Hack-Job Screen Print
52 posts
I used to print in my garage. I recently made the lateral move to the basement. I used to shoot a lot more photos than I do now. The title of this tumblr is just fair warning. Set your expectation appropriately.

Simple two-color print for聽WC Beck & The Portland Country Underground @ The Alberta Street Pub. Kept this one simple and set it up to be very forgiving in the registration department.

Thanks to Lewi Longmire, my printing hiatus is over. This went over mostly well. Registration's not perfect on all of them (would've been had I prepped my files better), but it's not terrible and most of the run is fit for public consumption.
I think Lewi's just going to give these out to people who want one and buy his new 7" record tonight. Should be a great show with James Low + Michael Hurley opening up!
I should mention that the type lock-up for Lewi's band name on this print is from Tom Humphrey, pulled from his cover design for the 7" that Lewi's releasing tonight.
These are 12" x 18" some on white, some on chipboard.
I also did some digital prints (which pair well with these, but are quite a bit different) that Lewi hung up around town advertise the show as well as some web images for Facebook and such.
...Rebel Cricket Screen Printing also did some T-shirts with a variation of this artwork I provided last week. Excited to see what that looks like in real life (the attached T-shirt image is just a comp).

Hollow Earth?聽Quick and simple two-color, forgiving registration with much of the second color just printing right on top of the first. Feels unfinished which seems to be a theme for me lately. I need to get better at selecting colors, or at least get a little more adventurous with that. I think it looks a little cooler here in photos on-screen than it does in person. Could work as a concert poster if I knew someone who played music that made sense with the image. Maybe a metal band, or a drone/noise/psych-out band?

Here's something random. Just messing around with multiple colors within a single screen, by not mixing the inks all the way and adding colors during printing (via spoon or squeeze bottle)聽just before filling the screen. It was fun to play around with this and I definitely would like to try it some more so I can add the process into some future prints.聽
More metallics on this one because I just can't stop using metallic inks. I love the way they move as you walk by.
Edition of 22 on 12"x18" bright white paper.

If this was an art print, I'd call it "Unfinished Lewi." 聽A good lesson in doing what you think will work best, not what you think *might* work and go quicker. A 3rd color is really necessary to at least make the information pop better on this design, and probably would've helped the image itself a bit too. I had a feeling that was going to be the case before I prepped this one to print, but I rushed it into a two color anyway. Sorry Lewi!
Good news is the printing process itself pretty much went off without a hitch and I was able to execute a couple of thing that I learned from聽the last round about printing in that cold cold garage that helped out a lot, mostly having to do with a well-placed space heater throughout the entire process.
I printed about 45 of these. I handed off most of those to Lewi as well as about 30 digital prints/copies (where I lightened the text, making it read A LOT better) for hanging up around town. I suspect he'll have leftovers and hopefully he just sets them out at the show for easy grabbing by anyone who wants one. They're on the smaller side again, about 10"x12".
See you at the show!

Finally got around to trying to print on some old LPs. Just a single color, test run to see what the issues are to overcome. Biggest problem was the labels just don't want to come off. I never realized that they're actually pressed onto the soft vinyl when its being flattened from a biscuit shape to a disc so they're essentially part of the disc, not just a sticker. The chemicals and scraping that were required to get one off took forever and left the vinyl underneath pretty beat up and very dull compared with the shiny, audio portion. Solve was too print a black layer over the top of the labels first.
I was really surprised that nearly half the labels bled through once it dried, even after several passes of black ink. Main culprits were red and purple, especially with Disney labels.
Printing in the winter in a detached garage without insulation also added a layer of challenge. Well-aimed space heaters are a must from now until Spring.

Another screen print from my garage.
This time for Portland bluegrass group, Jackstraw, who are playing at one of my favorite Portland venues, the White Eagle on the 16th.
Small print (13" x 9") and a small run of 37. Signed "Hack-Job" and numbered.聽About 25 of these will be at the show to give away to whoever wants one. The rest will be hung up around town to advertise the show along with a bunch of color copies.
Pretty happy with these, if for no other reason that I did it quickly without over thinking things, which I'm normally prone to do. A simple design prepped on a Thursday night, and both colors printed on the next night. No major fiascos while printing, and all prints were usable, a first for me.
I think next up will be some non concert poster prints. Printing for the sake of printing.

Dolorean @ The Laurelthirst Public House ::聽3-Color, 12"x18" print
First time with 3 colors. Tried out 8 different papers instead of just the plain old chipboard I've mostly been using, and some Gold ink. I would love another shot at nailing this one, both in design and production, but it's not terrible and all things considered, I'm happy enough with the turnout.
UPDATE (10/16): All 35 of these were given out at the show on 10/3. Then 14 "seconds" (bad registration) were given out at the show on 10/10. A second edition of 52, all on thick chipboard are being given out at the shows on 10/17 and 10/24.聽

write in Neil deGrasse Tyson 12"x18", hand-pulled screen print
Oh. Hey.聽
So, I printed 30 of these in my garage and聽have about 20 to give away. If you're interested, drop me a line and I'll mail you one. For free, of course. Just shoot me an email (address is my tumblr username, @gmail.com). Keep in mind, they were pulled by hand, in my garage, and my screen printing experience is still pretty limited, so keep you expectations in check, especially when it comes to registration
I also put them up as PDFs at neil2012.net聽for anybody who wants to just print one out at home.聽Enjoy.

Another screen print...
...this one was printed for Lewi. Besides coating the screens with emulsion, I did this whole thing solo. Sacrificed a couple to bad registration and a couple more to too much of the dark/purple color getting through the screen, but after all that, 13 still came out in usable condition.
