partially inspired by a post i saw on tiktok but anyways

realizing the backrooms was an extension of the trauma caused by quarantine was honestly shocking, but it makes sense.

What most people define as a liminal space is a depicted location that looks familiar and nostalgic, but ultimately lacks whatever made it special. The arcades and the pools and the desks are all there, but the people are missing. All that's left are imprints, messes, and stains left behind. Little proofs that people were once there, but they aren't anymore. Hell, some of these liminal spaces don't even have signs of human life aside from the actual buildings depicted. And the lights are often shut off, meaning whoever kept the place in order left you behind in there. You're alone, with the remnants of normal life scattered around you, but it was never the place that made it lively. It was the people.

Similarly, during quarantine, you could still go outside after a while, but you needed a mask and to keep physical distance. You could contact people online, sure, but those people would never feel as tangible and real as they did when you could hug one another without fear.

and then folks started adding monsters to the backrooms. that's fine, btw, I love a good monster too, and if you still like what the backrooms has turned into over time, don't let me rain on your parade. but there's not much to add regarding social isolation's effect on us that can be derived from what the backrooms became later on. I would've loved it if the backrooms continued to focus on the effects of forced isolation, but i can't be disappointed really. it was a horror phenomenon put in everyone's hands, so nobody could really control what direction it went in.

probably a slightly cold take, but "sudden and loud = scary" is the "shouting = funny" of horror media. like bestie you can't scream "oogabooga" at someone and expect them to crumble in terror and shake in their boots and weep for their mommies. same thing applies to gore and blood, actually. i say "slightly cold take" instead of "cold take" because apparently a lot of horror game devs do not know this.

unpopular opinion probably but ebb and flow feels overused for off the hook. like I get that it means a lot to marina and it was one of her first songs, but they have other songs and they act like they don't. the off the hook tricolor shout is good but i wish they used another song like short order or sharkbytes. at least put a spin on it like the squid sisters did with their shout. i love ebb and flow (especially octo expansion version) but i swear to god SRL give the other oth songs some love orz
