A few months back I had the opportunity to document the first beer release from Cory King of Side Project Brewing in St. Louis. Michael caught up with Cory and put together a great Good Beer Hunting piece about how Side Project came to be.

One of my Good Beer Hunting shots from Woodfour ended up in the January issue of Beer Advocate magazine. Pretty sweet to see, and congrats to Seth and his crew for being among the class of 2013!

In 2013 I made more photos I'm proud of than any year past, but this one stands out because of the memories it brings out. I was lucky enough to be in California when one of my best friends achieved his three-year dream of opening a brewery, and I photographed him as he poured the first beer through the taps at Woodfour Brewing Company. That week also led me to my new job, and I'll soon be documenting the culmination of more than three years of dreaming, planning and executing when Eric and Tom pull the first beers through the taps at Penrose Brewing Company. And then I'll pour a hell of a lot of beer for them through those same taps.
2013 was good to me, but I can't wait for what's in store for 2014 and beyond.

It happened again, and it's officially way more fun getting your photos onto newspaper covers when you no longer shoot for newspapers.

Penrose in the news again. And hey, my first cover for the Kane County Chronicle! One of the few papers I never shot for around here.

Spent the weekend at Camp Wandawega for the second annual #goodbeerbuckshot and now firmly believe everyone should visit that gem at least once in their life.

Team Penrose went on a road trip to Michigan over the weekend to visit our friend Ryan from Virtue Cider and check out the farm, then he jumped in with us and the four of us went way north to visit a hop farm and orchard. We took the scenic route back. Check out what you missed on the brewery's Instagram or mine.

Last month I spent some time in Sebastopol, California, documenting for Good Beer Hunting and helping out one of my best friends in the final days before his new brewpub, Woodfour Brewing Company, opened for business. What was supposed to be a four-day trip was extended to 10 days, and because of spending that time immersed in the project (and being Seth's whipping boy when I didn't have a camera around) I think I got some of the strongest photos I've ever taken. Working 14-17 hour days and loving it during what was supposed to be a vacation also made me realize that a career in the craft beer industry was something I would love to do and encouraged me to apply for the job at Penrose. I sent my cover letter and resume for the job from a table in Seth's restaurant.
To see more photos from Woodfour and learn about how they're looking to push craft beer forward, read Michael Kiser's fantastic piece on it on Good Beer Hunting.
