Yes, Merlin is morally gray and definitely had horrible decisions but she’s not the most evil being to walk the universe like some people paint her to be.
Listen, I’m not denying Merlin is selfish but why does the whole fandom keep ignoring the fact that she genuinely loves knowledge to the point of obsession (stopping her own time so there would be no limit for her to continue exploring knowledge) and reduce her whole motive to just “being unable to handle a rejection”? Ok, she had a crush on Meliodas (puppy love typa thing let’s be honest) and since she also loves/cannot hate Elizabeth (and this proves she doesn’t have a love brain like y’all want her to), she chose to immerse herself in knowledge, a healthy coping mechanism if ya ask me. Then she found out about chaos and started looking into it. By the point the events in the manga happened, she had already invested 3000 years into uncovering chaos. Now imagine you start a passion project that grows way out of hand, and you have spent too many years to just quit and not get the results. This is what Merlin meant when she said “too late” in my opinion (partly this and partly that she wished she had had someone like Escanor 3000 years ago when she was so hungry for dedicated affection). Merlin is the sin of Gluttony for a reason. Greed is wanting more; gluttony is overconsuming, overindulgence to the point of self destruction. Her actions are always one part cold pragmatism and one part sentimental. It’s cold when she said Escanor was an intriguing test subject. But then she did an incredibly sentimental thing by giving him a kiss, scarring herself permanently as a memorial to him so Escanor is carved into her very skin and she would always remember him whilst people jeered at her for “wasting a pretty face”.
Now onto the next part that I think people are too hard on her for, just slow down and put yourself in Merlin’s shoes. So she helped this guy, and she looked like the only female figure who has ever shown him kindness. Wouldn’t Merlin think she might just be an alive version of Rosa to him? Escanor was probably aware of this, which is why he said “I have always loved you. And I know it's not only because you remind me so much of Rosa”. And seeing how many of y’all keep refusing that it’s Merlin who was with Escanor in chapter 192 but Rosa instead (which is dumb bc only Merlin has that mole and the Japanese text literally says “Merlin”) shows how real this concern is. I love Escalin and I think they should get married, but she is not inclined to return his feelings.

Yes, Escanor wrote many many many poems dedicated to her, and all of the words show how much he worshiped her. But this is bad, because then Merlin wouldn’t think he genuinely loves her (until his confession I reckon, you could see the surprise in her eyes when she realized just how forgiving his love is) and that he was probably mistaking savior worshiping for love. Just look at how Escanor described Merlin, sounds a bit too perfect and um well not exactly accurate:

Her being kind is debatable I guess since she was kinda always nice to him (which proves she did care about him btw)

But cheerful?? Does this mean Merlin smile more in front of Escanor?
It’s a shame really. I wonder what could have gone differently if Escanor had confessed his deep feelings for her sooner, maybe even back when they weren’t wanted criminals yet. Maybe he wouldn’t have become collateral damage to her plans. I hate how the anime portrayed their farewell kiss, the manga did it so much better. I’m not a big fan of how emotionless she is in the anime compared to the melancholy and the sinking realization that she couldn’t back down anymore. How her eyes looked so sad in the manga but the anime missed the mark completely.

Another harsh assumption is that Merlin tried to kill Elizabeth. No, she can teleport Elizabeth quick enough there won’t be a scrape. Reactivating her curse sounds extreme but even if Merlin hadn’t done it, Elizabeth would probably still encounter some near-death experience in purgatory and that would reactive her curse too (still don’t really get how this works as some said Merlin needs to have the power equivalent to a god to reactivate her curse? But personally I think Merlin managed to do it because the demon king isn’t dead yet). And also the curse required Meliodas to “watch” her die so technically since he wasn’t watching, Elizabeth wouldn’t die.
Anyway, Merlin is selfish and I still love her. God forbid a woman has hobbies (literally lol).
Ya know in retrospect, Merlin bringing Escanor back is a perfect example of her gluttonous side where she doesn’t want to lose the very person who loves her unconditionally despite everything.

the demon gowther? dead? oh, no no no. you see when the spell lifted off mael/estarossa gowthers life force returned to him.
he's been living a humble, anonymous life in the suburbs of Liones. far away enough so the 4 (5 if you're including Elizabeth) people that would recognise him don't come across him, but close enough so he can keep an eye on them. he's good friends with hendrikson, gowther buys from him and vice versa.
When he returned, it was in the body of his young adult self. so he uses a cane to move around, though he could easily heal himself if he wanted to. he just prefers not to so it would stop him from fighting even if he is tempted to go against his pacifist ways.

