The Thistle has been Scotlands national emblem for many centuries and is one of the most well known symbols of Scotland. Often seen around the Highlands , the prickly thistle has been used as a royal symbol of Scotland since the rule of James III in 1470 and is the oldest recorded 'National Flower'. Dating back to the 13th century when the Vikings tried to creep up on #flowerofscotland Scottish #Clansmen, only to walk barefoot over thistles. A #nisse (Danish) or #Tomte ( Swedish) is a #mythological creature from #Nordic #folklore today typically associated with the winter solstice and the Christmas season. The #nisse/tomte was sometimes seen as the farmer who cleared the forest to build the farm and who in #pre-Christian times would have been buried on the farm in a mound. He was sometimes referred to as the haugkall or haugebonde, from the #OldNorse haugr meaning #mound. According to tradition, the nisse these days lives in the houses and barns of the farmstead and secretly act as their guardian. If treated well, they protect the family and animals from evil and misfortune and may also aid with #dailychores in particular, #farm #work. However, they are known to be #shorttempered, a little #cranky especially when offended - they cannot abide lazy farmers and people who are NOT KIND to all kind.
