over there are Steve and bucky?”

“Yup” he says, popping the ‘p’. “It’s kinda hard going anywhere without having people know who you are- well especially with those two”

You were about to respond when Steve and Bucky slow down and walk over to where you are. They make the same comment Sam did about you being out at this time of day, again you laugh and tell them this is your usual routine- and that they are actually the only people you’ve seen out at this time. You can feel your legs itching to run when an idea comes to your mind. Hey, these guys are super soldiers- they probably run fast... and they are used to competing against each other to see who’s the best... would they be up for a little challenge?

“So I guess you could say that you guys run pretty fast, huh?” You ask, already setting them up so you could race them.

They look at eachother, chuckle a little, and nod their heads, “yeah I guess so” bucky says. You could already feel a smile growing on your face as you anticipated running, “In that case, would you be up for a bet?” you asked almost innocently, not letting on that you could easily out run them. 

When they agreed you said your idea of a ‘fair’ bet. “The bet is if I can run five laps faster than both of you, you buy me lunch... and if either of you win- well you can come up with something”

Both Bucky and Steve were worried about racing you, they didn’t want to totally crush you and make you feel bad about your running, but they also didn’t want to make it super obvious that they were letting you win. Steve was the first one to say something, “well in that case, we’ll think of something when we win” he winked, and you blushed and smiled even more. 

“Okay, you ready boys? oh and Sam do you want to watch to see who comes first?” Sam nodded and you asked him to start the three of you.

“ready.. set.. and go!” you all began at a steady jog, and it was up to you to decide when to start running for real. You could tell they were both holding back, and in order to have a proper competition you picked up your pace a bit. 

You started to go faster and pull ahead of the guys a bit and you turned around and started to run backwards, “you didn’t think this would be easy now, would you?” you smirked as you saw the moment of realization on their faces that you could run, and fast. 

you turned back around and decided to show them how fast you could really run. You felt the wind whipping through your hair as you went faster and faster, one lap down, two laps, three. It was only a few seconds later that you finished all five laps and slowed down and stood by Sam, whose mouth was open like a fish out of water. 

Steve and Bucky neglected the rest of their laps and ran over to the two of you, looking simultaneously impressed and confused.”wha… how... fast?” Bucky said in between breaths. 

you laughed and replied to him, explaining how you just crushed them and won the bet, “Well, long story short I’m have powers which basically consist of running really, really fast. and that’s the reason I’m out here so early, no ones here to see me run, cause if they did they would probably be pretty spooked.”

“Have you ever thought about using your abilities for good, or you know, going to the avengers or even being an agent of shield?” Steve asks, and you realized that you should’ve seen this question coming. you decided in between telling them the truth or dodging the question. you decided on the latter.

“Well I think the more important question here is, where are we going to breakfast- oh! maybe a really nice place, since you guys are paying” You grabbed your stuff and motioned for them to start walking with you to a café a few blocks away. While you were planning of having a nice breakfast, Steve and Bucky were plotting on how to get you to train for the avengers, because they were convinced the team needed someone like you.
