Sparring with the 4-foot staff from Filipino Kuntao
My partner initiates with a short strike. I move out of range, then close the gap with a “slash” and score with a thrust. I pause the action for a moment to make sure my partner is ok, then we have a brief exchange of strikes and parries.

I did really enjoy those posts that you have made based on the martial arts a character would study I could tell that a lot of thought was put in it I did notice though that on a catwoman one you said that you might make more yet that was never done 😞 so I think that it would be very interesting if you were to do more
Oh, man. I should really check my inbox more. Ok, I’ll post another one of these soon. @lovelusthatething

I teach honourable fencing and chivalrous combat.
Yet somehow, I raised a dagger fighting rogue, that can beat swordsmen with her dagger.

Filipino martial arts is making its way into MMA. In a recent Instagram video, Strawweight favorite Rose Namajunas can be seen practicing Higot Hubud Lubud — a reflex development and sensitivity drill from Kali/Escrima. She claims that the drill adds heightened awareness and hand speed to her fight training, and describes it as a good warmup for MMA.
This isn’t the first time FMA has touched the world of sports. In 1977, Dan Inosanto famously taught Hubud — along with drills from Wing Chun and JKD — to the defensive linemen on the Dallas Cowboys. The team would go on to win the 1978 Super Bowl, with several players crediting Inosanto for their success.

Hey Budoblr —
What do you love most about the martial art you practice? What do you enjoy most about training in that style?

A Jeet Kune Do colleague of mine recently asked what it means to be on the Jeet Kune Do path. Here’s what came to mind for me:
“The easy (albeit boring) answer is doggedly and diligently researching your own experience, both within martial arts and without; being objective and free in your training (and in life) — not beholden to styles, creeds, or aesthetics; and being honest with yourself, always.
The not-so-easy answer is pursuing a depth in your training where the physical expression of combat becomes a mirror for the self — a tool to better understand your own personality, fears, values, ambitions, etc. For example, reflecting on your emotional response during a high-stress scenario like sparring could reveal a lot about your psychology: Are you afraid? Angry? Is it your instinct to back up and be defensive? Are you thinking about what you can do to your opponent, or what your opponent can do to you?
Reflecting on and understanding these things is the essence of what Bruce Lee means about self-expression through martial arts, I think.
You get to understand your own emotional state, your mental and physical limitations — and ultimately work to move beyond them (or maybe even embrace and capitalize on them).”
