YES YES YES YES!!!! Even though we only got a little bit of Maia, I feel like it just made the books better.

Also the feeding the cats sardines part.

Just finished The Tomb of Dragons (which I have been saving) and my immediate reaction was "yeah, the fandom will have flipped over this" (and I go look, and indeed the fandom flipped).

I liked it! Thara remains an absolutely unreliable narrator in regards to both his importance and his understanding of his impact on other people, but I forgive him, because his self esteem is completely shot for various reasons.

One of the things I do love about this series is how often people sit down for a cup of tea. It's not quite at Sharon Green levels (The Blending challenge of getting through an entire chapter without someone having a cup of tea) but it is consistently used as a motif for taking a break to discuss what's just occurred.

And look contrariwise I do appreciate stories with deep queer friendships and that is what Thara and Iäna have, and I personally found it charming and relatable.

But dragons! The ghosts of dragons seeking a Witness for the Dead! The skull! I found the interplay of the main plots really interesting (the cemetery not interring its dead, the tomb of dragons plot, the expected murder, and the Coralis Clunethar rebellion).

And as is traditional for these series, we built a lot more complex vocabulary (revethvezvaishor'avar? THAT is a compound word for the ages), some of which we had to work out from context (yes, we all worked out what a reveth-atha is pretty quickly from the description, very good).

And oh, the confirmation that gifting a sunblade means a vow of obedience, because a family sunblade is the weapon you execute highborn traitors with? Damn! Damn.

I really enjoyed the little peeks we got into the Alcethmeret inhabitants a year on, and from an outsider's viewpoint. Wish we got more Maia of course but I loved the bits we did get.
