Two years of a coronavirus crisis that robbed us of seeing our musical heroes, delayed us the chance to see Kim Gordon tour and perform her first solo album prophetically titled “No Home Record”.

This album truly connects Gordon’s “No Wave” beginnings of Sonic Youth with modern youthful timely approach to bring the genre to a new generation which seemingly has found a home.  With a majority young audience in attendance mixed with CBGB’s fans from the 80’s hoping to recapture the original energy that Kim inspired during that time when there were no rules.

Gordon took the stage at The Orange Peel and her fans were ecstatic as well as enamored by her simultaneous mixture of grit, elegance and punk roots guitar shredding as well as her undeniable pulchritude for a woman of her stature. A mixture off traits that no other woman in the business for over forty years could remotely come close to pulling off. Forced to perform under duress due to her drummer testing positive to Covid right before the show, her young talented all-female tour band including guitarist Sarah Register, and bassist Camilla Charlesworth created the pocket where the absent drums should have been with Kim playing lead guitar and acting the Troubadour despite a tough shortened set.  ... I wrote a huge review of what it was like to see @primusville open up the "A Farewell to King's Tribute" tour only to have the page freeze when I was loading the photos... So here we go again.... A few weeks ago I photographed Primus doing a tribute to @rush playing the entire "A Farewell to Kings" album. Anyone who knows Rush, knows that this is a huge undertaking. I've never been much of a Primus fan but I have the utmost respect for their musicianship, and if any band were to attempt to perform Rush, this is the band who you would think could possibly pull it off. If you know the album, the song that was going to be the most critical to pull off was going to be "Closer to the Heart". Surprisingly, although sung in a lower octave @lesclaypool pulled it off completely. #LarryLalonde did a fantastic job playing the Alex Lifeson parts that are so underrated in Rush, and although it would have been nice to see #TimAlexander behind his wall of drums, he did a great job emulating Neil Peart , the GOD of Mathrock drumming. Claypool went on to tell some intimate stories about opening for Rush way back in the day, and how they would watch other bands go out to open for Rush and get obliterated in front of the crowd and that when Primus opened for them, they held their own, and eventually became close friends with the band over the years, thus leading to the tribute that they were playing. Watching this show was so close to Rush, that it caused me to go into a Rush deep dive for two days following the performance. Most impressive, was Claypool pulling off the keyboard parts and bass simultaneously a'la Geddy Lee and pulling out a fantastic Rickenbacker double bass, the likes of which I've never seen, an absolutely gorgeous instrument. Rivers overflowed in the lowlands and houses were literally uprooted and were floating down the roads here in the mountains. Canton, North Carolina was hit the hardest. On Saturday, Amanda Anne Platt & The Honey Cutters, and Balsam Range, a band with countless Bluegrass Grammy's and awards, with the help of countless volunteers including Adamas Entertainment, Smoky Mountain News, Wicked Weed Brewing, Boojum Brewing Company, Innovation Brewing, as well as others, organized a benefit concert for the flood victims. Canton is a proud hard working blue collar paper town 15 minutes west of Asheville.