7DS Headcanon
as a kid, Arthur was very aware. by that I mean he was one of those kids that were always on about their 'imaginary friends', but they were actually there. as ghosts.
everybody always said he was lying when he told them that he wasn't imagining it, and there was actually someone standing in the corner. but he didn't care. he quite liked being the only one who could see them. made him feel like he had a magical power, like everyone else.
his favorite ghost was a man. he liked him becuse he confused him. half his face looked no older than 35, youthful and graceful, and long black hair that reaches just past his shoudler.
Kind of like merlin
the other side faded into wrinkles and thin grey hairs, though his eyes stayed the same on both sides. golden yellow that was shiny in the sun.
Kind of like merlin
the man was shocked when the small ginger boy first spoke to him. partly because he was dead, and this kid isn't supposed to be able to see him, but also because he knew he looked hideous and thought even if a kid could see him he'd scare them off.
but this kid with his big purple eyes was full of curiosity. asking how his face got like that, who carved the owl on the end of the staff he always had with him, and if he knew merlin.
merlin
Arthur would tell the strange man how merlin was a nice lady that taught him and showed him stuff. how she would tell him stories of her unnamed home and the magic that was there.
the man stared at Arthur and asked him to show him merlin.
and it was definitely her. she was definitely his daughter.
The strange man always stuck around. looked after Arthur when merlin wasn't there. told him stories about places Arthur had never heard of before, like Belialuin and Purgatory. the man had told him he was the chief of Belialuin back when he was alive. Arthur was more than impressed.
the man was always there watching over Arthur until he slept, looking after him, holding onto his hand as he jumped across a body of water and making sure he didn't fall down from a tree. then when the ginger mop of head fell asleep he'd watch over merlin, who couldn't see him, but he was sure she could feel his presence, even if it was just the tiniest bit.
once Arthur became king, the strange man said he'd have to go. without a doubt, Arthur was upset. he was 14 now, and this strange half-young-half-old man was the only ghost he could see. but he knew he couldn't stop him. and he lived never seeing the man again.
now he was in merlins perfect cube, merlin herself fighting galand, a demon covered in red armour, and why was he calling merlin daughter of Belialuin?

I feel so bad for nanashi
the poor thing was banished by his race and had his wings torn out over something he didn't do. he lived thousands of years thinking that he had failed mael and was unable to protect him from death as his teacher. gowther switching people's memorise had indirectly caused most of nanashi's suffering. not that it's his fault, though I'm sure even if he knew how it would effect nanashi, he still would've gone through with it.

I completely agree with this. I think the main problem was that nakaba may have been trying to write from the perspective of an impulsive and maybe troubled teenager, whilst not being one himself. this probably made him exaggerate a lot of reactions and situations.
I need to do a quick rant about this 'kay,
I DESPISE KING
I was gonna say hate, but hates a strong word. I start to like him as a character at the end of the series but for like the first 3-4 seasons he got under my skin so much. why was he literally beefing with half the sins?? Gowther, Ban and Meliodas. like ho how are you half everyone's height but beefing with half of them. for Ban i can understand, all the evidence did point to him killing Elaine but he literally could've confronted him about it instead of STABBING HIM AND BEING A PAIN IN THE ASS ABOUT IT.
I will never forgive how he treated gowther. as a group they all knew gowther struggled with understanding right from wrong and emotions, but he just didn't seem to care in my opinion. Instead of explaining to gowther why stealing someone's memorise is wrong, he lashes out at him. gowther learned nothing from that. gowther kept asking why what he did was wrong since Diane said memorise are more than information, and he wanted to rest that. you know, that's the kind of person he is. and instead of explaining to him, king just kept saying soemthing along the lines of "it just is, you can't so that." LITERALLY SIT HIM DOWN AND TALK HIM THROUGH IT.
and Meliodas. Mind you this man literally saved him and gave him a bloody meaning after the forest HE ABANDONED got destroyed. but the second he suspects he's a demon he switches up, gives him the cold shoudler and starts attacking him with no context or warning. bit or ice since he spent the previous season explaining to helbram in tears that even though the humans he encountered were bad, not all of them were.
